Ranger is a uranium mining operation located within one of the most environmentally sensitive regions of Australia. Geology has played an important role in mine planning, operations and rehabilitation since discovery of the deposits 25 years ago. The Ranger orebodies have a reserve total of 166 300 tonnes of U308 including 90 400 tonnes of U308 at North Ranger. At current milling rates these reserves give a mine life greater than 40 years. The uranium is hosted in Lower Proterozoic rocks of the Cahill I ormation and is associated with strong chlorite alteration. In pit grade control involves the use of calibrated probes and a radiometric truck discriminator allowing fast, accurate grade determination of material. Ore is defined at a cut-off grade of 0.2 per cent U308. Mineralised material is defined by the Uranium Mining (Environmental Control) Act 1979 (UMEC Act) at a grade of 0.02 per cent U30s. Natural water levels in the #1 Pit area vary as much as 7.5 metres between wet and dry seasons. Ground water inflow into the pit during the dry season is 600 m3/day. No significant slope failures have occurred in the pit. The environmental impact of mining operations is constantly monitored. Rehabilitation of non-mineralised stockpiles is ongoing. This paper discusses the interaction between geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics and grade control with the present mining operation.

At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

THE Sulphide Corporation's works for the smelting of ores containing lead, gold, and silver are situated close to the Cockle Creek railway station, on the main Northern railway line, and are about 95 miles from Sydney and 10 miles from Newcastle. A branch line runs to the works, and siding accommodation and bins are provided for expeditiously handling all ores sent for treatment. The Corporation also possesses wharfage facilities at the port of Newcastle, where consignments of ores arriving by sea can be handled direct into railway trucks for conveyance to the works.The greater portion of the ore treated at Cockle Creek comes from the Corporation's mine at Broken Hill, but a large quantity of other grades is also purchased and treated.

This paper presents a phenomena-based model for investigating the possibility of scrap melting in an Open Slag Bath Furnace (OSBF) for green ironmaking. The goal of this study is to enhance the circularity of the steelmaking process by utilising scrap as a green source of iron in OSBFs. The model takes into account the fundamental differences between OSBFs and traditional processes such as Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOFs). The model considers three primary regions where scrap heating and melting occur: the solid feed pile, slag and hot metal. It accounts for factors such as the furnace geometry, scrap charging mechanism and specific heat and mass transfer properties of the reactor. The model was validated using literature data and was used to investigate the heating and melting behaviour of individual scrap particles under various process parameters. The study finds that the scrap melting process in OSBFs involves three stages: shell formation, shell remelting and subsequent melting of the parent scrap. The carbon content of the scrap and the liquid hot metal plays a critical role in determining the melting behaviour. Depending on the carbon concentration and temperature, the melting process can be heat transfer controlled or mass transfer controlled. The paper also examines the scrap feeding methods in OSBFs, including direct charging into the slag or charging through a feed pile. The model provides insights into the melting rate of scrap compared to Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in OSBFs and highlights the role of carbon in this process. Overall, this phenomena-based model contributes to the understanding of scrap melting behaviour in OSBFs and provides valuable insights for optimising the circularity and efficiency of green ironmaking processes. The findings of this study can inform the design and operation of OSBFs, paving the way for increased utilisation of scrap as a sustainable feedstock in the steel industry.

The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

IT will be noticed, from the following contributed papers on the various plant, what an infinite number of parts are required to be kept in active operation in order to derive a resultant product of commercial value from the ores and materials received at the works. Crude ores and concentrates, in every degree of complex structure and resistance to treatment, are arriving daily from near and distant places, moreover their metallic contents are so varied that an outsider, unacquainted with the operations, would naturally wonder how it is possible that the rare elements are to be sorted out and classified into their true order, to meet industrial requirements.The proposition is necessarily not a simple one and owners of mining properties have naturally refrained from smelting their complex ores on account of the technical difficulties of attaining high efficiency and recovery of the metals, where limitations are imposed in procuring a variation of ores that lead to the best smelting and refinmg result. This difficulty obviously imposes many disabilities on the smelter, who is prepared to accept all such complex ores, and it may be said that were therenot available a large weekly supply of lead concentrates from the company's own mine at Broken Hill, of standard quality, much of the material being treated in the world today would certainly not be marketable.In order to sustain full efficiency, each section of the works must maintain its.true balance and synchronize with the requirements of such other departments as are dependent on its partially treated materials. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process by which coal is converted in situ to a combustible gas that can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. The process has been used in commercial-size projects in the former Soviet Union for more than 40 years, while significant national research programs have been undertaken in the United States and Western Europe. The Chinchilla UCG project is located at a site southeast of Chinchilla in Queensland. The UCG operation commenced in December 1999. A controlled shutdown of the process was initiated in January 2002 and successfully completed in April 2003. The process is currently under conservation and ready for restoration of gas production for commercial use in the near future. Groundwater plays an important role in the gas formation process during UCG. Most of the process water required for chemical reactions is usually derived from the coal seam itself and from surrounding aquifers. If insufficient water is available for chemical reactions the UCG gas will contain reduced concentrations of combustible components, and conversely, excessive water influx into the process area would cool down the reactor and thus limit the energy available for gas production reactions. Because of the importance of groundwater in the gasification reactions, and the potential to contaminate groundwater if the process is not correctly controlled, it is essential to predict and to control the groundwater influx into underground gasifiers during and after underground gasification. Control of groundwater requires a thorough understanding of hydrogeological conditions in the vicinity of the gasifier in order to be able to predict inflow rates, and constant monitoring throughout the process of water production rates and groundwater pressure in the coal seam and adjacent aquifers. Hydrogeological testing and groundwater monitoring in the vicinity of the UCG operation commenced six months in advance of its initiation. Monitoring of groundwater pressures in the vicinity of the gasifier have also been undertaken using vibrating wire piezometers installed in the coal seam at varying distances from the gasifier. This paper presents the results of the hydrogeological testing and groundwater quality monitoring carried out at the site, which show that it is possible to operate a UCG process without uncontrolled impacts on groundwater.

This paper gives the background to the development of solvent extraction processes for the recovery of metals from aqueous solutions. Its growing importance in Australia for the recovery of both uranium and copper is dis- cussed, as well as the developments in mixer-settler design as applied to recent plants. The economic significance of solvent extraction as an alterna- tive to cementation is discussed and important features of each process are highlighted by comparison of costs for each process in a hypothetical situa- Tion.

This paper presents the results from research undertaken in the CSIRO-funded Mineral Futures Collaboration Cluster on developing a future vision for the mining and minerals industry – Vision 2040 – in which the industry proactively contributes to long-term benefit for communities and the nation. Our research finds that Australia is currently experiencing mining-led prosperity due to high commodity prices, yet underlying this are challenges for maintaining market share due to lower productivity from extracting lower grade, more remote and complex ores. Whilst much focus has been on developing new technologies for finding and processing such ores, this paper assesses these activities, together with policy and market innovations in the context of needing to strengthen social, environmental and financial capital for long-term benefit. Vision 2010 sees mining activities linked to systems that are net providers of clean water, energy and ecosystem services, rather than minimising negative impacts alone; sovereign wealth funds are used to harness current prosperity for future innovation. Using a case study in lithium and comparisons to iron/steel, coal and copper – we illustrate the opportunities for new technology, policy and market innovations to link the mining and minerals sector in Australia to more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and prosperity.

Desulfurisation of steel during ladle refining is governed by both thermodynamics and kinetics. For effective desulfurisation, thermodynamically, a low partial pressure of oxygen at the steel-slag interface and highly basic slag which possess a large sulfide capacity are desired. Kinetically, the mass transfer coefficient of sulfur in the liquid steel and in the slag determines the rate of desulfurisation. A fast desulfurisation rate is achieved by maintaining sufficiently strong argon stirring of the melt. In the present work, sulfur mass balance for steel and slag was performed after the desulfurisation treatment for several industrial heats. The decrease in the sulfur quantity of the liquid steel was more than the increase in the sulfur quantity of the slag. The discrepancy in the sulfur mass balance suggests that the sulfur could be transferred to: (a) the gas (via slag) phase; or to (b) the refractory (crucible) phase. The preliminary investigation of the refractory samples taken at slag-refractory and steel-refractory interface showed no interaction of sulfur with the refractory. Therefore, the possibility of sulfur transfer to the gas phase was verified by carrying out melting experiments of sulfur containing slag in an argon/air atmosphere. Sulfur containing slag was initially melted in an MgO-C crucible under an argon atmosphere followed by creating the air atmosphere just above the melt. Careful sampling and analysis from the cold spots of the crucible, much above the melt surface, revealed formation of a fibrous structure. Scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis of these fibrous deposits confirmed the presence of oxides and sulfides. Oxidation of sulfur containing slag under air atmosphere was also performed using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) set-up. It showed a constant sulfur loss in the range of 1300– 1500°C. Thermodynamic calculations carried out using FactSage™ ver 8.3 for these experimental conditions are in good agreement with the observed results.

Flotation is the one of the most used techniques for the mineral separation of non-ferrous ores worldwide. However, the increase of the complexness along with the decrease of ores liberation sizes ought to become important challenges for mineral processing, including flotation. It now appears necessary to better understand the fundamentals of the flotation process, particularly the adsorption of flotation reagents at the liquid/mineral interfaces, to propose further improvements. Flotation relies on different phenomena: surfactants adsorption, on one hand, and collision, adhesion, and transport of particles with bubbles, on the other hand. For acknowledging the reagents adsorption mechanisms, molecular modelling tools borrowed from chemical and material sciences, are increasingly used. Atomistic simulations were successfully applied to study the flotation reagents interaction with various mineral surfaces, eg of two common minerals from iron ores, kaolinite, and magnetite surfaces, or with fluorite surface, a tungsten ores common gangue mineral.

The use of computational simulation to predict the performance of existing equipment or for the design of improved mineral processing equipment will be referred to as Computational Mineral Processing (CMP) in this paper. The emphasis will be on solving the governing equations for liquid solid flows in complex geometric domains to obtain, typically, the three-dimensional distributions of velocity and pressure for the liquid phase and the velocity and concentration for the solid phase. The underlying technology, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is very well-developed in other industries (aircraft, car and chemical) and forms a vital part of product design and analysis. The subsequent design of improved mineral processing equipment may also involve finite element structural analysis (FESA). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element structural analysis (FESA) are part of the generic discipline of Computational Engineering and Science (CES). Ciment and Scherlis (1993) define CES as `The systematic application of computing systems and computational solution techniques to mathematical models formulated to describe and simulate phenomena of scientific and engineering interest'. Increasing computer power (Kaufmann and Smarr, 1993), is a dominant factor determining the rapid growth of industrial utilisation of CES. This increase is happening at both the supercomputer and the workstation level. Indeed, today's typical workstation, a Hewlett-Packard 735, is as powerful as a CDC 7600, the leading supercomputer in 1970. Future computer architectures are expected to become increasingly parallel (Gartner Group, 1990) allowing a sustained performance of a teraflop (a million megaflops) to be achieved well before the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000. It is recognised that the modem development of most disciplines in the physical sciences rests on the three complementary strategies of experimentation, analysis and computational simulation. As the 21st century is approached the volume of computational simulation, both fundamental and applied, is growing dramatically and the role of experimentation is diminishing. In the area of equipment design, CES provides the following advantages over experimental testing and measurement: 1. lead time in design and development is significantly reduced; 2. CES can simulate conditions not reproducible in experimental tests; 3. CES provides detailed and comprehensive information; and 4. CES is more cost-effective and time-efficient. The ultimate benefit for industry is greater productivity and hence greater profitability. The broader issues in relation to CFD are discussed by Fletcher (1993b). In the five- to ten-year time frame, growth in computer power will make it practical to combine CFD and FESA with optimisation procedures to produce a design process that is almost fully computerised. Mark Westfield, writing in The Australian on 16 May 1994 stated: The role of the independent expert is crucial to Australia's investment system. When it falls down, there can be very dramatic consequences. The scope of these consequences was dramatically illustrated in the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v. Hutcheson (1983) 8 ACLR 123 when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million, well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be sought in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for the result of the appeal rested on whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered, rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability. Thus: Those who prepare experts' reports in company cases carry a heavy moral responsibility, whatever their legal duties may be... Unless high standards are observed by those who prepare these reports, there is a danger that systems established for the protection of the investing public will, in fact, operate to their detriment through reliance placed on those reports and on the reputations of those who furnish them. A series of organoclays with different surfactant arrangements were prepared by ion exchange. The resulting organoclays were investigated using a combination of characterisation techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric measurement (TG) and N2 adsorption-desorption. In the present study, the pores within the organoclays were discussed on the basis of the micro- structural parameters, including BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, pore size, surfactant loading and distribution. The results show that both BET-N2 surface area and pore volume decrease from low to high packing density of the surfactant as the average pore size increases. Two basic organoclay models were proposed for hexadecyltrimethyl- ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) modified montmorillonites: 1. the surfactant mainly occupied the clay interlayer, and2. both the clay interlayer space and external surface were modified by surfactant. This study demonstrates that the pore structure of the resulting organoclays has a significant influence on the sorption efficiency and mechanism of p-nitrophenol onto the organoclays.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

The composition and volume of geothermal fluids in New Zealand offers considerable potential for the extraction of various metals and minerals, as well as being a source of heat energy, steam and gases, and for use in generating electricity. While extracting products from geothermal fluids is technically feasible, positive economics is the key driver for commercial success; however, there is no assessment of this opportunity that identifies simple, cost-effective processing technologies and provides a greater understanding of the economic viability and barriers for implementing such technologies. The Clermont Coal Mine will export steaming coal from the Wolfang Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. It is expected to be developed in the mid-1990s.The majority of the reserves lie in the 30 m thick Wolfang Seam. Overburden depth varies from 80 m at the subcrop line to 190 m in the centre of the basin.
