This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods and costs prepared under the sponsorship of end in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in one of the large mines producing fluorspar in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field, located in southern Illinois and western Kentucky on the Ohio River. The occurrence of ore and the methods of wining are similar to those in other mines in the district; therefore information regarding methods and the results obtained should be of interest. Improvements in methods have been made as experience developed the need of them. The trine is situated at Rosiclare, Ill., on the Illinois Central Railroad, and shipments are also made b r barge on the Ohio River.

Recent recommendations of the Bureau of Mines regarding, rock dusting to prevent dust explosions in coal mines have been issued as Mine Safety Board Decision 32 and printed as Information Circular 7109.5/ The last paragraph on page 2 of I. C. 7109 states: After a mine or any part of a mine has been rock-dusted, samples of dust for analysis should be taken from the floor, ribs, roof, and timbers at such intervals of time as will give apple warning of need far redusting in order to maintain the required minimum percentage of incombustible in the mine dust. Details of the methods of sampling and analysis are given in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7113.

The Bureau of Mines subjected three commercial compressed-oxygen self-contained self-rescuers to a series of laboratory treatments designed to simulate various environmental conditions in underground coal mines. The environmental treatments consisted of extremes of temperature and of shock and vibration. The tests were designed to predict the ability of the self-rescuers to withstand those environmental stresses without causing a decrease in wearer protection. A critical concern was internal damage to an apparatus that would cause it to malfunction or seriously degrade its performance without any obvious external signs. The Bureau has previously tested chemical oxygen self-contained self-rescuers in a similar research program. Although the three compressed-oxygen units are not as sturdy as the chemical oxygen self-rescuers tested previously, they performed reliably after treatments on treadmill tests with human subjects and on machine tests using a breathing and metabolic simulator. Serious damage was caused by both the heat treat-ment of 71° C (venting of the 02 bottle in most cases), and in the shock treatment (breaking open of the case and dislodging of the components). When physical damage is obvious, a complete refurbishing of the damaged self-rescuer is recommended.

Of all the uses for dolomite that depend on its magnesia content, perhaps the most important is its use in basic refractories. The quantities of dolomite (including both that used as crude and that calcined before use) sold or used for refractory purposes by producers in the United States for 1920-41, inclusive, are shown in figure 1. As can be seen from the chart, the utilization of dolomite as a basic refractory is far from new; it was, in fact, the first basic refractory used extensively in open-hearth steel furnaces. After large deposits of magnesite were opened in Austria-Hungary, the use of dolomite in the open hearth declined somewhat, only to be actively revived during the World War of 1914 to 1918, when supplies from Austria were shut off. The use of dolomite as a refractory in the steel industry again declined slightly for a brief period after the Armistice, but subsequently its use has tended steadily to increase, latest statistics indicating that more dead-burned dolomite is used per ton of open-hearth steel now than during the World War of 1914 to 1918. Despite fluctuations in consumption, dolomite has continued to be by far the most widely used basic refractory material. The following table, showing the quantities of basic refractories consumed in the manufacture of steel, the principal outlet, indicates the relative importance of dolomite. The chief reason for the widespread use of dolomite as a basic refractory is its relatively low cost. Its abundance and the proximity of the deposits to the steel industry (see fig. 2) afford every incentive to enhance the desirable physical properties of dolomite refractories and to ameliorate certain of their less desirable characteristics. The present emergency, with its huge demands upon the steel industry, has lent further impetus to the work of improving dolomite refractories.

This paper describing the methods and costs of milling scheelite ore at the Silver Dike concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. In the Silver Dike mill tungsten ore which contains about 1 per cent of scheelite is treated at the maximum rate of 45 tens per 24 hours by tabling followed by magnetic separators to clean the table concentrates. Unusually high-grade concentrates are produced which average between 70 and 75 per cent of W03.

As the result of a study of an area comprising some 100 square miles in the Missouri-Kansas Zinc district known to have produced zinc Ore from horizons below the Grand Falls formation, it was concluded that these horizons could become an important future source of zinc. To test this conclusion and to ascertain the general conditions associated with these lower-horizon ore deposits, the Bureau of Mines undertook detailed drilling of localities thought to be favorable for deposition of ore in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations. Two sites in the Galena, Kans., mining camp were chosen for this purpose. Ninety churn-drill holes totaling 19,338 feet of bore were completed by the Bureau in two campaigns that extended from October 1944 to June 1946. Approximately 25 percent of the holes encountered ore and indicated three separate ore bodies containing substantial tonnages. Observations made during the course of the work revealed that certain structural conditions are common to ore deposits in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations.

Investigations for safety of electrically operated mine equipment, safety lamps, and gas detectors are made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station in accordance with published regulations termed "schedules." These schedules are revised from time to time, not only to keep in step with the progress of the industry, but also to permit much freedom of design as possible without lowering standards of safety. This report presents 900° C BM-AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of Nicholas, Randolph, and Webster Counties, W. Va. Thirty-three samples from nine coal beds in three counties were car-bonized at 900° C in the l8-inch-diameter BM-AGA retort, data from which have been correlated with industrial production. Host of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use, and their coking properties were satisfactory. Except for four of the Lower Kit-tanning samples, the ranges of constituents in the coal seams were 1.8 to 9.0 percent ash and 0.4 to 1.1 percent sulfur, values within the range of accept-ability for metallurgical coals. Coke strength indexes were normal for Appalachian coals of similar rank, and the tumbler stability indexes of the coke ranged from 35 to 57.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed personal-computer-based data acquisition, instrumentation, and mine visualization and modeling techniques to evaluate a mine accessway in a deep hard-rock mine in northern Idaho. These techniques were applied to a mine shaft in a large silver mine that has been in operation for many years. A very deep, rectangular, timber-supported shaft extending to depths exceeding 2.3 km (7,500 ft) had been deforming continuously as a result of nearby mining, resulting in operational problems. Preliminary visual observations and rock and support monitoring confirmed that severe diagonal distortion was occurring. Extensive field measurements and data analysis confirmed initial observations, provided insights into the cause of deformation, and defined a general approach to structural modeling. Computer analysis of the problem was initiated by developing a three-dimensional model of the terrain. This represented a volume of rock approximately 80 km3 (40 x 1010 ft3) and an area on the surface surrounding the mine 9 km2 (3 square miles). Based on this model, a three-dimensional, finite- element analysis was conducted to establish boundary conditions for sequentially more detailed two- and three-dimensional submodels of the shaft area. Results from the computer study are being used to develop new approaches to mine design and to provide design guidelines for deep mine accessways subject to severe rock-mass loading conditions.

The explosive-anchored rockbolt was field tested in six mines where rock conditions varied from incompetent shale or mudstone through fairly soft sand-stone to firm sandy shales. The purpose of the testing was to document, under a wide variety of conditions and in comparison to other rockbolt anchors, the quality of the anchorage produced by the explosive-anchored bolt. In addition, the length, strength, and design of the explosive charge necessary to produce positive anchorage up to the yield strength of the weakest component of the bolt were determined. A l4-inch length beaded explosive charge was found to be suitable, in general, in relatively weak strata, and the length can be reduced in more competent strata. Of the 127 explosive?-anchored bolts tested, 118 bolts produced an evaluated anchorage in excess of 17,000 pounds. Only 4 of 43 expansion-shell bolts and 4 of 14 wedge bolts produced anchorage this good. In preliminary tests, properly coupled explosive-anchored bolts did not ignite an explosive gas mixture. Some minor phases included in the investigation were as follows: (1) effect of explosive-anchored rockbolt on surrounding rock; (2) effect of time on anchored bolts based on torque tests; (3) effect of submersion in water on rockbolt anchorage; (4) pull tests to higher loads; and (5) ignition tests.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

This report analyzes the petroleum-production potential of the basal Greenbrier dolomite zone, Sycamore-Millstone field, Sherman District, Calhoun County, W. Va., through the application of certain secondary-recovery methods. The well logs obtained and the core recovered from a well in this formation permitted an evaluation of the productive capability of the reservoir, Approximately 120,000 stb of oil may be produced from a 20-acre five-spot unit at breakthrough if the property is waterflooded. At an assumed limiting producing gas-oil ratio of 20)000 sef/stb, approximately 69,000 stb of oil should be recovered by low-pressure gas drive.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. "INTRODUCTION Falls of ground cause the greatest number of accidents at underground metal mines. Statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Mines show that during a 13 - year period ended in 1943, falls of ground caused 35 percent of the fatalities and 16.8 percent of the nonfatal injuries at underground metal mines in the United States. 4/ Expressed on a basis of a million man-hours worked, the frequency rate was 0.355 for fatalities and 11.76 for nonfatal injuries. Although some progress has boon made in preventing rock-fall accidents over a 30- or 40-year period, the problem is still a major one requiring the diligent efforts of management and employees.In the Lake Superior district: where organized safety programs have been in effect for more than 30 years, the record is more favorable. Statistics compiled by the Lake Superior Mining Section of the National Safety Council reveal that over a 6-year period ended in 1945 the frequency rate of fatalities per million man-hours was 0.277, and the rate for nonfatal injuries was 2.38 from falls of ground.Although the above-given statistics do not cover equal or concurrent periods, the improvement in accident experience in the Lake Superior district over the national average, is obvious. This improvement is due to more effective methods of ground support or more rigid enforcement of the use of known methods.It is hoped that the following information about ground-support practices in the Lake Superior district will assist operators of other mines in their efforts to reduce accidents from falls of ground."

Chromite has been produced commercially for slightly more than a century. Developed, at one time, chiefly as a chemical pigment raw material, it has subsequently found extensive application in other chemical industries - as a refractory material for furnace linings and as the sole source of the metal chromium. For some years prior to 1914, its use as a refractory predominated; but post-war development in alloy steels, principally stainless steels, enhanced the metallurgical demand in the form of ferrochrome with a consequent increase in the demand for chromite. More recently direct reduction of chromite in alloy-steel manufacture has been applied to a limited extent. Alloy steels containing varying amounts of chromium, with or without other alloying elements, now find extensive use in a ride variety of ways - in structural material, machines, industrial equipment transportation by land, sea, and air, sanitary equipment, food preservation, and a multitude of other uses. "Importance pf the small stone problem.Profitable disposal of limestone too small for making lime in the shaft kiln, is one of the most urgent problems in the lime industry. Reports received by the Bureau of Mines from 31 quarries show that the proportion of small stone varies from 2 to 40 per cent, averaging 18 per cent of gross pro¬duction, Modern methods of heavy blasting, and the use of crushers in large quarries tend to increase the proportion of small stone above that produced in early days when light blasting and hand sledging were almost universally used. There is also a growing movement toward underground operation of lime deposits, a method which in general produces a greater proportion of fines than is encountered in open-pit work. Thus the small stone problem is of growing importance, and demands the attention of every progressive lime producer. As the problem is of almost universal interest, it is urgently desired that every operator who reads this report will contribute from his knowledge or experience, answers to the questions on the final sheet.There are several markets in which small stone may be sold but in these markets the competition is generally keen and the prices low. The lime producer's chief product is lime, he understands its manufacture and marketing, and brings him a greater return than can be obtained from most limestone by-products. For these reasons it is evident that the conversion of small into lime is the nest desirable means of disposal."

The Bureau of Mines estimated the methane content of a coal, which depends primarily upon rank and pressure, from the adsorption equation V kpn, where k and n are constants related to rank. By incorporating corrections for moisture, ash, and temperature, and estimating pressure and temperature as a function of depth, the methane content of coal in place can be estimated from the following equation: [ ] Values calculated with this equation generally are in reasonable agreement with direct determinations. By assuming a standard moisture and ash content, and using the hydrostatic head to estimate pressure, a graph of rank and depth versus gas content was constructed. Although estimated values were consistently high for several high-volatile bituminous coals from an area where the pressure is known to be less than hydrostatic, the estimated methane content for most coals shows reasonable agreement with values determined by the direct method.

This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.

As part of a continuing program of evaluating the Nation's crude-oil resource, this report presents information pertaining to resource, primary reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for 3,209 selected reservoirs contained in 24 oil-producing States, as of January 1, 1968. To that date the selected reservoirs had not been subjected to pressure-maintenance or secondary-recovery operations. These reservoirs also met the following parameters: (1) a minimum of five oil-producing wells on January 1, 1968, (2) a minimum of 50 acres areal extent, (3) a minimum of 50,000 bbl of oil ultimate primary recovery, and (4) the principal reservoir energy was other than active water encroachment. The selected 3,209 reservoirs produced 527 million bbl of oil in 1967, about 17 pct of U.S, total production. Primary oil reserve was 4,983 million stb; in addition, there was 6,043 million stb of potential water- flood oil reserve. Oil resource in the selected reservoirs was 59,547 million stb. A brief history and outlook of waterflooding are presented for each State. Depth and producing rate statistics and geologic distributions of production, resource, reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for the selected reservoirs are presented by States in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are description, history, and technique modifications of waterflooding, and a preliminary cost estimate of a closed-system water-injection project.
