This paper is a demonstration of the techniques developed during an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded research project aimed to develop aids, principally computer based, to assist mine personnel to more efficiently manage significant incidents in coal mines. These aids include software to aid in the location of the incident, electronic information storage and retrieval, online site emergency response manuals and software to aid in decision-making.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. INTRODUCTION Firedamp drainage applications are incr- easing world wide as mining engineers strive for improved safety and security, and further concentration of coal output. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. As a result, dependence on surface extraction plants is increasing. This paper deals with som requirements and applications of such installations. I. Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques. With export and to less extent local market unpredictability, it is vital to produce mine establishment times to allow advantage to be taken of market upswings and there is great need for research and improvement of mine access construction as the major aspect of establish- ment.

The Golden Mile, which has been mined continuously for the past 100 years by both underground and more recently open pit methods, occupies an area of 1.2 km by 4 km adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia (Figure 1). Large-scale open pit mining at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operations is currently extracting 7.8 million tonnes of oxide and sulphide ore for a total production of 522 000 oz per annum. The effectiveness of grade estimation techniques at KCGM has been examined with reference to existing 10 m bench sample data from all operating areas within the Eastern Lode System of the Main and North pits. The aim of the study was to recommend practical parameters for grade control estimation. The review included comprehensive variography and comparison of nonparametric estimation methods (Joumel, 1983) such as indicator kriging and probability kriging with ordinary kriging, leading to the development of improved grade control parameters and procedures for both daily quality control and short term mine planning. This paper reviews the geological, statistical, geostatistical, mining and modelling features studied in order to present KCGM's Mining Department with recommendations for improving grade control.

The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended. Whilst the fire scenarios were based on actual case studies, they have been disguised for this paper.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

The paper presents a new integrated system for control of concentration processes. The system is based on cluster-based modelling taking the ore quality into account and a new on-line particle size analyser capable also for reliable measuring of particle size distribution of concentrate. A metallurgical precontrol audit was performed at the Hitura concentrator in order to design the control strategy of the integrated grinding and flotation control. A new analyser PSI-200, was used to the measurement and control of the distribution of nickel in the total particle size range. An expert control system using the cluster model together with a new control strategy for decision of necessary control actions is outlined. The method has been tested to real data from mineral processes. The results are in good correspondence with empirical process knowledge. High-Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is one of the efficient methods for increasing the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate for pellet feed production. HPGR grinding mechanism implies that material should compressed between the two rolls, therefore layer of material must be able to resist required pressure for achieving suitable grinding conditions. In this study, by doing SSA increasing tests with pilot HPGR, the effects of silica reduction on SSA increasing results were investigated. For this purpose, HPGR tests were performed on an Iranian magnetite concentrate before and after reverse flotation silica reduction tests. Based on the laboratory test results, silicates have been concentrated in two fraction sizes of the sample comprises coarser than 150 microns in form of quartz and finer than 7 microns in form of iron silicates. These silicates have been effected on reduction of concentrate bed pressure resistance by creating a pasty and sticky mud. In this condition, HPGR cannot work properly and operation results are not acceptable. According to flotation silica reduction tests, with 90 per cent weight recovery, concentrate Fe grade is increased from 67.8 per cent to 69.5 per cent and SiO2 content is reduced from 1.98 per cent to 0.9 per cent and especially for lower than 7 microns fraction size, as a critical fraction, SiO2 content decreased from 4.45 per cent to 2.35 per cent. HPGR tests were performed on 8 per cent moisture in 4 N/mm2 specific force and according to the results after silica reduction HPGR operation conditions are optimised. Results showed that the working gap increased from 7 to 10.5 mm and specific throughput of material raised from 180 ts/hm3 to 250 ts/hm3 , and SSA increased by 300 cm2 /gr in a single pass.

A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the hightemperature cracking of crude oils. This paper deals with production process and basic properties of this binder as well as new applications in the field of iron ore pelletizing.

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.

IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. On this account some portions of the subject have obviously received but scanty attention in order that others may be rather more fully dealt with; for instance, figures referring to the accuracy of various methods of valuing alluvial deposits, particulars of efficiencies, and water duties on both overburden and drift; also, the system of recording water distribution, &c.The plans of the tin-streaming shed, sluice and feed·race, and overburden tail-race represent types of the most modern design.The principal alluvial deposits being worked at the present time are situated either in the ancient or modern bed of the Ringarooma river or its tributaries. This river flowed in a north-easterly direction, receiving numerous tributaries on either bank, and finally emptying into Boobyalla harbour. The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.
