The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

The share of electric arc furnace based steel production is increasing - New technologies for the production of virgin raw materials for EAF production are under development and on the market - VAI has a strong position in the field of scrap substitution technologies with their COREX«-, COREX«-DR and FINMET«-technology. In late-1998 the steel plant SALDANHA was started up successfully. This integrated compact mill is using the COREX«-technology as hot metal and a combined DR-plant as DRI production unit. Also in 1999 the BHB FINMET« plant Port Headland went on Stream.

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

The Zeehan field has yielded over 190 000 tons of lead and 26,000,000 oz of silver. Moh of the production took place between the initial discovery of silver-lead ore in 1882 and 1920, and the greatest part was extracted from fissure lodes in the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian rocks. It is demonstrated that the prosperity of the mines relied upon the silver content, which is apparently highest in these beds, particularly where spilitic rocks are associated with them. In contrast, galena occurring in orebodies emplaced in the Gordon Limestone is low in silver.Most of the workings are relatively shallow due in some cases to enrichment related to erosion surfaces.Fault zones within a complex anticlinal structure exposing the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian formations appear to have been major factors in the control of mineralization.

A Robust Chemically Enhanced Electrostatic Separation Technology Physical separation processes such as gravity, magnetic and electrostatic separations are extensively used in heavy minerals separations. Electrostatic (aka High-Tension) separation facilitated by the conductivity differences, in particular, is used for separating rutile from zircon. Although electrostatic separation is effective, it is not efficient. It suffers from separation efficacy issues owing to sensitive variables such as humidity, surface contamination, particle sizes and the temperature of the feed and other equipment parameters. The variations in the process conditions especially with humidity, temperature of the feed and the mineralogy and surface impurities can cause significant reduction in the separation resulting in production rate losses and product quality issues. Cytec Industries has developed chemical enhancement technologies for electrostatic separation for rutile -zircon separation from the heavy minerals. The major advantage of our technology is its higher separation efficacy in the first pass, substantial energy savings and most importantly its ability to do separation at room temperatures. The bolt-on nature to the existing electrostatic also an added feature that reduces the capital expenditure significantly. The separation efficiency between rutile and zircon was increased as much as 8 - 11 per cent compared to control. It is possible to extend the chemical enhancer technology to problematic feeds and other mineral systems that are not easily amenable to conventional electrostatic separation.

Addition of sodium nitrite-borax, sodium hydroxide, sodIUm carbonate, lime, or sodium silicate reduced wear of forged steel balls and cast iron slugs in wet grinding a complex zinc-lead-copper sulphide ore in laboratory ball mills. Maximum wear reductions were 27 per cent (forged steel balls) and 33 per cent (cast iron slugs) with sodium hydroxide and nitrite-borax additives respectively.Potential measurements of balls and slugs during grinding, and analysis of the data in terms of corrosion theory demonstrated that corrosive wear had been reduced or prevented by these additives. Actual per cent wear reductions were not equated to the rate of corrosive wear because of the undefined interdependence between abrasion and corrosion in wear processes. The investigation verifies that in laboratory ball mills corrosion is significant in the wear of grinding media and wear can be reduced by corrosion inhibition and pH adjustment.

This paper describes a novel system for the biological sulfate reduction (BSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) using primary sewage sludge (PSS) as carbon source in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor configuration. A UASB reactor was operated at a temperature of 35¦C and it received PSS (1875 mg/L COD) augmented with sulfate (1500 mg/L SO42-). The experimental results indicate that a high treatment efficiency was achieved at more than 90 per cent sulfate reduction at a liquid hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 13.5 h. In this study, the effects of various operational parameters were also investigated. The effect of a biomass recycle stream from the top to the bottom of the sludge bed was found to initiate rapid BSR from the bottom of the bed. Profile tests showed that effective and immediate sulfate reduction was achieved as soon as the influent entered the reactor. From these results, it can be concluded that the UASB configuration using PSS as energy source would be a viable method for the BSR of AMD.

Waste water reuse from municipal and industrial effluents is becoming increasingly important in many areas around the world. Water scarcity, local regulation and environmental impact are driving many industries like coal and copper mines to reuse the large volume of waste water they produce. For example, the Chinese coal industry generated about 4.2 billion tons of mine waste water in 2005 of which only approximately 30 per cent was reused. Coal energy represents 76.6 per cent of the total energy generated in China in 2007 and most of the coal-fired power plants are located in north-west of China, which is a water stressed area.The selection of mine waste water treatment process is challenging as the effluents typically contains high levels of organic compounds and salinity and their composition can vary significantly. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for mine waste water treatment and reuse.In this paper, an overview of the design and performance of ultrafiltration and RO membranes applied for reuse of mine waste water are discussed. A study was carried out in two effluents treatment plants treating copper and coal mine waste water, which are located in Chile and China respectively. The following topics will be discussed to demonstrate the performance of an integrated membrane system in mine waste water reuse: The main challenges from copper mine waste water treatment: high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD); high level of total suspended solids (TSS); high salinity; high concentration of silica, sulfate, iron and other contaminants; and fluctuation of raw water quality. The main challenges from coal mine waste water treatment: high level of total dissolved solids, and waste water quality fluctuation. Design parameters for waste water treatment systems: Selection of pretreatment for dual-membrane system in the copper mine: Clarifier with coagulation and flocculation to remove high TSS; Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove non-settling solids; Media filtration to handle fine solids and particulate organics; Activated Carbon filters (ACF) to remove dissolved organics, colour and odours. Selection of UF and RO membranes and specific design of their recovery, flux, chemical dosage and cleaning regimes. Finally, the performance of UF and RO, including the main fouling factors and efficient cleaning procedures, will be presented and compared to the design parameters to demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the selected integrated membrane systems in each case.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

The overburden slusher (OS) is proposed as a stripping tool that is expected to find application in overburden stripping operations including open cut coal and oil shale mines. OS is expected to combat the effects of increasing depth on the productivity of conventional dragline stripping.Although previously developed stripping techniques have included the use of drag scrapers the OS is sufficiently different as to constitute a new stripping method.A study undertaken at the University of Queensland during 1985 is believed to be the first major study on the use of the OS and preliminary economic results are very encouraging. It appears that the OS has the capacity to remove overburden at a cheaper unit cost than the equivalent powered dragline stripping machine at any comparable depth of overburden. The OS is not adversely affected by increasing stripping depth to the same extent as a dragline. In addition, the action of the OS machine allows for the lowering of spoil face angles, thereby reducing spoil slope stability problems encountered in deep open cut strip mines.

The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. It is true that Honman offered convincing evidence of the sedimentary origin of the jaspers...

The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

Currently raw brown coal is fired in the Latrotx; 'ahcc th,iki~, Lanying with it two major penalties, (a) boiler efficiency of 65 - 70 per cent (in terms of GCV), (b) much higher boiler cost than for black coal. Drying the coal, in energy-efficient, and cost-efficient manner, opens the way to efficiencies of order 88 per cent and enables the lower cost black coal type boilers to be used. With the higher boiler efficiency goes much higher combustion temperatures and the effect of this on radiative heat transfer is a major factor in reducing boiler cost. In a fluidised-bed combustor the temperature is controlled to 800C - 900C. In a pulverised fuel combustor higher temperatures are however achieved and can increase boiler fouling due to the salt content of the coal. This is a problem which needs to be solved. Victoria has the prospect of lifting efficiency from 28/29 per cent to 35 per cent, of reducing carbon dioxide output correspondingly and reducing cost of power stations. So far as gasification is concerned, efficient removal of liquid water from the coal is important to the overall efficiency.

The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. In Britain, a Scottish firm developed a rubber belt conveyor in which full advantage was taken of the high tensile features of wire rope, without embodying or moulding the wire rope into the rubber belt, so that the two wire ropes and the rubber...

Two types of Mt Tom Price hematite iron ore from Hamersley Iron P/L were tested using a Humboldt Wedag Jones P40 wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The parameters tested were magnetic intensity (7000, 9000 and 11 000 Gauss), groove plate type (8R and 12R) and gap width (2.5 and 1.8 mm). It was found that at 9000 gauss magnetic intensity, reasonably high-grade and recovery in the concentrate were obtained. At 2.5 mm plate gap width, the 12R groove plate performed slightly better than the 8R groove plate. Further testwork is recommended to optimise the magnetic intensity, feed flowrate and pulp density, wash water pressure and flowrate with 12R and 8R groove plates at 2.5 mm gap width.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.
