It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

The Estonia Mine, operated by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS (EEK), the mining division of the Estonian Government's energy company, Eesti Energia AS, is a large room and pillar mine located in Eastern Estonia. It supplied approximately 4.9 Mt/a of oil shale in financial year ending 2010, which is used for electricity and shale oil generation. Due to the Estonian climate and the power station's need for a dry product, Estonia Mine has developed a planning system where short-term demands of the power stations dictate the schedule. Such an arrangement requires maximising flexibility and consequently the mine only operated for 199 days in 2010.The footprint plays a key role in achieving mass mining rates as the 12 km + 12 km lease area allows the mine to split into mining districts that act independently of each other and maximise the number of work areas available. Coupled with this, the geology of the mine is relatively homogenous over the mining lease, simplifying the mine design and production methods.During the last five years, EEK has commissioned a comprehensive conveyor network. Consequently, material handling only requires loaders to dump oil shale direct from the production face onto a chain conveyor that feeds the conveyor network that ultimately supplies the enrichment plant. Dewatering is also of critical importance, with 90 Mm3 of water discharged annually. EEK uses large trenches up to 3.5 m deep and 1.2 m wide to channel groundwater. Track mounted mechanical saws are used to cut slots in the floor, to control overbreak in blasting these trenches.EEK has introduced Salzgitter Machinenbau GB 280S auger drills that drill three 280 mm diameter holes simultaneously. This has improved void hole drilling times and reduced the drilling required for each face, reducing the overall production cycle time. Blasting activities have also been decoupled from other mining activities negating the need for firing times through the use of small independent firings, required to control vibrations.

In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.

The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. Were it simply a matter of extracting tin from the simple tin sulphide, the proposition would undoubtedly be simple enough. When, however, other valuable metallic sulphides are combined with the tin, and it is required to separate these intomarketable products, then the proposition becomes somewhat complex, and such is the case with the class of material of which I am about to write. The locality where it occurs is Howell, New South Wales, and chiefly at the Conrad Silver-Lead Mine. The tin sulphide occurs chemically alloyed with copper, iron and other metals associated with galena, pyrites, mispickel, blende and silver sulphide in varying proportions, and generally in a gangue of highly crystallised quartz.Several varieties of tin sulphides occur, and from the following analyses of three minerals, these being specimens specially selected free from foreign matters, it will be seen that the chemical composition is somewhat complex.

These may be of interest to members examining the collection of ores, etc., from Mount Lyell, which is a feature of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, and may have some value as geological records. No. 7 and No 8 are analyses of samples of footwall rock from the Lyell Tharsis mine. No. 7 is hard, crystalline, fine-grained, and of homogenous structure. It has a dark-red colour, due to ferric oxide (Fig 1); and was taken from a place eight feet east of the ore body and about half way between the 50 feet and 100 feet levels. No. 8 is from the same excavation and from four feet east of the ore body it is softer than No. 7, being easily scratched with a knife-blade, of a deeper dark-red colour, and has a slaty cleavage.

Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). The current index tests are also not appropriate for assessment of coalmine immediate roof and floor rocks.CITATION:Beamish, B B and Theiler, J, 2017. Important factors in dredge design are the estimation of total head, and the determination of flow in and around suction nozzles and in pipe lines. Total head for the dredge pump is calculated from velocity, static, and friction heads. Flow into suction nozzles depends on whether hydraulic jets or mechanical cutters are used, and on nozzle shape. Design of pipe lines depends on the transportation characteristics of the pulp, skin friction, swirl, and the avoidance of cavitation. Measurement and control of flow is important.INTRODUCTIONEconomic deposits of heavy minerals along the east coast of Australia occur in frontal dunes, which are normally unconsolidated and granular, or in hind dune areas which may contain indurated seams interspersed with loose material. In working frontal dunes, dredging depths are usually shallow since values do not persist for more than a few feet below sea level. However, the controlling factor in dredging the hind dune areas is the level of the water table and suction dredges may be designed to mine to depths of 120 ft, or even more, if necessary.In previous applications of suction dredges in the industry attention was directed primarily towards production and there was only limited research on fundamental techniques. However, with lower grade deposits now forming the major ore reserves, production levels and profit margins will fall unless more efficient dredges are developed.For satisfactory design of dredges it is essential that the total head be accurately estimated and that detailed information of the principles of flow in and around suction nozzles be determined. This paper presents information gained from field experience and laboratory investigation on these aspects.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level. The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.
