The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 largely to determine methods of preventing coal-mine explosions; the Bureau's studies have proved that coal dust, except possibly that of some grates of anthracite, can initiate an explosion in the absence of gas and that its ability to extend or propagate an explosion of either gas or dust has been responsible for nearly all of the widespread explosions that have taken place in bituminous and other nonanthracite mines in the United States in the present century. It is believed by many persons that all atmospheric dusts may be harmful if breathed in large enough quantities for long enough time; bituminous coal dust is generally considered to be essentially harmless physiologically, yet there is abundant evidence of definite damage from inhalation of bituminous dust mixed or unmixed with the dust of other materials. Attention un¬questionably should be given to allaying dust in bituminous mines, especially at principal dust-producing sources. This publication enumerates some of the sources of dust and describes practical methods of employing water as one of the most effective of the known methods to allay dust in bituminous mines.

A diesel particulate matter analyzer capable of direct, real-time measurement of engine exhaust particulate is necessary to effectively institute source control technology currently being used on diesel equipment and to ensure that the control measures are working. To investigate the potential of a differential pressure monitor to measure diesel particulate matter in undiluted exhaust, samples were collected from three different diesel engines-Kubota, Isuzu, and Deutz-running under 12 different RPM and load scenarios. These measurements were compared to elemental carbon concentrations in the sampled exhaust as determined by using the NIOSH 5040 analytical method. Elemental carbon is used as a surrogate measurement for diesel particulate matter. The results of the two data sets were then compared using a linear regression analysis. The coefficient of determination (or R2) was calculated to be 0.98, 0.94, and 0.74 for the Kubota, Deutz, and Isuzu engines, respectively. R2 values of this magnitude indicate that this method can be successful in estimating elemental carbon emissions in the engines tested. In addition, for replicate samples, the coefficient of variation ranged from 7.1% to 10.2% with an average of 8.5%. These data indicate that this method could prove useful to mechanics as they work to maintain engines and DPM control technologies.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

"INTRODUCTION The Gibellini manganese—zinc-nickel deposits, are in southeastern Eureka County, Nev, T. 15 N., R. 53 E. M.D.B.M. 27.5 miles south of Eureka, the county seat.The partly explored deposits, locally known as the Black Iron or Gibellini property, were examined in May 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, who recommended that the deposits be explored further by means of core drilling. The proposed program called for drilling six diamond—drill holes, or eight if necessary, and for trenching at two places — 200 feet northeast and 280 feet west of the shaft on the main deposit.In 1946 the project was set up, and In July, of that year diamond drilling as started. Six holes were drilled for a total length of 1,198.5 feet. No trenching or other exploratory work as done. Work on the project was stooped. October 30, 1946.OWNERSHIPAccording to county records, the property comprises a group of 13 unpatented lode claims, and ownership is divided among Louis P. Gibellini,Louis P. Gibellini and wife (both of Eureka, Nev.), and the International Smelting & Refining Co., of Salt Lake City, Utah. Five claims of the group - the Black Iron No. 1, Black Hill No. 2, Manganese No. 3, Flat No. 1, and Flat No. 2 - are owned by Gibellini. Three claims - the Black Hill No. 1, Black Iron No. 3, and Manganese No. 4 are owned jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Gibellini, and the International Smelting & Refining Co. owns the remaining five - the Black Iron No. 4 and No. 5, and Black Hill Nos. 4, 7, and. 9."

The magnetic susceptibility, the geographical source, and associated minerals are given for 44 copper-, 26 lead-, and 19 zinc-bearing minerals. Of the 44 copper minerals/ all had a susceptibility of less than 15 X 10-6 cgs, and about 20 percent of them were diamagnetic. Of the 26 lead minerals, all had a susceptibility of less than 11 X 10-5 cgs, and almost half of them were diamagnetic. And, of the 19 zinc minerals, all except four had a susceptibility of less than 9 X 10-6 cgs, and about one-fourth of them were diamagnetic.

Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

A survey of in-situ methods for determining bulk electric properties of coal is given. Largely because of the strong dependence of coals properties on operating frequency, different sensing methods have to be adopted for different applications. Evaluation of both established and feasible methods is made in this report from the viewpoint of physical set-up, probing depth, and the type of inversion involved.

Diamond, drilling of some blast holes in stoning operations is practised in at least two iron mines in the Lake Superior district - the Soudan mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co., on the Vermilion range at Soudan, Minn., and the Anvil-Palms mine, operated by Pickands, Bather & Co., on the Gogebic range at Bessemer, Mich. Diamond drilling, at the Soudan nine has partly replaced percussion drilling because of the extreme hardness of the ore and of the lean formation. According to Wolff,4/ the jasper or lean formation in this mine is the hardest rock regularly drilled in any commercial operation.

Tennessee is the largest federal program state in the nation, with 62 active surface and underground coal mines. Tennessee's coal resources lie in 22 coal seams in 22 counties. Twelve seams are being mined at this time. Mining in the northern counties is primarily in steep slope areas in the Cumberland Mountains. The relatively flat terrain associated with the Cumberland Plateau makes area-rnining the most common production method in Tennessee's southern counties. The State of Tennessee gained primacy August 10,1982, when its regulatory program was conditionally approved, subject to the correction of certain deficiencies. On May 16,1984, the Tennessee General Assembly repealed most of the Tennessee Coal Surface Mining Law of 1980, effective October 1, 1984. With this action, withdrawal of the state regulatory program was formalized, and on October 1,1984, the Office of Surface Mining's Knoxville Field Office became the regulatory authority. Tennessee is not eligible to receive funds for an abandoned mine reclamation program because it does not have an approved regulatory program. Accordingly, the Tennessee Abandoned Mine Lands Program does not receive federal AML grants. Since 1984, AML projects have been completed under cooperative agreements between OSM and the state; emergency projects are completed by the Office of Surface Mining.

The objective of this project was to collect information applicable to the design of ground support systems in deep mines to include in-situ rock deformations, deformation-modulus, stresses, and geology and laboratory physical properties. All data collected was to be integrated and evaluated using a finite-elements computer code. In addition, considerable professional "cross pollenization" was anticipated from the association of University and SMRC personnel. Scope of Investigation Before a ground supporting system can be evaluated, the loading conditions existing in the region of investigation, strength, deformation characteristics, as well as other engineering properties of the rock structure immediately surrounding the openings, together with the pertinent geological information, must be obtained and analyzed. It was for this reason the following items were included in this research project: (1) The selection of a suitable area for the investigation. (2) The mapping of the important geological features of the area of investigation. (3) The measurement of in-situ deformation of rock masses immediately surrounding an underground opening of the area of investigation. (4) The determination of ground stresses. The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

This Bureau of Mines report presents three methods for designing bulkheads to impound water underground: (1) thin and thick plate design; (2) South African plug design; and (3) single and double bulkhead seal design. Related areas critical to the long-term effectiveness of underground water impoundments are also addressed. These include bulk-head anchorage, concrete specifications and placement, the grouting of permeable strata, and the sizing of barrier pillars. A case study involving hydrostatic tests conducted on a single bulkhead seal constructed in the Safety Research Coal Mine of the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center is presented in an appendix.

Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. The following paper discusses the mining, transportation, and crushing methods, with costs, at the San Andreas plant of the Calaveras Cement Co. It is one of a series, prepared for and published by the U. S. Bureau of Mine describing methods used in cement-rock quarries throughout the country. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total cost. It is recognized that publication of total costs mightin some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a hole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost-tabulations shall ensue.

The U.S Bureau of Mines conducted a five-year mineral resource assessment of the 16.6 million acre Colville Mining District in northern Alaska, which includes part of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The study was initiated at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, which administers the majority of the region. The study was done in cooperation with the Alaskan Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the University of Alaska. During fieldwork, 1593 rock, soil, and stream sediment samples were collected and four bulk samples taken for beneficiation studies. A total of 40 mineral occurrences were documented, including 27 which were previously undescribed. No mining has occurred within the district. Mississippian carbonaceous shale and siliceous mudstone contain stratiform exhalative lead-zinc-silver occurrences. Grades average 8.0% combined lead/zinc and 51 gm/mt silver. Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian sandstones host breccia veins, containing up to 29% combined lead/zinc and 274 gm/mt silver. Mineralized quartzites of similar age have potential for disseminated-type lead-zinc deposits. Samples from Lower Cretaceous mudstone and shale beds up to 6.5 meters thick, contain as much up to 12% manganese. Upper Mississippian carbonaceous shale and limestone beds contain up to 23% phosphate. Stratiform barite deposits hosted by cherts, are up to 27 meters thick with an average specific gravity of 4.16. Vein-type fluorite occurrences are associated with Mississippian limestone. Moderate potential exists for development of zinc -lead-silver, barite, and phosphate deposits.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the potential availability of magnesium from 45 properties in market economy countries (MEC's). The 38 significant deposits evaluated have demonstrated resources of approximately 29 billion short tons (st) magnesium-bearing material containing 416 million short tons (MMst) magnesium oxide (MgO). Using data it gathered, the Bureau determined the magnesium production potential for each property including a 15-pct rate of return on invested capital. Total and annual availability assessments for the next 30 yr were completed for magnesium (Mg) metal, deadburned MgO, and caustic calcined MgO. At a January 1984 market price of $1.34/Ib Mg metal, the properties evaluated could economically produce an estimated 13 MMst Mg metal. At a market price of $400/st nonmetal magnesium product, these properties could economically produce 109 MMst deadburned MgO and 43 MMst caustic MgO. These properties could produce approximately 301,000 st Mg metal, 3.0 MMst deadburned MgO, and 430,000 st caustic MgO annually at current full production levels and 1984 market prices until at least the year 2000. Total 1984 MEC production assessed in this study was 153,000 st Mg metal and 4.3 MMst nonmetallic MgO products.
