The first time that a geologist is confronted with the necessity of evaluating a lateritic ore deposit, he may feel that nothing could be easier. Why should there be any problems in making an economic evaluation of a relatively flat-lying, surficial ore body? After several hundred thousand dollars worth of frustrating work often culminating in a series of non-reproducible data - the evaluator may be a sadder and wiser man. This paper will try to illustrate why the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist - and, more especially, how this problem can be solved. Volumes have been published on descriptive and genetic studies of lateritic ores. Obviously, there is time today only for the briefest description of such an ore body. The laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions and resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain tri-valent metals.- especially, aluminum and nickel. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of, partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Phosphate mines in Florida are continuing to encounter higher dolomitic content host rock with the phosphate pebbles(1) necessitating a change in grinding conditions and/or circuits, One of these changes is to install hydrocyclones and close circuit the mill as opposed to the traditional open circuit grinding plant. Close circuiting of the grinding mill with hydrocyclones allows one to take advantage of reduced process mill power requirements by circulating the coarse mill discharge back into the mill for multiple chances of particle breakage. Additionally, as in this case, the hydrocyclones de-slime the pebbles, allowing for more efficient use of grinding power by reducing the amount of dolomitic material recycled to the mill.

Since the advent of machine coated paper in the mid 1930's, the kaolin industry has had a remarkable growth, In 1935 the domestic production of kaolin was 500, 000 tons and in 1970 the estimated production was in excess of 3. 5 million tons. The process industries which use kaolin most extensively are paper, rubber, paint, ceramics, plastics, catalyst manufacturers, ink, and pharmaceutical. The paper industry is by far the largest consumer of kaolin using approximately 70 per cent of the total tonnage mined and beneficiated. Up until 1970 the major kaolin producers were able to expand rapidly enough to supply the demand but for the first time in thirty years the demand is expected to be in excess of mining and beneficiation capacity through at least 1975. The major reason for this is the expansion of coated paper production in Europe and Japan. Two areas supply the lion's share of kaolin for the world markets. These are the Cornwall area in extreme southwestern England and a limited area of Georgia and South Carolina in the southeastern U. S. The English kaolins are primary - (found in decomposed granite) whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are secondary - (found in lenticular, continuous beds in the Tuscaloosa formation of Cretaceous age. ) The English kaolins are mined by hydraulic methods whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are mined by dragline or shovel and benefidated by using a wet process for the majority of the production and/or a dry

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effec¬tive concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% minus 400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concen¬tration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity -1.0 tph dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75.0%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

Merchants perform a number of functions in the copper market. As a major distribution arm of the copper industry, they secure scrap and other copper bearing materials for processing into usable refined shapes. These are ultimately sold to fabricators. Merchants ' hedging and arbitrage activities help keep values in proper relationship from product to product or region to region. Through these switching and trading operations, they optimize the flow of copper from mine to consumer. And finally, merchants act as a repository for copper units during times of surplus and a stockpile from which to draw during tines of shortage.

The rapid acceleration and sweeping consequences of what we have all come to characterize as "the ecology movement" has marked a period of serious trial and challenge for the mining industry. It has blossomed into a major factor in our daily business and added a significant new dimension to the problems we must meet and overcome as businessmen. It has become an important new consideration at a time when we must continue to cope with our traditional problems such as rising costs, competition at home and abroad, and the always vital necessity to continually develop new and better technology to produce more minerals more efficiently and more economically. The body of law embracing environmental quality control grows each day, becomes more complex and offers more contradictions. And there is little relief in sight. The requirement to comply with sound environmental regulations -- or challenge unrealistic legislation -- has placed a major burden on the private sector. The economic significance of enacted and proposed environmental regulation is pressing management in the mining industry to some hard decisions -- basic day-to-day business decisions and decisions which acknowledge the undoubted long-term effects of the new laws.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. The research work reported in in this paper deals with the monitoring of roof behavior in a drift mine located in Eastern Kentucky operating in the Coalburg Seam. The thickness of the seam at the monitoring site ranges between 9 and 10 feet with the immediate roof changing from sandstone to shale then back to sandstone. Shale thickness varies between 0 and 2.5 feet. The characteristics of the immediate shaly roof were monitored with 38 dynamometers which were set up in three survey lines to cover the entire range of shale distribution. The dynamometers are capable of providing accurate load readings in the range of +/- 5 pounds. To closely observe the contribution of moisture toward roof deterioration the dynamometers were set up in intake and neutral airways. A television borescoping camera was used in conjunction with the dynamo- metric instrumentations at pre- determined observation holes to physically observe and record the separation process of the shale and sandstone stratum with respect to time. Monitoring took place between January 1985 through January 1986 in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with the seasonal changes. Analysis of the data show a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.

The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining's effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

The goal of Bethlehem's mining research program is to improve both the safety and productivity of our mines through the use of new equipment, new technology and new mining methods. Although we can all agree on the value of such goals, achieving them can be a costly, time-consuming and sometimes frustrating experience. However, the potential benefits of lower costs per ton and better safety in an increasingly more stringent and confusing regulatory environment make the expended effort worthwhile. At Bethlehem we feel that the mining companies are in the best position to determine the needs of the industry, and coal companies have the incentive as well as mine sites at their disposal for testing. A laboratory experimental research project was conducted to evaluate the use of chlorine for the oxidative destruction of residual ammonia which may remain in ground water after in-situ uranium solution mining operations. The work tested the idea of the injection of high strength calcium hypochlorite solution into the mining zone to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas as a final clean-up process for ammonia removal from the ground water system. The paper details ammonia removal efficiency as a function of chlorine dose, reactant and product material balances, and how the concept may be used as a final ground water restoration process.

In another situation, Dave Zegeer, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, whom all of you know very well, would have taken the opportunity to talk with you. In his absence, however, I would like to reference some of his recent comments which may help us to see the issue of mine safety in historical perspective. Dave pointed out that this year is the eightieth anniversary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco. The whole world heard about that disaster--it and the 452 people who died in it. In that same year, nearly five times as many people died in coal mines, but no one particularly noticed.

The impact of surface coal mining on the geologic materials and ground water in different geologic settings is being investigated by the Illinois State. Geological Survey at three abandoned surface mines in Illinois. At a site near Ottawa in La Salle County, the overburden prior to mining consisted largely of pyritic shale; sand was the major component of the overburden and spoil at a mine near Coal City, Grundy County. Clays, lacustrine silts, and some shale and limestone were the dominant premining overburden materials at a mine near Harrisburg, in Saline County. Ground-water elevations at Coal City and Harrisburg are approximately at premining levels, whereas at Ottawa they are near the base of the spoil. Ground-water quality has deteriorated at all three sites, especially at Ottawa and Harrisburg.

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1952 at the Humphrey Mine of Consolidation Coal Company for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for eight years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300-to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits.(1) Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Company, the parent company of Consolidation Coal Company, began a research program in the early 1970's to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary Its of this research have already been published.(2) To date nearly 4500 m of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: 1) The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3 percent in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95 percent.

In the November 1957 issue of "Chemical Process Engineering," a British publications, there appeared an article entitled "Correct Selection of Drying Equipment." The author wrote as follows "Whether batch drying or continuous drying' methods are applied, the basis of efficient drying is heat distribution, control of rate of heat input, and heat transference from heating medium to the particles of the material to be dried." The author continues: "Because the efficiency of direct dryers, such as hot air or hot gas dryers, increases with rising inlet temperature of the drying air or gas when exhaust temperature remains fixed, the highest practical drying temperature should be used. Exhaust air should leave the dryer at the lowest possible temperature, but as fully saturated with moisture as possible." It is certainly conceivable that the author of this article by outlining the basic requirements for efficient drying methods has unwittingly given the reasons why fluidized drying is rapidly being adopted for so many industrail applications, including the dryingof fine coal. An examination in greater detail of the individual basic requirements for efficient drying as outlined by the author is perhaps the most logical starting point.

During the cyanide leaching process of gold and silver, ores that come from the transition zones which typically con-tains low levels of sulfide may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide (HS ), polysulfides (Sn ), thiocyanate (SCN ), thiosulfate (S2O3 ), trithionate (S3O6 ), tetrathionate (S4O6 ), pentathionate (S5O6 ) and hexathionate (S6O6 ). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the re-dox potential, pH, cyanide levels and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reac-tive metal species. Development of an accurate analytical method for sul-fur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sul-fur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and development of an ion chromatography method to analyze the reduced sulfur species thiocyanate, thio-sulfate, trithionate and tetrathionate in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in the precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.
