ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

Potassium-argon age dating performed recently on intrusive rocks from Copper Mountain indicates that the satellite Smelter Lakes and Voigt stocks have radio-metric ages which are indistinguishable from that of the Copper Mountain stock, as determined by Sinclair and White (1967). The complex of intrusive rocks known as the Lost Horse Intrusions also yields essentially the same radiometric age, as do biotite-sulphide-pegmatite veins on Copper Mountain.

"Corrosion rates of silicon brasses, highzinc yellow brass, low-zinc yellow brass, leadedtin bronze and silicon bronzes in both permanent-mold and sand-cast conditions were determined in soft water of pH 3, 5 and 8, and hard water of pH 8 at 70°C by electrochemical polarization technique. The alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater corrosion resistance than sand-cast condition. Corrosion rates obtained from weight loss measurements showed no observable trend of a difference between permanent-mold and sand-cast alloys.The corrosion rates decreased with increasing pH of the medium. Silicon bronze and silicon brass showed high corrosion resistance while leaded-tin bronze showed the least resistance. Addition of small amounts of aluminum improved the corrosion resistance of silicon bronzes and silicon brasses. Alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater resistance to dezincification than sand-cast alloys when average pit depth parameter is considered."

This will force them to strive for lower operating costs, to maintain a competitive position and to improve customer ser-vice so as to maintain their customer base.Ontario Hydro has been working with industry for several years. Many opportunities for cost savings have been identified involving energy efficiency, process improvements and the use of new electro technologies. One useful service that the utility can offer industry is to increase the awareness of potential opportunities suited to their operations. This paper will provide an overview of some of the projects that have been implemented and those that are presently being evaluated. An electronic data-base of electro technology applications that is under development will also be described."

"Abstract - Electromagnetic surveys were conducted over the Yava sandstone-hosted lead deposit in Nova Scotia to evaluate the usefulness of such surveys for detecting and mapping sedimentary­ hosted metallic ore deposits. Both transient and multifrequency systems were used for that purpose. The deposit consists of three zones of disseminated galena which also contain minor amounts of pyrite and sphalerite filling the interstices of the sandstone grains. Each zone overlies a basement depression and is separated from the adjacent zone by an intervening basement high. A conductive shale layer underlies the galena-rich sandstone formation at all three zones.Because the concentration of galena (3% to 4% ) and other sulfides is too low to affect the resistivity of the sandstone formations for detection by ground electromagnetic (EM) methods, the strategy for our survey was to look for areas of basement depressions and the presence of conductive shale in those depressions by EM depth soundings. The presence of the galena-rich sandstone formations could be inferred because of the close association of these two features with the deposits in the Yava area. Both transient and multifrequency EM systems were successful in mapping the basement depressions and detecting conductive shale at the three known mineralized zones. The technique, therefore, seems to offer good prospects for mapping similar stratabound sedimentary-hosted sulfide deposits."

"Nickel-copper sulphide deposits associated with basic rocks in the Quill Greek area and the White River area in the Yukon Territory have been studied and compared from the view-point of their general geology, structural geology, and the mineralogy of the ores. The relative amounts of the major constituents, magnesium, iron and calcium, and the minor constituents, nickel, cobalt and chromium have been determined spectrographically for two cross sections of the basic rocks at Quill Creek and one at White River. These data, along with petrologic and field evidence, were used to determine the sill and dyke-like character and nature of the basic intrusions. Loss on ignition is employed as a measure of the degree of serpentinization. The distribution determined shows that the serpentinization does not appear to have greatly influenced the inferred original distribution and lithophile associations of magnesium and nickel. The cobalt content may have been altered.The nickel content of the serpentinized peridotites ranges from an average of 0.36 per cent in one section to an average of 0.24 per cent in each of the other two sections studied. The cobalt averages 0.0038 per cent in the samples from the two Quill Creek sections and averages 0.0042 per cent at White River. These results have been compared with other available data.The sulphide ores are later than both the peridotite and gabbroic rocks and may be co-magmatic with them. There is no evidence in these areas to support an origin by lateral secretion; on the contrary, the alteration associated with the ores, the mineralogy and spatial relationship to basic and ultrabasic rocks, indicate the ores are derived from a basic magma."

Approximately two-thirds of the annual 210,000 tons at copper refined by AMAX Inc. at the United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey, comes from a wide variety of copper scrap ranging from low-grade smelter scrap to wirebar-grade material. The equipment and methods used to effect such large-scale metal recycling in an urban area and the measures taken to collect and recover metal values from smelter and refinery byproducts while protecting the environment from pollution are described and discussed.

The paper reviews the back-ground leading to the invention, discusses the process chemistry and historically tracks the commercial development. Engineering and cost considerations are presented.IntroductionThe year 1994 was particularly significant in terms of the technical and business development of the INCO SO2/AIR cyanide destruction process. The year marked a decade of service to the world mining community since INCO acquired the Canadian patent in 1984. In that time period, the technology had become widely recognized as the state-of-the-art process in the field of cyanide detoxification and today we enjoy the distinction of having licensed the process at over 50 project sites worldwide. The application for the process has mostly been in the mining industry in precious metal recovery plants where it offers treatment for a wide range of waste streams such as: CIP/CIL slurries, Merrill-Crowe barren bleed solutions and/or re-pulped filter cakes, tailings pond water recycle or discharge, make-up water to flotation circuits and feed to underground backfill plants. The process also applies to the treatment of high cyanide rinsewaters from metal plating shops. More recently the process is being applied to the rinsing and abandonment of heap leach pads where it has proven to be a very cost-effective application of the INCO process. The distinct advantages that have led to the success of the process are the ability to work on slurries as well as solutions and the significantly low cost of sulphur dioxide products. The process is safe and easy to manage and uses all forms of SO2(liquid, gas or salts) which gives the process tremendous versatility with respect to geographic application. "Geological data, production trends and current projects underway suggest that enough molybdenum will be available from more diversified sources to meet the world's growing demands. The growth in molybdenum consumption has been primarily related to its beneficial effects as an alloying agent in steel. This rapid growth has been deliberately fostered by stable prices, adequate supply and application research. The molybdenum industry is now in a process of change which has been seen in several other metals, such as aluminum and nickel. As supply sources have become more diversified, the market has become more competitive. The recent drop in consumption has led to excess production capacity, accumulation of substantial producer inventories and increased market uncertainties. While consumption is expected to increase in the next two to three years, it will take some time to absorb the excess capacity and inventory. The increased proportion of by-product capacity indicates that prices may become more variable. Producer discipline will be required to prevent serious price erosion in times of surplus. Future prices may not continue to increase with inflation. For the longer term, several factors favour the increased consumption of molybdenum. Engineering requirements are becoming more severe and molybdenum alloys can help to meet these changing needs. In addition, consumers can rely on a large and increasing supply of molybdenum. A 7 per cent growth rate in consumption can probably be sustained through the next decade, but new applications and reasonably stable prices will be needed to make this possible."

With these words, Preston Cloud begins a recent editorial, in Science(l), in which he presents a brief resume of some of the findings of the Committee on Resources and Man of the National Academy of Science-National Research Council(20.Their report, which is based on a two-year study by an extremely competent group and consists of some 250 pages of text, is even more far-reaching and sobering than the report on Energy Resources(3). It begins by quoting Sir Macfarlane Burnet as follows:""There are three imperatives: to reduce war to a minimum; to stabilize human population, and to pre-vent the progressive destruction of the earth's irreplaceable resources.(4)"

"IN APRIL, 1965, the employee relations department (then called the personnel department) was established as a separate function within the company. Its aims and objectives were to hire an effective work force to operate the open-pit mine and the mill, which were at that time under development and construction. It was also directed to develop a sound policy for employee relations to assist the company in maintaining a stable and properly motivated work force, which included the establishment of satisfactory wage rates and fringe benefits, safety, fire protection and security. During the 8 years that the department has been in existence the scope of the company's operations has expanded to include a zinc plant and an underground mine. The work force has enlarged accordingly and now totals 1,680 employees working at the two sites, separated by 34 road miles. To cover the employee relations functions the department has a total of 29 members at the two sites. The department is organized under a superintendent, who has an employee relations supervisor, a safety director and a fire chief reporting directly to him. The employee relations supervisor, with 2 employment officers and 2 clerks, handles hiring, first-stage employee grievanoos, terminations, employee records, and the organization of company-sponsored functions and meetings. Safety, training and security are the responsibility of the safety director, who has 3 safety supervisors, 16 security men, 1 first-aid attendant and one hearing conservation technician to service the two sites. In New Brunswick, during the 1970&apos;s, rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Basin of the Fundy Epieugeosyncline have been the target of intense exploration and drilling programs. Sylvinite ore was discovered in three structural basins of the Moncton Basin near Sussex through a drilling program sponsored jointly by the Federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. In 1973, exploration and development rights to the western end of the Moncton Basin were awarded to the Potash Company of America. One high-grade sylvinite unit, varying between 15 and 70feet in true thickness, with a strike length in excess of 5 miles, is located near the stratigraphic top of the assymetric, semi-diapiric, locally overturned anticline. Late in 1975, exploration and development rights to the Marchbank Syncline were awarded to International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. To date, a stratigraphic evaporite sequence, forming the semi-diapiric core of the syncline, has been shown to contain one major high-grade sylvinite unit averaging 70 feet in true thickness over a strike length in excess of 2 miles. Both properties appear to have potential considerably in excess of that revealed by the exploratory drilling, and both, because of numerous mineralogical, structural and stratigraphic similarities, are thought to be depositionally contemporaneous. Both potash deposits lie within 50 miles of the Saint John all-weather deepwater port, thus affording easy access to eastern and mid-western U.S. markets. Further opportunities for potash exploration in New Brunswick are considered excellent, as there are large untested areas with favourable geology and known potassium water anomalies and negative gravity anomalies occurring in the Moncton and Cumberland basins, and in the Central Basin of New Brunswick.

ABSTRACT The viscosity of concentrated kaolinite or illite clay in aqueous suspensions was measured in the presence and absence of a small amount of montmorillonite (<1 wt%). To avoid solids settling and to increase the sensitivity of the suspension viscosity measurements, solids concentrations higher than 38 wt% were used. The pH of the suspensions and the concentration of calcium and bicarbonate ions were found to significantly impact the viscosity of the clay suspensions. The results showed a significant increase in the viscosity of kaolinite suspensions with the addition of as low as 0.25 wt% of montmorillonite on a solids weight basis. In addition to illustrating the role of water chemistry in modifying slurry rheological properties, our study demonstrated that viscosity measurement could be a simple, yet sensitive technique for determining the content of smectite clays, such as montmorillonite, in a complex mix of various types of clay.

"Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting of hand-sorted galena ore from other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the f oundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. In 1901, the Trail smelter diversified into lead; and when the CM&S Co. acquired the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie and the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the smelter was guaranteed a firm supply of lead ore. The company also purchased the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, which even before the turn of the century had constructed the first of four hydroelectric generating plants on the Kootenay River near Trail. "The Bernie Lake pegmatite near Lac Du Bonnet in southern Manitoba is a complexly zoned pegmatite containing several lithium-bearing units in addition to the western world's largest known reserve of cesium. The pegmatite forms a flat-lying ellipsoidal body within an east-west-trending Precambrian amphibolite. The pegmatite enclosed by this vertically schistose amphibolite lies near the eastern tip of a granitic intrusive. The relationship of this intrusive to the pegmatite is obscured by Bernie lake. To date, the pegmatite body has been delineated aver an area of approximately 80 acres; it attains a maximum thickness of 280 feet. Several distinct zones, including three assemblages of economic importance, comprise the pegmatite itself. The combined spodumene and lepidolite assemblages provide a recoverable defined lithium ore reserve of almost 5 million tons averaging more than 2 per cent lithium oxide. The recoverable cesium ore of the pollucite assemblage provides 300,000 tons averaging more than 20 per cent cesium oxide; this represents more than half of the western world's pollucite reserve. The Bernie Lake pegmatite deposit, owned by Chemalloy Minerals Limited, is well located with respect to the growing United States markets, and its reserves of cesium are large enough to enable it, under favourable economic circumstances, to become the major producer of this metal in North America."
