"The Keystone and St. George properties are in the so-called Johnson Camp area and adjoin a property that in recent years has become a steady producer of low-to medium-grade copper-zinc ores. The Keystone Copper Co. was active intermittently from 1908 to 1938 and during 1926 to 1937 produced a recorded 1,100 tons of 5 percent copper ore. There is no evidence that ore has been produced from the St. George property.In the Johnson Camp area both igneous and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from pre-Cambrian to Quaternary are exposed. The ore bodies are in the Paleozoic rocks and occur principally in the Abrigo formation, which is composed mainly of limestones and shales. The rocks of the productive zones are metamorphosed and are cut by systems of fractures and faults. Chalcopyrite and sphalerite, the principal ore minerals, replace altered limestones to form deposits locally called mantos and chimneys.Investigation of the Keystone and St. George deposits by the Bureau of Mines included topographical and geological mapping of the surface and the underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface. A total of 10,067.8 feet was drilled in 22 holes. The drilling started November 13, 1947, and was completed August 19, 1948.This report records factual information obtained during the course of the investigation."

A degasification experiment was conducted in a Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed mine in Virginia. It involved (1) drilling holes in the coalbed in the out- side headings of a set of five being developed in virgin area, and (2) conducting a methane emission rate study as mining progressed and additional holes were drilled. Degasification from all drill holes except the longest in each of the outside headings and the first three drilled (excluding the in-situ pressure hole), was erratic and inconsequential in methane emission rates. The two longest holes liberated 66 and 79 cfm of methane, which is significant for the coalbed, but such quantity lasted a relatively short time; the first three were uniform but low in methane emission.

This Bureau of Mines report is an applications manual that can be used by the nonmetallic mining industry for guidance in installing noise control materials into crushing and screening plants. These noise control modifications were installed and successfully tested at three operating quarries. This report identifies the major noise sources that can be encountered in crushing and screening plants, and discusses the applicable noise control materials and techniques that a plant operator can utilize on a retrofit basis to reduce equipment noise.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). This Bureau of Mines investigation was made to determine the possibilities of using Florida beach-sand concentrator wastes in ceramic products. Sands used in the investigation originated in the Trail Ridge area of Florida, where continued operation of processing plants for recovering titanium minerals promises a dependable source of raw materials. Three general classes of ceramic products were studied, namely: (1) Structural, (2) refractory, and (3) electric-furnace slags.

Oil-yield results are presented for 65 oil-shale sections in Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado, sampled during the period 1957 through 1963. Including previously published data, oil-yield results for 203 sampled sections have now been released by the Bureau of Mines to aid in appraising the shale oil potential of the basin. Oil yields of core samples (135 sets) were regarded as reliable bases for appraising the Mahogany-zone interval, but only 5 sets of cores sampled the deeper, lower-zone oil shales. Drill cuttings (68 sets) sampled the lower-zone oil shales, but their oil yields are principally indicative and should be confirmed by analyses of cores. More complete core sampling of the lower-zone oil shales is needed.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. The compressibility factors, Z, of helium, nitrogen, and helium-nitrogen mixtures in the three-dimensional space of temperature, pressure, and gas composition have been related to the Leiden form of the virial equation of state. The dependency of virial coefficients through the fifth on temperature and gas composition has been established for the temperature range 133.15° to 748.15° K. Compressibility factors, Z, have been computed from the equation of state and tabulated as functions of gas composition, pressure, and temperature. Tabular values of Z are presented for 30.00 through 100.00 percent helium for temperatures from 240° through 700° R for pressures from 14.696 through 3,050 psia and for temperatures from 720° through 1,300° R for pressures from 14.696 through 1,500 psia. Tabular values of Z are presented at increments of 5.00 percent helium and 20° R, and, for pressures greater than 50 psia, at increments of 50 psi.

The objectives of this study were the evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of utilizing color and color infrared aerial photography to satisfy some informational needs for pre-mine planning, mine progress monitoring, and reclamation monitoring. Seven aerial data collection missions were conducted within a two year period over strip mine sites in Pennsylvania. Scales of 1:6,000; 1:12,000; 1:24,000; and 1:48,000 were flown on the first aerial mission. The 1:12,000 was chosen as the optimal scale for the remaining six flights. An extensive literature and legislative review and discussions with strip mine operators identified the informational parameters that could possibly be obtained from aerial photography. Interpretability accuracies were evaluated for parameters in the broad categories of land use, soils, water, vegetation, and geology. Seasonal interpretation characteristics were noted for infrared photography. Man hours for photointerpretation and costs of aerial data collection were monitored closely and incorporated into a cost benefit analysis. Those parameters that could be mapped, identified, or measured with accuracies =75 percent were incorporated into a photointerpretation training manual. An additional analysis was performed to determine the applicability of the interpretation methodologies and results developed for Eastern sites to Western surface coal mining sites. In addition, a separate aerial photographic interpretation manual was produced during this contract. It is intended to be utilized by eastern and midwestern surface mine operators and regulatory personnel.

The analyses herein were made by mass spectrometer and Frost helium apparatus. The most important helium resource discovery made during 1961 was the Table Mesa field in San Juan County, N. Mex. This field, Which has an estimated recoverable helium reserve of 850 million cubic feet, is now supplying gas containing approximately 5.4 percent helium to the Bureau of Mines Navajo Helium Plant at Shiprock, N. Mex.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The operations of the Quartz Hill Mining Co., near Dewey, Mont., afford an interesting example of the cost of mining small bodies of direct shipping ore; they also illustrate the effect of the unavoidable periods of unusually high exploration and development costs in this type of mining upon the cost per ton of producing ore. The importance of skilled geological guidance and the necessity of avoiding unnecessary overhead and capital expense at small mines are shown. Operating conditions at Quartz Hill are typical of those in many other mining districts of southwestern Montana. It is believed that the costs presented here may be of value in the preliminary estimation of costs to be expected by conservative operators under similar conditions elsewhere. The information contained in this paper was obtained during a visit to the Quartz Hill mine in August 1936.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The tactual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the twelfth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate halt-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that halt township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. The mine has, been idle since 1946

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines demonstrated that nonionic surfactants increased the leaching rate of copper in the flask leaching of chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate if sufficient ferric sulfate was present. This research was continued by the Bureau in Part 2 to further explore the application of nonionic surfactants to the dump leaching of chalcopyrite. A polyoxyethylene lauryl ether was selected as the superior nonionic surfactant tested at 25° and 50° C. The addition of the surfactant increased copper leaching by 116 pct at 25° C and 1.0 pct solids and by 61 pct at 50° C and 0.5 pct solids at Fe 3+ concentrations greater than 1 g/L. At 0.1.0 g/L Fe 3+ and below, the addition of the surfactant produced as much as a 35 pct decrease in leaching. Each of the nonionic surfactants studied was found to be heavily adsorbed by a typical chalcopyrite ore, which poses a serious barrier to the application of nonionic surfactants in an actual chalcopyrite dump.

When a fire or explosion occurs in an underground coal mine, the atmosphere guickly becomes irrespirable. Highly irritant smoke and toxic levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide are produced, and consumption of oxygen by the fire or blast can reduce its concentration below that needed to support life. Work parties entering such a hazardous atmosphere for rescue or recovery operations are required to use, as their primary respiratory protection, a fully self-contained breathing apparatus of at least two hours duration. Apparatus used in this role has primarily been of the closed circuit rebreather type, using pressurized oxygen storage and chemical removal of expired carbon dioxide. Typically, commercial self-contained breathing devices for mine rescue have been heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable to use. The McCaa apparatus, long the industry standard, represented the best art available when it was First designed in 1926. It weighs 41 Ibs., protrudes about six inches above shoulder height, and provides breathing gas at temperatures up to 120° F. More recent designs, such as the Drager BG174A and Scott Rescue-Pak, using modern light weight materials and fabrication techniques have improved on all parameters of the McCaa to some extent. It was the intent of the Bureau of Mines, acting under the authority of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, to fund the development of a new self-contained breathing apparatus which would incorporate the best available technology and serve as a benchmark for future commercial designs, as the Bureau-sponsored McCaa had 45 years previously.

It is generally recognized that if the lose and contamination of the fluid content of a core specimen from an oil- and gas-bearing formation in a well were eliminated, the value of core analysis would be increased greatly. In an effort to obtain uncontaminated cores, extensive field tests were carried out in the Mercy field, San Jacinto County, Tex., with the Carter pressure core barrel and an oil-base drilling fluid having very low rates of filtration as measured by the standard A.P.I. drilling-fluid filter teat. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid filter test. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid to provide a means for quantitatively measuring the volume of oil filtrate in the cores. Unfortunately, as stated in the report on the Mercy tests, very little oil nand was penetrated in coring the well; and because the performance of the pressure core barrel was not entirely satisfactory, the tests did not provide a complete answer to the question: Does a filtrate from an oil-base drilling fluid enter cores., and how does it affect the results of the core analyses?

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1951, while the total crude-oil charging capacity continued to increase. There were 350 refineries as of January 1, 1952, compared with 357 a year earlier, according to the annual Bureau of Mines capacity survey. A gain of 369,241 barrels in daily refinery crude through-put capacity during 1951 brings the total to 7,332,885 barrels daily. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil was 20,951 barrels daily, an increase of 1,445 barrels daily over the previous year. Capacity added in the Texas Gulf district accounted for 36 percent of the total increase; the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 23 percent; the East Coast district, 19 percent; the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 12 percent; and the Texas Inland district, 11 percent. The California district was the only one reporting a decline in crude-oil refining capacity, the total being 14,200 barrels daily below the previous year. Reported as under construction January 1, 1952, was an additional crude-oil capacity of 282,680 barrels daily, an increase of 77 percent over the January 1, 1951, total of 160,100 barrels. The capacity now building is for the expansion of existing facilities, since no new plants had been begun as of the first of the year. Three or four companies have plans to build refineries in the Williston Basin area of North Dakota, but no definite locations or dates when construction will begin have been announced.
