[THIS bibliography lists publications issued by the Bureau of Mines concerned with investigations on petroleum and natural gas. The items included are chosen for their continuing interest and value. It was recognized early that a list of petroleum and natural gas publications was needed for the Bureau's work, and unofficial publication of a ?straight forward listing? was begun. It was at first a chronological list; however, suggestions submitted by its users prompted a formed change to show publications under broad, general topics. Author and subject indexes were developed, becoming more detailed with each new edition. This present list supersedes the ones compiled in 1949, 1952, and 1957, and several supplements, which were aside available to the public by the Library Of the Bureau?s Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center. The unofficial field publication came to be widely known and in considerable demand by those who are primarily interested in the Bureau's publications on petroleum and natural gas so that it became, desirable to have it published as an Information Circular. It is hoped that this official publication will result in a wider and more effective use of the Bureau's research results which are reported in its publications.]

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

"A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. The first phase of our work for PMSRC on this contract was devoted to a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of electromagnetic (EM) noise measurements and data taken by several contractors for use in the design of operational and emergency mine communications. Pertinent measurements and data of other selected investigators were also included in the evaluation. This assessment treated the measurements and instrumentation used, the data analysis and presentation methods, and the utility of the final results. This phase concluded with the identification of the most useful results and methods, the remaining data gaps, the contractor most qualified to fill these data gaps, and the definition (with PMSRC and this contractor - NBS, National Bureau of Standards) of a follow-on noise measurement program, instrumentation system, and data processing methods tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. A partial bibliography of references related to electromagnetic and seismic noise and propagation in the frequency bands of interest was also compiled during this first phase. The body of this Part of the final report presents a summary of the findings of our EM noise assessment, together with detailed recommendations regarding the new noise measurements to be taken and the instrumentation and data processing methods to be used. This work was done during the latter part of 1971 and the early part of 1972. Hydraulic cutting tests made on samples of Pennsylvania anthracite (3,700 psi and 260 gpm) were promising enough for the Bureau to establish a full scale experiment in an anthracite mine. Water pressure and quantity for mining anthracite were arbitrarily established at 5,000 psi and 300 gpm (1,000 hp). For full-volume flow, hydraulic pressure is controlled by orifice size with the displacement pump. The hydraulic jumbo was designed for maneuvering on pitches from 0° to 20° in any direction and for a coalbed ranging in thickness from 10 feet 6 inches to 15 feet. All motions of the jumbo are by oil hydraulics. Jet flow is controlled (start-stop) at the face, through an interlocked pushbutton system. One button is in the operator's cab; one, at the pump station; and one (a safety shutoff), near the mining face. To December 1962, 7,400 tons of bed material had been mined at an average rate of 0.800 ton per minute, with an average power requirement of 14.125 kilowatt-hours per ton. In January 1963, the objective was changed from an engineering-development basis to a research basis--to determine, ultimately, the most efficient level of operating characteristics for maximum response, as measured by mining-out rate. This research phase of the project is not yet complete, but conclusions, and the method of arriving at them, will be made the subject of another Bureau publication. It should be noted that as of December 1963 nearly 13,000 tons of bed material had been mined, at rates as high as 1. 3 tons per minute for a complete face advance.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industry despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. In order to reduce cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, retrofit acoustic treatments and controls are being developed to subdue noise at the source. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2005 has determined that continuous mining machines rank first among all mining equipment whose operators exceed 100% noise dosage. The continuous mining machine conveyor, used to move coal from the cutting face to the rear of the machine, has been identified as a dominant noise source. A dual sprocket conveyor chain was tested as a potential solution. Sound power level measurements conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) accredited reverberation chamber showed a 3 dB reduction in the A-weighted sound power level when the dual sprocket chain was implemented. Underground results show an 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA8 hrs) reduction a 3 dB for continuous mining machine operators. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls, provides continuous mining machine operators an opportunity to be within the MSHA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

Like many experienced workers, remote control continuous miner operators perform their everyday jobs making choices and decisions that they may not consciously think about. While performing tasks, they are continuously processing feedback and cues which guide them for the next move. Initial training teaches the operators the tasks necessary to operate the equipment and perform the job. However, with experience they are better able to deal with hazardous conditions and non routine situations. To better understand what potential cues and feedback help to guide the operators, a questionnaire was developed to learn what factors affect decisions. Operator responses address issues related to specific tasks, equipment operation, visibility, lighting, and communication issues. The information collected is useful to understand what cues experienced operators use to make task performance decisions. Results will be used to develop interventions and training for safe and effective operator performance.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

"ObjectiveDevelop a portable emissions measurement apparatus to sample and measure tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (COJ, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NOJ under steady-state engine load and speed conditions during a 1-minute test.BackgroundThe U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has a comprehensive research program to develop ways to reduce exposure of miners to diesel exhaust pollutants. Engine maintenance has been shown to have important effects on such exposure.Accurate measurements of tailpipe emissions are becoming an essential part of a good maintenance program for underground mines that use diesel-powered vehicles. Past studies of particulates in U.S. underground coal mines have shown that DPM alone may be present at concentrations greater than 1 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3), half the 2-mg/m3 limit for respirable coal mine dust. A poorly tuned (smoking) diesel engine may be the sole cause for respirable dust concentrations exceeding the limit. Although there is currently no standard specifically for DPM in U.S. mines, regulatory steps are underway, and significant reductions of DPM levels in both coal and metal mines will most likely be required.Tailpipe emission measurements can provide diagnostic information to identify engine malfunctions such as clogged air cleaners, faulty injectors, or incorrect injection timing. In some cases, mine vehicle tailpipe DPM concentrations have been reduced up to 50 percent by engine maintenance and adjustments.An accurate measuring instrument would also be useful for determining the effects of exhaust control devices on tailpipe emissions. Little information is currently available about the overall effectiveness of exhaust controls after long-term use. Raw exhaust concentrations with and without the control device can be measured in underground mines, and from these data a control efficiency can be calculated. Knowledge of the effectiveness of exhaust control devices over time is needed to make intelligent decisions on bow to use and maintain these devices, and when to replace them."

A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines' chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and IT mechanisms involved in the reactions betweens sphalerite, and galena with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373K with the rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

Of all the war work by the Bureau of Mines none ultimately covered such a variety of processes and equipment, employed as many men, or called for as large an outlay as that started in con- nection with the solution of problems relating to the use of noxious gases in warfare. Beginning with an investigation to develop the best type of gas mask, the scope of the work extended until it included researches relating to a wide range of devices, such as different types of poisonous and irritating gases and smokes, smoke screens, gas shells and gas bombs, flame throwers, trench projectors for firing gas bombs, signal lights, and incendiary bombs. The Bureau of Mines in starting this work selected the necessary personnel, pro- cured the early equipment, and for some months, from the begin- ning to June 30, 1917, paid the cost of the work from its own funds. The Bureau of Mines built up a research staff of more than 700 chemists, including many of the most prominent chemists in the country, and obtained the cooperation of many of the universities and chemical companies. When the results obtained through this research were to be applied by the War Department, the Director of the Bureau of Mines cooperated in the selection of men to have charge of manufacture or further development, recommending chemiste who subsequently received commissions in the Army. The personal cooperation with the War Department was thus very close. The bureau can fairly claim that because it started this work on gas warfare and received the hearty support of the Department of War, the Navy Department, the National Research Council, and State, educational, and private institutions, the country was in July, 1918, months ahead of where it would otherwise have been in the production of gas masks and other devices. The production of toxic gases then far exceeded the supply of shells. In addition the later work in gas-mask manufacture by the Surgeon General's Office of the Army, which resulted in the development of the best mask produced anywhere; in gas manufacture and gas proving-ground tests by the Bureau of Ordnance, and in the chemical warfare pro- gram of the Navy, including the use of smoke screens, shells and toxic gases, were the direct results of the bureau's experimental work. The American charcoal and soda lime, developed through the research work, are the best used by any nation. The Bureau of Mines was instrumental in developing satisfactory methods of manu- facturing chlorpicrin, phosgene, mustard gas, brombenzylcyanide, cyanogen chloride, and other noxious substances on a large scale. The bureau also developed a smoke funnel for the Navy which no doubt saved many ships from submarine attacks, and devised smoke barrages, signal lights, incendiary darts, etc., for the Army. The Ordnance Department of the Army asked for incendiary bombs and were furnished with bombs better than any made previously. Perhaps the greatest single result of the research work has been the demonstration of the value of the services that the chemist and chemical engineer can render in time of need and the recogni- tion of chemical investigations as a necessary function of the Gov- ernment.

A computer model named the "Dynamic Component Program" (DCP) was specifically designed for predicting the dispersion off dust from haul trucks at surface mines. Validation of the DCP was completed by comparing its results with the results of the 1SC3 model and with actual dust measurements taken front two operating mine sires. Comparisons of the field measurements, predictions of the ISC3 model and the predictions of the DCP demonstrate that the results from the DCP represent, on average, an 85% improvement truer the ISC3 dust dispersion model results.

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

The experimental work on the utilization of tin-plate scrap at the North- west experiment station of the U. S. Pireau of Mines in cooperation with College of Mines, University of Washington, necessitated the selection of a simple method for the determination of tin in the iron produced. Some of the standard methods for the determination of tin which were tried are given below: 1. Dissolving in acids and precipitating the tin as sulphide, igniting and weighing as Sn02. 2. Dissolving in aciis, reducing with nickel, cooling in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, end titrating with standari iodine solution. 3. Dissolving in acids, precipitating the tin as sulphide, dissolving this sulphide in H3 and H2S04, heating until fumes of 503 are evolved, reducing with nickel or sheet lead, cooling in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, ani titrating with a standard iodine solution.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. Also, some studies did not report how many hours participants worked per week or other details about the work shifts, which complicated the assessment of their results. The many
