Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. The quest for ore in an open pit is fundamentally an earth moving proposition. This thesis is vividly underscored by the rapidly increasing volume of waste to be removed in newer mines, where in some instances waste to ore ratios have reached as high as 20 to 1. Continuing depletion of high grade reserves, greater demand for raw materials, coupled with ever climbing labor costs, have made the problem still more pronounced and the need for more effective means of earth moving in an open pit even more acute. A conservative approach to the problem has been to upgrade the sizes of conventional earth moving equipment such as shovels and trucks. In many open pits, particularly in the C.S., this has been responsible for the generally down- ward trend of earth moving costs. None the less, the investment costs of these machines are high, and their gigantic engines are seldom fully utilized. Moreover, a large number of operators are required and maintenance remains relatively high. Unfortunately most people have felt that no other viable alternative was in sight within today's technological capabilities.

IN THE BEGINNING Contrary to popular myth, the personal computer can trace its roots back to a time before 1981 and the IBM PC. The seeds of the personal computer revolution were probably founded in 1975 with the release of the Altair (kit) personal computer, first advertised in Popular Electronics. June of 1975 marked the beginning of the Homebrew Computer Club in San Francisco. The founding membership list of the Homebrew Club now reads like a "Who's Who" of those involved in the early development of the personal computer industry. The Apple I computer was created by Steve Wozniak in early 1976 from the newly manufactured MOS Technology 6502 chip. It had 4,000 bytes (4K) of Random Access Memory (RAM] memory, a revolutionary amount of memory in 1976. Another early pioneer, the Commodore Pet computer, was another 6502 machine, but with 8K of memory. Tandy Corporation made its name in the hobby industry with leather kits. They embarked on a new path with the production of the TRS-80 line of personal computers. Most were based on the Z-80 chip, but again, were memory limited. A number of other Z-80 based systems followed later, including the Osbourne and the KayPro Computers. These systems were based on the Digital Research CP/M operating system and had a maximum of 64,000 bytes of memory (64K). The Apple I1 Computer appeared in 1977. Newer models of the original Commodore Pet and an Atari computer followed. These machines were also limited to 64K of memory addressing, and the early models typically shipped with only 16K, 32K, or 48K of memory. The Z-80 and the 6502 were the first truly commercialized CPU chips touting boxes with key- boards, monitors (sometimes a TV), and the ability to expand (peripheral slots for serial communications, centronics parallel communications, etc.1. They all shared one technology, audio tape as a storage media. The use of a portable tape recorder provided inexpensive, if not always reliable, magnetic storage. The tape recorders were typically finicky and required patience to use. Adjustments to the volume control were often needed to find "just-the-right" setting for loading or saving information. This kept the personal computer from being accepted in many markets, and gave it a reputation as a hobbyist or experimenters' toy. In early 1979, Steve Wozniak finished the design of a floppy disk drive and controller. This was a revolutionary design which reduced the "then" standard number of controller chips from fifty-plus, to just eight. With the advent of an affordable floppy disk drive mechanism, the personal computer was about to gain respectability. From a business standpoint, it was now possible to save and reliably retrieve business information. It also provided a superior means of distribution for commercially created software. Commercial software became a commodity rather than an oddity.

Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

External detonation generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating ex-plosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall. The effects of this phenomenon on several explosive compositions and types are demonstrated and discussed. Explosives tested include aluminum sensitized and explosive sensitized slurries, ANFO, liquid explosives and dynamites. Various techniques are described that can be used to reduce or eliminate the plasma effect.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. This paper offers a comprehensive solution to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. It discusses details of enclosure design and presents a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volumes. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds, enclosure openings, material flow rates, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these quantities are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form which permits quick, reliable solutions by relative "non- experts".

This study aims to investigate the effects of the operational variables on the concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. The results indicate that concentrate collecting time and pulp density were the parameters with the greatest effects on the concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, the concentrate collecting time, collector dosage and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. The separation efficiency was found to be mainly influenced by the concentrate collecting time. This study can be helpful in identifying the parameters with the most effects on flotation performance and, consequently, the overall process efficiency, including recovery and separation efficiency. Such an outcome can be used as a decision-based tool to apply the necessary changes in a real-life industrial operation in a more effective way to improve the quality and quantity of the flotation concentration.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

It's a pleasure to be included with this group. I am not here to sell my services, but rather to share with you some ideas and considerations on using environmental consultants. Environmental consultants have developed some problems as well as created new costs for companies that are as legitimate as engineering costs. Each day the mining industry is becoming more affected by the proliferation of environmental regulations and their interpretations by federal and state agencies. How does a modern mining company cope with all the demands for environmental consideration by regulatory agencies and special interest environmental groups-- yet produce a product and make a profit? One way is to make efficient use of environmental consultants. But, as everyone here knows, this approach has been fraught with seemingly inherent frustrations, difficulties, and much justified criticism.

This paper describes how a knowledge of inherent rock characteristics can aid the mining engineer in his design of a mining method for a massive domelike structure. The paper shows how the pertinent rock characteristics were measured and analyzed and how the data obtained was used for design purposes. This analysis was conducted in 1964 in a producing salt dome, since that time, mine management has tried certain of the recommendations for mine design changes. The results of such changes are presented.

Mine explosions are one of the most concerning risks related to underground coal mining, as a single gas explosion can cause injuries and fatalities among miners. Underground infrastructure seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are employed to isolate an area from active workings to mitigate coal mining-related accident risks. They are designed to withstand blast pressures from a possible accidental detonation of the contained gas or a coal dust explosion. Crosscut seals and BIP RAs, typically consisting of steel-reinforced concrete, are prone to strong convergence and have a significant leakage potential due to high convergence damage near mined-out areas. The roof-to-floor convergence can change the structural integrity of these structures, and altered structural integrity can lead to less explosion resistance capability. Hence, a thorough analysis is needed to further understand their explosion response under various strata conditions.

The classification of rock and coal will assist in automated coal rib rating and shearer horizon control, and is studied with machine learning techniques in this work. A database of rock and coal images is created by filtering photographs taken by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The classifier was trained with patches extracted from the coal and rock images, and an accuracy score of 0.9 was obtained. The trained classifier was then applied to classify rock from a new coal rib image with three rock layers of different thicknesses, and good agreement was achieved. The results demonstrate that it is promising to use machine learning techniques and rib images for rock and coal classification.

Ore crushing facilities at the Phelps Dodge Morenci Reduction Works became operational in January of 1942. This plant, with a capacity of 25,000 tons per day, was part of a project started some five years earlier with development of the Morenci Open Pit Copper Mine. In the following year, World War II's heavy copper demands prompted an 80% expansion in concentrating capacity to 45,000 tons per day resulting in a doubling of the secondary crushing plant. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, grinding capacity was again expanded to the present 60,000 TPD. This time the then 20 year old crushing plant was obliged to meet a 20% increase in production demand with no additional equipment. The ore, principally a medium hard monzonite porphyry, is dumped from 40 yard rail cars into an ore pocket over the primary crusher at a rate of approximately one car per minute. The primary crushing flowsheet, Figure 1, has remained essentially unchanged over the years. Equipment consists of a 40 by 16 foot grizzly set on a 40° incline and having 6" openings, a 60" gyratory crusher nomin¬ally set at 62" + 1" on the closed side and two 72" by 38' panfeeders which load crushed ore and grizzly undersize at a rate of 4,000 tons per hour onto a twin 54" belt conveyor system for delivery to the coarse ore bin. Ore is distributed across the bin by two single side discharge tripper cars. Bin capacity is extremely limited at 23,000 tons of which only 12,000 is available or "live".

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.
