"Abstract—Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modelled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiological saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 3TC and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defence system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modelled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica haemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin haemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate that most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in the same time; that which is. results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.INTRODUCTIONERYTHROCYTE HAEMOLYSIS and pulmonary macrophage enzyme release assays show quantitatively comparable high cytotoxicities for both silica quartz and kaolin respirable sized dusts (BROWN, et al., 1980; DANIEL and LE BOUFFANT, 1980.) This contrasts with the strong potential for respirable quartz dust to induce pulmonary fibrosis and the much more limited potential of kaolin dust to do the same (MORGAN and SEATON, 1975).In an attempt to understand this anomalous situation, assays were performed on quartz and kaolin dusts incubated with dipalmitoyl lecithin emulsified in physiological saline, to simulate the initial contact of a respired dust with the pulmonary alveolar hypophase. The ability of kaolin dust to adsorb dipalmitoyl lecithin from physiological saline has been quantified (WALLACE, et al., 1975). Such lecithin treatment suppresses the cytotoxicity of both silica and kaolin to background levels (WALLACE, et a1.,1984).Surfactant coated detoxified dusts should then be phagocytised by pulmonary macrophages, incorporated into a macrophage secondary lysosome and exposed to hydrolytic lysosomal enzymes. Among these is phospholipase A2, which hydrolyses diacyl lecithin to lysolecithin. This was modelled by incubating lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase A2 in vitro to determine if the enzyme can digest the dust-adsorbed lecithin, and if the retoxification differs between the two dusts in a manner which might distinguish their pathogenicity."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted benchmarking surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify dust generation from major sources and determine the relative effectiveness of the different control technologies. Results from the underground dust surveys will be presented as an update on longwall dust control technology and operating practices.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem—a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile—was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, a comprehensive international database of 131 case histories has been compiled. The cases include six failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and seven even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. The case studies suggest two types of room failure mechanism. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender or remnant longwall panel narrows. The second is an overburden weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rockwell above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used. Weighting failures were not greatly affected by the density of roof reinforcement. In one of the overburden weighting cases, in a Pittsburgh coal bed mine, stress cell, convergence, bolt load and extensometer data have been used to analyze the failure in detail. This Bureau of Mines publication describes the hardware system and software package for the semiautomatic acquisition and automatic processing of high-resolution mass spectrographic plates. The semiautomatic data acquisition allows a tenfold saving of time compared with manual data acquisition. Automatic processing of the high-resolution data to yield exact masses, intensity, and the corresponding empirical formulas is accomplished by efficient programming on a small, inexpensive, programmable calculator system.

The theoretical relationships that are used to calculate in situ rock stress magnitudes and directions from borehole deformation data obtained during overcoring are based on the assumption that the rock is a linearly elastic material. Strictly speaking, this assumption is not valid in any rock. Thus, investigators using overcoring techniques must either accept various degrees of nonlinearity and the associated inaccuracies or use core testing techniques that address the problem and compensate for elastic nonlinearity. Previously developed test procedures for stress-relief overcores partially correct for nonlinearity. This Bureau of Mines paper describes a test procedure that completely corrects for elastic nonlinearity in stress-relief overcores.

The Bureau of Hines conducted a bench-scale investigation of a concentrated H2S04 reaction for recovering and separating rare-earth elements, barium, and strontium from a bastnasite ore and byproduct. Barium and strontium were dissolved in the concentrated acid and precipitated as a mixed product by water dilution. Separation of strontium from barium was effected by reaction with Na2C03 solution, followed by a dilute acid leach of the SrC03 formed. After removing the barium and strontium from bastnäsite are, the rare-earth elements were roasted to water-soluble sulfates. The rare-earth sulfate solution was subsequently processed by solvent extraction to produce rare-earth oxides low in lead and magnesium.

2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation. The Bureau of Mines investigated (1) the effect of torsion on yield and ultimate strengths of bolts when the torsion is applied first and tensile load is applied independently of torsion and (2) various methods of increasing the tension-torque ratio and/or narrowing the data spread of the tension-torque relationship. A special torsional attachment was fabricated to attach to a universal testing machine to independently subject rock bolts to combined tensile and torsional loads. It was found that initially installed torsion is nullified during tensile loading and the tensile yield and ultimate strengths are not significantly reduced. Lubricating various components of a bolt assembly or using hardened washers will improve the tension-torque relationship during conventional installation; however, the torsional load is not nullified during this type of loading. Hence, a bolt is subjected to a combined stress throughout the loading cycle; the yield point will thus be lowered compared with the pure tensile yield if care is not taken during installation to stay below the torsional yield.

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

"Natural gas-gasoline is made by collecting in the liquid state the condensable hydrocarbon vapors that exist in different natural gases in varying amounts. In the richer type of natural gas the gasoline is generally recovered by compression and cooling. If exceedingly high pressure or low temperature is used, there is dissolved in the gasoline a large amount of very volatile material, which evaporates rapidly at atmospheric temperature and pressure.In the leaner type of natural gas, the gasoline vapors are selectively absorbed from the permanent gases by passing the natural gas through an absorbing oil. The gasoline is recovered by distilling the saturated oil, and as compared with ""compression"" gasoline is of high Baume' gravity and low vapor pressure. Before a volatile gasoline can be transported in tank cars, it is necessary to decrease its volatility in order to lessen the risk of fire or explosion, as well as to prevent excessive evaporation in transit. This can be accomplished either by weathering the gasoline, or by blending it with a more stable material, naphtha being commonly used in the weathering process the more volatile portions of the gasoline are allowed to evaporate and the losses in volume are very large, therefore, blending is preferable, wherever possible.It is very difficult, however, to produce by blending, in gasoline plants, a motor fuel which is equal to straight-run refinery gasoline. In order to make a blended motor fuel of a grade equal to straight-run gasoline, only a small percentage of natural gas-gasoline can be blended with the naphtha, consequently it is customary to blend the gasoline with only enough naphtha to enable It to be shipped to an oil refinery when the material is again blended to form a finished motor fuel."

The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to selectively extract and recover chromic oxide (Cr203) from waste high-temperature shift catalysts that contain approximately 6 pct Cr and 62 pct Fe, both in oxide form. The Bureau's procedure consists of roasting the waste catalyst with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na2C03) followed by water leaching. The chromium from the leach liquor was recovered utilizing an oxidation-reduction reaction with pH adjustment to form a hydrous chromic oxide (Crp3oXHp) precipitate. The roast-leach procedure produced chromium extractions greater than 89.7 pct, with product recovery in excess of 99 pct from the leach liquor. The costs of the NaOH and Na2C03 roast processes, including sizing and equipment-related recommendations, were determined by the Bureau's Office of Process Evaluation. The economic evaluation indicates that producing a Crp3 product, at the present time, is not competitive with the present-day cost of imported chromites. The estimated average operating cost for both processes was $5.44/1b of recovered Cr203 concentrate. However, this procedure offers a potential alternative to the disposal of this waste through landfiIl.

This publication describes further research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in beneficiating domestic manganese ores. The ores selected for treatment were typical of many manganese deposits in California and Nevada in that they have not been economical to mine because they are low grade or contaminated with siliceous minerals and are not amenable to physical concentration.3 4/ It would be desirable to develop a simple treatment method resulting in nearly complete extraction of manganese from these ores and applicable to small-scale operations. Sulfation reduction appeared to be such a method. The studies reported in this publication were directed toward sawdust or lignin-sulfonates as reducing agents. Sawdust, as waste from lumbering, and lignin-sulfonates, byproducts of woodpulp papermaking, are comparatively cheap and may be available in areas where manganese ores are found. Sugar, oils, and coal were also tried as reducing agents.

Field studies have been conducted in a large number of coal mines throughout the U.S. to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coal fields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results indicate an expected 45% probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft, a depth which exceeds 903 of the coal mines within the U.S. and a 90% probability at a depth of 500 ft, a depth which exceeds 50% of the mines.

Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. All pipelines used to transport liquid fuels over coal mines are potentially hazardous; however, this publication deals only with dangers in transporting gasoline. Since transporting gasoline by this method is an established practice, the hazards connected therewith should he recognized by coal-mine operators and pipeline companies so that every known precaution may be used to reduce and keep the hazards to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of coal-mine operators and employees, pipeline-company officials, and other interested persons to the explosion and fire hazards that arise from seepage of gasoline into underground mines. A hazard is not only presented in an individual mine when gasoline enters underground workings; but, in cases where mines are interconnected, a hazard exists in mach such mine.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. Quartz is found in many forms , the most important of which are ; As vein quartz; quartzite ; sandstone ; silica sand and gravel ; as crystals or crystalline grains , masses or aggregates in igneous rocks such as granites , dicrites and pegmatites . Commercially silica is used in many ways , but ordinary uses of sand and gravel are so well known that they will not be considered here .
