The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

The problem of metering fine particulate material at low flowrate is often encountered in metallurgical experiment. This note describes a feeder which wa developed to provide metered flows of copper sulphide concentrate in the range of 0'1-0'7 g/min.It is believed that the present device is easier to operate than previously described feeders (e.g. Hamor and Smith, 1971). It may have applications in the field of analytical chemistry, as well as in metallurgical investigations.

In this paper, the author briefly introduces the resource characteristics of Chinese iron ore, as well as the present increasing market demand for iron concentrate. The SHP-3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is used to separate complicated weak-magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-3200 HIMS, including modifying the angle of magnetic polar from 90¦ to 83¦, cooling the exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing equipment to wash off magnetic particles and adjusting the tooth-space of the matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm to enhance the recovery of fine particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In order to improve the recovery of difficult-separated iron, the film-magnetic separation technique is applied into the HIMS and a new LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically. A flowing-film feeder is also added and the feed mouth is modified to make a slurry flow formed in the form of film along the wall of matrix. The microstructure and dissemination character of the mineral particles is studied, and the specific susceptibility of the primary minerals is measured. Then the distributive characteristics of a magnetic field for the separator with film-magnetic technique and the motion of particles in the process of separation are all analysed. By introducing the film-magnetic separation technique to SHP-Φ700 HIMS, the recovery of iron can be raised from 69.45 per cent to 76.07 - 78.96 per cent with the similar grade of concentrates of iron. Such an increase of 9.51 per cent in the recovery also shows that it is feasible for such film-magnetic separation technique to be applied into HIMS.

A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.

The processes that take place during the development of a heating are difficult to visualise. Bulk coal self-heating tests at The University of Queensland (UQ) using a two-metre column are providing graphic evidence of the stages that occur during a heating. Data obtained from these tests, both temperature and corresponding off-gas evolution can be transformed into what is effectively a video-replay of the heating event. This is achieved by loading both sets of data into a newly developed animation package called Hotspot. The resulting animation is ideal for spontaneous combustion training purposes as the viewer can readily identify the different hot spot stages and corresponding off-gas signatures. Colour coding of the coal temperature, as the hot spot forms, highlights its location in the coal pile and shows its ability to migrate upwind. An added benefit of the package is that once a mine has been tested in the UQ two-metre column, there is a permanent record of that particular coals performance for mine personnel to view.

Incompetent ore and country rock have caused stability problems in longhole open stopes. Fully grouted pre-placed cablebolts have reduced these by preventing ground relax- ation and joint dilation to maintain a self supporting rock structure. Larger atope spans can now be opened with the same or smaller pillar. Mining methods are expected to become less dependent on original ground conditions. Effect of spacing, orientation and stress distribution along the cablebolt is not fully understood at this stage and requires more Observation.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.

The ownership, policies, organisation, structure, market, financial considerations and communications of a large resource project vary significantly through its discovery, feasibility, development and production phases. The extent of these changes, from discovery in 1957 through to 1979, is examined for the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and some of the factors that influenced it are detailed. This shows that only some of the influences are under the control of the mine owner/operator, despite their significant impact on the returns for the massive capital invested. The effect of the general business climate on the various phases is also examined.

The backfilling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 Mtpa underground Long Hole Open Stoping (LHOS) operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), surface rockfill and underground rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via boreholes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process either at optical or infrared (IR) wavelengths. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the placement of both rock and CAF fill in the stopes. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimisation of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilisation of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill monitoring device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the backfilling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by æseeingÆ through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is also discussed.

The Grao Para and Rio Maria greenstone banded iron formations (BIFs), within the Carajas mineral province, exhibit distinct lithological and petrographic fabrics, together with pronounced differences in their surface expression, real thickness, iron grade and tonnage. These geological differences support a new model for the regional distribution of iron formations in the Carajas Mineral Province.

This paper provides an overview of methods for measuring tunnel deflection and construction’s effects on the surrounding environment during and post construction. It will also review illustrative case studies from within Australia and overseas that are most relevant to local construction conditions. Systems illustrated include; vibrating wire and fibre optic strain gauges, extensometers, load cells and piezometers. A novel system using radar interferometry which requires no contact to the structure will also be investigated.In Australia, the majority of tunnelling activity occurs in urban areas (or in the case of mining in rural area) with limited seismic risk. However, the unexpected movement of tunnels is an important factor for structural engineers to monitor. During construction, monitoring is focused on the performance of the tunnelling lining, the supports under real conditions and the effects on surrounding infrastructure. After construction, monitoring will determine the effect of live traffic loads and can also evaluate the durability and any degradation of the tunnel. The aging of some tunnels or the forces subjected by nearby major construction can directly lead to a decrease in structural stability and deformation.The conventional way of inspecting and monitoring those tunnel movements is to have engineers physically enter the tunnel and carry out the measurement work. Manual techniques include tunnel wall convergence checks or total station measurement. However the associated costs are high and measurement process is difficult as some tunnel areas are inaccessible and the data collection interval is limited by the speed of the operator.Automated sensor networks utilising extensometers, fibre optics sensors or strain gauges can be used on tunnel segments or surrounding buildings. "The Mbalam Iron Ore Project covers mineralisation in two areas of metamorphosed hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-west Congo Craton; namely at Mbarga in south-east Cameroon and at Nabeba in north-west Republic of Congo. The site locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.The Mbalam Project history is an example of a compressed, yet highly successful, exploration timetable. Due to the thick inaccessible equatorial forest location, the first access was by helicopter in February 2007 at the Mbarga Deposit. Drilling commenced four months later in June 2007. A maiden JORC Code compliant æhigh-grade hematiteÆ inferred mineral resource (190 Mt at 60 per cent Fe) was defined in May 2008, followed by a maiden æitabirite hematiteÆ inferred resource in July 2008 (1.2 Bt at 37 per cent Fe). Subsequently, road access to Nabeba was established in January 2010, with a maiden high-grade hematite inferred mineral resource (200 Mt at 63 per cent Fe) identified only five months later in June 2010. A maiden itabirite hematite inferred resource at Nabeba was announced in June 2012 (1.4 Bt at 34 per cent Fe). The success of the exploration programs has been due to two main factors: Establishment of high-quality camps and facilities at Mbarga and later at Nabeba in Republic of Congo. Exploration support included satellite links for site servers and communications, field logging computers, data acquisition software, an on-site sample preparation laboratory, portable hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and company-owned drill rigs from 2009. An experienced and dynamic technical support group based in Perth to provide database facilities, data evaluation, internal auditing and software support, resulting in expedited resource estimation and economic evaluation with state-of-the-art mining software. In June 2012, Sundance Resources Ltd announced the current mineral resources for the project of 775.4 Mt at 57.2 per cent Fe of high-grade hematite and 4.047 Bt at 36.3 per cent Fe of itabirite hematite. In December 2012, high-grade hematite ore reserves of 436.3 Mt at 62.6 per cent Fe were announced. These world-class resources and reserves have been delineated and evaluated in a very rapid time frame. Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

Vibration analysis for diagnosis of machines is a powerful instrument for condition monitoring. Especially for diagnosis of antifriction bearings various equipment and techniques have been developed and are available. The envelope analysis is the most reliable method for bearing diagnosis. Different bearing failures lead to different patterns of the envelope spectrum. Checking the amplitudes of characteristic bearing frequencies is mostly not sufficient for a reliable diagnosis. Therefore human experts compare the pattern of the spectrum with typical patterns of bearing defects. In this paper a diagnosis system is presented which imitates this action of human experts. Using a neural net the system not only distinguishes typical bearing defects but also detects unbalance, beating of disengaged machine parts and other kinds of machine failures.

Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis of metallurgical products. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine process control. Knowledge of the crystal structures of the major phases is essential for Rietveld analysis, and these are well known for most minerals and major phases in metallurgical products. It provides the basic structural information necessary for the determination of mineral stoichiometry and for elucidating solid solution behaviour. Modern methods, such as simulated annealing and charge flipping, permits the determination of crystal structures from powder data. Unit cell data can be used where conventional microchemical analysis is unable to provide an answer to the extent of solid solution in ilmenite roasting. Unit cell data (by XRD) is used to determine the amount of roasting necessary for the development of magnetisation to be able to separate chromite from an ilmenite concentrate. Phase quantification is probably the most widely used application of XRD analysis. It is used for materials balance in the minerals and cement industries, and it is finding novel applications in the iron and steel industry. Applications of XRD in high-temperature metallurgical processes are increasing. In this paper the phase chemistry of iron ore sinters, the evaluation of subsolidus reactions in titania slags and the identification of furnace accretions are discussed. Despite the success of the Rietveld method in phase quantification, the method still needs further development in the quantification of closely related or polytypic phases. The quantification of pyrrhotite phases using various Rietveld programs still gives ambiguous results. This is also true for the different SFCA phases in iron ore sinters. Clearly the analysis of similar phases, differing only in the presence of weak superlattice reflections is still problematic.

The need for ventilation around mine workings derives from the various gases found in mine atmospheres and CH4, the principal diluent is in quantity depending upon several factors. Several of these are seam thickness, depth of cover and working method and the French Regulations typify controls on coal mine ventilation. There are many factors affecting production of CH4, in addition to coal production, such as the geological setting of the working seam, the geometry of workings and the rates of advance. The possibilities of spontaneous combustion should not be overlooked. The complexity of high production modern colliery layouts is such that sometimes there maybe 200 airway branches. There are specific differences in ventilation networks between the mining methods of rooms and pillars, shortwalls and longwalls as affecting resistance losses, as well as necessary airflows and ventilating

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. The Larox Corporation develops, designs and manufactures industrial filters and is a leading technology company in its field. Larox is a full service solution provider in filtration for separating solids from liquids. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The trade name CeramecG is used to differentiate the Larox filter from the generic term.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and is normally done as a batch process in open kettles.A number of attempts have been made to establish continuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) at Port Pirie have overcome this problem by constructing a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of a novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.INTRODUCTIONLead bullion emerging from the blast furnaces at Port Pirie is at a temperature of about 1100°C and contains, among other impurities, about 1 per cent of copper.The first stage of refining is the removal of this copper by a drossing operation and in the past this was done, batchwise, by allowing the bullion to cool back in 100 ton kettles.At about 700°C, copper dross begins to separate as a crust on the surface of the kettle and this separation was allowed to continue down to about 450°C when the crust was brokenup and skimmed manually using a long handled, balanced, spoon. The dross was then smelted in a reverberatory furnace to produce a saleable copper matte and separate out lead bullion, which was returned to the drossing kettles. Treatment processes are outlined for the recovery of rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral-bearing sands on the east coast of Australia. With the exhaustion of the higher grade deposits and the imposition of more rigid specifications for the finished products, strict metallurgical control has become necessary.A description is given of the methods used by The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited to control the operation of suction dredging, of wet concentration using fans and spirals, and of dry separation using high tension and electromagnetic processes. By applying these methods a plant designed for an output of 15,000 tons of rutile per year has been tuned to produce over 20,000 tons of rutile and a corresponding amount of zircon.Details are given of (a) the method of drilling to determine the extent and grade of the ore bodies, (b) a simple electrically-timed pneumatic automatic sampler, and (c) the methods developed for the physical estimation of quartz, rutile, zircon, ilmenite and "others" in the products of plant operation.The method used for calculating the metallurgical balance and the forms used for the reporting of production results are presented.Examples are given which show the value of this detailed production and metallurgical control of plant operation.INTRODUCTIONThe organization which is now known as "The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited" (T.A.M.Co.)-a subsidiary of National Lead Company-commenced operating at Yamba, N.S.W., in 1935. A mixed natural concentrate was at first simply dried and bagged and later was upgraded by the removal of silica and the lighter heavy minerals on shaking tables and, after air-drying, was bagged for export. At that time zircon was the most wanted constituent.
