Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

The automatic control of grinding mills for optimum performance is an area of control which can benefit from new control concepts and technology. Economic pressures dictate that the mining industry undertake changes in process design, control system strategy and operations organisation that call for innovative reappraisals of the control system performance necessary to enhance the functions of the process operator. As more dependence is placed on instrumentation the chances of abrupt, total loss of process control through an entire production complex becomes a major concern of the plant manager.

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. The mining industry faces numerous challenges in swiftly evaluating and exploiting new mineral deposits to meet the escalating demand for critical minerals and metals. These challenges necessitate the adoption of innovative techniques and technologies to expedite development cycles and facilitate the efficient exchange of knowledge and expertise. Traditional mineral exploration methods rely heavily on data governance, visualisation tools, and expert interpretation skills, often operating in isolation and limiting the integration of valuable data and knowledge (Lindsay and Perrouty, 2019). To address these integration challenges and bridge the industry’s knowledge gap, the concept of a digital twin offers a holistic solution (Ahn, 2021; Nagovitsyn and Stepacheva, 2021).

The paper provides a brief review of the multivariate uniform conditioning and the localised multivariate uniform conditioning techniques and presents a case study based on a porphyry copper gold deposit in Peru. Two other important scenarios have been investigated and will be particularly emphasised: The recovered selective mining unit (SMU)s depend on a combination of copper and gold content, which can be expressed by means of ænet smelter returnsÆ (NSR). Two approaches are compared. Firstly, the application of a composite cut-off on NSR on the joint distribution of each grade and the application of uniform conditioning to three variables is investigated, ie for the first approach NSR is used as the main variable. The second approach considers copper as the main variable. In the case of multiple domains the procedure used to apply the technique to process mixed panels is clarified and recommendations are made.

New Zealand's Land and Income Tax Act 1954 contains unique incentives for companies engaged in mining certain specified minerals or petroleum. Sections 152 and 153 provide for the taxable income of such companies to be based not on profits made but on dividends paid to shareholders. A significant saving in tax results, particularly where profits are not distributed: but the Act attempts to ensure that undistributed profits are used for further mineral exploration and development. To encourage investment in the mining industry, persons taking up shares in a company mining for the specified minerals or petroleum are entitled to a one-third deduction in respect of monies paid on the shares and used by the company for its purposes; and company shareholders may make loans to the company and write-off such loans for tax purposes to an amount of up to half their taxable income. Maximum utilisation of the tax incentives calls for careful consideration as to whether a mining or petroleum company should be financed by way of loan capital or share capital.

CABS - Costs and Budget System - is being developed to provide more appropriate tools to assist cost control. The most important of these tools is responsibility accounting, that is to ensure the respons- ibility for costs and budgets is placed at the lowest possible managerial level in the Company. The system design and computer techniques utilized include the use of on-line facilities for enquiry purposes plus entry and validation of data. Data base management is used to permit the complex relationships that exist between data in CABS to be defined and maintained. The system must be flexible in order to cater for organisational and other maintenance changes with minimum time delays. The major outputs of the system are reports produced in several cost dissections, by responsibility, by products by cost collection group and type of expense. A significant role in CABS has been played by users. This includes development, control and review of the system proposals in order to ensure that the objectives and requirements from all sections in the Company are met. This role has included Project Leader for the system plus a committee formed to provide formal acceptance of the system Design.

The importance of good winding rope practice is stressed. Details of the ropes used for various duties in the four shafts of The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) are given. Inspection, testing (including non destructive methods), maintenance and rope discard criteria are discussed. There are sane catments about rope installation methods and an appendix is included which outlines the appropriate statutory requirements for winding ropes in New South Wales (NSW).

Existing fluid flow techniques may be readily applied to the design of ranges for seam gas drainage. The Reynolds number characterises the flow regime within the pipe and it can be used in conjunction with data on absolute pipe surface roughness to determine the system friction factor. The application of the solution to the isothermal compressible flow equation utili- sing Moody friction factors and the concept of equivalent length of pipe for fittings and valves provides a practical method for sizing gas ranges. The physical capacity of a range can be decreased by the existence of significant quantities of water in the range and also by the ingress of air into the system at poor pipe joints etc. Both problems can be elimin- ated by adequate attention to design detail.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

Slag fuming (SF) is a critical process for recycling zinc-containing slags, but the corrosive nature of molten slag poses challenges to the reactor durability. The freeze-lining (FL) technique offers a solution by forming a protective layer on the reactor wall. It requires intensive cooling using watercooled jackets, which can stabilise the FL while compromising the energy efficiency of the process. This study presents a computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-based model to optimise the SF process by considering FL formation and its impact on heat transfer and reactor wall temperature. A volumeof- fluid (VOF) model is coupled with a mixture continuum (MC) solidification model to capture the intricate multiphase flow dynamics within the SF furnace. Two FL types are considered: FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the slag bath region; and FL solidifying on the reactor wall in the freeboard region. The FL of the first type forms when the slag temperature drops below liquidus temperature. The FL of the second type only forms when a splash-induced slag droplet collides with the freeboard wall and solidifies. A series of splashing events are necessary to coat the freeboard wall. The simulation was run until a global energy balance was reached. This means that the heat losses from the water-cooled jacket, bottom wall, outlet and fuming balance the heat gains from the hot gas injected through the submerged plasma torches. The increase in FL thickness, due to its low thermal conductivity, reduces the heat losses through the reactor walls. The calculated FL thickness and heat fluxes were in good agreement with industrial data, validating the model’s credibility. The simulation results provided valuable insights into the fuming process, including slag bath temperature evolution, slag splashing dynamics, FL formation patterns, local heat fluxes through the reactor wall and overall energy balance. These findings can inform process optimisation strategies to enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of SF operations. The authors have built a prior version of the model framework and applied it to simulate FL formation in an electric smelting furnace (ESF). The results from both the ESF and the current SF highlight the applicability of such model framework to a range of industrial processes involving FL formation. This model framework can ultimately contribute to more energy-efficient and sustainable industrial operations.

In July 2004 a flotation concentrate regrind circuit was commissioned in the æHigh GradeÆ Ridgeway concentrator at NewcrestÆs Cadia Valley Operations. This was the culmination of two years of project testing, process design and planning which commenced shortly after commissioning the concentrator in March 2002. During the two-year project evolution alternative grinding technologies were evaluated from conventional ball milling through to sand milling. A Detritor mill was eventually selected for the duty and the criteria on which this selection was based will be presented. As the project evolved so too did the equipment sizing with the concentrator quickly exceeding design capacity of 4 Mtpa and currently averaging 5.6 Mtpa, the process design had to accommodate this and future potential throughput increases. This paper will focus on the supporting testwork, circuit surveys and concentrate properties which were used as the design basis for the project. The economic evaluation which led to the project receiving board approval in November 2003 will also be presented. Detailed design and construction management issues will be discussed as will preliminary results and findings up to November 2004.

Reserves of high-grade quartz gravel, lignite and timber suitable for the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon on large scale occur within 40 miles of Bluff Harbour. Undeveloped hydroelectric power resources on the Clutha River are located within 50 miles of the most promising quartz gravel deposits while ooencastable lignite, potentially suitable for electric power production, occurs in the same locality as the quartz gravels. A preliminary study of production economics indicates that the commercial feasibility of silicon/ferro-silicon production would depend mainly on the cost of electric power, total capital cost of plant, and the market value of the products. The proximity of Bluff Harbour is advantageous for the export of products.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.
