Iron ore pellets made from concentrates produced from low grade iron ores are the primary iron bearing feedstock for iron making in North American blast furnaces. Steelmakers are demanding increasingly higher quality to provide for improved blast furnace productivity, efficiency, product quality and environmental compliance. Unfortunately, this higher quality iron ore product must be produced from the vast deposits of low grade iron ores that are becoming increasingly poorer in quality with regard to mineral liberation and ease of concentration. Since some of these low grade iron ores require grinding to as fine as 90% -500 mesh (25 microns) for liberation and since more of the silicious gangue and other minor undesirable constituents must be removed to provide the higher quality, we have come to depend on flotation to do the added work. Flotation technology and other preflotation unit operations must improve to meet these increasing demands. In many cases, flotation equipment, reagents and circuit operating performance have improved little during the last two to three decades. Mechanical flotation cells have grown from 14 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) to over 84 cubic meters (3000 cubic feet) to help reduce capital and operating costs; however, flotation metallurgical performance has not improved, Column flotation has only recently shown promise in improving metallurgical performance for iron ore rougher flotation. Previous column flotation success was mainly in scavenger and cleaner flotation steps for treating minerals other than iron ore. Although some new flotation chemicals have been developed for removal of silica and other minor constituents under widely varying mineralogical scenarios, recovery of iron mineral has not improved. The operation and control of flotation circuits have become more challenging because of the increasing workload on flotation. Better sensing, process control and operation of flotation circuits are essential as we go forward. Iron ore upgrading by flotation can be classified into either anionic or cationic methods. Anionic flotation of either iron oxide or silicious gangue is accomplished by collector type, pH control and selective chemical activation . Similarly, cationic flotation of silica or iron oxides is accomplished by collector type, activation and/or pH control. Removal of other minor constituents is achieved by using specialty chemicals under controlled conditions for preflotation, co-flotation or post flotation steps. Generally, anionic flotation is used for floating cleanly liberating crystalline oxidized iron ores such as hematite, specularite and martite. Earthy and hydrated oxides such as hematite and geothite can be upgraded with either anionic or cationic collectors after controlled dispersion of slimes or prior removal of slimes. Anionic flotation of silicious waste can be achieved by calcium activation of silica. For magnetic iron ores small amounts of locked silica particles (middlings) can be removed by cationic silica flotation, which is the only method in commercial use in North America today. Historically the efficiency of these iron ore flotation processes has been restricted by the loss of fine iron particles (minus 500 mesh) to the tailings product. New technology is required to overcome this loss and improve overall flotation performance. Development of technology for more selective separation of silica and other minor undesirable constituents from iron ore will provide both quality and cost benefits to the iron and steel producers. Development of future iron ore production in North America will face stiffer technical challenges. These new and undeveloped iron ore deposits are largely oxidized (non-magnetic) and by nature contain more slimes and other undesirable constituents. Unless other new technology evolves, flotation will be the major treatment process required to upgrade these difficult low grade iron ores.

INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. I have been asked to give you the National Coal Association's (NCA) view of the future of the coal industry. However, before discussing the outlook for the future I would like to set the stage by taking a brief look at how the industry has changed over the last decade. In 1977 the coal industry was in the midst of a period of steady growth. Although most of the gains in the early and mid 1970's occurred in the west, the industry was still predominately eastern, with eastern production accounting for 76 percent of the 697 million total tons produced in 1977. The labor force was nearing a high - at over 220,000 workers, and the number of active mines was also at a decade high of over 6,000. Productivity on the other hand was at a low. The average miner produced 1.80 tons per hour, and labor relations were also at a low point. Projections for coal's future were very optimistic, mainly because of the unprecedented growth in coal use by the utility industry. In 1977 the 477 million tons of utility coal accounted for 68 percent of U.S. coal production, and the utility industry planned on 129,000 MW of new coal-fired capacity over the next decade. Consumption of metallurgical coal at coke plants was the second largest market at 78 million tons; the industrial and residential market consumed 70 million tons and exports were at 54 million tons. But in retrospect, a lot was happening in 1977 that signalled many changes in the coal industry: - Amendments to the Clean Air Act were passed, which required that utilities take an entirely different approach to meeting New Source Performance Standards at new plants, and required that standards be set for industrial boilers as well; - the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act became law; -electrical generation, despite the optimistic forecasts, was nearing the end of a period of close to five percent annual growth; -1977 ended and 1978 began with the longest coal strike in U.S. history. -crude oil imports in the U.S. reached an all time high as did both total consumption of petroleum products in the U.S. and oil consumption at utilities. The high level of oil imports set the stage for the oil price increases of 1979 and 1980 which resulted in an immediate increase in demand for coal, not only in the United States, but world wide. Labor strikes in Australia and Poland sent foreign buyers to the U.S. literally in droves, and quickly made the U.S. a force in the world steam coal market. The U.S. coal and transportation industries responded to this overwhelming potential demand for coal. In a very short time, the capability had been developed to mine and transport the 1.2 billion tons of coal that forecasters said would be needed by the mid 1980's. What was not anticipated was that the economic effects of sharply higher oil prices would dampen demand for energy, especially for electricity, as quickly as we have seen; that coal industries in other countries would respond as rapidly as the U.S. coal industry, and at a rate

INTRODUCTION The County of Cornwall is situated in the South Western extremity of England, see Fig. 1, and has for hundreds of years been an historical centre of mining activity. In the last century many thousands of Cornish miners emigrated to Canada, U.S.A., Australia and numerous other countries throughout the world to form the nucleii of mining industries in those lands. At present there are four active underground mines within the county, all mining tin, together with a relatively large china clay industry. All the operations are directly or indirectly associated with the three main granite intrusions, namely the Land's End Granite, the Carnmenellis Granite and the Bodmin Moor Granite. The report which follows relates to two mines, owned by the South Crafty Group of Companies, namely the South Crofty Mine itself and its smaller subsidiary, Wheal Pendarves. Both these mines are adjacent to the Carn Brea Granite ridge, see Fig. 2, which is an off-shoot of the main Carnmenellis Granite mass. The Carn Brea Granite has provided one of the most intensive areas of copper and tin mineralisation anywhere in the world. Many of the mines worked during the last two centuries and the early part of this century were situated close to the metamorphic aureole surrounding the granite intrusion. Both South Crofty and Wheal Pendarves have their shafts collared in the overlying slate, locally known as killas, but the major part of their workings are in the granite beneath. The ore bodies, or lodes, of both mines are generally steeply dipping and approximately one to four metres in width. They have been, and continue to be, worked by either back or under-hand stoping with the major level interval being approximately 37 metres. A feature of both stoping systems is that they require no back filling and in many cases the completed working areas have remained open for many years due to the competent wall rock conditions. The stoping operation necessitates having box-holes or draw points at regular intervals along the strike length at 4 to 7 metres centres; thus a stope some 50 metres long may typically have ten box-holes or draw points through which air can percolate into the empty stopes above. The granite country rock contains traces of uranium minerals, namely pitchblende or uraninite, and it is the decay of this uranium mineral which leads to the formation of the mobile radon gas which, together with its short lived daughters, may create a hazard. The presence of uranium minerals has long been known, but the quantities being so minute, it was not appreciated until some ten to fifteen years ago that these might present a hazard. The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate approached Management approximately ten years ago with a view to taking samples in areas of the mine that they felt might contain the highest concentrations of radon. Samples were thus taken in several areas of both mines, normally well away from working areas and where there was no through ventilation. The results of these initial tests were published by the National Radiological Protection Board in a paper entitled "Radon and Its Daughters in Various British Mines". The results of the initial surveys made it apparent that improved ventilation was the most important factor in reducing radon daughter concentrations within the mine atmosphere, with increased flow rates having three beneficial functions, viz. (1) To dilute radon daughter concentrations. (2) To prevent radon and its daughters reaching a state of equilibrium. It is not uncommon for radon and its daughters to have a disequilibrium factor of 1,000 in some uranium mines.

INTRODUCTION The use of backfill materials in underground mines has been practiced for many years and the trend indicates an increased utilization of backfill materials in the future. The authors believe that underground uranium mines will follow this trend. Classified mill tailings, approximately 65 to 70 percent solids by weight, are the most common fill materials. Cement or other pozzolanic agents can be added to the fill materials to improve their strength characteristics. Dry fill, in the form of development muck, can also be introduced in the stopes to fill the voids left by the action of mining the ore. This paper deals mainly with the assessment of the radiation properties of backfill materials originating from uranium ores processed in the milling facilities of uranium mines. The paper outlines the results of studies conducted in the laboratory and in the field on radon emanating characteristics of backfill materials utilized in uranium mines. ROLE OF BACKFILL IN UNDERGROUND MINES Fill is a structural component of any underground mining system. In general terms, the purpose of filling is to provide ground support, to make recovery of pillars possible to provide a working platform for men and equipment, and to allow for waste disposal. There are other inherent advantages to the use of backfill underground, the most important being to: a) permit mining at greater depth b) allow the adoption of highly mechanized mining techniques c) reduce dilution from wall sloughing d) minimize roof and wall failures e) allow the mining of irregular orebodies, and f) to provide better control of ventilation. The last item is of great importance to uranium mine operators. The introduction of radioactive backfill underground represents an additional source of radioactive contamination; on the other hand the introduction of backfill in the mine reduces the volumes of workings to be ventilated. As a consequence the general mine ventilation is more effective and in most cases, better air quality can be maintained in the mine. There are of course some disadvantages associated with the use of hydraulic fills in underground mines, notably: a) the handling of large additional quantities of water from the underground workings b) delays caused by the cyclical nature of the backfilling operations c) additional costs associated with stope preparation and placement of backfill in stopes, and d) "spills" caused by bursting pipes or fill escaping from fill retaining structures. ASSESSMENT OF NON-RADIOACTIVE PROPERTIES Although the radioactive properties of mine backfills are discussed in this paper many other physical and chemical properties of backfills must also be considered. These properties include: a) percolation rate and permeability parameters b) viscosity versus pulp density relationships c) size analyses d) settling times e) settled bulk density f) solids specific gravity g) void ratio and porosity h) optimal percentage solids by weight i) specific gravity of slurry j) addition of cement:cement retention and loss k) unconfined compressive strength 1) triaxial compressive strength m) shear strength (non-cemented)

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. "Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). In this paper, the numerical simulation and field test methods are used to design the high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam water injection technology, so as to solve the difficult problem of coal dust control in high-pressure and low-porosity in deep well mining process."

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

The latest resource estimate for the Caspiche gold/silver/copper project in the Maricunga region of Chile was released by gold explorer Exeter Resource Corp. The resource is low grade, but bulk minable and drilling to date has shown a NI 43-101 compliant inferred resource of 1,117 Mt (1.23 billion st) grading 0.55 g/t (0.016 oz/st) gold, 3.81 g/t (0.111 oz/st) silver and 0.22 percent copper. Exeter said these findings make the in situ metals amounts of 609 t (19.6 million oz) of gold, 4.4 kt (137 million oz) of silver and 4.84 billion lbs of copper, which the company relates as 33.7 million gold equivalent ounces using assumed metal prices of $23.33/g ($800/oz) for gold, 35 cents/g ($12/oz) for silver and $2/lb for copper. The deposit is almost midway between Barrick?s Cerro Casale gold deposit and Kinross? Refugio Mine. In a statement Exeter chairman Yale Simpson said ?This updated resource estimate places Caspiche firmly among the world?s largest gold-copper discoveries in recent years and clearly supports our decision to aggressively drill the property, despite the global economic decline. ?We expect that the very substantial copper and silver credits will be extremely important, and will markedly impact the potential viability of Caspiche. Specifically, using metal prices of US$2/lb copper, $23.33/g ($800/oz) gold and 35 cents/g ($12/oz) silver, the 4.84 billion lbs of copper and 4.2 kt (137 million oz) of silver are equivalent to 376 kt and 62 t (12.1 and 2 million oz) of gold, respectively. ?Our recent drilling has defined what appears to be a coherent higher grade central zone associated with a definable early stage diorite intrusion. We expect this zone will be important in developing various mining and economic models for the project,? Simpson said. Exeter is still drilling the deposit to expand the re-source estimate further to the southeast and at depth and to upgrade the higher grade central zone to the indicated category. Simpson said, ?Exeter intends to enhance the value of Caspiche by continuing to de-risk the project through ongoing exploration, metallurgy, engineering, water and environmental studies. These studies will continue through the next 12 months and will lead to a conceptual development study. A timeline for the release of that study is being formulated. The project budget for the next 12 months is C$14 million.? Mineweb reported that Caspiche is likely too big of a deposit and at too high of altitude for Exeter to handle alone. Exeter will be looking to other majors, or perhaps the Chinese, to help develop this huge orebody. But, in the meantime, it also has its high grade Cerro Moro deposit in Argentina, which could be brought to production relatively quickly and at relatively low cost.

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. Methane drainage on a mine-wide scale is a relatively new technology to South African coal mines. Shallow seams and apparently low methane contents have been assumed to result in less methane problems than experienced in other countries. The introduction of deeper mines however, has now resulted in methane drainage taking on a higher priority. Methane contents in the region of 12 m3\t have resulted in one colliery introducing drainage as a ventilation support. Although a low seam permeability initially indicated reduced potential for drainage, early borehole flows of 90 m3\m\year have since increased to 450 m3\m\year. Rapid inflow of methane into goafs and sealed areas from seams surrounding the main production seam at another colliery have warranted extensive evaluation of the methane properties of these seams with the projected introduction of predrainage from surface. Methane pressures in excess of 1000 kPa and contents in the region of 10 m3\t again give methane volumes suitable for drainage. Coal seam drainage ahead of mining is becoming more significant and is likely to see an increase in the near future. INTRODUCTION Methane gas is an everpresent hazard associated with underground coal mining. Safe working levels of methane in the mine atmosphere are normally maintained by ventilation practises, ensuring sufficient dilution of the gas. However in some cases the ventilation must be assisted by methane drainage, either from the mined seam, or from adjacent seams and strata, or from goafed areas. South African collieries have practised only limited methane drainage until now. Relatively shallow mining depths, and apparently low in-seam methane contents have been assumed to result in fewer problems with methane than are the normal for other countries. This is now being shown to not necessarily be the situation. Work carried out by the Coal Mining division of COMRO (Cook and Erwee, 1991) indicates South African production coal seams have very similar methane retention properties to those of coals in other countries, with seam gas contents of up to 12 m3/t. This awareness, as well as greater mining depths, and higher degrees of mechanisation, has resulted in higher priority being given to methane emission problems throughout the industry. Increased levels of safety, as well as possible commercial applications, are the main reasons for the interest now being shown in methane drainage. Not only is there possible applications in the present production coalfields, but South Africa has vast areas of coal reserves which are presently non-mineable, now being seen as possible alternative energy sources. Limited methane drainage is practised within the industry, but only on collieries that have identified specific methane problems that can be alleviated by drainage. Historically this has been restricted to surface drainage of longwall goafs, reducing emissions onto the faces. More recently, horizontal in-seam holes have been drilled, until now for bord and pillar sections, but the results are being evaluated for later application to shortwall faces. Adjacent seams pose problems at some sites and vertical and cross measure boreholes are now being considered.

INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. Semiautogenous milling was the subject of 18 papers presented at the SME Fall Meeting in Albuquerque, NM. The process design and scale-up of SAG mills was discussed in several papers. These included a review of testing methods for the sizing of SAG mills by Barrett and Allan. Austin et al. presented an improved simulation model for SAG mill grinding, with model validity demonstrated against pilot plant SAG mill test results. Rogovin et al. presented some pilot plant results relating to the charge motion, hold-up, and particle size segregation in SAG mills. A number of papers described improvements achieved in operating SAG mill circuits. These included presentations by Dailey concerning mills at the National Steel Pellet Co., by Brown and Pipke concerning the Island Copper grinding circuit, by Lovering of Afton Mines Ltd., and by Bartrum et al. of Kidston Gold Mines Ltd. Bush and Hegerle of Amax also discussed SAG mill operations at the company's Henderson mill. They addressed the topics of SAG mill grinding economics. Other papers addressed the topics of SAG mill control (Vanderbeek et al. and Pennington), grinding media (Meulendyke et al.), liners (Kjos), and fabrication (Carr and Utley). The 1985 AIME Annual Meeting in New York featured four technical sessions concerning size reduction technology and practice. Papers involving fundamentals included one by Hinde describing simulation model usage for quantifying the classification and concentration of heavy minerals in grinding circuits. Another, by Rogers et al., discussed simulation models that were used as a design aid in evaluating screens versus hydrocyclones for fine grinding circuits. Arbiter discussed dimensional considerations in grinding mill design, and Schwechten and Schonert proposed the use of a high pressure roll mill as a means for reducing energy requirements in fine grinding. Internal classification in tumbling mills was the subject of a paper by Hogg and Rogovin. The mechanism of internal classification were identified and their effects illustrated. Simulation for the process design of ball mills was exemplified in a paper by Rogers, Austin, and Brame concerning phosphate grinding in laboratory to large diameter mills. The incorporation of liberation into size reduction models was the subject of papers by Austin et al., Herbst et al., and Choi et al. Gupta used simulations models to further investigate zero order fines production in ball and rod mills. Of the published literature, many articles on size reduction were published in various publications in 1985. Articles concerning ball mill grinding included an analysis of interstitial gas effects in dry grinding by Cottaar et al., an analysis of mill grinding noise by Watson, studies of factors affecting breakage rates in dry milling by Gupta et al., and in wet milling by Tangsathitkuchai and Austin. Austin and Klimpel presented two papers concerning ball wear and ball size distribution effects. Koka et al., and Gotsis et al., described recent developments concerning the Szego mill. A model for hammer milling circuits was described in papers by Gotsis et al. and Gotsis and Austin. Heim et al. reported on wet grinding in Perl mills, and Kuga et al. presented findings concerning pulverizing in a screen mill. Studies of grinding effects on particle surfaces were published by Meloy and Hofmann et al., and Scieszka proposed a technique to investigate pulverizing properties of coals. Austin and Rogers discussed factors of powder technology of significance in industrial size reduction in mills and crushers. (Space limitations preclude listing of references. At this 5th U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium I would like to focus your attention on safety and the contribution of the ventilation engineer over the past 50 years. This conference affords us the opportunity to express, to listen, and to learn. As ventilation engineers it is indeed an exciting time--a time that not only stimulates our imagination but also pin points our aims in our quest to obtain zero fatalities by the year 2000, the goal expressed by William J. Tattersall, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration. In the past, coal mine ventilation has often been unfortunately synonymous with explosions and resulting fires. Those not familiar with us do not recognize the painful evolution of the coal mining industry and particularly the evolution of mine ventilation. To put my presentation into perspective, I recently reviewed a U.S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 586 - "Historical Summary of Coal-Mine Explosions in the United States 1810 - 1958 prepared by H. B. Humphrey Mining Health and Safety Engineer. This bulletin was published in 1960. Mr. Humphrey stated "In 1946, factors contributing to the explosions occurring from 1941 to 1945 were: (1) The rapid increase in the use of electrical equipment at face regions where gas and dust are most likely to be found; (2) the increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost, which in many mines has resulted in neglect of even rudimentary precautionary measures; (3) multiple-shift operation without provision of time for adequate maintenance of equipment, effective rock dusting, and testing for gas; (4) decrease in supervision owing to demands on supervisors for maximum tonnage and loss of competent supervisors to other employment; (5) lack of effective supervision, owing to numerous new conditions, some of them war-connected; (6) inability to obtain adequate equipment repair and replacement parts; (7) shortage of labor and inadequate training of coal-mine workers; and (8) failure of both miners and mining officials to show regard for safety in changing from hand-loading to mechanized methods". Most of the eight factors listed by Mr. Humphrey continue to affect our work lives as mining engineers. The increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost has never changed. The local and regionalized coal industry of the 40's is today competing against the world coal market. Our mines work or shut down based on cost. This has always been the case. During the five year time-frame Mr. Humphrey was documenting, 345 miners were killed in major explosions. A major explosion was one in which five or more miners were killed in a single accident. In addition, 105 more miners were killed in minor explosions for a total of 450. What a wanton waste of life. What fears, anxieties, miseries, and sufferings were created by these accidents. However, we must remember and keep in mind that the coal mining company officials, engineers, and foremen, the governmental agencies- federal, state, and local - were using the technical tools and knowledge available to operate the mines as safely as they could. Obviously mine ventilation engineering technology was woefully inadequate.

The South African mining industry currently installs about 6 km per month of plastic pipes for conveying compressed air and water. Plastic pipes have a number of desirable properties and are favoured by many mining engineers because of their low mass, which facilitates ease of erection and assembly, and their excellent corrosion resistance and durability. However, they are combustible, and if involved in an underground fire can contribute to the overall toxicity of the combustion gases emitted. Furthermore, plastic pipes have the potential to conduct a fire from one part of a mine to another, and, by so doing, exacerbate an already hazardous situation. The limitations of small scale tests and the need to establish a large facility where underground conditions could be simulated was recognized by the South African mining industry. This paper briefly describes the Industry's full scale fire test facility and presents the conclusions drawn as a result of a number of full scale combustibility tests conducted on pipes manufactured from unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride (uPVC) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Based on these findings, some practical solutions to prevent the spread of fire along the length of pipe columns of various pipe diameters and suspension configurations are presented. Recently some new and exciting developments in the field of intumescent coatings have occurred which are proving effective in minimizing the incidence of fire underground on South African mines. The potential benefits of these coatings are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Plastic pipes used underground on mines are predominantly in the form of protective cladding on insulated chilled water pipes and as service pipes for the conveying of water and compressed air to the workings. Plastic pipes have found wide use in the aggressive environmental conditions encountered underground due to their favourable properties relative to steel; these include being lightweight, easily installed and virtually immune to corrosion. However, plastic pipes are inherently combustible and can contribute to the overall hazard in three ways: (i) they are easily ignitable and can provide the initial fuel for a fire. (ii) once ignited, they can propagate a fire along their length and by so doing ignite other combustibles in their path, thereby contributing significantly to the overall conflagration. (iii) they can contribute to the overall heat, smoke and toxic gas emissions from a fire. While conscious of the value of small scale fire tests, the South African mining industry recognized the need for full scale testing to determine the combustion characteristics of plastic pipes under conditions closely approximating those underground and, as a consequence, a full scale fire tunnel test facility was commissioned with the objective of being able to (a), accurately evaluate the potential hazard of the various types of the plastic pipes found in mines, (b) use this information to suggest suitable fire engineering practices to minimize the hazard and (c), to practically verify the efficacy of the practices suggested. THE FIRE TUNNEL The fire tunnel is situated on a mine in the Western Transvaal and is 40 m long with a cross section of 3 m x 3 m which is typical of many haulages currently in use in South African gold mines. The ventilation drawn through the tunnel is provided by a 110 kW centrifugal exhaust fan and air velocities can be varied from 0 to a maximum of 5,8 m/s.

I'm really very pleased to be talking with you today about the environmental impacts of gold ore processing as part of this symposium on emerging process technologies for a cleaner environment. But before I talk about some of the newer developments that are coming, I would like to set the stage by reviewing some of the recent past. Over the last decade or so the U.S. gold mining industry has experienced remarkable growth, primarily in heap leaching operations, and not surprisingly there has been parallel growth of environmental regulations. At Homestake, we have had the excitement of bringing on-line a new mine embodying state-of-the-art technology and environmental planning, and during the same period the flagship of our company, the Homestake mine, has been brought into modern day compliance through the application of innovative environmental technology. This has been a learning process; in both cases we found that we had to develop new ways to meet our objectives. At our McLaughlin mine in California a major achievement was pioneering the use of pressure oxidation, or autoclaves, for refractory gold ores, and at the Homestake it was the development of a unique bio-treatment plant for wastewater. These projects were developed balancing operational goals, environmental concerns and costs, and I would submit that being cost-effective is our greatest challenge in the development of new, environmentally sound, process technology. In meeting that challenge, our job has not been made any easier by the myriad environmental laws and regulations that directly affect the design and operation of our facilities. Most of these constraints have evolved through the political process more or less independently, but in their application there often are over-lapping provisions. Adding to this complexity is the fact that action takes place in both state and federal arenas. As a result, state and federal roles sometimes become intertwined, and a good case in point is provided by various cyanide issues faced by gold producers. The vast majority of U.S. gold mining takes place in the so-called "mineral States," the western States that come under the Mining Law of 1872 as amended. This is the basic statute that provides for access and tenure to develop mineral resources on federal lands in those states. There is gold mining outside the defined mineral States, and there is also gold mining in the mineral States on private lands. Our own Homestake mine in South Dakota is one of the best examples of the latter category: located entirely on private land, it is nevertheless subject to at least 13 federal environmental statutes and some 29 federal regulatory requirements. There are also nine significant state statutory and regulatory requirements that apply. On federal lands in the mineral States there are numerous federal statutes and regulations which affect mining, over and above the current Mining Law. These, which are in addition to the laws applying to private land, include the National Environmental Protection Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, among others. Still, those who advocate radical changes in the basic Mining Law would have us believe that sweeping environmental protection and reclamation provisions, not to mention new land use restrictions, are needed. Such changes could effectively prohibit mining on the federal public lands. Strict enforcement of our current Mining Law would have presented most of the abuses cited by the critics but if the Law is to be changed at all, I believe that, at a minimum, the principles of self-initiation and security of tenure embodied in the present statute should be maintained. These are critically important concepts, but there are other statutory and regulatory issues constantly before us as gold miners. The movement of air from the surface, through the workings and then back to the surface, is the most important consideration in the ventilation design. The purpose of mine ventilation is seen as the maintenance of acceptable atmospheric environments wherever men work or travel underground; and acceptability is related to the risk of harmful biological responses associated with exposure to atmospheric environments in mines. In mine ventilation, a design engineer often has to contend with a number of problems not experienced to the same degree in other industrial situations; i.e. the vast extent of many workings - offering continuously moving work locations; the difficulty of predicting. inflows of contaminants to the airways which contain the micro-environment; and especially, the effect of mining activity within the duct system (e.g. mine roadways) carrying the airflow. Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported from the mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits very from area to area and between different mines. 1 In uranium mining, in addition to eliminating noxious gases from blasting, diesel equipment exhaust, and the control of dust, it is also necessary to dilute and remove radon, the gaseous element in the uranium chain and its decay products. Long term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia have confirmed that there is an association between excessive ex¬posure to radon daughters and an increased risk of lung cancer. The common practices for controlling these airborne contaminants are: (1) the circulation of large volumes of fresh air from surface to dilute these contaminants to a permissible concentration, and (2) the sealing of worked-out areas to prevent ingress of radon into ventilating air. 2 The sealing of worked-out areas can be easily and effectively accomplished, but the contaminants intro¬duced from the workings may raise the concentrations in the airways despite a good ventilation system and use of the maximum available amount of fresh air. The ventilating air can be strategically filtered to reduce dust and radon daughters to acceptable levels, and reused prior to final discharge. This strategy properly applied, will decrease the air colume requirements in certain marginal areas of the mine and thereby avoid an overall increase in the mine airflow. This is particularly advantageous in the cold climates of Canada, where the incoming fresh air must be heated in the winter months to a comfortable temperature, Thus, an economical and technically feasible air filtration system, strategically placed, can improve the underground mining environment and reduce the overall cost of ventilating the mines. In addition to affording flexibilty to the venti¬lation system, a potential saving of $1,500/m3/s/year would be realized if air is successfully cleaned and reused when compared with the conventional methods of generating an air current. 3 Denison is justly proud of its achievements in the air filtration technology development. This paper limits itself to an examination of the radiation control aspect of the air filtration strategy.

The purity of rare earth products depends on the ability of the reagents used to selectively promote the precipitation of the rare earth elements (REE) from impurities present in sulfuric liquors. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REE, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with a low Al3+ and UO2 2+ and a very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO4 2− impurity content. The rare earth sulfuric liquor was obtained in a previous study by the reaction of a rare earth ore with sulfuric acid, pyrolysis at 700 °C/2 h, cooling at 20 °C, and water leaching. The impurities such as Fe3+, Th4+, and PO4 3− were completely removed from the liquor in two consecutive neutralization steps. In order to recover the REE, the purified rare earth liquor was then treated with oxalic acid and sodium carbonate. Rare earth oxides (REO) precipitated with oxalic acid displayed a very high purity (99.2% w/w) and low impurity content. In contrast, the rare earth carbonates precipitated with sodium carbonate presented a comparatively lower REO content (68.5% w/w) and 94.2% of purity, but with a higher content of impurities. Better precipitating conditions were achieved at 60 °C, compared with 20 °C, and under stoichiometric reagent consumption, with REE precipitation efficiencies higher than 96%. The dosage above the stoichiometric condition caused the precipitation of calcium oxalates and co-precipitation of rare earth sulfates when oxalic acid is used, and precipitation of calcium, manganese, and uranium carbonates and also a co-precipitation of rare earth sulfate when sodium carbonate were used. An integrated flowsheet to produce a high-quality rare earth product from rare earth sulfuric liquor containing some impurities is proposed.
