The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. The Melbourne Metro project has evolved from the Victorian Transport Plan. MM1 is the second major phase of the proposed separation of Melbourne’s radial railway system, creating a line that will operate independently across the metropolitan region. The central section will run beneath the inner suburbs and the central city. The initial project comprises nearly 8 km of twin bore tunnels, three cavern stations and two cut and cover stations, as well as a dive structure and connections with the existing rail system. This paper describes the development of the geological model, a modification of the rock mass classification system derived during the EastLink project and the influence of the geology on the design of the tunnels and stations for the Department of Transport’s business case.The majority of the tunnelling will be in the siltstone and sandstone bedrock. This material has been extensively folded, sheared and intersected by igneous intrusions. A revised rock mass classification system has been developed for the Melbourne Formation to assist in identifying the important engineering properties of the rock and to rationalise the support types required.The Metro’s tunnel alignment crosses the Yarra Delta deposits in the lower reaches of the Moonee Ponds Creek and again at the Yarra itself near Princes Bridge. These deposits vary in extent and thickness over very short distances. The investigation of these materials has been carried out using conventional drilling techniques in conjunction with sonic drilling methods.Over the central section of the Metro, the positions of the new station are determined largely by transport planning requirements and urban development opportunities. However, the stations, and the tunnels, have been the subject of studies, optimising exercises, and selection processes to arrive at the concept design. This paper describes the influence of the varied geology on the development of the design, and the identification and management of the risks in tunnelling under the centre of Melbourne.

This paper addresses, in particular, the influence of winding depth on the selection of head ropes for Koepe winders. Because this is just one aspect of winder design that affects the operational safety of the winding system, the paper starts by considering all the issues governing the life and safety of the winding ropes. Regulations from a variety of countries are reviewed and comparisons of the legislated rope factors of safety and their variation with winding depth are made. This is followed by a discussion of the typical observed mode of in-service deterioration of Koepe head ropes. This mode of deterioration is due to fatigue and is influenced by the load range occurring in the ropes. Parameters contributing to load range are discussed and the influence of winding depth is highlighted. Lessons learned from early experience with very deep Koepe winders in South Africa are recalled. Predictions of load range as a function of depth are made, from which general rope life predictions are made for ropes selected by conventional national factor of safety requirements. This is illustrated in graphs comparing rope life as a function of depth. Typically a reducing life with depth is predicted. A rope selection strategy is advocated, which is based on achieving a constant rope life irrespective of the depth of wind. A new factor of safety (or rope design factor) equation is prepared that has the trend of increasing with depth. This proposed equation is compared with other published proposals that promote an increasing rope factor of safety with depth. It is shown that smoother winder drive controls enhance winding rope life and this improvement is quantified. The paper concludes by pointing out the consistency in predicted and observed life of winding ropes selected in accordance with legislated factor of safety approaches. It recommends the adoption of a new rope design factor equation for rope selection, to be used in conjunction with appropriate codes of practice for winding rope condition assessment and for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and testing of Koepe winders. The new rope design factor equation approaches a limiting economic depth of wind at shallower depths than the existing Koepe factor of safety approaches. However these older approaches æbuild-inÆ a reducing rope life with depth. The new rope design factor is therefore a more consistent way to select Koepe ropes and to evaluate economic trade-offs between Koepe and conventional double-drum or Blair winding systems.

The in situ testing of mine ventilation fan systems has been a contentious issue for many years. Site testing was generally undertaken by adapting standards that were developed for the laboratory testing of fans using standardised airways. The deficiencies inherent in this practice have been widely recognised by informed practitioners, and this led to the first stand-alone document specifically intended for the in situ testing of large fans (ISO 5802:2001 Industrial fans - Performance testing in situ).This paper describes the structure of the International Standards organisation and the processes that are followed in the course of preparing such a standard.The application of ISO 5802:2001 is briefly outlined together with how test data is assessed for compliance with the suppliers guarantee. "The Braemar Iron Formation is atypical ore when compared to the current magnetite ores being processed. In attempting to process and economically recover the vast quantities of iron ore stored within the Braemar Iron Formation, æshifting the paradigmÆ is required. The formation has a low Davis tube recovery (DTR) grade of 15 - 20 per cent, which is much lower than magnetite ores processed in Australia. Despite this, by thoroughly testing and understanding the ore characteristics, it is found that the Braemar ores have significant advantages to processing than the harder banded iron formation (BIF) and taconite resources.The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. The grade was low and the Pilbara region discovery lead to the development of high-grade direct shipping hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (CAP) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. Shifting the paradigm away from grade the advantages of processing this ore are achieved by having an extremely low waste to ore ratio, lower Bond work index, lower abrasion levels and high-grade magnetite concentrates with little impurities other than silica. While developing the Hawsons Iron Project (HIP) it became more apparent that a positive business case is achievable when the following factors are exploited: very large resource - the resource is contained within one pit the rock fractures easily along grain boundaries - ideal for cheap impact crushing of the ore the ore is extremely soft, with a Bond work index of 6.3 - 8.0 kWh/t all major infrastructure required is readily available - rail, power, access and port the mine is in close proximity to Broken Hill - rich mining history and skill set available the resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.Shifting the paradigm by selecting equipment suitable for processing soft ores and not hard BIF or taconite ores and taking locality and available infrastructure into account may change the way people approach new low-grade resources in future.CITATION:Koenig, R L and Broekman, K T, 2013. The mining sector, a notably energy-intensive industry worldwide, is a major consumer of fossil fuels, leading to significant carbon emissions globally. The move towards electrification, coupled with advancements in battery technology, has redirected focus from traditional diesel-powered solutions to battery-powered alternatives. This paper introduces a novel mining haulage system, termed the Battery Trolley system, and examines its theoretical foundations, configurations, and operational processes. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the system’s characteristics and limitations. Through a hypothetical road simulation, the study analyses various battery mining trucks, calculating energy consumption based on force parameters and tailoring battery sizes to contemporary materials and technology. When assessing various battery truck alternatives—considering aspects such as battery size, effective payload, duty cycle, energy efficiency, productivity, and single-shift production—a range of performance outcomes and characters become apparent within the mining context. The findings indicate that Battery Trolley configurations, requiring smaller battery capacities, entail lesser compromises on effective payload. Consequently, these configurations achieve a higher duty cycle, reduced energy consumption per tonne, heightened productivity, and enhanced singleshift production capabilities compared to Battery-only alternatives. The comparative analysis of Battery Trolley with stationary charging (BT-S) and Battery Trolley – dynamic charging (BT-D) underlines that battery Trolley systems are capable of overcoming the challenges associated with battery size, thus successfully fulfilling the production demands of large truck applications in mining. This positions Battery Trolley systems as a more advantageous option for the decarbonisation of mining fleets, underscoring their potential in contributing to the sector’s sustainable evolution.

"Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. The mining industry is facing a variety of geological, technological and social challenges. Future deposits show a general tendency towards increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. One promising approach to deal with low-grade ores is bioleaching in the form of heap and dump operations. Bioleaching is already a state-of-the-art technique, especially for the extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The next step in the development of this technology will be its application as an in situ technology. First attempts to adapt this technology in underground mining in the form of stoping and block caving have already been made. Both methods have to be carried out adjacent to conventional mining operations and therefore require much effort regarding drift development as well as extraction and transport. The adaption of bioleaching as a borehole mining method is the next step to establish an innovative in situ technique to meet future challenges.The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the Biohydrometallurgical Centre for Strategic Elements (BHMZ) to foster interdisciplinary research along the whole biohydrometallurgical process chain. In general, 13 different university institutes and several associated groups with about 30 PhD students are mainly focusing on the extraction of indium and germanium from deposits, tailings and recycling material. One of the core projects within the BHMZ is the design and implementation of an underground in situ bioleaching testing facility.This paper demonstrates the potential of in situ bioleaching under technological aspects. Adsorption Behaviours of Humic Substances onto Iron Ore Particle Surface Humic substances extracted from lignite mainly consist of fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA), which have been successfully used as good composite binders for iron ore pellets in laboratory tests and industrial production. However, there exists a general lack of understanding of the interaction between humic substances and iron ore particles surfaces. In this research, by means of zeta potential measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum, colorimetric method and Environmental Scanning Electron Micrograph (ESEM) imaging, the adsorption behaviours of FA and HA onto the surfaces of iron ore particles are investigated. The zeta potential results indicate that adsorption of FA on the iron ore particles can be characterised by specific and electrostatic interactions, while adsorption of HA is by electrostatic and chemical adsorption interactions. FTIR spectrum results show that adsorption force of FA on the iron ore particle surfaces is stronger than that of HA. From results of colorimetric method, compared with HA, adsorption amount and adsorption rate of FA is more and faster, respectively. FA molecule presents on the surface of magnetite in the shape of an araneose network structure according to the ESEM images, while HA molecule appears on the surface of magnetite in the form of small flocs or microclusters. Humic substances are effective to iron ore pelletisation. Comparsion of agglomeration results show that the different mechanisms of adsorption result in varied agglomeration behaviours. Theses findings above would be beneficial to the implications of composite binder for agglomeration.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

Gravity gold circuits have an important part in reducing operating costs and maximising recovery in modern gold plants where coarse gold is present in the ore body. The design and selection of equipment has a vital part in the overall effectiveness of the gravity gold circuit. There are a number of associated factors that need to be taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable equipment for gravity gold circuits including occupational health and safety, security and labour requirements. This paper is a case study that outlines the validation behind the design, selection of equipment and subsequent benefits of the recent upgrade of the gravity circuit at the Marvel Loch gold mine with the main component to the upgrade being the installation of a Consep Acacia Reactor. Since the upgrade there has been a significant increase in gravity recovery, which has reduced the amount of gold reporting to the leaching circuit therefore reducing reagent consumption and overall operating costs. There has been an increase in overall gold recovery and therefore increased gold production. The benefits to occupational health and safety include the removal of toxic gases being released in the gold room during the previous practice of gold concentrate calcination and the removal of the arsenic and nickel from the gold doré, which poses a risk during refining. Manual handling and security has improved as there is no physical contact with gold concentrates during the automated process using the Acacia reactor. The total time for gold room personnel working in the gold room has also reduced from around six hours per day to less than one hour per day.With the continuing development of low grade gold deposits, there will be an increase in demand for low capital, high recovery gravity gold circuits that can significantly increase overall production while reducing operating costs.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rock burst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in Australian underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanised installation of a chain-link mesh as trialled at Golden Grove, a base metals underground mine in Western Australia. A purpose-built mechanised roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilising the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement.A number of operational benefits have been identified during the trial, the main two being:•improved safety of underground personnel due to the reduced amount of manual handling, and•increased productivity due to the decreased cycle time (the trial suggests a 40 - 50 per cent reduction in time over the weld mesh installation method).Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rock burst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognised during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

The development of lithium-ion batteries, coupled with the global trend towards electrification of transportation, has led to a dramatic increase in the demand for lithium. The production of lithium from hard rock ores is increasing, and flotation has proved to be an effective means for the beneficiation of many pegmatitic lithium ores. Clariant Mining Solutions has developed a range of novel collectors for the flotation of spodumene and other lithium ores, and this paper presents examples of some of the most recent developments. Fatty acids are the typical collectors for lithium flotation, however the grade and recovery achieved with these collectors is often below the desired level. There are also some significant drawbacks associated with the use of fatty acid collectors, such as the formation of calcium soaps which give rise to filtration problems and the need for acid washing. Several FLOTINOR products have been developed as alternatives to fatty acids. These products offer equivalent or better metallurgical performance at significantly lower dosages than fatty acids. This offers benefits to the flotation circuit as well as potentially reducing the issues associated with downstream processing of the concentrate.

The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

"The Corridor Sands deposit is situated approximately 190 km north east of Maputo, Mozambique adjacent to the paleo-mouth of the Limpopo River. This deposit is one of the worldÆs largest known economically viable resource of titanium, accounting for approximately one third of the global resource. As part of the pre-feasibility and feasibility study for development of the Corridor Sands project, various geological and geotechnical investigations were undertaken, selected results of which are presented in this paper. These investigations have enabled a detailed understanding of the material characteristics of the orebody as well as the tailings materials, such as the fines, to be developed. These material characteristics have had a significant impact on the selection of the mining and disposal methods currently being implemented."
