Determination of cut-off grade?strategy is one of the most important stages of open pit mine planning and design. It is the parameter directly influencing the financial, technical, economic, legal, environmental, social and political issues in relation to mining operation. Choosing the optimum cut-off grade strategy that maximises the economic outcome has been a major topic of research workers for nearly one century. Many researchers have contributed in devising methods and algorithms, such as dynamic programming, linear programming, optimal control and so on for various aspects of its determination. In this paper, a non-linear mathematical programming for cut-off grade strategy optimisation is presented, considering the three main stages of mining operation introduced by K F Lane. In this model maximisation of net present value of mining operation, under the three constraints of mining stagesÆ capacities, considered as the optimisation criteria. Due to the discrete representation of the mining resource, the proposed non-linear formulation is approximated by a non-linear signomial geometric programming. According to non-convexity and the complexity of the proposed model, an augmented Lagrangian genetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cut-off grade strategy under varying and fixed price circumstances. To validate the proposed non-linear model efficiency, the results were compared with the results obtained by the K F Lane methodology. It was found that the proposed non-linear model works efficiently in the determination of cut-off grade strategy. According to the simplicity of the structure of non-linear programming modelling in comparison with dynamic programming it is hoped that, further development of this model would certainly provide the ability of considering managerial and technical flexibilities as well as incorporating more real mining conditions in the determination of cut-off grade strategy optimisation.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

"One of the major environmental impacts of mining is the destruction of habitat. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic Australian marsupial that has been severely affected by land clearing and its decline is continuing. This has placed pressure upon mining companies and government agencies to ensure koalas are managed throughout the life-of-mines - from land clearing through to rehabilitation of post-mining landscapes. This paper reports on the æKoala VentureÆ research partnership between The University of Queensland and Rio Tinto. As part of the Koala Venture program we examined koala use of two types of restored environments: rehabilitated mined land (20 sites) natural regrowth forests (six sites), at Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland, Australia. Searches for koala scats revealed evidence of koalas in ten per cent of rehabilitated sites (2/20) and 33 per cent of natural regrowth sites (2/6). Two factors were identified as being of greatest importance in facilitating koala recolonisation of restored habitats. Firstly, all recolonised sites were located close to native forest occupied by koalas (mean 135 m ¦ 52). Proximity to source animals is considered crucial to recolonisation of suitably restored habitats. Secondly, three of the four recolonised sites were dominated by koala food trees, most of which were large enough to be utilised by koalas. Availability of suitably abundant food resources is, therefore, also considered crucial. The requirement for these two factors, in combination, is highlighted by the absence of koalas at several sites that contained abundant food trees, but that were distal to areas with source animals, and vice-versa.Our research demonstrates the enormous potential for restoration of wildlife habitat on post-mining lands, even for species with specific requirements such as the koala. "Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Pulang Copper Mine, being China's largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal. The sulfidisation, acidification, recycle and thickening (SART) process is currently being used at NewcrestÆs Telfer Gold Mine to recover cyanide and copper from the cyanidation tails of the pyrite concentrate carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. While the process has been effective at attaining high recoveries of cyanide and copper, the Telfer SART plant has experienced higher than expected sulfide additions to achieve these recoveries. This paper details the results of surveys on the Telfer SART plant, which show that residence time appears to be causing the high sulfide consumptions. In recent years, the utilisation of ultra-fine ore in ironmaking has gradually increased due to the depletion of high-quality iron ore. The use of ultra-fine ore in the ironmaking process is typically energy intensive and leads to high CO2 emissions. The improvement of sinter reducibility is one of the methods used to reduce the environmental impact of using fine ore.In this study, a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter manufacturing process was investigated by controlling the sintering reaction. The key technology used in this method is the manufacture of mini-pellets by selective granulation equipment. The mini-pellets consist of iron ore, limestone and burnt lime and are designed to melt at temperatures below 1200°C. The molar ratio of CaO to Fe2O3 of the mini-pellets is 0.25~0.75. The 2~5 mm diameter mini-pellets are manufactured with burnt lime as the binding material.During the sintering of mini-pellets, goethite, which has relatively high reducibility, should be retained as residual ore in the sinter cake. The strength of the sinter cake was kept by the bonding reaction of the mini-pellets, which have a low melting temperature. This is the main principle of the reaction-controlled sintering method.The reaction-controlled sintering method manufactures a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter cake and increases sinter productivity by around 15 per cent using ultra-fine iron ore.CITATION:Chung, B J and Ji, Y K, 2015. "World-class mine projects are increasingly failing to become world-class mines. Non-technical, socio-political and environmental problems seem, in part, to be the cause. However, the intangible and qualitative nature of these problems means overcoming them will require a greater systemic understanding of how the various technical and non-technical factors interact. This is particularly important as the concept of sustainable development has changed the industry paradigm sufficiently that it is no longer clear what world-class means. Finally, this better systemic understanding of mine projects needs communicating back to the exploration sector to improve exploration targeting.However, a disconnect between the exploration and mining sectors and between geologists and mining’s other professional disciplines means this is currently not possible. The use of economic evaluation techniques to assess the risk and value presented by the various technical and non-technical factors can assist with this by giving the varied professions a common language and including inputs from all disciplines. This paper therefore suggests a theoretical framework for analysing the various technical and non-technical factors, particularly the most challenging intangible and qualitative ones, and incorporating them into the typical economic evaluation techniques used in the mining industry.Understanding the risk and value relating to both technical and non-technical risks, however, places a greater emphasis on mining geologists to be conversant with a wide range of disciplines. Mining geologists will have to develop three types of knowledge:focusedinter-disciplinarybroad. In addition, they will have to become systemic thinkers to connect these types of knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach will require the use of fundamental critical thinking skills, common sense, intuition, experience and quantitative modelling techniques, dependent on the situation. The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms and degree of degradation likely to occur within coal mine spoil of different qualities.To investigate this, five clay mineral-rich coal mine spoil samples were collected from the Bowen Basin, and each sample was subjected to wetting and drying cycles to simulate degradation that could be expected on wetting-up in situ, with their particle size distribution analysed both before and after degradation. These results were compared with the results of a modified slake durability test, in which the entire sample was tested.The paper presents the results of the accelerated degradation and modified slake durability tests on each of the five spoil samples. These results were related to the physical and geochemical characteristics of the samples, which highlighted their importance. The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Laboratory flotation tests on fresh cyclone overflow samples are a useful tool to troubleshoot and indeed to improve plant performance; however, reproducibility between laboratory flotation test and plant performance is important for interpretation of the laboratory tests and hence their usefulness. Chemical reproducibility can be achieved with the addition of the required reagents; however, reproducing the physics of forces and energy in a 5 L cell compared to a 50 000 L plant cell or a 500 000 L plant cell is not generally studied or discussed. For some tests such as collector evaluation the physics of the flotation process may not be critical, but for some evaluations in the laboratory, it can be important.All flotation plants suffer from losses of valuable <20 µm mineral. Selective mineral aggregation has long been recommended to improve the poor flotation recovery of <20 µm sulfide minerals; however, successfully testing any type of selective sulfide mineral aggregation’s effect on flotation recovery in the laboratory on practical plant samples requires reproducing plant cell physics. The energy input per litre and the forces in a laboratory cell are vastly different to a plant cell. Reproducibility between laboratory and plant tests requires that these differences be minimised. This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. Ore roasting has long been used for beneficiation and assay upgrading of different ores. In this process, which is mainly used for sulfide ores, the ore is heated to a high temperature. More specifically, it is a metallurgical process involving gas-solid reactions at elevated temperatures. Some types of Iron ore are weak in magnetic properties. Hematite, goethite and limonite are classified in this group. Unlike magnetite, which shows strong magnetic susceptibility, these ores are hard to beneficiate through magnetic separation route. Many researches have focused on gravity separation and flotation routes for upgrading these ores and these methods have also been utilised in the industry. One of the methods to whose industrial application less attention has been paid is magnetising roasting in which the non-magnetic iron ore is transformed to magnetite which is further beneficiated through magnetic separation. In this study, magnetising roasting tests have been performed on one goethite sample in order to check the feasibility of using this method for this specific ore in industrial scale. It is worth mentioning that high intensity magnetic separation have been performed on this sample before but the achieved results were not promising. Results have revealed that through magnetising roasting magnetite content of the ore could be increased from 1.7 per cent up to about 25 per cent. FeO content of the feed sample was increased from 1.03 per cent up to around 9.25 per cent. Also optimum size distribution for achieving the best results in magnetising roasting for this sample has been determined through this study. The best results were achieved when the ore size was 0–10 mm. The effect of coal ratio, time and temperature on the process have also be studied. A coal ratio of 5 per cent, time of 30 min and a temperature of 850°C were determined to be the optimum conditions. Finally, the technical feasibility of utilising magnetising roasting for this specific ore has been confirmed.
