Xstrata Copper is extending the Ernest Henry Mine with a 6 Mtpa sub-level cave (SLC) mine being constructed under the pit. The SLC mine will maintain the EHM operation until 2024 after the pit is completed in August 2011. In February 2008, the first cut of the new underground mine at EHM was fired with the start of an exploration decline. Since then Xstrata Copper has continued the development and construction of a SLC mine. During this process a number of challenges arose, some of which had not been anticipated in the planning stages, that in turn has been addressed to ensure the development continued. The challenges have been many and varied and range from setting up the portal area and commencing the exploration decline development in an active large open pit, to management of underground water. Further challenges were presented by the effects of the GFC on investment recommendations, with the scale of the mine varying from a shaft mine to a smaller scale trucking only mine in mid-2009 and back to the full shaft mine in late 2009. The effect was the parallel development of two separate mining scenarios, with the challenge of maintaining commonality for as long as possible to keep both options alive until the final board approval was obtained. In 2010 the RSPT caused further impacts. This paper will describe the current progress of mine development as well as how the various challenges have been met and some key lessons learnt from these experiences.

The Cooljarloo North Mine has been shaped not only by operational and processing challenges, but by climatic and economic factors. This paper outlines some of these challenges and discusses how the operating strategy has been altered over time to mitigate the impacts.Since commissioning the wet concentrator in 1999, there have been many typical operational challenges to maximising valuable heavy mineral (VHM) recovery. These include: varying in pit feed grades, different slimes types and volumes, sizing extremes between VHM and trash minerals and decreased equipment reliability handling rocky ore. These issues were successfully mitigated by: in pit extraction strategies, upgrade of the de-sliming circuit, thickener modifications and flocculent changes, installing upgraded and additional spiral capacity, and various Feed Preparation Plant screening initiatives. Combined with the ingenuity, persistence and patience of the operating team, VHM recovery >95 per cent has been achieved.However, typical processing challenges have not been the only hurdles. Reduced rainfall and water availability has necessitated the strategic co-disposal of tailings and slime to increase the speed of water recovery: groundwater abstraction and water storage strategies have also been altered. With an observed reduction in the speed and magnitude of groundwater recharge, overburden backfill scheduling has become a priority mine planning function.Combined with the above challenges, the prevailing foreign exchange rate and mineral product prices have impacted profitability. At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, major changes to the operating strategy were made to maintain a viable dry mining operation in 2010. Working with the mining contractor the existing scraper and semi-fixed Feed Preparation Plant set up was replaced with a movable in pit dozer trap facility. The end result of changes to the mining method and primary screening was a ten per cent reduction in unit costs. This article will elaborate on some of the above mentioned challenges and successes achieved over the past ten years of operating the Cooljarloo North Mine.

The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-west of Adelaide in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a design capacity of 8 Mtpa. The flotation circuit includes six rougher cells, an IsaMill for regrinding the rougher concentrate and a Jameson cell preceding the three stage conventional cell cleaner circuit.Since its commissioning, the Prominent Hill flotation circuit has been the focus of a series of projects aimed at continual performance improvement. This has been achieved by a systematic approach of project identification, evaluation and implementation which has led to a progressive improvement in flotation performance. Innovations that have been successfully implemented include aspects of cell design and operation, and reagent suite optimisation.Improvements to the mechanical cells initially focused on the installation of a modified rotor-stator design in the rougher circuit, as recommended by Outotec. Isolated cells were fitted with this technology and proven to provide a benefit for copper recovery before the design was trialled in subsequent cells along the bank. Based on this success, further modifications were made to other aspects of the rougher and cleaner cells.Laboratory trials conducted at Prominent Hill involve a screening process identifying potential reagents from a list of products, which are then rigorously tested in the laboratory before one is selected for trial in the concentrator. Where these reagents have demonstrated a statistical improvement in performance they have typically been incorporated permanently into the flotation circuit. Currently there are large reserves of good quality iron ore near to existing infrastructure that are not being developed because the phosphorous levels are above acceptable market specifications. Since the high phosphorous content is considered to be mainly associated with the goethite fractions of the ore, attempts were made to leach the phosphorous from the ore after a heat treatment to dehydroxylate the goethite. Heating the ore and leaching with 40 g/L NaOH lowered the phosphorous levels from 0.145 wt per cent P to 0.075 wt per cent P or lower, but a heating temperature over 800¦C was required to achieve this reduction in phosphorous levels. However, when sodium hydroxide was added to the iron ore before the heat treatment, similar phosphorous removal was achieved with a heating temperature of 300 - 350¦C. It was considered that dehydroxylation of the goethite in the presence of the hydroxide makes the phosphorous available for removal with a water leach. As well, 50 per cent of the silica and 60 per cent of the alumina in the ore were also removed in the leach, but some sodium remained in the leach product. Further work is required to remove the residual sodium to produce a marketable product.

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Future work will focus on the application of mineralogy in interpreting the behaviour of mine waste under different static test conditions with a view to assessing their applicability and reliability in estimating potential acid generating characteristics of gold tailings.CITATION:Dyantyi, N, Becker, M, Broadhurst, J L, Harrison, S T L and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. Acidic reductive leaching is one of the best known and most widely employed chemical processes for beneficiating minerals of industrial interest. Conventional acidic leaching with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), employed to bleach industrial minerals used in the production of ceramics, glassware, paper etc, does not always allow products of high quality to be obtained. In the work reported here two reducing agents, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid, have been employed in a medium acidified by means of sulphuric acid. Continuous systematic tests have been performed on a kaolin sample containing 0.8 per cent Fe2O3, adopting various operating parameters such as, leaching time, temperature and reagent concentration. In each case the total quantity of bi- and trivalent iron dissolved was ascertained. Removal of 80 per cent and 100 per cent of iron with ascorbic and oxalic acid respectively was obtained, while less than one per cent of iron was dissolved in the presence of sulphuric acid only. Products having a very good degree of whiteness (92 - 94 per cent) were obtained, whereas with sodium dithionite the degree of whiteness was in the 85 to 88 per cent range. The best conditions identified were applied to a sample of quartz for the removal of ferric impurities.

Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

Profitability today depends upon efficient operations, which can only be achieved through precise and dependable con-trol of each process unit comprising thetotal plant.Modern process control systems utilise distributed architecture with microprocessor-based controllers, data acquisition devices and VDU operator stations. Honeywell intro-duced this control technology in 1975 with the "Total Distributed Control" System. Now, building on the proven performance and re-liability inherent in TDC hiway modules, Honeywell has extended the TDC system to inte-grate both management information and control by providing distributed processing modules on the new TDC 3000 Local Control Network (LCN).

Fifteen samples 'of clays and shales from the Adelaide area were selected from a total of 84 as representing material of possible value for the manufacture of light-weight aggregate. A detailed examination of the bloating. characteristics of these revealed four likely to be suitable. for expansion.' in a rotary kiln. One of these, a Tapley. Hill shale., was-fired in an 8 in. diameter rotary kiln, but con-tinuous bloating without ring formation in the kiln was not achieved. Steam,,-oxygen,, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide have been, suggested. as the agents of bloating. An examina-tion of .. the evidence : `leads to the conclusion that carbon dioxide derived from. carbonate minerals is likely to be the principal bloating agent. Attempts to bloat clays by the addition of mica were.not successful.

The difficulty of successfully imple menting a landscape policy is almost incom- prehensible. Landscape design is recognised as an essential component in the integration of engineering and architectural projects into the landscape, but the factors which prevent the achievement of a successful result are rarely recognised or assessed. In many cases these prohibiting factors are due to a lack of understanding of the effect of major planning decisions on the existing landscape, the importance of the landscape plan and the significance of appro- priate specified techniques to prevent un- necessary damage and to ensure retention of existing vegetation in a healthy condition. The role of the landscape architect in incorporating new land uses into the landscape provides the background against which factors which inhibit policy achievement can be con- sidered.

Warrego copper ore characteristically contains 0.05-0.2% bismuth, which on upgrading produces a concentrate of approximately 1.3% bismuth. Early smelting of this concentrate (1973) was accomplished in a flash furnace (eliminating 92% of the bismuth in the con- centrate) and Top Blown Rotary Convertors (eliminating 85% of the bismuth in the matte). However 1.3% bismuth was considered the max- imLun bismuth level that could be treated. Geological evidence indicated that the bismuth level in~the copper ore would increase and that the bismuth level in the Warrego ore would be 0.3-0.7% bismuth. Treating these ores would produce a copper concentrate with bismuth levels far in excess of those accept- able to the smelter and still produce low bismuth content blister (limit 0.03% bismuth).

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.
