AS far back as 40 years ago management made the initial steps toward utilizing the large amount of reject marble produced by the dimension stone quarries in sized products. In 1947 the Calcium Products Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. was organized to manufacture crushed, ground, and screened products from Georgia marble.* It became obvious early in operations that salability of any products of this type was determined by several factors: high calcium carbonate content, whiteness, dryness, and cleanness. Because no reject material could consistently meet these specifications, Calcium Products Div. now operates three underground quarries for raw material feed. In underground operations no stripping is required, surface contamination and trash are eliminated, weather causes no operational difficulties, and the raw material is maintained dry for plant processing.

IN the course of the past 75 years the treatment of copper ores has undergone the most profound changes. To a lesser degree, this is true of all the nonferrous metals, but the rapid increase in the demand for copper due to the phenomenal growth of the electrical industry, and the discovery of vast new ore deposits in Michigan, Montana and Arizona, provided an exceptional incentive for improvements in smelting practice and for large-scale operations. Because these must perforce be carried on in regions where labor was scarce and wages high, the need for mechanization and larger smelting units soon became apparent. At a later date the porphyry coppers were discovered, with ores so low in grade that enormous tonnages had to be treated daily if they were to be made to pay at all. In some instances these ores were associated with, or overlain by, oxidized ores, which could not be concentrated mechanically and, of course, could not be smelted directly. This led to the development of the copper-leaching process. While the principles of the various smelting and leaching processes are for the most part of European origin, and have long been known, modern practice is essentially American and was evolved on this side of the Atlantic. The ores of copper may be divided into three general classes; viz, native copper, sulphide and oxidized ores. For four years your Committee has been engaged in the study of problems connected with the educational preparation of professional geophysicists. The Present report represents the conclusions drawn from the investigations and deliberations undertaken since it was first organized. These studies have shown that the evolution of geophysics has proceeded along lines that differed from those marking the advance of classical geology. The latter science developed as a descriptive one, dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena, and the elementary, rational explanations that could be offered therefor. The fact that these phenomena were also chemical and physical in nature was seldom given more than passing acknowledgment. During the last half century, however, a new approach to problems of terrestrial phenomena has become of greater significance. This new attack has come through the sciences of physics and chemistry, as the people trained therein have investigated the facts of the earth as problems in their respective sciences. This development has been chiefly at the hands of European investigators, and European universities have long recognized it by establishing departments or institutions of geophysics. In the universities of North America, their arbitrary departmentalization into fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc., has prevented the academic recognition of such domains of science as geophysics and geochemistry. In consequence, the development of these subjects in the United States has been largely at the hands of nonacademic institutions, while the universities themselves are evidently in a state of confusion as to how the subject should be handled. In some places an attempt to teach geophysics is made in the physics department, in others in the geology department, in some in the engineering school, and occasionally as a cooperative effort; a Department of Geophysics is seldom found in North America. In some instances, proper academic plan. ning has been precluded by interdepart. mental jealousies, or by lack of appreciation of the significance of the subject. Howe, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 78, June, 1913, pp. 1075 to 1136. ALFRED STANSFIELD, Montreal, Canada :-In Professor Howe's paper on the position of Ae3, he shows its industrial importance in determining the temperature to which steel should be heated. for "grain refining." Several years ago I carried out a research on the " burning " of steel and found that while hypo-eutectoid steel should be heated to Ae3, hyper-eutectoid steel that has been very much overheated must be reheated to the curve Sa on the carbon-iron diagram, in order to redissolve the pro-eutectoid cementite and thus, to obtain recrystallization and grain-refining. This treatment was necessarily only partly successful, and I should like to ask whether the conditions of heat treatment for refining overheated high-carbon steels have been ascertained. Speaking of the " Persistence of Solidificational Segregation " Professor Howe quotes an experiment made by Mr. Stead in which a bar of 1.2 per cent. carbon steel was immersed in a large mass of molten blast-furnace slag and allowed to cool with it. The steel was heated above the solidus (curve Aa on the carbon-iron diagram), but below the liquidus (curve AB). A drop of eutectic carbon-iron alloy, rich in carbon, had liquated out and hung below the bar. This agrees exactly with my own observations on the burning of steel, but my interpretation differs somewhat from that of Professor Howe. Professor Howe considers that the fusion of a part of the metal (rich in carbon) shows that the solidificational irregularities of composition had persisted through the rolling and heat treatment of the steel, as otherwise no part of the steel would have been sufficiently fusible to melt. It does not appear to me that such an explanation is necessary. A piece of steel represented in temperature and composition by any point within the area ABa will ultimately resolve itself into a solid phase and a liquid phase in equilibrium with each other. It may appear that if the steel were absolutely uniform no fusion could take place, but the smallest nucleus of high-carbon, fusible alloy would ultimately bring about this separation into liquid and solid phases, by diffusion of the carbon from the solid to the liquid areas. The conzpaction of metal powders is analyzed through density-pressure curves as a three-stage process — die filling, individual particle motion, gross compact deformatim. The densification occurring during each of these stages is evaluated quantitatively. The amount of densification in the first and second stages is primarily a function of particle geometry. The densification taking place in the third stage is dependent mainly upon the material. AT the present time the densification of powders during compaction is usually described by terms such as "compactibility," "compressibility," and "compression ratio." Schwarzkopfl has proposedthat compactibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility be used to indicate the extent towhichthe density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Compression ratio is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder. 13alshina found that the pressure imposed on a compact affects the relative volume of the compact according to the following relation: hP= - LV + C [ll where: P is the applied pressure, V is the relative volume of the compact, Ratio of the specific volume of the compact to that of the material without porosity. The White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, tree-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limeetone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

The activity of zinc in dilute liquid lead alloys containing small additions of silver and gold has been measured using a multielectrode galvanic cell with a fused chloride salt electrolyte. The range of temperatures studied in the Pb-Zn-Ag system was 550" to 670°C and in the Pb-Zn-Au system was 680" to 800°C. The interaction parameters between zinc and the precious metals in the respective temperature ranges are ThE lead-rich corners of the Pb-Zn-Ag and Pb-Zn-Au ternary systems are of considerable industrial importance. The many mechanical, geological, and economic factors which influence the planning of a directional drilling program are thoroughly discussed and analyzed. It is demonstrated that the planning of a directionally drilled multiple-well artificial island location is a complicated undertaking and that it is imperative that complete planning and engineering analysis be undertaken before the program is started. Complete planning is profitable because all of the factors influencing the directional work are in general interrelated and many time compromises have to be made before a harmonious program results. The engineering control necessary to accomplish a complicated directional drilling program is outlined. Various means by which engineering control can be increased, such as cylinder drilling specifications, are given. A hypothetical example is developed for a complete offshore artificial island of ten wells to demonstrate the more important factors involved in the planning. Included with this example are special charts and tables which make more rapid the drafting of directional drilling proposals and maps. Introduction A petroleum engineer must consider many and varied factors when planning a long range directional drilling program for an offshore or inaccessible location on an oil structure. The basic principles of direc- tional drilling planning and operation must be reconciled with his company's drilling practices, and frequently special concessions to standard drilling and production practices should be made. The field techniques and tools used in directional drilling are well known and widely used, but the deliberate, careful planning of a complete directional program is in the main a recent innovation. This development, plus the increased demand for oil resources and the consequent exploitation of inaccessible structures and offshore locations, has placed this problem before many engineering departments for the first time. Directional drilling programs of a very complex and difficult nature have been successfully carried out in the Mid-Continent and Pacific Coast regions. The planning itself of a directional drilling project, however, has not had the careful analysis it deserves and we can reasonably expect widespread future progress along thesc lines. Data and experience gained in these programs by the directional drilling service companies and the oil producers have been studied with the objective of giving the engineer a better conception of the factors which govern the various steps in planning a series of directional wells. The newest engineering procedures are the result of recent careful analysis of years of directional drilling work accomplished under the supervision of directional drilling service companies working with the oil companies. An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 and to conceptualizing geologic model s. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

M. A. SCHEIL (presented in written form).-Messrs. Franks, Binder and Brown are to be congratulated for the splendid paper that they have presented. We have not made stress-corrosion tests with the cantilever type of specimen which they describe, but it is well known that a uniform stress across a certain portion of the gage length can be obtained with such a specimen. This type of specimen would appear quite expensive to make. The writer was interested in the authors' remarks concerning the erratic results obtained from specimens with cold sheared edges. It might be of general interest to record here some results we obtained with annealed sheet N4 in. thick of type 304 stainless steel. After specimen No. 4 had been exposed 65 days without any signs of cracking we applied a strain gage and measured the stress as 25,810 psi. This value is considerably higher than we find for some of the type 347 stainless alloys and suggests that 18-8 might have a different threshold value for stress-corrosion cracking than 18-8 columbium. The test data in Table I show that strain caused by cold work or polishing has a pronounced effect in lowering the time for failure. In my paper I showed values of 8 hr. and 17 hr. to stress crack cold-rolled type 301 stainless steel stressed beyond the yield point. This steel contained 8.31

The Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of Sari Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name " San Belipe district" is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,' who says: " The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camagueg City, in the province of Camagueg.....Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements .as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one. The late Walter Herd1 in 1929 gave a full description of past and present conditions in No. 2 mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, developed theories regarding the cause of these bumps and made certain suggestions regarding possible methods of future development. Recapitulating briefly from Mr. Herd's paper, the seam is bituminous coal, averages 9 ft. in thickness and has a well defined parting containing fusain about 14 in. from the roof. This roof coal is somewhat stronger than the rest of the seam and has a tendency to cling to the roof. The pitch of the seam where it is now being worked is about 20". The first manifestations of bumps began when the room and pillar workings had reached a depth of cover of 1900 ft. and under continuously increasing depth of cover these bumps increased to such an extent, both in number and severity, that in the year 1924 it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary. After closely studying all the factors involved and benefiting largely by valuable outside advice obtained by the Provincial Department of Mines of Nova Scotia,2 the system of working was changed from room and pillar to longwall retreating. Mr. Herd's paper described in detail three remarkable bumps in the year 1928 in April, July and October that affected the 5700-ft. and 5900-ft. East levels, the last bump being so severe both in intensity and in extent of damage done that this district was abandoned. The longwall workings to the west of the slope had been stopped in the year 1926 owing to an inbreak of water, coming from the flooded waste of No. 3 seam lying some 400 ft. vertically overhead. This inflow was not excessive, but a large quantity of water being impounded in the old workings it was considered advisable to take the prudent course and not incur the risk of possibly increasing the flow by further working. This district has remained idle ever since.

The solubilities of hydrogen in titanium and several of its alloys were determined at 600 to 1000°C and pressures of 0.05 to 10µ of mercury. Solubility increases with increasing beta phase in the alloys. Factors found to affect degassing rates are specimen size and presence of thick surficial oxide. Removal of hydrogen by heating in vacuum and in flowing inert atmospheres was studied. Practical curves predicting minimum degassing times are presented. THE presence of hydrogen in titanium and titanium alloys has detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the metal.'"," The hydrogen content of commercial titanium is sometimes of the order of 200 ppm by weight' and varies with alloy composition. As a consequence, titanium and some titanium alloys as normally processed are sometimes not ductile unless treated to lower the hydrogen content. The best known hydrogen-removal treatment is heating the material in a vacuum. The rate of removal (degassing) at a give temperature determines the duration of the treatment required to attain a satisfactory low hydrogen level.

This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. The object of the construction and operation of the 80-ton leaching plant was to test out the leaching of sand tailings on a large scale and, if possible, determine a definite method of operation, and the best construction for the larger unit which is now being built. It was also of importance to obtain some practical data as regards cost items. The 80-ton plant was not expected to be a commercial success. A leaching process on such low-grade material necessitates the treatment of a very large tonnage. Such a cost item as labor, for instance, is entirely out of proportion in such a small plant. The amounts of acid, salt, scrap iron, and fuel for roasting, however, are the same per ton in an 80-ton plant as in a 2,000-ton plant. These costs were definitely established. Also the percentages of extraction and grade of tailings were definitely determined for a large-sized unit. Following will be found the description of the plant, the method of operation and the- results obtained. A general view of the plant is given in Fig. 1. The bins consisted of one coal bin with a capacity of 30 tons, one salt bin with a capacity of 20 tons, and a "mill tailings" or feed bin which held 70 tons. The coal and salt bins were placed with their floor level even with the firing floor of the roasting furnace. The feed bin, to give it greater capacity, discharged about 12 ft. below this point, to a 12-in. conveyor belt, which in turn discharged into a pug mill. This fed another conveyor belt, which discharged into the top hearth of the furnace. The furnace was an ordinary six-hearth MacDougall roaster, 20 ft. in diameter. It was equipped with two fire boxes, on opposite sides, the flames entering on the third hearth. An induced draft was obtained with a Buffalo blower, worked as an exhaust fan. Just above the top hearth was an annular flue around the whole circumference of the furnace. Slots at intervals of about 18 in. led from this flue down into the top hearth. The slots were 2 in. wide by 6 in. long. This annular flue proved rather unsatisfactory, as it tended to fill up with flue dust and choke the dots, thus cutting down the draft. Prior to 1909 that mountain of porphyry known as Sacramento Hill had hardly been touched though it had always been thought to contain ore. During that year, exploratory work was started by underground methods; drifting and raising continued until 1913. It was proved that a mineralized zone existed, the limits of which had not been determined ; so, because of the lower costs of exploratory work and the greater desirability of vertical sections, it was decided to prove the extent of the ore zone by churn drills. Drilling continued until 1917, when it seemed almost certain that the horizontal limits of the orebodies had been determined. Ore continued in depth in one direction beyond a point where it was economical to explore by churn drilling; this extension is still being developed by underground methods. The irregularities of the boundaries of the ore zones, together with the variable grades of ore encountered, made it necessary to drill on the corners of 100-ft. squares. Two ore zones were proved, known as the East and West Orebodies. The Sacramento Hill porphyry stock intruded into the Dividend fault. The fault ran roughly east and west with a dip to the south, having pre-Cambrian schists on the north against Paleozoic limestone on the south. This intrusion was accompanied by a silica breccia on the south periphery, along the limestone contact side. The ore lay in the silica breccia and in the porphyry, some distance from the breccia. NO ore was found in the heart of the porphyry mass on the north side, along the schist contact. The West Orebody is elliptic in shape, having a major axis of 1200 ft. (366 m.) and a minor axis of 800 ft. (244 m.); these diminish with depth until, at 300 ft., the axes are 500 ft. and 300 ft., respectively.
