Venting on ultraslow spreading ridges is far more abundant then previously predicted, and the discrepancy between observed and predicted vent field density may imply that non-magmatic heat sources are common along these ridges (Baker and German, 2004; Escartin et al., 2008; Rona et al., 2010; German et al., 2016). In this study we have estimated the flux from two hydrothermal vent sites situated on the slow to ultraslow spreading Mohns Ridge at the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system (AMOR). The flux estimates have been made using the primordial isotope 3He in the non-buoyant plume above the Loki’s Castle vent field at the northern termination of the Mohns Ridge, and from the Jan Mayen vent fields area situated close to the southern termination of the ridge. Primordial 3He enters the oceans through degassing and mixing with hydrothermal fluids eventually to be discharged at the ocean floor primarily at hydrothermal vent sites and submarine volcanic eruptions (e.g. Clarke et al., 1969; Lupton and Craig, 1981; Lupton, 1998). Once introduced into the water column the concentration will only decrease by dilution due to its conservative behavior in the water column. Water column samples were collected using a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) probe (911plus Seabird) with a Niskin water bottle rosette. The water column above the Jan Mayen vent fields (JMVF) was sampled in the years 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (82 samples) and the water column above the Loki’s Castle vent field was sampled in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 (116 samples).

The age of mineralization, its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit, its capacity for sustainable extraction and, ultimately, its grade and tonnage, are key aspects in the economic viability of volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits (Ditchburn et al, 2004). Radiometric dating methods applied at GNS Science have been recently refined with the purpose of efficiently determining the ages of seafloor VMS mineralization along active intraoceanic arcs. These developments include: determining the longevity of seafloor hydrothermal systems, details of individual chimney and massive sulfide mound growth, and insights into deep-seated processes, such as the transfer of elements from magmas to their overlying hydrothermal systems. In our pursuit to better understand seafloor hydrothermal systems along intraoceanic arcs, we have thus far compiled age information for three volcanic centres of the Kermadec arc (South Pacific) and one of the Mariana arc (NW Pacific).

"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."

The Kyzyl-Tashtyg massive sulfide polymetallic deposit is situated 120 km north-east of Kyzyl (the capital of Tuva Republic, Russia). It is located in the Ulug-O volcanic zone which is interpreted as the northern segment of the Kaa-Khem rift in Sayano-Tuva marginal sea, one of the Paleoasian Ocean margin (Fig. 1) [Zaykov, 2006]. Since its discovery in 1946 the deposit has been studied by many researchers. Significant information was published by Kuzebny et al. [2001] and Zaykov [2006] who proposed volcanogenic-sedimentary genesis. A single reference in English about Kyzyl-Tashtyg is available [Herrington et al., 1999].

Marine scientists at the University of Georgia, have in the past few years, designed, developed and refined two geochemical survelliance systems for the exploration of hard mineral resources on the seafloor. The one first developed is an underwater sled which contains a nuclear radiation detector for measuring naturally occurring gamma radiation that is associated either with marine phosphorites containing uranium and its decay daughters or thorium decay products that are indicative of monzanite. The latter can, in most instances, be used as a pathfinder mineral for placer deposits that may contain other heavy minerals of interest such as rutile, ilmenite, chromite, gold, etc. This sled is operational in continental shelf depths. The second system is capable of more definitive measurements in the form of direct elemental analyses of the silt and clay fractions within the surficial sediments. It consists of a towed sled containing a submersible pump which, upon agitating the sediments, transfers the finer fraction up a hose to a shipboard centrifugal cone then to an automated sample processor. The resultant samples are rendered into sediment wafers, suitable for non-destructive XRF analysis. The system is capable of shipboard analysis for specific elements within minutes after sampling, allowing a cursory look upon which an exploration grid can be formulated while on site. A much wider spectrum of up to 40 elements can be evaluated when the wafers are returned to the land based laboratory.

Subsea mining system are designed for the following, principally different, tasks: Dreding - The destruction and removal of seabed sediments overlaying the bedrock. Cleaning - The competence of the system to systematically remove the deposits from an undulating hard bedrock with irregular pulleys, channels and fissures. Factors that influence the choice of dredging equipment for a specific project are project requirements such as environmental conditions, location and water depth. However, the most important selection criteria are soil conditions. As a consequence, possible dredging systems, must be evaluated for the following, principally different, characteristics: Dredging proficiency - The destruction of the strata by the equipment. System stability - The capability of the soil to support the subsea equipment The above parameters are determined by the strength characteristics and the bearing capacitv_ of the soil. The author describes the processes involved in excavating the subsea deposits and (transporting the gathered soil as a water-soil mixture to the surface using different excavation and transport methods.

Recent investigations located at least six major massive sulfide deposits (dimensions measured in tens to hundreds of meters) within a 50-km-long segment of Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of southern Gorda Ridge. The sediment fill is intercalated silt and sand turbidites and hemipelagic mud with a maximum thickness of 500 m. Several volcanic edifices, spaced at approximately 15-km intervals along the ridge axis, penetrate and locally breach the sediment. The largest sulfide deposits form mounds and ridges on the steep flanks of structurally unstable sediment-capped blocks that have been uplifted above the volcanic edifices; both sediment and sulfide deposits are undergoing rapid erosion and redeposition. Although hydrothermal activity appears to be absent at most sulfide fields, 220°C fluids are discharging from the tops of sulfide mounds near 41°00'N lat, 127°31'W long. Recent pillow lavas and sheetflows erupted onto the sediment-covered sea floor less than 500 m away from the active vent field. The massive sulfide deposits have compositional characteristics that differ from deposits formed on sediment-free spreading axes. The Escanaba Trough deposits include Fe- and Cu-rich, Zn- and Pb-poor massive sulfide mounds, polymetal (Zn-Fe-Pb-Cu-As-Ag-Sb-Sn) sulfide vent structures, abundant barite-rich chimneys, crusts, and sinter cones, and thermogenic petroleum in the sulfide and sediment. East Diamante is a submarine volcano in the southern Mariana arc that is a complex caldera about 10 km x 5 km (elongated ENE-WSW), and breached on its northern and southwestern sectors. A large field of barite-sulfide mounds was discovered in June 2009 and revisited in July 2010 aboard the R.V. Natsushima using the Hyper-dolphin ROV. The mound field occurs on the NE flank of a cluster of resurgent domes inside the caldera. The mound field extends for more than 100 m long and is about 30 m wide, and is aligned along a NE-SW rift valley. A sample of dacite yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 20,000±400 years. Individual mounds are typically 1-3 m tall and 0.5-2 m wide, with lengths from about 3 to more than 5 m. The mounds are composed of barite-dominant layers interbedded with Zn-sulfide-rich barite layers. Rare inactive spires and chimneys cap some mounds. Fe and Mn oxides are currently forming small (<1 m diameter, ~0.5 m tall) subsidiary mounds on the top of some of the sulfate/sulfide mounds and drape the flanks of others. Both diffuse- and focused-flow fluids emanate from the subsidiary oxide mounds. Ages of the basal sulfate/sulfide mounds cluster around 4,000 years old based on 226Ba/Ba, whereas the oxides are less than 5 years old based on 228Th/228Ra. Most mound and chimney samples are dominated by barite and amorphous silica; sulfides occur in variable amounts that in decreasing order of abundance include sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Anglesite, cerrusite, and a Pb phosphate occur as late-stage interstitial phases. Some mound samples have fragmental textures; layered clasts composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite may have been derived from collapsed chimneys. Despite the abundance of barite, samples contain high concentrations of Zn (to 23 Wt.%), Pb (to 13 wt.%), Ag (to 500 ppm), and Au (to 15 ppm). Copper is enriched in a few mounds samples, up to 3 wt.%, but is typically <1 wt.%. Other significant metal enrichments include Sb (to 1320 ppm), Cd (to 1180 ppm), and Hg (to 55 ppm).

In October 2004 Placer Dome entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Nautilus Minerals, to explore for Submarine Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits on Nautilus? PNG exploration tenements. Placer/Nautilus currently holds approximately 15,000 km2 of tenements in PNG waters, either granted or under application, covering all reported seafloor hydrothermal vent occurrences.

"These 40 years, deep-sea mining for manganese nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulfides has been continuously business and R&D targets. The economy is the most important factor for realizing the venture. Some technological options to increase the economy of deep-sea mining are introduced. They are a mechanical lift, waste rejections on seafloor, a substrate recovery as byproduct, and a pulp lift. An example application of one of the options is economically examined. Not only the same type examinations but also some technological clarifications of the options in detail are necessary.BACKGROUNDManganese nodules (nodule), seafloor massive sulfides (SMS), and cobalt-rich manganese crusts (crust) have been well recognized as future metal sources these 40 years. Among them, the nodule was the first recognized ones. The mining technologies for the deep-sea mineral resources, therefore, have been mainly developed in the major R&D projects for the nodule.The mining systems considered were shuttle miner, continuous line bucket (CLB), and hydraulic dredge ones. The shuttle miner system studied by France was a kind of basic study for autonomous underwater vehicle. The CLB system was an effective approach for a small scale and less investment cost mining (Masuda and Cruickshank, 1995). However, both were considered not effective for a bulk scale production rate mining such as 1.5 million tons per year in dry weight. In the hydraulic dredge system, a steel-pipe and flexible-hose conduit for nodule transportation named “pipestring” and a hydraulic pumpup instrument for creation of upward water flow in the pipestring named “pump-lift” or “air-lift” were adapted and developed. Hence, the hydraulic dredge system became the main stream in the mining system."

Research on marine gas hydrate and the methane cycle has a tradition at IFM-GEOMAR. In summer 1996 during a cruise with RV SONNE offshore Oregon (USA) scientists of the former GEOMAR recovered the largest amount of gas hydrate from the seafloor. This discovery stimulated research on marine gas hydrates in Germany and induced funding of scientific programs such as LOTUS and OMEGA with numerous innovative technologies within the special program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN of BMBF and DFG. The primary objectives of ongoing and future research are to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of: • gas hydrate distribution and quantity; • variation and regulation of gas hydrate formation and dissociation as well as of the related fluid flow; • functioning of chemosynthetic communities in methane oxidation, carbonate precipitation and methanotrophy as biological barrier against methane emission and • delineating the escape routes of methane to the hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Approximately a century lapsed between the time nodules were discovered and the beginning of commercial exploration in the early 1960&apos;s. A period of rapid development of exploration and mining technology ensued over most of the next two decades. In recent years advancement has been sharply curtailed. This paper discusses the constraints inhibiting nodule mining and some developments that could aid in overcoming certain difficulties. Specifically, the greatest single constraint is economic. With few exceptions mineral markets are badly depressed. Present projections for development of nodules are for the late 1990&apos;s or beyond. However, the U.S. awarded exploration licenses in mid-1984 and more recently boundaries of license areas have been released. These conditions promote cooperation among organizations engaged in deep ocean mining. Survey data, and where appropriate some data products, have been exchanged between various consortia. The present hiatus in at-sea activities provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the best means to proceed. This period of quiescence offers a rare moment to distill the meaningful values of an era of hectic activity to permit more efficient development in the future.

The technology available for mining of underwater mineral resources such as placers and phosphorite, typically occurring with variable amounts of overburden, has remained largely unchanged for decades. The traditional bucket ladder dredge with maximum digging depth of 48 m and monthly capacities about 500,000 m3 still reins as the only heavy duty mining system capable of working the tough materials characteristic of heavy metal placers. Attempts at adapting the bucket wheel cutter-suction dredge to these severe conditions have not yet been successful except in moving small volumes from shallow depths. High capital cost (20-30 million U.S. dollars), high cost of overburden removable, and turbidity generation for the bucket ladder are often significant negative factors in mining operations where this system remains the only viable alternative. The Japanese continue to advance the technology of their submersible dredge pump system powered by specially adapted, direct drive electric motors. Present systems are designed primarily for working surficial deposits of aggregate to depths as great as 90 meters, the pump suspended by cable from a surface vessel with an eductor pipe leading from the pump to the vessel. Such a system may prove adaptable to a variety of surficial deposits including phosphorite, shell and heavy minerals in addition to aggregate. However promising for the exploitation of surficial deposits, little advantage can be expected for the deeper buried and more difficult deposits.

During a series of dives with the submersible ALVIN in 1984, samples of massive sulfide were recovered from four vent sites. All sites occur within a linear, steep-walled cleft about 50 m wide and as much as 30 m deep. The cleft bisects the axial valley floor throughout the 15-km-long study area and appears to have been the source for the most recent volcanic eruptions in the valley. Three of the vent sites are defined by a set of discrete hydrothermal discharge zones; as many as eight have been identified over a distance of 500-800 m along the cleft floor. Sulfide deposits occur as individual and coalesced mounds, spires, and chimneys generally less than 3 m in height but a few might be as high as 10 m. The vents are also marked by extensive, yellow-to-amber ferruginous sediment and clots of bacterial matter. Some vents have extensive colonies of tube worms, gastropods, mollusks, and several predator species, such as crabs and squid. The fourth vent site has no visible discharge and consists mainly of "dead" spires and chimneys of massive sulfide. The massive sulfide samples collected with ALVIN are primarily sphalerite with minor marcasite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, isocubanite, chalcopyrite, wurtzite, and anhydrite. Bulk analyses of these chimney and spire samples show Zn contents approaching 60% by weight and significant enrichments in Ag and Cu. For the past twenty years or so the oceans of the world have been transformed in the minds of most Americans from the ultimate and nearly infinite receptacles for sewage and other wastes to an almost sacrosanct and threatened last refuge of Mother Nature from man on Earth. While this general movement has helped somewhat to moderate the flows of pollutants into the oceans, it has had severe and sometimes devastating impacts upon various attempts to develop seabed mineral resources. Marine mining proposals have been easy targets for attack. In most cases, they have short or no histories and involve prototype or first-generation methods. They commonly lack major financial backing, and do not command significant public support. Their constituents are limited. Opposition movements to such proposals have been able to evoke strong support by appealing to this "last refuge" image and depicting mining operations as the final assault. In mounting these public appeals, the movements obtain visibility and support. Because of the small and sometimes tentative status of the constituencies which support particular proposal s, the potential liabilities for opposition movements are minimal.

The release by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the leasing of polymetallic sulfide minerals on the Gorda Ridge in December 1983 resulted in strong negative public reactions. The fundamental issues affecting federal-state relations included the amount of state involvement in the planning process and the continuing question of consistency (sensu Coastal Zone Management Act). The specific issues raised included the authority of DOI to lease nonenergy minerals offshore, the economic and strategic rationale for the proposed lease, and the adequacy of the DEIS. The questions of DEIS adequacy arose in three major areas: the lack of evidence for the existence of polymetallic sulfides on the Gorda Ridge, the lack of sufficient baseline data, and the lack of a mining scenario from which to assess potential impacts. The joint Federal-State Technical Task Force was formed in February, 1984 as part of an initial agreement between the State of Oregon and the Department of the Interior to work cooperatively. Other points in the agreement were (1) a reduction of any future proposed lease area from 40 million acres to no more than 4 million acres; (2) indefinite postponement of the lease sale; (3) deletion of the nearshore portion of the possible lease area covering the physical continental shelf and slope; (4) a commitment of a "tiered" EIS process; and (5) sharing of non-proprietary data with the public.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn). As result of chemical analysis of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, polymetallic nodules observed in part of the EEZ of Mexico are possible of potential economic interest (Rosales and Carranza, 1990, 2001; Carranza and Rosales, 2003).

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. The Republic of South Africa ranks among the world leaders in both reserves and production of numerous land-based mineral commodities. Over the last three decades, however, South Africa has also identified several commodities that may exist in commercial quantities in the marine environment. The major targets include 1) placer diamonds; 2) titanium- and zirconium-rich beach sands; 3) sedimentary and concretionary phosphorite and glauconite deposits; 4) manganese nodules; and 5) hydrocarbons. South Africa ranks second in world reserves of diamonds and has potentially enormous sea resources. Diamonds are currently recovered on the Atlantic side from ancient beach gravels in the Northwest Cape Province and from the seabed south of the Orange River to Lamberts Bay. Approximately 100,000 carats (or just 1% of South Africa&apos;s total annual production) are produced each year from offshore operations. DeBeers is investing approximately $5 million per year on sea prospecting activities and currently operates three vessels in offshore recovery operations. Diamonds recovered at sea will remain a small percentage of total production because of huge land-based reserves that are mined at a fraction of the cost of seabed operations.
