The problems of the domestic merchant fluorspar producers are more or less common with those of many other producers of metallic and non-metallic minerals. For more than ten years the American fluorspar producers have seen an ever lowering price in the market-place for the fluorspar product, while their labor and material costs-continue to mount steadily. This cost-price squeeze has forced out of business all but a few of the merchant producers, and only two captive producers continue to operate, and one of them has announced early curtailment. The prices of domestic fluorspar, of all grades, have declined because of the competition from cheaper foreign imports, principally from Mexico, Spain and Italy. Tariff protection on fluorspar, particularly on the highest or acid grade, has never been sufficient to cover the production cost differential between foreign and domestic fluorspars. Low ocean and barge freight rates have also contributed to the barring of the product of domestic mines from, the major consuming centers along the Gulf and East Coast. Because of the freight disadvantage, all but one or two fluorspar producers in the western states have had to suspend business. More than 80% of the domestic fluorspar is being produced in Illinois and Kentucky fluorspar districts which adjoin on both sides of the Ohio River.

When Ralph Banks called and asked if I would agree to present a paper on environmental health in the coal industry, I was reluctant because I have not been actively involved in coal mine dust control on a day-to-day basis for a number of years. Ralph reminded me that I am one of the few industry people with an industrial health background who remembers the pre-1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety era. This marks the second time within the past year that I have had a similar request based on the same basic reasons. While I was pleased to have been remembered, I'm beginning to feel like the football player who has played one too many games. In responding to Ralph's request to present an overview of the past, present and future of environmental health in the coal industry, I have attempted to take the broad approach of someone who, having been intimately involved in an area of endeavor for a number of years and then leaves, has an opportunity to revisit that area at a later date to see what has changed and what remains the same, what have been the successes and the failures. Since none of us can foresee the future, trying to project too far ahead is fraught with frivolity, except that unless one is foolish enough to accept a future invitation to review those predictions compared to actual events, no one will recall how accurate or inaccurate those projections might have been. I can assure you that I will not ask to accept that challenge, so you can rest comfortably that five years from today you will not be asked to sit through a similar presentation by me - and that's a promise.

Polymorphic transformations taking place in grinding processes, of massicot to litharge in PbO system, and of y to a in Fe203 system, were re-investigated. Grinding was carried-on in a steeel rotation mill charged with WC balls, under inert atmosphere. The kinetics of transformation in PbO was established by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. The resulting data fit a modified logistic growth function up to about 75% of transformed volume fraction, when a mixture at steady-state equilibrium is formed. The reasoning for the use of a modified logistic function is discussed. A sigmoidal growth function can be used if resulting data fit also an empirical power relationship between transformed volume fraction and time. However, it lacks the significance expressed by a modified logistic function. Assuming, the loss in magnetism is directly related to the amount of transformation in Fe 203, a quantitative analysis was performed using a magnetic balance method. The results fit only the modified logistic growth function, and transformation proceeds almost to completion. A wide literature survey of the subject is given. Available data from literature is compared with the results of the present study, and is shown also to fit a modified logistic grown function, with surprisingly similar slpes in a linear plot, independently of the material. The instrumentation effect on kinetics parameters, and the establishment of equilibrium mixture values, are discussed.

Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during a long wall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this study, the effects of the three factors, the stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development, the stress ratio of the maximum to the minimum horizontal stresses, and the sequence of entry development, on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method, when the horizontal stress is fixed. The results have confirmed that the stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the angle is about 60°_75°. The stress ratio has little effect on the roof stresses. In addition, the sequence of entry development has also little effect on the roof stress for the specific case analyzed.

"A heterogeneity study was conducted at Erdenet Copper Mine in Erdenet, Mongolia, to determine the fundamental sampling error associated with blasthole sampling. Using a custom designed sector sampler, six large blasthole samples were collected to perform the test that was developed by Pierre Gy, to estimate the constitutional heterogeneity factor for several types of ore. The study investigated the entire sampling protocol, from mine site to analytical laboratory, and quantified the contributions to fundamental sampling error (FSE) of the various stages of sampling and sample preparation. The total relative standard deviation (RSD) of sampling error was determined to be ±32% and ±49.4% for copper and molybdenum respectively. A classical statistics analysis conducted on the data confirmed the level of RSD. About 95% of the sampling error was produced from only one step in the sampling protocol: when the 1 kg sample was reduced to 50 g sample for chemical analysis. Therefore, it is recommended that the 1 kg sample be reduced to 50g using a slightly different protocol to minimize the FSE. The 1 kg sample should be first crushed to 0.2cm size. A 250g split should then be taken and fine ground. A 50g split should then be taken from the 250g fine ground split. These two simple steps will reduce the FSE to ±7.9% and ±17% for copper and molybdenum respectively. The modified sampling protocol effectively reduces the probability of misclassification of low grade ore to zero. INTRODUCTION The Erdenet copper-molybdenum open pit mine is located in Erdenet, in Orkhon province, Mongolia. The Erdenetiin-Ovoo copper-molybdenum deposit is between 1.5 and 3 km wide, and about 25 km in length (Erdenet Mining Corporation, 2016). Chalcopyrite, bornite covellite and chalcocite are among the major minerals found in the deposit. The mine processes approximately 26 million tons of ore annually. A study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental error associated with the blasthole cuttings and sampling protocol at the mine. The open pit mine uses 215mm diameter Russian drills to drill 17.5m holes for 15m benches. The total weight of blasthole cuttings for a 215mm diameter hole and 15m bench height is between 1.5 and 2 tonnes. This amount of sample is difficult and time consuming to collect and analyze. Therefore, a sector sampler was designed for the Russian drills to collect large samples that were representative of the blasthole cuttings (Ganguli et al., 2016). In order to eliminate the delimitation and the extraction errors, researchers consider sector samplers to be ideal for sampling blastholes (Pitard, 2008; Chieregati and Pitard, 2009). This method was intentionally more rigorous than the blasthole sampling protocol at the mine to ensure that the blasthole cuttings were properly sampled. This study was part of a broader study that also looked at the relationship between particle size and grade. The samples collected by the custom designed sector sampler were very large (195 kg on average), and therefore, sufficient for both studies. The relationship between particle size and grade has been reported in Ganguli et al. (2016)."

The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

This paper makes five major points which may be contributions to the art of limestone sinkhole engineering. First, solution cavity development in limestones is dependent in great measure on pyrite contained within the limestone. Second, rock failure is rarely involved in sinkhole problems, while soil failures are almost always the mode of occurrence. Third, draw down, depression of the water table, is a primary causative factor in sinkhole development. Fourth, lateral movement of vadose water along the soil-rock interface, sub-soil erosion, is the mechanism by which soil is stoped, raveled, piped, or removed from the soil cavern. Fifth, the ultimate or triggering factor in localizing a sinkhole collapse is any superposed mechanism which disrupts the continuity of an impermeable clay soil overburden. The above theses are presented as extensions of our observation and of published literature, with the suggestion that additional study of these mechanisms is warranted.

Wastes in various forms have always been a part of mining, and management of mine waste has evolved from the early days of "push it over the side and down the creek" to today's highly engineered waste facilities. Changes have been brought about not only by technological advances in the ?3M?s? - mining, milling, and metallurgy - but also by environmental awareness and changing social values that have been manifested in an ever-growing maze of regulations. This is a dynamic era, and the debate goes on. So it is that planners have to anticipate permit and regulatory requirements in the site-selection process along with the traditional criteria. The McLaughlin gold project is an example of how one company, Homestake, has met this planning challenge. In August of 1980, Homestake Mining Company announced a major gold discovery in northern California known as the McLaughlin Project. The property is approximately 80 air miles northeast of San Francisco near the junction of Lake, Napa, and Yolo Counties. This is an area where mercury has been mined off and on for over 100 years; gold has never been mined in the area. The gold is microscopic and finely dispersed in a complex geologic setting. Reserves are estimated at approximately 20 million tons at a grade of approximately 0.16 ounces per ton.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. Estimated costs and revenues can be used in the evaluation of post- mining land use alternatives. However, post-mining land use decisions have to be made in an environment complicated by several additional factors. These factors, including cultural, natural, and managerial issues, are not as easily quantified as costs and revenues but may be more important determinants. There- fore, some approach is needed to attach relative weight to the various factors. The concept of fuzzy sets assembled into a structured hierarchy facilitates analysis of the relative value of individual factors and their impact upon each alternative under consideration. In this paper, a method is presented which employs fuzzy set analysis to evaluate postmining land use plans on the basis of these nonquantitative factors.

Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for predicting, the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface movement data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data collected could not provide more information other than surface movement. In this paper, the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements and calculated surface deformation are discussed. Techniques for improving the accuracy of the calculated deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, and curvature) are developed. The proposed techniques include: (1) proper selection of monument spacing for subsidence monitoring; (2) a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and (3) a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data.

As a member of the vast fraternity of those that supply and service the mining industry, I can assure you that we are amused, amazed, and horrified at the poor drilling and blasting practices of a great number of operations. Yes, ?horrified?. After all, that is our product you are using and abusing. We all know that drilling and blasting is expensive. In some operations D & B costs may exceed excavating or hauling costs, or both. At any rate, it is the only portion of the whole operation that could be said to directly affect other costs. There is no argument that it affects excavating costs. If the overburden and/or product is drilled and hauled, it affects haulage costs. It can easily affect milling costs, if more or less fines is important. And poor fragmentation affects crushing costs. If scalping is done ahead of the primary crusher it can affect production. As has been pointed out, the D & B operation itself is costly, and therefore should lend itself to close scrutiny. Anyone that could immediately decrease haulage costs by 10% would be a hero with any mining company.

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

The model's input consists of raw coal size and washability analysis, operating cost data, and raw coal and clean costs. The model's output predicts yields, qualities, costs and profitability for an individual coal.

Electric locomotives powered by extensive electrical cabling systems were prevalent in the mining industry in the early days of the 20th Century [1]. Since the movement of tethered electrical mining locomotives was limited, the advent of diesel-powered mobile mining equipment provided more flexibility. This led the mining industry to be dominated by diesel-powered locomotives for most of the 20th Century and the entire 21st Century, to date. However, diesel power has certain drawbacks. Diesel-powered vehicles produce tailpipe emissions such as diesel particulate matter, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Mine workers exposed to these emissions were, and continue to be, subject to health issues such as respiratory problems, increased risk of lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. [2][3]. Extensive ventilation systems are required to dilute the diesel exhaust and dissipate the heat generated by these vehicles. Moreover, as mines are getting deeper due to depleting resources, ventilation costs in diesel-powered mines are becoming increasingly high. These factors, coupled with the trend towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in mine operations, has allowed zero-emission electric locomotive systems to gain traction. As lithium-ion battery technology is becoming more advanced, battery-powered electric vehicles can now perform duty cycles comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles. Although battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are comparable to diesel-powered vehicles in terms of mobility, they have certain limitations. For instance, the amount of onboard energy is limited by the battery energy density and specific energy. The MT42 diesel haul truck from Epiroc, for example, has a fuel tank capacity of 580L, which is equivalent to around 1450 kWh of net electrical energy [4]. The electrified version of the MT42, on the other hand, has an onboard battery with 375 kWh of usable energy weighing around 4.9 metric tonnes [5]. Moreover, storing and refueling of diesel-powered vehicles is simple and quick, whereas battery energy storage and charging systems require extensive infrastructure development. Charging time is mostly limited by battery chemistry and design. Due to these limitations, the benefits of battery-powered mining vehicles are more likely to be realized with proper planning and optimization of the BEV fleet. This includes optimizing mining layouts for BEV use, charging infrastructure design, and management of onboard energy storage systems.

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.
