Why Rehabilitate? Legislative Requirement Land rehabilitation is a condition of resource consents for mining. Clause 17 (1) of the Resource Management Act 1991 (duty to avoid, remedy, or mitigate adverse effects) provides the legislative basis for local authorities to impose resource consent conditions requiring land to be rehabilitated to approved uses during and after mining.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and South Western Coalfields.The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal.Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each seam.The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Seam in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin collieries.A satisfactory correlation is achieved between vitrinite content and coke stability and hardness, enabling prediction of coke strength for Southern Coalfield coals.The use of vitrinite reflectance, as an indicator of rank, in addition to type to predict coke strengths is at present hampered by lack of data, particularly in the South Western Coalfield. Nevertheless, data available at present allow the use of both variables and give better correlations with coke strengths than type alone.A spread of comprehensive data across both coalfields will enable advance assessment of cokes produced from coals having known rank and type. Blending to a ranktype specification for optimum coke strengths would allow the best use of the coal reserves of the coalfields.

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

Geochemical data on Australian granites and pegmatites, and the mineral components of these rocks, are compared with that obtained in similar studies in the U.S.S.R. and elsewhere.The geochemical character of tin granites and the trace chemistry of their component minerals, particularly biotites, have some significance as ore guides in prospecting for tin.The primary geochemical dispersion of tin can be readily tested both in the laboratory and field by colourimetric methods, after volatilization with ammonium iodide, using modifications of the method described by Wood (1958).Secondary dispersions of tin in residual soils or alluvia can likewise be readly tested by rapid colourimetric methods in the field, but simple hydraulic methods, handling larger sample volumes, give reliable outlines of dispersion patterns.INTRODUCTIONThe search for tin ores, whether lode or placer in type, is usually directed on genetic grounds to country within or adjoining acid intrusives.A long established means of prospecting is to test samples for cassiterite by panning or other hydraulic separation.These methods can be used on crushed lode material or the natural materials from placers.With the advent of new techniques for extraction and for colourimetric analysis for tin (Wood, 1958 and Ross and White, 1961) a means is available for rapid analysis of materials not susceptible to quantitative testing by hydraulic methods because of the fine sizings of cassiterite or the occurrence of tin structurally held in minerals. The new methods thus opened up the field of tin prospecting by extending the search for ore guides to genetically associated rocks and minerals, wall ror-ks of veins and a wider range of superficial deposits.

The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the clean-up procedure adopted at the treatment plant of Paringa Mining & Exploration Co. Ltd. at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.A clean-up is carried out at the end of each four-weekly period, and all figures subsequently quoted are taken from a summary of the results of the eight periods ending 8th April, 1941.STRAKING AND AMALGAMATIONOf the total gold won 22· 77 per cent. is recovered by straking and amalgamation.The discharges of both the primary and secondary ball mills are pumped over a common set of five ten feet long by three feet wide straking tables, set at an angle of 10 degrees, before passing to the 14 ft. diameter by 30 ft. by 8 ft. Dorr bowl classifier.This classifier is in closed circuit with both of the ball mills, hence the whole of the circulating load of the fine grinding circuit, which approximates to 800 per cent., is required to pass over the straking tables. For convenience in handling, corduroy cloths are used in lengths of 5 feet, and are picked up and replaced by clean cloths at four-hourly intervals. The avaHable straking area provided is, therefore, 900 square feet, or approximately 3·30 square feet per original ton per 24 hours. The density of the pulp passing over the tables is about 54 per cent. solids, the area provided per ton of pulp per 24 hours being approximately o· 2() square feet. Washing of the corduroy cloths is carried out on the day shift only, about 800 lb. of strake concentrate being obtained daily.This concentrate is sluiced from the washing trough on the elevated straking floor to the 4 ft. by 2 ft. diameter amalgamating barrel located in the gold room below.The barrel is of standard design and is rotated at 25 r.p.m. It is charged each day at 4 p.m., and grinding of the strake concentrate at approximately 70 per cent. solids is continued until 8 a.m. the following day. The barrel is then stopped, and the contents generously diluted with water, and after a few minutes rotation some of the slime is carefully poured off through the small discharge hole. This dilution and decantation is repeated until a good deal of the valueless slime has been removed.A further quantity of strake concentrate is then charged to the barrel, which is allowed a further 16 hours grinding period. After again diluting and decanting, approximately 25 lb. of mercury and 15 lb. of lime are added to the charge, which is then given an amalgamation period of 2 hours before cleaning up.By the process of grinding, diluting and removal of slime by decanting...

A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. (This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. An extensive conveyor system thus became necessary unless a new mill was built near the shaft. The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. Oceanic subduction-related volcanic frontal arcs extend over 20 000 km within the western Pacific basin and over 21 500 km worldwide, yet they remain largely unexplored with respect to active seafloor mineralization. Systematic exploration of 26 major submarine volcanoes along ~840 km of the Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand has documented ten (39 per cent) as being hydrothermally active. This frequency of venting is comparable to that on slow-to-moderate rate spreading mid-ocean ridges, which comprise ~80 per cent of the 60 000 km-long global system of spreading centers. The chemistry of fluids discharged from the Kermadec arc volcanoes is moderated by magmatic components in both the gaseous (CO2 + SO2-H2S) and liquid (Fe) phases at very high concentration.The high frequency of venting coupled with chemically rich discharge discovered during this first systematic survey of any arc system forecasts submarine arcs as being important sources of chemicals to the oceans and as potentially lucrative exploration sites for seafloor mineralization. The exploration protocols developed during these surveys include bathymetric mapping of mostly unknown volcanic edifices, followed by detailed water column profiling and sampling to detect and characterize volcanic fluid emission signatures. These procedures are being refined as the survey progresses, both for efficiency and as direct seafloor observations become available for predictive application of water column plume information to guide seafloor mineral exploration.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Fines and unnecessarily small rock fragments are created by as many as four identifiable breakage mechanisms which operate close to the charged section or sections of the blasthole. The peak blasthole pressure (Pb) should not exceed that value at which the rock starts to fail in compression. Excessive Pb values can be prevented by carefully selecting:1. the composition, density and/or diameter of the charge, and2. the initiation/priming system.The percentage of fines increases with:1. increases in the charge diameter:blasthole diameter ratio, burden distance, blasthole diameter, effective sub-drilling and size of blast, and2. decreases in blasthole spacing, stemming height and the length:width ratio of the blast block.Decked charges tend to reduce the percentage of fines.Excessive fragmentation is more evident in buffer blasting and sinking cut shots than in blasts fired to a clean free face. Initiation sequences which give effective burdens considerably less than drilled burdens encourage the minimization of fines, as does an inter-row delay time which promotes good progressive relief of burden.The wastage of explosive energy in creating fines is most pronounced where fully-coupled, energetic charges are fired in weak and/or highly porous rocks. This is especially so where forward movement of the strata is impeded by buffer rock, excessive burden distances and/or inadequate inter-row delay times.
