The Mt Leyshon Volcanic Complex lies 24 kilometres south-west of Charters Towers and is part of a major continental volcano-plutonic province of Permo-Carboniferous age in north-east Queensland.The volcanic complex is located on the contact between Cape River Beds of Cambrian age and the Ordovician Ravenswood Granodiorite Complex. The emplacement of the complex appears to have been structurally controlled and is at the intersection of major north-east and minor north-west trending lineaments. The gold mineralisation occurs in the form of cavity coatings, matrix replacement, disseminations, and vein and fracture fillings containing quartz, chlorite, carbonate, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena in various volcanic breccias and rhyolitic intrusives. The current published mineable ore reserves, calculated by Noranda Australia Limited, are 6.3 million tonnes of 1.8 grams per tonne gold and 4.8 grams per tonne silver. The orebody is open at depth, and in all directions except north where it abuts the granodiorite.

The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. It was shown that manganese dioxide could be used as an oxidant in acid thiourea leaching of a gold ore. Manganese dioxide could generate high redox potentials and was as effective as hydrogen peroxide in the leaching process. Results obtained under closely controlled leaching conditions confirmed that high redox potentials enabled faster dissolution of gold to be obtained but led to extremely high reagent consumptions (thiourea, acid, and manganese dioxide). Additions of sodium sulphite solution in an attempt to lower thiourea consumption by reducing formamidine disulphide back to thiourea were only marginally successful. Although thio- urea consumption was slightly decreased, the consumption of acid and manganese dioxide was substantially increased and there was no net benefit in using sulphite. Tests in which a single addition of mangan- ese dioxide was made before addition of thiourea minimized overall reagent consumption and gave only a slightly lower dissolution rate of gold. This is a promising technique for further Investigation.

IN this paper the author's intention is to convey a brief resume of the lead flotation treatment and lead flotation machines, which have replaced the May jigs and Wilfley tables at the plant of the North Broken Hill Ltd., and converted this mill into an all-flotation plant.Attention is directed to the fact that this drastic change from semi-gravity to all-flotation treatment, has been successfully accomplished without resorting to finer grinding than that previously in vogue for Wilfley table concentration, viz.: 10% to 16% plus 40-mesh I.M.M. screen.From the figures now available it is manifest that the scheme of all-flotation concentration-new as regards its successful application to Broken Hill ores is resulting in considerably higher-grade lead concentrates, and is substantially decreasing charges for labour, stores, and maintenance.The new treatment is far-reaching in its simplification of plant, as evidenced by the idle jigs and tables, and the results being obtained by North Broken Hill Ltd. may possibly influence metallurgical practice generally in Broken Hill.The outstanding features of the treatment are:(1) The coarseness, and high grade of lead concentrates obtainable.(2) The low time factor required for flotation.(3) The plant capacity, and the simplicity of its operation.(4) The low horse-power consumption.(5) The small cost for reagents used (not exceeding 3d. per ton of ore).

Mineral resource and ore reserve classification defines the risk associated with quoted resource tonnes and grades, allowing the interested party to make a judgement as to the `worth' of the resource statement. The JORC Code and Guidelines (1992) are now well entrenched as the foundation upon which gold and base metal deposits in particular are publicly reported. There are three categories of resource, namely Measured, Indicated or Inferred reflecting decreasing levels of confidence. The ore reserve, that is the economically mineable part of the resource, is classified as Proven or Probable and can only be drawn from the Measured and Indicated resource categories. As summarised by Stephenson (1995), resource/reserve classification has been an issue ever since the earliest days of mining in Australasia where, like elsewhere in the world, the industry, for a long time, lacked firm reporting guidelines. Those currently adopted in Australasia as the minimum standards for companies reporting to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) have been developed and revised since 1972 by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC). Debate is now underway in terms of adopting an international code. The Code specifically does not attempt to regulate either the classification technique nor the method of estimation of the resource/ore reserve, but rather places the responsibility for this task on a `Competent Person' whose experience will decide the appropriate approach for a given commodity/orebody. The Competent Person must be a Corporate member of either The AusIMM or AIG with five years experience `relevant to the style of mineralisation' under consideration.

The application of known pelletizing tech- nology was successful in the agglomeration of zinc concentrate into pellets of minus 6mm siz- ing using fine zinc calcine and sulphuric acid as binder. Subsequent roasting trials conducted in a 0.3 m diameter fluid bed reactor, showed that the pellets satisfactorily withstood hot physical abrasion during fluidization. Fines generation was low and the pellet calcine was hard, possessing excellent handling properties. Results of laboratory scale static pellet sinter- ing tests showed conclusively that the deterior- ation in sinter physical quality experienced with fine calcine was not apparent when the calcine was added to the mix in pellet form. Based on the results of small scale exper- imental work, a one tonne per hour pilot plant was constructed and operated. Several thousand tonne of pellets were produced-for fluid bed roasting in Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) turbulent layer (T.L.) roasters previously designed for roasting iron pyrite concentrate. Continuity of the T.L. fluid bed roasting operations was achieved when the waste heat boilers were replaced with atmospheric coolers and thus eliminated the problems of gas flow restrictions. Sinter plant trials were conducted over a period of two weeks with the addition of pellet calcine to the sinter feed. Results showed a marked improvement in sinter plant performance, and as a result of better bed permeability, increased sinter production was achieved, with- out significant deterioration in sinter quality.

We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. Therefore it is imperative that the capital outlay is gainfully employed.A "bogger" in charge of a 5/- shovel engaged unproductively is bad enough. How much worse for £150 worth of gear to be not fully productive.Figs. 1 and 2 demonstrate angles of break, and the full realization of the importance of this angle is essential to our paper. Although these Sketches are two-dimensional, we hope they will be sufficient to demonstrate our meaning. The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

In South Africa, as in many other countries, the young engineering graduate is promoted quite soon to a management position where he uses less technical skills and more people-oriented skills. In the standard undergraduate curriculum for engineering, little attention is paid to the non-technical issues of the profession. An undergraduate course in management techniques cannot be a substitute for a MBA or Masters degree in engineering management, but can at least create an awareness of the practical problems facing the engineering manager. The aim of this paper is to provide an outline of such a course structure at the University of Stellenbosch. A survey is also presented on management training in the South African and Australian mineral industries. Feedback from students and graduates indicates that the fresh graduate does not fully appreciate the value of such a course until he/she achieves a position of responsibility after two or three years. Nevertheless, the management course appears to be successful in widening the perspectives of the engineer. As explained frequently in management journals, the technically oriented person (the engineer) has a convergent thought pattern, which could be in conflict with the more divergent thought pattern of the top, personnel or marketing manager. It becomes increasingly imperative for the young minerals engineer to be externally oriented instead of the traditional internal focus of engineering. The engineer should not only be aware of environmental issues in the technical design and operation of plants, but should also understand the inter-relationship between public relations, political pressures and environmental perceptions vis-d-vis technical facts.

A steady state heat and mass balance simulation of the Western Mining Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS) flowsheet was developed within the framework of the commercial software METSIM. The KNS simulation can achieve all plant setpoints through the adjustment of controlled process inputs, and provides a useful tool for the evaluation of the current flowsheet and potential flowsheet developments The simulation model and a number of applications are discussed in this paper.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

Orebodies at Ok Tedi contain a number of different fluorine bearing minerals. Some of these minerals report to concentrate and are responsible for the presence of the penalty element, fluorine, within the concentrate. Previous analytical work has tended to examine geological samples for content, rather than determine the metallurgical behaviour of the different mineralogical species. This investigation utilised X-Ray Diffraction combined with Scanning Electron Microscope / Electron Microprobe to identify the fluorine bearing minerals in flotation test products. Seven fluorine bearing minerals were identified, viz., talc, phlogopite, amphibole (tremolite and actinolite), sphene, apatite, biotite and clay. Talc was found exclusively in the skam ore type. Phlogopite and amphiboles (tremolite and actinolite) were found to occur in both skarn and porphyry ores, while sphene, apatite, biotite and clay were found only in the porphyry ores. Of the fluorine bearing minerals observed, only talc exhibited natural hydrophobicity to any significant degree. Phlogopite and the amphibole minerals were found to be hydrophillic, whilst the remaining minerals occurred in insufficient quantities to determine the flotation behaviour. Ok Tedi copper concentrate fluorine content prior to skarn ore treatment in the mill (typically 350ppm) was previously identified as deriving from phlogopite, while talc was believed to be the source of intermittent high concentrate fluorine contents when skarn ores were treated. This paper provides supporting evidence for this belief, and reports the nature of fluorine bearing mineral flotation behaviour.

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

Degussa's PAL-system (peroxide assisted leach) has been proven to be more economical than the conventional cyanidation technique. Significant in- creases in the gold recovery have been reported, accompanied by savings in cyanide. Accelerated extraction kinetics and modified reagent demands necessitate a redesign of the conventional cyanidation plant. The South African Osprey Mine is presented as an example of a successful PAL-application. Based on the plant and laboratory data it is shown that the redesign of the flowsheet can be an important factor for the effectiveness of a metallurgical plant. In the case of the Osprey Mine, the PAL-technology all ows a modification of the current preoxidation-ClPcircuit to two separate CIL-plants to treat run-of-mine ore and old tailings dumps. A doubling of the throughput is possible without enlargement of the plant. This innovation in the field of gold extraction, the combination of the PAL-process with a redesign of the metallurgical plant, can be considered as a basis for a more profitable gold mine.

In a company's quest for financing the development of a new mine, it will make calls on stockbroking houses and banks. The choice of the best-fit broker or banker is of great importance, and in the case of the miner, this is a house that has an intimate understanding of the mining industry, particularly one that has a solid staff complement of personnel with operating mine experience at a senior level. The most important document that the company will present to support its financing request will be the Feasibility Study. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. Rothschild Australia Limited assists its client companies by supplying a detailed framework so that they will be in a position give the bank the information it needs to complete its technical `due diligence' study within a mutually agreed time. The client company will advance its position markedly if it uses well-known, reputable consultants to either complete or assist with the various aspects of the Feasibility Study. Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. Natural sphalerite associated with copper, silver, lead-zinc, tin and tungsten deposits from various world-famous mineral deposits have been studied by cathodoluminescence (CL), laser ablasion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to determine the relationship between trace element type and content and the CL properties of sphalerite. In general, sphalerite produces a spectrum of CL colour under electron bombardment that includes deep blue, turquoise, lime green, yellow-orange, orange-red and dull dark red depending on the type and concentration of trace quantities of activator ions. Sphalerite from most deposits shows a bright yellow-orange CL colour with lmax centred at 585 nm due to Mn2+ ion, and the intensity of CL is strongly dependent primarily on Fe2+ concentration. The blue emission band with lmax centred at 470 - 490 nm correlates with Ga and Ag at the Tsumeb, Horn Silver, Balmat and Kankoy mines. Colloform sphalerite from older well-known European lead-zinc deposits and late Cretaceous Kuroko-type VMS deposits of Turkey shows intense yellowish CL colour and their CL spectra are characterised by extremely broad emission bands ranging from 450 to 750 nm. These samples are characterised by low Mn (<10 ppm) and Ag (<1 ppm), and they are enriched in Tl (1 - 30 ppm) and Pb (80 - 1500 ppm). Strong green CL is produced by sphalerite from the Balmat-Edwards district. Amber, lime-green and red-orange sphalerite produced weak orange-red CL at room temperatures, with several emission bands centred at 490, 580, 630, 680, 745, with lmax at 630 nm being the strongest. These emission bands are well correlated with trace quantities of Sn, In, Cu and Mn activators. Sphalerite from the famous Ogdensburg and Franklin mines exhibited brilliant deep blue and orange CL colours and the blue CL may be related to Se. Cathodoluminescence behaviour of sphalerite serves to characterise ore types and help detect technologically important trace elements.

The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.
