Introduction The Bulletin of the Institute for March, 1911, is chiefly devoted to papers upon the iron ores of northeastern Cuba. At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. In the subjoined footnote will be found a list of the principal papers of special interest which have already been published.1 The further remark may, however, be made that the

THE drilling of constantly deeper oil wells has made it imperative that the manufacturer of casing be ever searching for new methods and new materials to meet the increased demands. One phase of this search constitutes the subject matter of the present paper. Starting from the original Drake well in 1859, the depth of wells has advanced by leaps and bounds, until today depths of 6000 to 8000 ft. are common. The trend to deeper wells is nicely illustrated by the curve in Fig. 1.1 The points plotted are the maximum depths attained in the various pools which were at their peak for the years given. It may be of some interest to observe the change that has taken place in the tensile and collapsing stresses over the last 25 years. The more familiar compositions of both the iron-carbon-chromium' and the iron-carbon-tungsten2 systems have been investigated with a degree of thoroughness which has permitted the construction of their three-dimensional equilibrium diagrams; and it is probable that these equilibrium diagrams are sufficiently accurate for the present metallo-graphic needs. Strangely enough, in spite of their importance, the alloys of iron, carbon and manganese apparently have not been investigated in the same systematic manner, and so far as is known, no three-component equilibrium diagram for this system is available. Even iron-carbon-nickel alloys3 have been studied rather more thoroughly; for these the solidus and liquidus surfaces have already been determined, but the solid transformations in this, as in the manganese system, have not been reported systematically. The present paper deals with the constitution at equilibrium of a series of 36 iron-carbon-manganese alloys of commercial purity limited by 1.5 per cent carbon and 15 per cent manganese, a range of compositions including most of the manganese steels. The temperature range of melting has not been determined, nor has the high-temperature (delta iron) ferrite equilibrium been included in the study, it being considered that the more important characteristics of the manganese steels are their ordinary transformations in the solid state. The delta iron region is almost certain to be a small tetrahedron not very different in magnitude or contour from that in the iron-carbon-nickel diagram. It is probably true

Diatomite is a siliceous rock of sedimentary origin, which may vary in degree of consolidation, but which consists mainly of the fossilized remains of diatoms. These are microscopic algae of the order Bacillaria. Diatomite is a unique form of silica, there being nothing else found in nature or produced by the manufacturing arts, that has its characteristic physical structure. There are numerous sediments which contain some diatom residues, admixed with a substantial amount of other materials-clay, carbonates or silica. While these are classified as diatomaceous silts, shales, or mudstones, they are not properly diatomite, a designation which is restricted to material of such qualities that it is suitable for commercial uses. The terms diatomaceous earth and kieselgur are synonymous with diatomite. The expressions infusorial earth and tripolite are obsolete. Diatomaceous silica is a definition best used to distinguish the basic component of diatomite, that is, the substance of the silica shell itself and is the major constituent of beneficiated diatomite or processed diatomaceous products. Some highly indurated materials, such as cherty shale, porcelanite, and opaline cherts which have resulted from diagenetic changes cannot be considered as diatomite although they may have been derived therefrom. On the other hand, diatomaceous oozes or loose sediments consisting mainly of diatom residues with or without much organic matter are source materials in process of becoming diatomite. Composition and Properties Pure diatomite is composed of opaline or hydrous silica, with small amounts of associated inorganic components-alumina, iron, alkaline earths, alkali metals, and minor constituents, all of which may occur in solid solution or as an essential part of the opal complex. Crude diatomite on the other hand may contain variable amounts of organic matter and soluble salts, and the usual contaminants of sedimentary formations-particles of rockforming minerals, sand, clay, or carbonates. As occurring in nature, diatomite contains an unusual amount of free water, which may vary from 10 to 60 pct or more. Diatomite, in the dry deposits which are characteristic of most of the important world deposits, occurs as a lightweight, comparatively light colored, "chalklike" material. The apparent density (dry basis) in situ varies from 20 to 40 lb per cu ft. The structure may be either massive or finely stratified. The earth is highly porous, usually soft and easily friable. It is nonreactive with acids and may be tentatively identified by the above characterizations. Confirmation is by microscopic examination which readily reveals the nature of the material. In deposits which contain organic matter the appearance of the material is totally different. The color may vary from light tan or gray to brown, greenish or nearly black. There is frequently difficulty in distinguishing it in the field from peatlike materials, but the difference is readily apparent after calcination. Powdered diatomite or diatomite products have an apparent density (loose weight) of 5 to 16 lb per cu ft, wet densities of 10 to 30 lb per cu ft, specific gravities 1.9 to 2.35, index of refraction 1.42 to 1.48. Diatomite is essentially micro-amorphous, but does show some tendency toward orientation in structure after a cristobalite pattern. Amorphous silica has been considered as a random association of cristobalite crystallites, the size of which are only slightly larger than a unit cell.20 The prop-

As papers are placed before you upon large gas-engines in Belgium and Germany, it was considered that some information should be given upon the same subject in Great Britain. I therefore agreed to compile these notes, which I have made very short in view of the somewhat full nature of the other papers presented to this meeting, and considering the complete nature of the many publications which have been made recently upon the subject of large gas-engines. I give below Tables I. to VI., showing the number and particulars of large gas-engines which have been built or are building by British makers, and in view of the growing size of gas-engines I have concluded that engines of less than 500 h.p. cannot now he included in the category of large gas-engines, and therefore I have not considered engines under that power. In selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses,'' for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lecture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct interpretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Laboratories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoyment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallurgical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corrosion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the disrussiorl will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corrosion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. Thus, in addition to the season cracking of brass may also be mentioned the "caustic embrittlement" of steel boiler

IN the United States, improvements in methods of combustion have made possible the use of the smaller sizes of anthracite. This coal is now being reclaimed from the culm banks accumulated by the miners in the more prodigal years. To-day the freshly mined "slush" is segre¬gated and stored against the time when, through briquetting or some other means, it may be utilized as a commercial fuel. For many years Europe has achieved enviable results in the conservation of her small coal by briquetting. This profitable industry, first placed on a commercial basis in France in 1842, has grown to such magnitude that the "'production during 1913 exceeded 36,000,000 short tons. Briquets produced in Great Britain are used principally for steam purposes and the greater part of the output is either exported or taken by the Admiralty. On the Continent the briquets are sold in all branches of the coal trade. The French railways consume from 16 to 40 per cent. of their fuel in briquet form, and in Germany the lignite briquets, (of which 20,000,000 tons were produced in 1913) are as familiar and interesting to the American traveler as the huge porcelain stoves in which they are burned. It is not strange, therefore, that aggressive and far-sighted promotors heralded this means of converting our ubiquitous coal waste into revenue. To the superficial student the briquetting process seemed so simple as to make success easy. It is for this reason principally that the path of the industry in America has been strewn with failures. The rash enthusiast had either not worked out the mechanical problems involved or had failed to grasp the local conditions under which the briquets must be made and sold. It may be confidently stated, however, that in spite of the many vicissitudes through which it has passed, coal briquetting is now an accomplished economic success in this country, and as a profitable adjunct to the coal industry it has come to stay.

Copper base alloys containing various amounts of aluminum and silicon are of considerable commercial interest. In particular the alloy containing 7 pct aluminum and 2 pet silicon shows an attractive combination of high strength with excellent, machinability. Since there is no evidence ill the literature that this ternary system has been studied since the recognition by Smith1 and Anderson2 in 1939 of the kappa phase of the binary copper-silicon system, the determination of the equilibrium phase relationships in the copper corner of the ternary diagram has been undertaken to provide a fundamental basis for understanding the behavior of these alloys. Phase boundaries have been determined by the micrographic examination of quenched samples while points on the liquidus surface have been obtained by thermal analysis. The results, of sufficient precision to serve their major purpose of providing a guide for the control of the manufacture of alloys in the region covered, are presented in a series of both isothermal and vertical sections of the diagram. Alloys StVdied For a rough survey of the copper corner of this ternary system the compositions listed in Table I (Series A) were employed. The results of examinations of these alloys indicated that the compositions listed in Table 2 (Series B) would further clarify regions of greater complexity. All alloys were prepared as 1200 g heats, the copper being melted under charcoal, and then first silicon and then aluminum were added. An excess of 0.05 pet silicon was allowed to cover deoxidation losses. Two small bars 5/8 by 1 1/4 by 5 1/4 in. were cast using Durville type casting equipment. Ailalyses were made on all alloys using material which was hot-rolled at 800 or 850°C and annealed 17 hr at 650°C. All analyses were found to be within 0.05 pet of the nominal composition. Since the precision of analysis is not much better than this, the points of both isothermal sections and vertical sections at fixed aluminum and silicon contents have been plotted at the compositions indicated by the nominal composition.

MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

The substance of this paper, now amended and altered in form for its present use, was the basis of a private report prepared under professional engagement.* A private report is necessarily objective, and deprived of the scope and technicality of a scieintific treatise—which accounts for the prevalence of drawings and succinct mathematical statements rather than full descriptive details in a paper reproduced from data, of which all the original working-notes have been destroyed. In a practical sense the Hudson river valley clay-deposits owe their present existence to the protection afforded by the rock-formations on which they are supported, and, instead of being uniform in depth or continuity, are subject to the irregularities of the rugged masses which preceded and are now concealed by them. The only available information concerning these deposits contained in previous public reports or maps furnished at best a mere photograph of the surface, and as now apparent this was misleading or unreliable. It was the object of this investigation to determine in a practical manner the location, form and extent of all the clay-deposits at present existing in the lower Hudson river valley, and to ascertain with a

GRAVITATIONAL measurements made by means of the Eötvös torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous .anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eötvös torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor.

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained-the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: [1 = ki [I]] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and [t] the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such a plot has been considered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation: [k = Ae-QIRT [2]] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase.4 The reaction layers tend to have a

A study was made of the change in density during the first (transient) and second (linear) stages of the creep curve of polycrystalline copper as a function of 1) stress, 2) temperature, 3) plastic strain, 4) impurity and atmosphere effects, and 5) structure, including single crystals. Voids were not observed in single crystals strained 15 pct at 500°C, or in a polycrystal-line aggregate produced by recrystallizing a single crystal, within the limit of sensitivity, Ae/e = 1 x 10-4. It appears that voids are heterogeneously nucleated at grain boundaries by an insoluble phase, or phases, which can be removed by directional solidification. The principal controlling mechanism of void growth appears to be condensation of vacancies at grain boundaries. Vacancies are transported to a boundary and condense as a consequence of the tensile stress component across the boundary, which depends on the orientation and configuration of the boundary plane and on boundary shear across ledges and other irregularities. The ultimate source of vacancies is the free surface and diffusional transport is by way of the boundary plane. PREVIOUS investigations have dealt with the nucle-ation of voids at grain boundaries under creep condition~'-~ and with the connection between grain boundary voids and subsequent brittle fracture.5-7 Growth of voids during the creep process, particularly in the transient and linear stages of creep, has not been studied with the same intensity. Therefore, it seems pertinent to investigate the process of void growth with respect to the related creep curve, and the morphology of growing voids with respect to the structure.

The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. The trend in ball milling has been toward mills of larger diameter, but without fundamental laws as a guide. The speeds at which mills are run have been a matter of cut-and-try. This paper deals with both diameter and speed and proposes to show the laws which apply to some laboratory ball mills, ranging in diameter from 18 to 42 in., run at various speeds. The correlation of power, speed and grinding rate of the respective mills will be shown by curves of markedly significant similarity. Before presenting the results some consideration will be given to the mechanics of ball milling. Mechanics and Theory of Ball Milling As early as 1904, Herman Fischerl reported observations on specially constructed ball mills which allowed the paths of balls to be studied. The following conclusions were drawn: 1. Balls do not grind the ore, but crush it by impact. 2. At slow speeds the balls roll down the inclined heap, but at higher speeds the balls close to the wall adhere to it until they reach a certain height, whence they are thrown through an arc to the bottom. 3. The falling balls do not come down in clusters, but in series, the balls of each row keeping to their own line of flight according to their distances from the wall while ascending. 4. A further increase in speed results in the balls adhering during the whole of the circuit to the side of the drum. (This centrifuging speed may be called the "critical" speed and may be taken as a reference basis, since it is a constant function of the diameter.)2

OF the many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one that has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. The many excellent textbooks of physical chemistry1 provide ample material on the principles of this subject for the student of steelmaking processes; yet with- out exception those texts draw the greater part of their illustrative material from room-temperature data. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a concise review of the principles of physical chemistry that have proved useful in studies of steelmaking and at the same time to present some of the data that are essential to the application of physical chemistry to reactions at high temperatures. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be ex- pressed in fairly simple terms. Many of the equations are logarithmic, and we shall use the symbols In X and log X to represent respectively the natural and the common logarithm of X. The two are related by In X = 2.303 log X. Logarithms may be read from a good slide rule with sufficient accuracy for our purposes. In a few spots a knowledge of the calculus will be, helpfu1. For the early conservationists before the first decade of the twentieth century, conservation meant largely the planned preservation of water, forest, soil, and wildlife resources-renewable natural resources-through efficient use. Water was primarily thought of as a resource that must be kept available for humans to enjoy in a recreational sense and as a habitat for wild animals, birds, and fish. Little thought was given to conserving water for actual human or industrial needs. If industry entered the picture it was as an actual or potential polluter of water, which was the basic necessity for drinking and bathing and for outdoor recreation. Even the forests were only held worthy of conservation largely because they were areas in which wildlife could, or should, abound and in which human beings might find relief from the cares and problems of everyday life. Finally, the soil was to be preserved in its natural fertility through proper fertilization, cultivation, and crop rotation; in this the conservation program did enter the realm of the practical. For through soil conservation, the world was to be able to raise increasingly large crops of constantly improved organic foods which the steadily growing population of the earth was to need to survive and improve. Relatively little time, however, was spent on considering what profit the farmers of the world were to make from the scientific farming on which they were to embark. In short, the appeal of the early conservationist program was much the same as that of the entire era of Theodore Roosevelt of which it was a part; it was to the heart rather than to the mind; it was to emotion rather than to reason. Because of the way in which the problem was approached, conservation took on the character of a crusade rather than that of a practical plan for the betterment of man through economically sound methods of improving his environment and the uses he makes of it. Conservation had, then, all the advantages of a stirring appeal to the emotions, but it did not have the lasting results that would have been achieved by a program with a sound economic basis.

R. F. McELVENNY.- The next item is: "Center and other methods, vs. side charging." That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. E. A. BARNARD.- In fact, I think the calcine charge spreads more on the side than on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- If you maintain a deep bath. E. A. BARNARD.- That is one thing we have to be careful about, to hold the charge back.
