The Munsch National First-Aid Instructors Association had its inception during the teaching of a Federal Bureau of Mines first-aid instructors' class at McPherson, Kans., under a cooperative plan of first-aid training. Upon completion of- the course on July 1, 1938 members of the class organized the charter chapter of the association under the name of McPherson (Kans.) District Charter Chapter No. 1. On July 1, 1941, 3 years after the founding of the association, there were 15 chapters in the national council -7 in Kansas, 3 in Oklahoma, 2 in Texas, 2 in New Mexico, and 1 in Arkansas. Although the pioneer work of the association was done in the petroleum industry, the plan will be of even greater benefit to a district in which there are various types of plants, mince, and operations of the mineral and allied industries. For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investi-gation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291. Analyses Of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in this report. These samples are from 14 fields in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area."

In the period of 1942-1945, medium-grade, oxidized, lead-silver ore was mined and shipped from the Diamond district near Eureka, Nev. An encouraging tonnage of low-grade ore was developed during these operations and partly blocked-out for future mining. If the low-grade ore could be treated profitably, further development of the district would result, and production of an important strategic metal might be increased. A representative sample of Diamond district ore was obtained through the Reno office of the Mining Division for the studies described in this report. The sample consisted of lumps and fines of a highly altered siliceous rock containing much earthy red hematite and some granular black hematite. Examination with the binocular microscope showed the lead carbonate mineral, cerussite, in seams and disseminated in the hematite. No zinc or silver minerals were identified, and no sulfide minerals were present. Analyses of the ore showed:

[The accepted theory of acid formation in coal mines with the subsequent appearance of the acid in coal-mine drainage, is oxidation of iron pyrite and subsequent solution and hydrolysis of the iron sulphate formed. It has also been found that 5 gobbed sections and worked-out areas, where there is usually an abundance of iron pyrite-bearing, materials in contact with air, are the sections that make the most important contribution to the quantity of acid drainage. It would thus seem obvious that if oxygen can be kept out of contact with tae acid-forming materials in tie- sections mentioned the amount of acid in coal-mine drainage could be reduced markedly and corrosion problems with mine pumping equipment and general stream pollution mitigated thereby. Although the efficiency of the suggested remedy as been borne out by laboratory experiments6, it has appeared desirable to substantiate the laboratory work by field observations in so far as pertinent data are available. It has been difficult to learn of mines or sections of mines about to be sealed, whereby an actual comparison of the drainage before and after sealing can be made. In view of that difficulty it has been necessary to devote attention to a comparison of the character of the water from areas already sealed with that from open but otherwise comparable sections of the sane mine. Previous cork has shown that the acidity of drainage in different parts of the same mine may vary, but if it can be shown also that the water from sealed areas is with but fen exceptions less acid than the otherwise similar open sections of tae same mine, the laboratory finding will be supported in a practical gray. This report presents some of the evidence that has been obtained.]

The major health concern for uranium miners is the release of radon gas and the resultant ingrowth of the short lived daughters in the mine atmosphere. Present methods of control are the utilization of mine ventilation systems for dilution and control of ingrowth time to maintain working levels below those set by regulations. This study examined pressure cycling efforts on the radon emanation. The mechanical ventilation systems were altered to allow pressure changes throughout the mine to increase radon influx during the off shifts and thus deplete the sources of radon gas. Continuous radon working level and environmental monitors, developed by the Bureau of Mines, were employed to monitor radiation and physical parameters in the mine workings. The mine ventilation system was then varied to induce radon flows during off shifts, thus, depleting the radon sources during normal production shifts. Electro-static precipitators were also tested to determine radon daughter collection efficiencies. Both radon and radon daughter concentrations were monitored and evaluated. Major problems were found in the simple mechanical operation of cleaning these units.

The subject of haulage and heisting hazards is one that merits the attention of everyone engaged in mining. The purpose of this circular is to the importance of such hazards as are shown by Bureau of Mines accident figures, to give some examples of recent accidents and briefly analyze the immediate contributing causes, and to discuss some general means found by metal- and coal-mining companies to minimize those hazards. Haulage and hoisting accidents collectively constitute the second most common cause of accidents in and about coal mines and the third most common cause in and about metal mines. In both these types of mines falls of ground cause more accidents than haulage, and in metal mines falls of persons in raises and similar openings also exceed haulage accidents in number.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

This report summarizes the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of the mineral resources of eight roadless areas in several National Forests in Montana. The areas are amoung those that have been proposed as additions to the National Wilderness Presevation System In various sessions of the U.S. Congress. Mineral Commodities present include gold (lode and placer), silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, tungsten, rare-earth elements, fluorite, and barite. Numerous mineral deposit types occur. Past production was from gold placers and vein-type deposits. There is potential for development of large volume porphyry copper-molybdenum, disseminated gold, stratabound copper-silver, and exhalative massive-sulfide metallic deposits. A substantial increase in metal prices is needed before any known vein-type deposits will be economic.

This report presents the results of a study of gas injection in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones in fault block VB and in the Upper Terminal zone in fault block VI, Wilmington field, California. This report is based on data obtained to January 1956. Earlier studies of gas injection in other California fields have been reported .3/ The Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, have been producing oil since 1945 and the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, since 1948. Before starting the gas-injection project, the expansion of dissolved gas was the principal mechanism moving the oil to the wells. Gravity drainage and an edgewater drive also have contributed to the movement of the oil to the wells. When the gas injection was begun, the reservoir pressure and the oil production had declined appreciably. Gas injection was started in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, in May 1953 and in the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, in October 1953.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods of refining iron-contaminated zinc to marketable quality and developed a laboratory-scale process in which aluminum, added as a refining agent, reacted with the iron, forming solid Fe2Al which floated to the surface of the melt. Solids were separated by both filtration and centrifugation, using a unique type of "dipping" centrifuge devised during the work. Typical zinc recovery was 95 percent, and iron content of the metal was lowered from 0.37 to 0.02 percent.

As part of the Bureau of Mines research program on recovering alumina from domestic resources, methods for extracting iron from aluminum sulfate solutions (obtained by leaching kaolinitic clay with dilute sulfuric ,acid) were investigated. In countercurrent extraction experiments at a l-gal/hr flow rate of aluminum sulfate leach liquor, the iron concentration &apos;was decreased from 1.4 g/l to 0.01 g/l after four stages of using a primary amine extractant. The iron-loaded amine solution was regenerated in five stages using 3[N] sulfuric acid or in four stages using 6[N] sulfuric acid. The aluminum sulfate solution obtained was suitable for the preparation of alumina meeting cell-grade standards of less than 0.01 pct iron.

A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

"In metal and nonmetallic mineral mines during the 15-year period 1911 to 1925, 30.17 per cent of all fatalities and 16.57 per cent of all injuries were caused by falls of rock or ore from the back or roof or from the wail; 1.24 per cent of the fatalities and 11.05 per cent of the injuries were caused by rock or ore while loading at the working face; 6.66 per cent of the .fatalities and 2.49 per cent of the injuries resulted from men falling down 3 chute, winze, raise, or stope; and run of ore from chute or pocket caused 1.48 per cent of the fatalities and 1.93 per cent of the injuries.3 Hence, accidents due to falls of men and material caused. 39.55 per cent of the fatalities and 34.05 per cent of the injuries in these mines. Accident prevention can best be assisted by each company's preserving complete records of accidents classified according to cause and rate per thousand or 10,000 shifts. A systematic method of recording accidents and the employment of graphs or charts will be helpful to the company safety department in analyzing the cruses of accidents. The purpose of this publication is to analyze data on accidents caused by falls of men and material in metal -mines of the United States, and to suggest methods of preventing or reducing such accidents."

Because of their noncombustibility, silicate and magnesium oxycements are desirable for sealing shale in underground coal mines. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, cement samples were cured and tested (nonstandard tests) for submersion to note resistance to dissolution (breaking into parts), which is an important property for a coating. Nonappreciable dissolution during 1 week of submersion was set for passing the test. Over half of the coatings passed the test.

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare a market survey of the refractories industry in California and Nevada (referred to in subsequent paragraphs as the region), and to determine the degree of self-sufficiency and the potential capacity for anticipated growth. The report includes estimates of the total annual refractories consumption, the quantity of refractories imported into the region, the tonnage of raw materials required for their manufacture, and the resources of fire clay and high-alumina minerals in the region.

A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.
