Mathematical models of mineral processing unit operations have been developed and used for a variety of purposes. Models, defined as equations which mathematically approximate the behavior of process units, are being employed in simulators to evaluate proposed flowsheets, to investigate flowsheet modifications, to study the effect of variables on circuit behavior, to optimize the performance of circuits off-line, and to compare alternate control strategies (Mular and Herbst, 1978). Models developed for mineral processing operations may be placed in one of two general categories: phenomenological (based on mechanism) and. empirical (based on experimental data only). Dynamic models (including time as a variable) .are useful for control studies, while steady-state models (independent of time) are employed in flowsheet evaluations. Phenomenological models are potentially more flexible and accurate than empirical models. However, models constructed from theoretical knowledge are less easily developed compared to empirical expressions fitted statistically to experimental data. The latter apply only over the range of data acquired. Most often, models used in practice are the result of a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches.

In recent years, the crude oil reserves of the world have increased at the same rate as the consumption. A Consideration of the global figures suggests that adequate supplies of petroleum will be available during the next decades. On the other hand, it in a fast of economic and political significance that the reserves in the industrialized countries increase much more slowly than in the developing countries. In Western Europe the reserves have even decreased. At the present time, about 70 % of the petroleum reserves of the world are in the Middle East and in Africa in regions in which political arises are prevalent or impending. For the industrialized countries, the discrepancies between the consumption and reserves in various regions of the world are a strong urge to investigate whether oil can be recovered from other sources. The situation will probably not be changed to a large extent by the discovery of oil in the north of Alaska. The main starting materials for the production of synthetic crude oil are coal, oil shale and tar sand. In North America, where the consumption of petroleum increases more rapidly than the reserves, there are enormous deposits of each of the three materials. This fact is another incentive toward the utilization of these unconventional oil reserves, which provide a reliable basis for a supple of energy for a long time to come.

This paper discusses the fundamental strategies adopted in the simulation package FIRES developed for ventilation simulation under mine fires. These fundamental strategies include (1) fire characteristic curves specifying the development of a mine fire with time, (2) simulation of fume spread in a ventilation system, (3) determination of the aerodynamic effects of mine fires on flows; and (4) dynamic simulation of flow state under mine fires. The major functions of the simulation package are also addressed. The package has been used to simulate an experiment of mine fire. A comparison is made between the simulation results and the measured data.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. The concrete block industry can trace its beginnings to the early 18th century when most of the experimental work was being carried out in England. In America, the concrete masonry industry got started shortly after the Civil War and has had sometimes a spectacular, but always a steady growth since then. From a few hundred thousand concrete masonry units made in the late 19th century, the industry today produces approximately 3.3 billion concrete masonry units making it the largest industry in the United States for masonry wall materials. There were 3500 concrete masonry plants manufacturing these units after World War II. This nwnber decreased to 1500 by 1970 although the production of concrete masonry units increased by over 100% in the last 25 years. One of the reasons for this increase in production by less than half of the plants which once existed, is the tremendous strides made in automation of production machinery. The concrete masonry plant of today is probably one of the most automated small businesses in existence. Within a few years it will be possible to push a button and the entire manufacturing process will begin with no human hands touching the units until they are laid up in a wall at the manufacturing plant and are trans-ported to the job site. No other concrete product has reached this state of manufacturing sophistication and it is one of the reasons why the price of a concrete masonry unit is not much different than it was 2S years ago. Because of automation, it is safe to say that concrete masonry will remain a highly competitive building material for many years to come. The problems that beset the continued use of this material are not related to the cost of manufacturing and delivering the product. What are some of the problems as well as some of the opportunities and is the golden age of opportunity knocking rather than a wolf in disguise? The use of concrete masonry has grown each year because a larger unit was provided at less cost than other competitive materials. The introduction of continuous mining machines in the late 1940's prompted the mining industry to reassess shuttle car batch-type haulage. Between place changes, the continuous miner could cut and load coal on a nearly continuous basis, but after loading a shuttle car, the high-capacity machine had to wait until the second shuttle car came inby and spotted itself under the miner tail boom. Thus, the wait-for-shuttle-car delay periods became the new bottleneck for increased coal production from the mine section. Recent studies have shown that nearly 25 pct of the continuous miner cycle time is consumed by delays in the haulage system, usually waiting for shuttle cars. Computer simulations of a face operation indicate that up to a 45 pct increase in coal production may be realized through the use of a continuous haulage system, assuming of course that the outby haulage system can handle this increased capacity. Coincidently, there are recent claims by some mines using continuous face haulage of a production increase of 45 pct compared with shuttle car haulage. These documented production records, computer simulations, and common sense indicate the potential of continuous face haulage in underground coal. The late 1960's and early 1970's saw several mining machinery manufacturers market mobile bridge carrier and piggyback bridge conveyor continuous haulage systems for use in underground coal mines. These systems have shown limited potential in some mines and outstanding success in others. It appears that no one system can be universally applicable to all underground mining conditions; thus, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research over the last few years to investigate different types of continuous haulage systems for use in high and low coal seams that will advance the state of the art.

Mill liner design is an important factor in grinding. Testing and selection of the optimum liner profile for a given set of mill operating conditions can improve mill capacity, liner life, and liner wear rate At a time when mill avilability is at a premium, production costs are going up, and lead time for mill liner castings is a year or more, the mill liner that grinds best, lasts longest, and costs least is a necessity for economic mill operation. In testing four mill liner profiles for 13' x 12' overflow ball mills, Climax found that an improved design increased mill tonnage by 3 tons per hour while reducing finish grind by 1.7% + 100 mesh, reduced liner wear rate, and almost doubled liner life.

Filtration of copper concentrates in the mining industry is carried out in cycles, mainly cake formation, expression, and blowing. Each of these cycles depends on the solid (mineralogy, porosity, particle size distribution), water, and air (density, viscosity, permeability, and relative permeability) properties that define the performance in each cycle. The fundamental phenomenon in cake formation and expression is a one-phase flow (water) through a porous bed of solid particles (the cake), while in blowing it is a two-phase flow (water and air) through the cake. Sometimes, due to a change in the properties of the mineral, a filtration plant is unable to maintain the capacity at the specified humidity. One alternative to solve this problem is to heat the air during the blowing cycle, which in turn heats the water in the cake, this process significantly decreases the water viscosity and only marginally increases the air viscosity. In this work, this strategy was studied at a laboratory scale. The results show a significant decrease in the blowing time as the temperature of the air was increased.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. IN THE BEGINNING Contrary to popular myth, the personal computer can trace its roots back to a time before 1981 and the IBM PC. The seeds of the personal computer revolution were probably founded in 1975 with the release of the Altair (kit) personal computer, first advertised in Popular Electronics. June of 1975 marked the beginning of the Homebrew Computer Club in San Francisco. The founding membership list of the Homebrew Club now reads like a "Who's Who" of those involved in the early development of the personal computer industry. The Apple I computer was created by Steve Wozniak in early 1976 from the newly manufactured MOS Technology 6502 chip. It had 4,000 bytes (4K) of Random Access Memory (RAM] memory, a revolutionary amount of memory in 1976. Another early pioneer, the Commodore Pet computer, was another 6502 machine, but with 8K of memory. Tandy Corporation made its name in the hobby industry with leather kits. They embarked on a new path with the production of the TRS-80 line of personal computers. Most were based on the Z-80 chip, but again, were memory limited. A number of other Z-80 based systems followed later, including the Osbourne and the KayPro Computers. These systems were based on the Digital Research CP/M operating system and had a maximum of 64,000 bytes of memory (64K). The Apple I1 Computer appeared in 1977. Newer models of the original Commodore Pet and an Atari computer followed. These machines were also limited to 64K of memory addressing, and the early models typically shipped with only 16K, 32K, or 48K of memory. The Z-80 and the 6502 were the first truly commercialized CPU chips touting boxes with key- boards, monitors (sometimes a TV), and the ability to expand (peripheral slots for serial communications, centronics parallel communications, etc.1. They all shared one technology, audio tape as a storage media. The use of a portable tape recorder provided inexpensive, if not always reliable, magnetic storage. The tape recorders were typically finicky and required patience to use. Adjustments to the volume control were often needed to find "just-the-right" setting for loading or saving information. This kept the personal computer from being accepted in many markets, and gave it a reputation as a hobbyist or experimenters' toy. In early 1979, Steve Wozniak finished the design of a floppy disk drive and controller. This was a revolutionary design which reduced the "then" standard number of controller chips from fifty-plus, to just eight. With the advent of an affordable floppy disk drive mechanism, the personal computer was about to gain respectability. From a business standpoint, it was now possible to save and reliably retrieve business information. It also provided a superior means of distribution for commercially created software. Commercial software became a commodity rather than an oddity.

PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

One of the important factors affecting the determination of the minimum number of increments in a gross sample of coal is the variance component due to segregation. The segregation variance may be estimated by following the ASTM standard procedures. Since the estimate itself is a random variable, it is important to test if the value obtained is due to chance causes. This paper introduces a statistical test, based on the procedures published by ASTM, to test if the segregation variance is significantly greater than zero.

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

External detonation generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating ex-plosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall. The effects of this phenomenon on several explosive compositions and types are demonstrated and discussed. Explosives tested include aluminum sensitized and explosive sensitized slurries, ANFO, liquid explosives and dynamites. Various techniques are described that can be used to reduce or eliminate the plasma effect.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. This paper will introduce and discuss a range of techniques that utilise new developments in Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) for the investigation of incidents and accidents in mining environments. The future of mining safety may not be totally led by the demands of the mine operators, but sometimes by the academics, commercial software developers and legal pioneers who generate new ideas and products and set admissibility precedents which may change the way certain traditional investigative operations are performed. In any accident investigation the outcome from the investigating team is often a complex affair and the results of the investigation are often reported in large, convoluted documents. Computer-generated forensic reconstructions allow investigators to present accident scenarios in an accessible and easily understood, visual manner. Surveys in the US have also shown that people have increased recall of computer-generated images over many other forms of evidence. The AIMS Research Unit in the UK have been pioneering the use of Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology for both industrial and road traffic accident reconstruction. This paper and accompanying presentation will contain examples of forensic reconstructions developed by the authors that explain some of the methodologies used to ensure admissibility of this type of digital evidence. The paper will contain a number of case studies based on UK and International industrial accidents. The paper will focus on how AIMS Research is extending the capabilities of the accident reconstructions created to take advantage of the latest developments in VR technology. As digital technology makes its impact within professional and commercial fields, computer generated forensic reconstructions will form important admissible evidence in the courtrooms of the future. The technology will also make a great impact in the way we train our workforces, with highly visual three-dimensional (3D) interactive training tools becoming the norm. Acceptance by the public, courts and workforce is an important issue, and implementation strategies must be considered carefully.

Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to deter- mine the utility of heavy media separation, particularly a cone type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy media system was deter- mined. Two-stage pilot scale heavy media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses were determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

This paper presents the findings of a face ventilation investigation, conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, at a underground coal mine operating in the Illinois No. 5 coal seam. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining with brattice distances up to a maximum of 40 feet from the face (extended cut). The continuous miner on this section was remotely controlled and equipped with a machine mounted dust collector. Data collected during this investigation included methane concentrations, intake and return air quantities in the face area, and scrubber air quantities. In addition, a time study was conducted to correlate the methane peaks to activities in the face area. In conjunction with the face study on Section A, separate methane liberation studies were conducted on three additional sections: B, C, and D. This was done in order to compare intake methane concentrations and methane liberations from other sections in the mine to the test section. Calculations indicated that the minimum intake air quantity necessary at the inby end of the line brattice for the section investigated was 7,000 cfm. Due to the higher intake methane concentrations and average methane face liberations measured on three other sections, the minimum air quantities necessary at the inby end of the line brattice were determined to be 13,900 cfm, 11,100 cfm, and 15,000 cfm, respectively.
