The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

This report describes how longitudinal and bending stress waves in' percussive drill rods generate noise. It is shown that in practical drills the largest noise source is the bending waves, which are mainly generated because of imperfections in the piston, chuck, and drill rod alignment. Equations are presented which enable the noise spectra generated by the bending and longitudinal waves to be precisely predicted. Means for reducing the amplitude of the bending waves are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. This report contains the results of an investigation into the feasibility of periodically measuring parameters of the insulation for a mine electrical power system in order to detect incipient faults. The variety of insulation parameters evaluated included insulation resistance, dissipation factor, power factor (vs. applied voltage), current harmonics, leakage current, infrared radiation, as well as certain circuit breaker parameters and tests. In order to augment field tests a program of accelerated life testing was also carried out. Apparent inconsistencies in data were identified as the result of environmental effects, primarily temperature and relative humidity. A series of environmental tests were conducted to develop correction factors that allow one to refer measured parameters to standard conditions. A portable data collector was develop-ed to aid in the accurate collection and analysis of laboratory and field data. The primary conclusion is that insulation deterioration can be measured and failure predicted with reasonable confidence. The secondary conclusion is that most of the tests are impractical in the field although useful in the laboratory. Infrared sensing, insulation resistance and dissipation factor are the best insulation field tests when portability is taken into account.

[The purpose of this paper is to acquaint manufacturers of various types of asbestos product's, particularly those that specialize in materials used for sound deadening, vibration damping, and filtration, with a recently invested depth deposit of paligorskite, a type of asbestos usually called mountain leather. In the past this mineral has been only a museum curiosity but it possesses characteristics that may adapt it to industrial uses. The deposit is on Lemesurier Island, near this entrance to Glacier Bay, in the northern portion of southeastern Alaska, at approximately latitude 58° 17? N., longitude 1360 05' W. The island is about 4 ½ miles in east- west length and miles in width. The property on which the deposit occurs is owned by the locator Joe Ibach, end it was brought; to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Col. George B. Norris. A Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the owner and Chris Ellingen, visited the property sand examined the open-cuts from May 7 to 10 in 1944. The purpose of the examination was to determine the approximate extent of the occurrence and to obtain samples of the material for identification end study of its utilization.]

Experimental work is report on the gasification of 90-percent through 200-mesh, strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal with oxygen and with steam in three temperature ranges, namely, 2,700° to 3,400° F., 1,600° to 2,000° F., and 230° to 250° F. Thirty-one runs have been made, during which 56,000 pounds of coal have been charged to the generator at feed rates of 200 to 450 pounds of coal per hour. The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

Geological discontinues in the coalbed, such as faults, sandstone channels, permeability facies, lithotype changes, and large scale partings in the coal seam, can cause intermittent production problems or produce unexpected amounts of water or gas from degasification boreholes. These discontinuities not only can impact methane emissions into the mine workings, especially if they hinder proper and effective degasification of the coalbed but may act as conduits for methane flow from gassy strata into advancing mine workings. The effects of these discontinuities are still under debate by mining and gas production experts. This study presents a numerical investigation using reservoir simulations of the effects of partings and permeability facies and lithotype changes on the production performances of vertical and horizontal degasification boreholes, as well as the emissions during longwall operations. In this work, the grid block was designed in a multi-layer 3-D structure which enabled spatial descriptions of the geometries and properties of the discontinuities within the coal seam. The studied coal seam discontinuities and their properties were distributed arbitrarily within the model. Production was simulated by vertical and horizontal boreholes. Degasification boreholes operated two years prior to start of the mining. The results of this numerical study show that in coal seams with major heterogeneities and discontinuties, the geometry and location of the boreholes are important for improved gas production. These considerations are also important for controlling methane and water inflow into the working environment during longwall mining.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Published optical microscopic and X- ray diffraction characteristics of the following compounds are critically evaluated and compared with Bureau of Mines data : Tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoa luminate , dodecacalcium heptaluminate , dicalcium silicate , tricalcium silicate , and sodium aluminate . A recommended set of definitive optical and X- ray diffraction characteristics is presented . These values are used to identify products of the lime soda sinter process for production of alumina . Polymorphism of gamma- , beta- , and alpha prime - dicalcium silicate is reexamined , and new data are presented on polymorphism of tricalcium silicate and sodium aluminate by high- temperature X- ray diffractometry . Polymorphism is not observed for tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoaluminate , and dodecacalcium heptaluminate . Bureau of Mines data indicating a stoichiometry of 12Ca0.7A10 for the phase 5Ca0.3A1 0₂ are discussed . A critical review of the literature concerning calcium dia luminate and sodium undecaluminate ( 8 -A10 ) is also included .

The Bureau of Mines conducted this study to provide information concerning the availability of and the demand for construction-mineral aggregates in the Baltimore, Md., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The demand is discussed with reference to the area's current consumption and estimates of the area's demand for aggregates through 1990. Estimates of aggregate supply are presented in conjunction with an examination of the geology of the area, the availability of substitutes, and the effect of transportation costs. A discussion of the constraints affecting aggregate availability precedes the conclusions and recommendations. The availability of aggregates is subject to geologic, economic, and political constraints. As of January 1974, an estimated 20,100 million tons of stone was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (188.7 million tons). An estimated 139 million tons of sand and gravel was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (84.3 million tons). Several alternative actions are available within the area to insure the adequacy of the stone supply and to increase the supply of sand and gravel: (1) The establishment of special mineral resource zones; (2) the application of sequential land use techniques; and (3) the exploration of previously undeveloped regions.

The Rex mine is one of several zinc deposits in Ozark and Howell Counties, Mo. It is the second of these deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to demonstrate reserves of sulfide ore underlying the shallow carbonate ores from which the district's major production has come. The initial investigation was made during 1945-46 on the Alice mine, Ozark County, Mo.21 The investigation reported herein was conducted during 1947. The Rex open pit is about 250 feet long, 100 feet wide, and about 25 feet deep (average). Three caved shafts are evident in the bottom of the pit, but the extent of the workings from these shafts is not known. The Bureau of Mines drilled five churn-drill holes in and around the Rex pit to test the grade and the vertical and lateral extent of the deposit. Two of the holes indicate notable zinc mineralization ranging from less than 1 to more than 10 percent metallic zinc, but largely in the oxidized condition.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/ fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies, with ten subjects in each of the following age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years and 51+ years old. Visual per­formance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test.

Continuing interest has been shown in developing processes for extracting nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic deposits of these metals and in improving existing methods. Of special concern is the nickel-recovery installation at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba, operated for the General Services Administration. The Bureau? of Mines felt that a bibliography would help familiarize personnel at various Bureau of Mines stations and General Services Administration contractors with extraction methods both in the United States and in foreign countries. When this task was under way it became apparent that to compile a complete bibliography would require considerable time, so it was decided to limit the first part to the later literature and issue it independently, thus making it available sooner. The present work supplements the first part and extends the coverage to the earliest years of nickel and cobalt metallurgy.

Auxiliary equipment was assembled around a purchased oscillograph to permit observation of the current and voltage characteristics of low-energy, capacitance-discharge sparks having durations of at least 10 mµ-sec. Circuit details of the assembled apparatus, performance characteristics of the complete system, and some preliminary data from representative self-initiated sparks are given in this report. INTRODUCTION One of the subjects of continuing research by the Federal Bureau of Mines Division of Explosives Technology is the ignition of explosive-gas mixtures by means of low-energy capacitance sparks. Quite early in these investigations it was recognized that understanding the gas-ignition phenomena would be facilitated by detailed information about the performance of the ignition source (spark) under the actual conditions of interest; however, the sparks of practical interest are nonrepetitive transient phenomena whose duration could reasonably be estimated to be in the time range of 1 mµsec. to 1 µsec. As such, the only feasible method of obtaining detailed information was and is oscillographic representation of the pertinent current and voltage transients. It was not until 1947 that a suitable, commercial, dual-channel oscillograph could be obtained as the basic instrument for these studies; the instrument specified in 1947 was delivered in 1950. Wood cribs are used extensively by the mining industry to stabilize mine openings. While the cost per crib is relatively low, their extensive use can result in annual mine costs of over $1 million. In an effort to improve the utilization of these supports and to reduce ground control hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed engineering methods to assist mine operators in wood-crib design and employment. Design and employment criteria are established based on the strength, stiffness, and stability of the crib structure in relation to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Models have been developed based on full-scale tests in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator that compute the capacity of wood cribs of various configurations and material constructions as a function of displacement of the crib structure due to roof-and-floor convergence. These models permit the comparison of the loading characteristics and costs of employment of different crib designs, and in conjunction with roof behavior models, provide a means to determine the optimum design and employment strategy.
