The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regards "whole diesel exhaust" as "a potential occupational carcinogen." Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, N02, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols. The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality. Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters. Concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3.

Introduction A study was completed that investigated the enrollment in mining engineering programs in 24 universities and colleges. All programs considered in the study award four-year bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering. They also provide all the engineers for the mining industry and a large portion of the geotechnical engineers working on environmental problems, storage of hazardous waste, civic, and Federal government underground projects. The numbers used as the base for the study are those reported by each program to SME-AIME and published yearly (SME, 1986). Data for the study came from the period 1975-1985. Also, since some programs include students in related disciplines and special categories, such as cooperative students, a few inaccuracies were unavoidable. A 23-page document has been prepared that reports on the overall picture of current enrollment, the trends, and discusses the results, perceived effects, and what can, or should, be done. There has been an obvious, and dramatic decrease in total undergraduate enrollment since the late 1970s. In 1978, 3117 students were enrolled. In the 1985 fall semester, enrollment was 1022, less than one-third. There were 485 seniors, 265 juniors, 147 sophomores, and 125 freshmen. The downward trend in total enrollment is likely to continue for at least another two years. Class size The catastrophic drop in enrollment is shared by all programs across the country. It does not discriminate between types of programs, coal or hard rock mining, or location. In general, 1985's enrollment is about 30% of whatever the maximum enrollment was in any program, though this varies from the teens to 50%. The latter percentage occurs only for some programs with special circumstances, particularly new programs not well established in the late 1970s. The beginning of the decline in enrollment has occurred at slightly different times as affected by the demise of each program's local industry. The numbers in each class produced from a specific freshmen year (Fig. 1) are worthy of comment. The dramatic drop in enrollment for all classes after 1982 is clearly demonstrated. The timing coincides with the general downturn in the mining industry, when many employed engineers were laid off and new graduates could not find jobs. Also, significantly fewer students are being attracted to mining programs as freshmen. The number of seniors shown seems inappropriate. Where did so many seniors come from and why are so few graduates produced? There is an increasing trend for students to take four-and-a-half or five years to graduate. Therefore, they are counted twice, once when they are first classed as seniors and again the following year. Some students purposely delay graduation to obtain more summer work experience and take additional courses. They believe that this gives them a better

1.1. INTRODUCTION Despite indications of a general economic recovery in the U.S. during the mid-19801s, mine operators have not generally shared in the benefits of these reported better times. Budgets have not rebounded, borrowing is tougher, parent companies' pockets are not as deep as in previous years, and margins are not any better -- if there is any left over at all. Managing capital equipment budgets is always a challenge, and the last five years of stretched equipment lives make these decisions more tenuous. Delays and avoidance of replacements due to tough times inevitably makes those decisions increasingly difficult and usually more expensive The purposes of this paper are to present. a brief refresher outline of the fundamentals of equipment replacement analysis, to suggest a number of papers where analysis methods are explained in greater detail. and to recommend the use of a widespread microcomputer software capability (1-2-3) as the easiest path to a much-needed solution for a very difficult, and usually under-supported management decision problem 2. REPLACEMENT DECISION POLICY Investments in equipment replacements must compete for capital with all other investment alternatives. Capital for replacements of ten represents a greater commitment than do the new projects which a company might handle in a given year. But. sadly, formal policies for standardized analysis of replacements rarely exist, even in major companies. Yet this policy can be very significant in determining the competitiveness of a firm. Whereas many replacement decisions are based on cost minimization, economists and financial analysts agree that wealth maximization or return on investment is the superior criterion. Though the difference may seem slight, agreement on a firm's financial objective is vital. Replacement policy should be straight- forward. have a logical basis, and a proper level of sophistication. There are several reasons to develop a policy for replacement decision-making: [I] 1 - equipment's optimal economic life is nearly always shorter than its physical life; 2 - mine life often exceeds equipment life, so management must face these decisions routinly 3 - replacement capital costs, on an undiscounted basis, can run 25 to 75% of original capital 4 - technological changes may result in a newer machine or system which can operate more efficiently, more safely. or less expensively 5 - estimates should be made consistently in the fundamental areas of life expectancy, availability, utilization. price escalation, taxes 6 - long-term and short-term budgeting without decent data and analytical capability is nearly impossible, or at least ineffective Policy development assumptions which must be considered include: the planning horizon, cost patterns, interest rates, availability of capital, replacement vs. expansion, technology advances.

INTRODUCTION Certain activities, such as emergency work and rescue operations, often have to be undertaken in environments where heat loads often exceed limits prescribed for routine work. This is particularly relevant to the South African mining industry where heat stress-induced fatalities are not uncommon during rescue operations. In this regard an excessively hot environment is defined as one where either the dry-bulb temperature exceeds 37,0°C or the wet-bulb temperature exceeds 32,5"C, and it is therefore not surprising that heat stroke mortality escalates rapidly when these limits are exceeded. A review of both local and international standards indicated that the available information on safe exposure times under abnormal heat stress conditions is very limited. Where available, such standards are aimed at the general population, including both sexes, irrespective of age and also the least heat tolerant worker, and not at a medically-screened, all-male population free of grossly heat intolerant individuals, as is the case in the South African mining industry. It is suggested that available norms and limits are too conservative for local application and, therefore, unrealistic. In view of the definite need to protect workers when exposed to abnormally high environmental temperatures, the present study was undertaken to establish a scientifically derived data base. applicable to local conditions, to determine safe exposure times: Any exposure limit, especially in an emergency situation, should be easy to administer, valid and reliable. These aspects, there- fore, form an integral part of this paper. FORMULATION OF HEAT STRESS LIMITS The formulation of heat stress limits was based on the criterion that a heat exposed individual should experience a negligible risk of developing dangerously elevated body temperatures. In order to provide a database for risk assessment, certain physiological responses of heat tolerant men were determined at various combinations of thermal conditions and work rate in a climatic chamber. These physiological responses were analysed statistically in order to predict safe survival and tolerance times as a function of thermal conditions and work rate. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN A total of 202 randomly selected, medically fit mine workers volunteered for the study on the basis of informed consent. These men were considered to be inherently heat tolerant in as far as they had successfully completed a heat tolerance test (Anon., 1991) or the standard climatic room acclimatisation procedure used on many South African gold mines (Anon., 1989). Overshot loaders are loading machines which fill a front-mounted bucket by crowding and bucket lifting, passing the loaded bucket over the machine and throw¬ing the load into a haulage unit to the rear. The load is retained in the bucket as the load mass is accelerated in its path over the machine. At the point of discharge, the bucket is stopped suddenly and the load leaves the bucket, following the throw trajectory past the rear of the loader. Fig. 1 shows a typical overshot loader of this type. Overshot loaders were developed for loading in nar¬row drift headings and drawpoints, where it is impossible to place or pass a haulage unit alongside the loader. Haulage access is to the rear of all overshot loaders. The first overshot loader was developed in the early 1930s. The early machines were rail-mounted, air¬powered, and had small loading capacities. To this day, the same basic design configuration exists, and all suc¬cessful overshot loaders still use compressed air. Bucket sizes range from 0.14 to 0.59 m3 (5 to 21 cu ft). The most commonly used machines are rail-mounted, al¬though crawler versions are popular for special applica¬tions, particularly shaft sinking. Rubber-tired machines have found some application where a greater travel distance is required between the loading and discharge points. CONDITIONS INFLUENCING APPLICATION Roadway Type Rail-mounted loaders are used where soft bottom requires rail support or where the long haul is ac¬complished with rail. This situation usually occurs in civil tunnels or in mine drifts that will continue to utilize rail-bound main haulage after development work is completed. Crawler and rubber-tire mounted loaders are used where the roadway surface is rough and lateral travel beyond the range of rail-bound machines is required. Work Area Dimensions The largest rail-bound loaders can clean roadways as wide as 4 m (13 ft) from a single track. Wider headings require multiple trackage. Headroom require¬ments are dependent upon the path described by the bucket as it passes over the machine. The largest over¬shot loader requires approximately 3.4 m (11 ft) of headroom. It follows that the largest heading that can be driven by overshot loaders from a single set of rails is approximately 4 m (13 ft) wide and a minimum of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) high above the rail. The smallest rail-bound loaders can work efficiently in headings as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) wide by 1.8 m (6 ft) high above the rail.

"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

INTRODUCTION The Panna Maria Uranium Project is located in South Texas, between San Antonio and Corpus Cristi, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Karnes City, Texas. The tailings disposal facilities are located immediately south of the mill area and the central portion of the west pit. The mine and mill drainage pond is located north of the tailings pond. Location of the facilities is shown in Figure 1. The tailings pond is a disposal area for mill process wastes and has a capacity for storage of approximately 9 million metric tons (10 million tons) of tailings. This capacity is adequate for approximately 10 years of milling at a maximum rate of 2,700 metric tons (3,000 tons) per day. The tailings disposal facilities were designed to essentially eliminate discharge of contaminated waters to preclude degradation of surface streams or ground water. Water levels in the ponds will be maintained. through reuse in the mill and by evaporation. WASTE CHARACTERISTICS The sources of waste that is stored in the tailings pond include runoff from the mill area and tailings from the mill processing. The tailings consist of a sand slime slurry; the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve varies depending on the ore material, and it is generally in the range of 10 to 25 percent. The tailings have a density of approximately 1.2 metric tons per cu m (75 lb per cu ft) and an average specific gravity of 2.55. The liquid effluent from the mill consists of waste solutions from the grinding, leaching, extraction, and washing circuits of the mill. These solutions have an initial pH of 1.5 to 2.0 and contain the remnants of the leaching agents used in the mill process, sulfates, some silica as the primary dissolved solid, and trace quantities of soluble metals. This liquid is discharged with the solids into the tailings pond and is diluted by rainfall and runoff from the tailings dam. Runoff from the mill area, drainage from the mine area, and de-oiled water from truck washing facilities is discharged into the mine and mill drainage pond. Runoff from the mill area drains approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) from offices, shops, the mill site, the ore pad, haul roads, and adjacent areas. Mine drainage is collected in the mine area and pumped to the mine and mill drainage pond.

The paper presents the outline of the results in the algorithms and software of the microprocessor-based system for the powerful drugline bucket automatic motion, as well as the technological process control and functional diagnostics of the electrical equipment. The system is, aimed at the increasing both the draglines' working efficiency and the professional, competence of the operators. The excavator-dragline, equipped by the automatized operation, diagnostic and information processing system, possesses considerable technological: flexibility, which can widen therefore its field of application. The tasks of the dragline bucket motion optimal operation, programming of the excavation and overburden dumping processes, as well as the tasks of the control and the analysis of the technological parameters and the diagnostics of electrical equipment conditions, are defined in the paper. In our paper we present the results of these tasks being solved, providing the algorithms of the main mechanisms for the automatic operation for the swinging bucket controlled motion, the algorithms of the statistical analysis of the working efficiency parameters the algorithms of the diagnostics for electrical driving systems. The algorithms of the motion operation are constructed using the predicting dynamic models. The diagnostic algorithms at the normal working conditions form a number of algebraic invariants always equal to Ø with the accuracy up to when the electrical equipment is parametrically adequate. The algorithms of evaluating and analysis of the excavation efficiency make use of the direct measurement and analytical identification. The working condition and quality of the operation and control algorithms are investigated by simulation and natural testing. The results of the mathematical simulation of the bucket motion (with the 20 m3 capacity) of the excavator-dragline with the boom of 90 m in length are given in the paper.

"The technical lifetime of underground structures does not only depend on the long-term behavior of individual support elements and material characteristics, but also on various boundary conditions, which influence the entire long-term system behavior of the structure. Thanks to the construction of second tunnel tubes and the corresponding cross passages sampling of support materials such as shotcrete, concrete of the inner lining and rock bolts including sheet membranes is possible. To evaluate the stresses and the supporting effects of the tunnel shells, flat-jack tests and different simulations were performed. With these simulations the percentage of the load bearing behavior of the shotcrete shell can be determined. From the results, conclusions for new design approaches for tunnel construction should be generated. New concepts, in which the outer lining is part of the permanent support elements can be considered. This approach would be applicable for conventional as well as mechanical tunneling. INTRODUCTION Tunnels are an indispensable part of modern transport infrastructure. As multi-generation structures their long-term preservation as well as their technical service life is of central importance. The current state of research in the field of durability of structural elements must be considered separately. In almost all areas a prediction of materials and structural components towards lifetime exists. System-wide investigations were rarely performed, so that there is no technical lifetime consideration of the outer lining in systems included. In this study the mechanical behavior of the interface connection in a double shell lining (DSL) tunnel was investigated in laboratory tests. Objective The target of this work is, at first, to create a large database with the lifetime of different structural elements and materials, which may be the basis of durability considerations of tunnels. Secondly, the goal of these investigations is to optimize tunnel designs and their dimensioning regarding to the technical lifetime. For that matter, it is necessary to analyze the selected approaches of the loss of strength and stiffness of the outer lining."

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.

Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May. INTRODUCTION "When there is an economic need for cleaning fine coal to low ash, the technical difficulties will be solved. The utilization of fines below 28 mesh will determine the degree to which beneficiation will be carried. Whenever these "fines" will be processed into smokeless fuels or used as new materials for the chemical industry or for hydrogenation, a higher degree of cleaning will be economically justified”.(l) This quote from the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation correctly anticipates the use of fines as "smokeless" fuel or as a future component of boiler fuel and a1 so as a raw material for the chemical industry or possible new uses such as for internal combustion engines. Fines utilization depends upon an economic need and possibly neglects to say an environmental need or a government funded development program as the prime mover for development. In any event, this conference is faced with the "need" to beneficiate fine coal and undoubtedly among the processes that will be discussed are the unit processes of future coal preparation facilities. HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT It is interesting to look at where we have been, where we are now and where we possibly will be in the future. In order to put some limitations on this presentation, we will for the most part confine our remarks to this century and particularly developments since World War II. We also will limit our remarks to the preparation of bituminous coals in the United States, and for the most part, to wet processes. In the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation, clues to the processes being used to beneficiate coal are contained in the Chapter Titles. An extensive treatment of "Hand Picking" was contained in Chapter 8. Chapter 7 contained a description of methods for "Preparation at the Face". Chapter 18 dealt with "Slurries, Sludges, Slimes and Water Treatment" and defined this size of coal as being the size at which "Jigs and Chance Cones are usually dispensed with and other methods such as the hydrator, tables, and froth flotation are employed. Generally the limit is 1.7mm to 3.4mm. In the days before World War I1 the then modern bituminous coal preparation plant contained jigs or Chance Cones for the coarse material +6.35mm, concentrating tables, launders or some classifier type of coal washer for the fines (6.35 x 0.15mm), and froth flotation as the only method of cleaning minus 0.15mm coal which was used very sparingly.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

My qualification to speak on the globalization of the the mining industry comes from having worked in the industry in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia in positions ranging from exploration geologist to chief executive. For about a third of my career I have lived and worked in the Southern Hemisphere. And for much of the rest of my career I have been involved in or responsible for activities in the Southern Hemisphere. This has given me the opportunity to experience globalization from the sharp end, as it were. This means speaking English with an Australian accent, Spanish with a Chilean accent, French with a West African accent and Dutch with an English accent. My topic is globalization, especially of the mining industry from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and specifically the experience and history of Gencor in that context. First, I will say a little about what globalization means to the southern part of the world: How and why the South differs from the North and how the challenge of globalization affects a south-based company differently than a northern one. I will also detail how Gencor has made significant progress in globalizing through the acquisition of mining assets from Shell. As Fig. 1 shows, I have divided up the world into northern and southern components, rather than hemispheres. The southern world comprises mainly countries that have emerged from the status of economic - if not political - colonies of nations such as England, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and, surprisingly, Italy and Germany. I have not considered the Indochinese and Arabian peninsulas in my southern world. The emergence of the. former is still in its early stages while the latter is clearly a part of the northern economic system. Large parts of Africa and South America are geometrically in the Northern Hemisphere but economically in the southern world. The reverse is the case for the IndoPersian peninsula. With the distinguished exception of Australia and South Africa, most of these countries nationalized their mining industries and mineral patrimony after attaining political independence. A major element of the globalization of the mining industry is related to the privatization of the mining industry in these countries and to the opening up of their min¬eral patrimony to non-national exploitation. The Southern Hemisphere is the watery part of the world. It is almost three quarters ocean as against a slight preponderance of land in the north. Economically, ocean areas have only a fraction of the productivity of land, except in a few oil-rich areas like the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. The consequence is that even on an economically level playing field we would expect the south to generate only about one third of the world's economic product.

The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. In this situation it is vital that contaminants be identified so that the process can be adjusted

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.
