Conventional flotation machines are typically limited to a particle topsize of 150-200 microns due to inherent constraints created by the pulp and froth phases. To overcome these limitations, a novel fluidized-bed flotation system called the HydroFloatTM Separator has been developed specifically for the purpose of floating coarse particles containing only small amounts of exposed hydrophobic minerals. Over the last decade, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3,000 microns diameter. More recently, sulfidebased test work has shown that this novel device is also capable of recovering metalliferous values at a grind size that is much coarser than currently used in industrial concentrators. In the current study, high resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) was used to experimentally compare the degree of exposed grain surface area necessary to recover coarse particles using the HydroFloatTM technology to that attainable using a traditional mechanical flotation cell. The data indicate that exposed grain surface area is a critical factor for coarse particle flotation. For the gold-bearing sulfide ore examined in this study, the HRXMT data suggest that near complete recoveries of coarse (850x500 µm) multiphase particles containing as little as 1% exposed grain surface area were realistically attainable using the HydroFloatTM technology. As such, this new technology may offer a unique opportunity for increasing concentrator capacity by increasing the primary grind size needed for rougher/scavenger separations.

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. "In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

"Autoclave oxidation, bacterial and chemical liberation, roasting, acid oxygen processes, atmospheric oxidation prior to cyanidation are applied to process refractory sulphide concentrates. It is obvious that the processes with the maximum effect regarding gold recovery are those in which complete destruction of sulphides takes place and gold becomes accessible for further cyanidation through liberation from sulphide “capsula”. But the significant recovery increase is often accompanied by a process complexity, high expenses for equipment purchase and maintenance. It makes material processing costinefficient. Process optimization has led to progress in ultrafine grinding, bacterial and autoclave oxidation processes. In our opinion sulphide atmospheric oxidation processes are the most interesting as oxidation there runs without high temperature (up to 100°?) and excess pressure (open units), and with acid environment close to neutral. The process of sulphide concentrates treatment named “Albion” (Albion Process™) represents a combination of ultrafine grinding and oxygen oxidation without pressure and external heating. The process has a number of advantages: sodium cyanide consumption decrease during gold leaching and high ecological compatibility. TOMS institute in collaboration with Glencore Technology Pty ltd (Australia) tested Albion technology aiming at liberation of finely disseminated gold from flotation concentrate produced from refractory ore of one Russian deposit. The testing has shown that Albion technology makes it possible to process refractory products with quite small capital investments. It enables involving medium and small refractory gold deposits into processing.INTRODUCTIONThe considerable part of the world Au-bearing reserves is present by refractory ores with finely disseminated gold. Gold in such ores is often associated with sulphide minerals and locked in so called “sulphide capsula” since it is closed inside dense sulphide grains and inaccessible to recovery by cyanidation. To treat refractory sulphide concentrates containing gold a number of processes were developed and they can be divided into three groups (Figure 1)."

"Existing environmental, health and safety regulations have forced pyrometallurgical facilities worldwide to drastically change some of their traditional methods of operation. In extreme cases, a number of facilities have been closed due to their inability to conform to these existing regulations. Tougher future legislation and government policy will lead to more stringent regulations and enforcement policies. The efficient control of smelter secondary emissions will, therefore, become critical to successful smelter operation.Much attention has been paid to the smelter primary process off-gas systems, including the development of new process designs to reduce the number of uncontrolled transfer operations. However, even the most modem smelter design requires control of its secondary contaminant sources, which mayor may not be directly related to the process operation.This paper discusses some of the potential secondary emissions encountered in many of the present process technologies. A few of the emission sources presented are only periodic in nature, such as those caused by maintenance procedures, but which have the capability of forcing smelter shut-down because of their direct impact on worker health and safety. The paper deals with a variety of topics relating to the efficient control, maintenance and monitoring of secondary emissions in copper, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and lead smelters, as well as in iron foundries and steel making facilities. Examples of the typical problems encountered in each of the above process operations are presented, including fume control at furnace tapping and slagging locations, metal transfer stations, tapping launders, and ladle transfer operations. The parameters for the most efficient design of fume capture systems, problems encountered with the handling and clean-up of certain collected emissions, and examples of successful solutions in particular operations are discussed."

"The existing methods of block diagram manipulation and vanishing variable for flowsheet simplification used in coal and mineral processing circuit evaluation and optimization cannot be easily implemented on digital computer.The signal flowgraph technique is proposed to represent and simplify determination of the relationship between intermediate or end variable and the feed in the flowsheet. Typical and existing circuits are used to demonstrate the application of the proposed technique which can easily be implemented on digital computers.IntroductionRecently there has been much interest in the analysis and optimization of coal and mineral processing circuits to assist in the pre diction of coal and mineral processing plant performance. The block diagram and the vanishing variable were introduced and utilized in the analysis of plant flowsheet. Although the block diagram approach is useful, it requires manual manipulation of the circuit block diagram which may present difficulties in the situation of complex circuits. Moreover, it may not be easy to implement on a digital computer.In this paper, the signal flowgraph technique is proposed to represent the circuit flowsheet and to simplify the determination of relationships between intermediate or end variables (fractional mass) and the feed for any coal and for any mineral processing circuit comprising size and density separators. These relationships are utilized in the analysis and/or optimization of the circuit. The proposed technique is illustrated by considering typical and existing circuits."

"Advances in our knowledge of the petrochemical attributes of deposit environments and of the character and extent of hydrothermal systems associated with certain deposit types has resulted in increased application of lithogeochemistry to exploration programs. Lithogeochemistry can be used to vector an exploration program toward an area of high potential through the use of a series of collapsing scales of analysis from a tectonic subprovince down to a particular stratigraphic segment. In the case of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits this involves the recognition ofsuitable volcanic domains, and the identification of subvolcanic intrusions and cogenetic felsic extrusive complexes. The recognition of chemical vectors within regional-scale alteration zones and associated chemical sedimentary rocks allows the geologist to identify the stratigraphic units with the most potential for hosting a base metal deposit.An integrated lithogeochemical program requires the judicious use of major, trace and rare-earth element and isotopic analysis. Standard discriminant plots may be employed to identify suitable tectonic and lithologic environments. Analysis of the chemical and mineralogical variations in broad-scale, semi-comfortable alteration zones provides a useful set of vectors to VMS mineralization. These may include contouring raw data, element ratios on XY plots, normalizing data against known rock values, or calculating mass changes in alteration zones."

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The company's strong cash position, attained late in 1989 and in the beginning of1990 through the exercise of warrants, put working capital at $83.8 million as of June 30, 1990. Long-term debt was reduced by over $10 million during the weak gold market, leaving the company with a debt to equity ratio of only 0.03. Production for the six first months of 1990 was 107 720 oz. Au, an increaseof24% over the corresponding period in 1989.Financial Profile/Results and Corporate Financial StrategiesTotal revenue for the 1989 fiscal year was $116,883,000 compared to $109,848,000 for 1988. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. Cambior's stock and warrants are traded on the Montreal and Toronto Stock Exchange."

"A review is presented of a growing number of imperatives, some self-imposed, some imposed by society, which the mining and metals industry faces in carrying out its business. These imperatives bear on all activities from the exploration phase, through engineering, design, plant construction and operation, to decommissioning.IntroductionThe mining and metals industry must learn to cope with, i.e. manage, a growing number of imperatives. Some of these, such as the need for responsible stewardship of natural resources, the requirement to respect laws and regulations, the need to provide for safe and healthy workplaces, and the need to provide appropriate returns to investors of capital , have been with the industry for a long time (fable I). But the industry now faces additional imperatives that are growing in number and in importance (fable 2):• There is the growing concern about the impact of operations, not only on the workplace environment and the external environment, but also on the need to monitor not only the chemical concentrations in various effluents but to also monitor the effects of such emissions on the environment; i.e. there is a growing concern about the ""net"" consequences of operations.• There is the need for on-going improvement in productivity and safety to compete and survive in a global economy. The global business environment has become paramount.• There is the imperative to failsafe all designs, equipment and operational procedures, and having done that to provide for containment of unavoidable spills, and to have ready and in place systems for emergency response.• There is the need, indeed the imperative, to involve all employees in various quality improvement programs.• There is the imperative to face up to ""virtual elimination/zero emissions""; and• One must have waste management plans in place to cope with the need to reduce, reuse, and recycle; and• There is the need for decommissioning plans for all operations, for the restoration of business habitats to their original states (or better). Indeed, one must engage in the decommissioning exercise from day one, i.e. right from the time of design and commissioning."

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). This work has been focused on mining veintype deposits varying from 0.9 m to 1.5 m in width using open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods.In 1989, the Dome Mine entered into a contract with Ram Raising Ltd., a joint venture company of Angus Martin and I.S. Redpath Ltd., to develop and mine a narrow vein test stope using an Alimak Raise Climber. Early results have been favourable, indicating that Alimak methods can be used successfully to mine narrow vein are.HistoryThe Dome Mine, which has been in continuous operation since 1910, is located in South Porcupine, part of the city of Timmins, Ontario. "This article addresses the relationship between mine evaluation, the tax system, and economic risk. It is based on a paper presented by the author at recent seminars in Moscow and Tashkent on the subject of mine evaluation.IntroductionTaxation can have a strong influence on the feasibility of a mining project. For the most part, because metal prices are determined on a global basis, the mining concern is not able to pass on to its customers any portion of taxes which the concern has to pay. Taxes are a direct charge against the project. The purpose of the article is to highlight the various ways whereby different taxes can affect the financial viability of a mining operation.The first part of the paper identifies different forms of taxation, and the second part of the paper addresses the different forms of taxation in terms of risk analysis and impacts on the mining project. Finally, the third part of the paper makes brief mention of using the taxation system to provide incentives with respect to investment in mining activities."

Plotting sets of data collected over time using a frequency-magnitude distribution is common with both earthquake and mining seismology. A Time-Between-Events (TBE) analysis technique simply makes use of the inter-event times and b-values (slopes of the best fit lines on the frequency-magnitude charts) from the same set of data. Four distinct patterns in TBE versus Event Magnitude have been found which suggest whether there are constant seismic sources causing populations of data, or if the smaller and larger events, within the population represent varying seismic sources. Different rates of events, identified as TBE-rates in this study, may suggest whether the events are blast induced, or not. This study was done using actual seismic datasets from hardrock mines in Canada and Australia. This was to verify the applicability of the method to multiple mining environments and to determine the practicality and implications of this methodology to enhance the interpretation of seismic source mechanisms The results of the TBE technique and other proven techniques are combined into a Seismic Mechanism Assessment Worksheet. This is a tool that allows operators to compare trends within seismic datasets with assessments of in-situ rock conditions. The goal is to enhance the understanding of rockmass failure mechanisms.

In the thiosulfate leaching of gold, degradation of the thiosulfate reagent is a major cost. One of the intermediary degradation products is trithionate, which also inhibits gold recovery from solution by ion exchange. Little attention has been given to this species in the context of gold leaching - the limited information on trithionate and its solution chemistry available in the literature is seldom directly related to gold leaching conditions. This review is a compilation of the published knowledge on trithionate, with a specific focus on identifying the relevance of this information to gold leaching and the shortcomings in the knowledge base.
