Alpha Portland Cement Co.'s mining operations at Manheim W. Va., produce 750,000 bbl of limestone yearly, averaging 2200 bbl per working day. Thirteen parallel entries have been driven to date, each almost 30 ft high and about 45 ft wide, extending back 5000 ft to the working faces. Pitch of the seam from the lowest to the highest entries is steep enough to provide excellent year- round natural ventilation, and this, together with the size of the entries and a good bottom, has allowed face crews to drive right up to the working areas in the family car.

When dealing with acid mine drainage as to treatment levels, costs, and evaluation of abatement schemes, predictions of the quantity and quality of the discharges are needed. An acid mine-drainage model is presented in this paper. In essence, the model is a hybrid of computer programs for stream flow simulation and acid mine drainage. Two major aspects of the model are discussed: mine-water generation and acid-load production. The former is based on hydrologic concepts and the latter on pyrite oxidation kinetics and oxidation product removal. The total model is programmed for the high-speed digital computer. The major inputs are: climatological, basin characteristics, and mine characteristics data. By the use o f the hydrologic model the amount of water that flows through the pyritic system is determined. From this information, acid loads removed by leaching, inundation, and gravity diffusion are then predicted. The outputs from the total model are: average daily mine-water discharge, the associated acid concentration or load, plus the average daily flow in the receiving streams or at basin outlets. The capabilities of the separate models have been tested individually and the joint model has been applied to a small drift mine in southeastern Ohio.

No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

BLAST-FURNACE practice in France is determined more or less by the character of the ores used. Some French ores are siliceous and others are calcareous, therefore by proper burdening a self-fluxing mix can be used. This is not always clone, as, for instance, at the Caen furnaces of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie, where the Soumont ore of Normandy is used, which is a carbonate. This ore is crushed and calcined at the mines, yielding a product that is porous and well sized for blast-furnace consumption. The lines of the Caen furnaces are given in Fig. 1. Originally these furnaces had 16 tuyeres; six are plucked and these tuyeres are set in the lower part of the bosh. Operating data on these furnaces are given in Table 1.

This paper describes experiments which represent an effort to measure preciscly the pressure-time history in detonating condensed commercial explosives. The performance of explosives in mining has been a favorite subject for experimentalists and theorists for many decades. Much useful empirical information has been developed; but it has not yet been possible to predict, or even to account for, the behavior of explosives in mining on the basis of fundamental physical principals. A basic piece of information that would appear necessary for any rigorous analysis is the pressure-time history in the detonating condensed explosive. The experiments described here represent an effort to measure this relationship precisely in commercial explosives. THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method, first described by Cowan and Jacksonl has been extensively evaluated by Cowan and Balchan for relatively simple explosives. The experimental procedure involves the detonation of a layer of explosive between metal plates whose external surfaces are polished to a mirror finish (Fig. 1). W. W. Mein: One of the most amusing things in Nevada City – I was born and was going to school there - was that my mother made overcoats for us, and because they were different from other boys’ overcoats, we’d hide them under a bridge and pick them up on the way home. I left Nevada City with my parents when I was about eleven years old, and moved to Oakland. This was caused by the closing down of the hydraulic mines and my father being send to the El Cayo mine in Venezuela, which was then one of the richest gold mines in the world. Hamilton Smith operated the hydraulic mines in California, and when they were closed down by the Sawyer decision, he was persuaded by the Rothschilds to go to London. There, together, they formed the London Exploration Co.

We give the following brief notes on early works containing some reference to mineralogy, mining, or metallurgy, to indicate the literature available to Agricola and for historical notes bearing upon the subject. References to these works in the footnotes may be most easily consulted through the personal index. GREEK AUTHORS.-Only a very limited Greek literature upon subjects allied to mining or natural science survives. The whole of the material of technical interest could be , reproduced on less than twenty of these pages. Those of most importance are : Aristotle (384-322 B.c.), Theophrastus (371-288 B.c.), Diodorus Siculus (1st Century B.c.), Strabo (64 B.c.-25 A.D.), and Dioscorides (1st Century A.D.). Aristotle, apart from occasional mineralogical or metallurgical references in De Mirabilibus, is mostly of interest as the author of the Peripatetic theory of the elements and the relation of these to the origin of stones and metals. Agricola was, to a considerable measure, a follower of this school, and their views colour much of his writings. We, however, discuss elsewhere1 at what point he departed from them. Especially in De Ortu ct Causis does he quote largely from Aristotle's Meteorologica. Physica, and De Coelo on these subjects. There is a spurious work on stones attributed to Aristotle of some interest to mineralogists. It was probably the work of some Arab early in the Middle Ages.[ ]

In this paper it is suggested that the degree of contiguity (or contact) between adjacent grains be described by three parameters which can be rigorously determined from measurements on a random plane of polish. An expression is also derived for the number of contacts per unit volume and it is shown that this quantity can-not, in general, be estintated from measurements on a random plane. IN a recent contribution1 Gurland has proposed various parameters for describing the degree of contiguity (or contact) between grains of the same phase in an alloy. To relate these parameters to measurements on a random two-dimensional section, it was necessary in most cases to make some assumption about the form of the structure. Since Gurland was specifically interested in sintered carbide structures, he chose, quite reasonably, to assume that the grains were constant-size spheres and that all the intersections were flat areas of constant radius. Since, as we will show, the relationships between the parameters and the measurements are strongly dependent on the grain shape and size distribution, it is evident that these assump tions will not be satisfactory approximations for a

IN view of the great importance of accurate knowledge respecting the chemistry of iron and steel, as related to their physical properties, I come before you with a paper showing the great mass of work which has been heretofore done on the subject. I have tabulated the more important data I bring at this time, so as to draw out the results clearly. This information is accessible to all who will seek for it. I have made it the basis of my own practice throughout, and such knowledge is undoubtedly the only foundation, for the successful practice of metallurgy. As is well known the ordnance corps of our army, after 1841, made exhaustive experiments on the properties of cast-iron. The investigations were undertaken in order to obtain necessary information on the reorganization of the corps. I wish to call your attention to the results obtained by a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of cast-iron for guns, to describe certain characteristic peculiarities of steel, and to give a brief history of the chemical work relating to carbon in iron.
