ONE per cent. of ash in a ton of coal has been so little considered that in many circles it has been positively ignored. Even P. T. Barnum had never heard of it, or he would have had one on exhibition alongside the Cardiff Giant and the White Elephant. One per cent. of ash is closely related by both those freaks of Barnum in that it is "stone" and, in its aggregate, it is the greatest "White Elephant" that the American public now supports. Some of you may have paid Mr. Barnum for a look at the "petrified man" (named the Cardiff Giant by the gullible wise men of the early seventies); but it is certain that everyone of you is now paying for the support of the great White Elephant that is being constantly carried by our railroads all over the country-at the public's expense. " One per cent. of ash in a ton of coal" requires 120,000 open-top railroad cars each year to transport this use- less stone giant from its native bed in the coal seams of the bituminous regions to the coal bins of the consuming public.

(communication to the Secretary) : The somewhat exceptional features discussed by Dr. Jenncy in his paper on " The Mineral Crest" mere recognized and described by Mr. Tower in our report on the Tintic district. The general absence of surface-outcrops of important ore-bodies, and their occurrence, when present, at relatively low points, are noticeable characteristics of this district, and the statements made by Dr. Jenncy agree in general with our observations. The approximately horizontal upper limit of the Silver Gem ore-body in the Bullion-Beck mine is figured in this report, and mention made also of the horizontal pipes of ore found in several mines." PROMINENCE has been given lately in engineering circles to the question whether an organisation with manifold interests can be as effective as one with a single aim, especially if that single aim be the furtherance of affairs of moment and the welfare of engineers in general. In its earlier days, the A. I. M. E. was forbidden by its constitution to engage in non-technical public affairs, but the members altered the constitution in this respect, in the year 1912, in response to the growing demand that engineers be more human in their interests and that the engineering societies represent them in this respect. Since that time, the activity of mining engineers in public affairs has been growing rapidly, and we are happy that the Institute has been able to render very valuable economic services. Doubtless the greatest public service rendered by engineers in a recent great emergency was the work of the Naval Consulting Board, without which the U. S. Navy would never have been able to enter promptly into service upon our entrance into the war, ,and both Navy and Army would have been a long time without the munitions that came at an early date. We can never forget that this Board was established through the direct activity of the then President of the A. I. M. E., with the hearty cooperation of other national organizations.

(communication to the Secretary*): Professor Lodge takes issue with Mr. Crawford and myself on results obtained by the scorification-method of assay on " zinc-box precipitates," which we published in a paper on the subject in the publication named below.' In our work we found that the normal seorification-method, employing only test-lead and a very little borax-glass as a flux, gave results on cyanide precipitates which mere invariably very low, loss having taken place by slag-absorption and volatilization, as repeated slag-assays failed to bring up results similar to those obtained by other methods. Professor Lodge anil his students made a large number of what he terms " scorification-assays," but which, I would like to point out, have claim to that name only in that they are made in a scorifier, for the charge consists of test-lead, a very considerable quantity of borax-glass (10 grams), at times also of litharge and even charcoal, so that the assays are in reality crucible assays. A scorification-slag proper is an oxide-slag to all intents and purposes, while the slags made by Professor Lodge are borates, certainly acid-slags. It has been our experience since our paper, The Assay of Cyanide Precipitates, was published, that the nature of the assay slag in the crucible assay has a great influence on the result. A " basic " or oxide-slag invariably causes high slag-losses, while an " acid " slag gives very fair results on material containing much zinc. This has also been the experience of a mellknown cyanide chemist with whom I have corresponded on the subject, who found that acid crucible-slags gave good results on zinciferous material, but that the scorification-method, as ordinarily employed, gave high slag-losses. There is a need for concepts and techniques developed specifically for blasting in areas where the rock is loose or highly fractured. Common practice has been to use techniques developed in hard homogeneous rock and reduce the amount and strength of explosive. However, this rule cannot cope with all of the special characteristics of highly fractured rock and has not adequately taken care of the problems of overbreak, gouging, and wall damage. The main problems encountered when blasting in highly fractured rock are controlling the amount of rock broken, minimizing the damage done to the remaining wall material, and adapting blasting methods to rapidly fluctuating ground conditions. In addition, because it frequently needs timber support right into the blasting area, there is also the problem of how not to shoot out the timber when heavy loading is needed in order to offset a loss of impact caused by deflection of the detonation wave off the numerous rock interfaces, and by the absorption of the wave by resilient clay particles. Another consideration is the fact that less attention needs to be directed toward producing satisfactory fragmentation of the broken rock. Those blasting methods designed for breaking hard rock into manageable segments are, as a rule, not needed in highly fractured rock which will usually break along its own numerous fracture lines.

"The Tooele plant is situated at the mouth of Pine Canyon, five miles northeast of Tooele City. The site forms one terminus of the Tooele Valley railway, which runs southwest through Tooele City to Warner, a station on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, thirty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City.An aerial tramway, four miles in length, crosses the Oquirrh Mountains and connects the plant with the Bingham district.The plant consists of a lead-zinc flotation concentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter.SAMPLING MILL The mill is a standard Taylor and Brunton sampling mill, built in two sections, each with a capacity of 100 tons per hour. The building is of steel and concrete, 40x84 feet. A well-equipped pulping, sampling and drying room is attached.All ore is sampled here and then distributed by conveyors to cencentrator, lead smelter and copper smelter bins.CONCENTRATOR This flotation mill is arranged in two units of 500 tons capacity each, one equipped with Callow pneumatic flotation cells, the other with Mineral Separation sub-aeration machines.The feed is maintained as uniform as possible by bedding, after coarse crushing at the sampling mill. Standard practice of ball mill grinding and classification is followed."

TITANIUM-RICH ilmenite deposits, situated in the Allard Lake area in Quebec some 400 miles down the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City and 28 miles north of Havre St. Pierre on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, are undergoing an intensive development program by the joint efforts of the Kennecott Copper Corp. and The New Jersey Zinc Co. Easily accessible ore, amounting to about 125 million long tons and carrying from thirty to forty per cent titanium oxide, has been delimited. Plans are being made for construction of an electric smelter at Sorel, on the south bank of the St. Lawrence midway beween Montreal and Three Rivers, which will produce 650 long tons of high-grade titanium slag and 500 long tons of iron per day from 1500 long tons of ore. Occurrence of ilmenite ore in this area has been known since J. A. Retty reported his geological work in the lower Romaine River area for the Quebec Bureau of Mines in 1941. In this report Dr. Retty mentions the presence of anorthosite rocks, some of which were rich in ilmenite. Claims were staked by several interests but the small showings and complex metallurgy were too formidable for any organization not adequately equipped with capital, metallurgical knowhow, and market outlets. However, Kennecott became interested and through a newly formed Canadian subsidiary, Kennco Explorations Ltd., options were taken up under the direction of A. H. Robertson. THE technical sessions at the Regional Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in San Francisco are to be de- voted LO changes, current or predictable, which may be expected to alter today's practices in mining and metallurgical engineering. Our present condition may be summarized as follows: Capacity to produce is excessive for domestic needs in molybdenum, copper, iron, and oil; sufficient in lead, zinc, and potash; deficient in aluminum, manganese, tungsten, chromium, and tin. Gold and silver are complicated by their use as money. Or, to look at it in another way, the "growth curles" of production, as C. K. Leith emphasizes, characteristically rise slowly at the beginning, show a second stage of rapid growth, and a third stage of leveling off. The third stage is already reached here in coal. copper, iron, lead, and zinc. But still in the second slage are oil, molybdenum, potash, and others.

Discussion of the paper of William H. Emmons, presented at the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910, and printed in Bulletin No. 46, October, 1910, pp. 767 to S37. CHARLES R,. KEYES, Des Moines, Ia. (communication to the Secretary*) :-It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental role played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four phenomena of (1) excessive chloridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals ; (3) the presence of. manganese oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is shown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in. arid or desert regions only ; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the .plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much * Received Nov. 11, 1910.

IT, HAS been my privilege to be Chairman of Engineering Council for very nearly three years, during which time Mr. A. D. Flinn, the. Secretary, and myself, have seen the organization develop until it is functioning smoothly and accomplishing what it can with the money at its disposal. The earliest attempt at what may be called an Engi¬neering Council, of which. I have any knowledge, was made six or seven years ago when the four Founder Societies each appointed two men, who occasionally met to discuss matters submitted to them which were of importance to, the, profession as a whole. I was one of the representatives of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

IN the last two years the E.C.P.D. committees having to do with the inspection of engineering schools for possible accrediting have been concerned with the engineering content of some of the mineral industries courses. Originally the discussion arose with regard to engineering geology, or geological engineering, afterward broadening to metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, agricultural engineering, and other branches not pertinent to this discussion. Some members of visiting committees took the attitude that they probably would have to accredit these types of training as included in the engineering group if they met the average standard set by the mining schools, though they questioned -whether they were really engineering.

LESS than eight months ago at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, attention was called to the demoralizing effect of the abnormal oil production of Mexico on the oil situation in the United States, and it was predicted that this unstabilizing influence would probably become impotent in 18 to 24 months through ' the exhaustion of the principal producing fields of Mexico, unless new fields were found in- the meantime. When this statement was made, the daily production of Mexico was about 600,000 bbl. of crude oil; now it is about 350,000 bbl. No new pools of consequence have been opened, although extensions have been made to two old pools. Over 200,000 bbl., or more than half of the present daily production, comes from Los Naranjos, Amatlan and North Zacamixtle fields, in which practically every well is so affected by salt water that the potential production dropped 50 per cent. in the month of September, clearly indicating that these fields are moving rapidly toward extinction. How much longer the one remaining important pool will last is a matter of conjecture.

NEARLY two hundred 'engineers attended the dinner given at the Hotel Pennsylvania on Monday-evening, Oct. 10, to the delegation from the American l3nginiering Societies to Great Britain and France when the John Fritz Medal was presented to Sir Robert Hadfield and to Eugene Schneider. Representatives of the British and French Governments ' and of foreign engineering societies gave to the event an international aspect unique in gatherings of engineers. Messages from men distinguished in science, statesmanship and diplomacy were read. Medals struck by the French Government were presented to the general chairman of the deputation, to the chairman of each' individual delegation and to the president's of the four Founder Societies. The meeting was regarded by engineers as formally ushering in a definite movement for world unity in the engineering profession. J. Vipond Davies, president of the United Engineering Society, acted as toastmaster. The speakers ,were Ambrose Swasey, Charles F. Rand, F. B. Jewett, A. S. Dwight, John R. Freeman, all members of the deputa- tion; and M. Gaston Liebert, French Consul General; Captain G. H. Armstrong, British Counsel General; G. G. Clapperton, representing the British Institution bf Electrical Engineers, and Prof. Jacques Cavalier, spokesman for the French universities. Among the engineers from other cities was Governor. James Hartness of Vermont.

THE annual meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was marked by the most delightful cordiality and warm spirit of welcome on the part of the members of the New York Section and an equally charming spirit of cooperation and appreciation on the part of the visitors. On Monday Mrs. Ernest H. Wolfes and Mrs. Charles A. Bohn had charge of registration and most efficiently .provided everyone with the necessary tickets and badges. The reception hall and regisfration booth were gay with beautiful flowers that reflected the welcoming spirit one found there. The smooth efficiency with which the whole program ran was due largely to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Donald M. Liddell and Mrs. Louis D. Huntoon, joint chairmen of the Ladies' Committee, and Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee. After registering, the ladies proceeded to- the fifth floor, where they had luncheon with the members of the A. I. M. E. On that day Mrs. W. H. Bassett and Mrs. Lucius W. Mayer were the hostesses.

William M. Courtis, Detroit, Mich. (communication to the Secretary*):—I have a few items to add to the history of the Lake Valley mines. In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. Remarkable as have been the direct results of Danks's puddler, there are some indirect and incidental results, which are well worthy of study for their intrinsic value and suggestiveness. The success of Danks's machine is due mainly to the nature of the lining and the manner in which it is attached to the walls of the revolving chamber. Herein lies Danks's merit and good fortune. Given such a lining, and the success of the machine, as far as puddling iron is concerned, could easily be predicted. Other important results have, however, been obtained with this machine, which, though clearly explicable, were, nevertheless, unanticipated. These are the increased yield of bar-iron over the pig-iron charged, and the elimination of phosphorus, which, though not absolutely complete, is yet more decided than in the case of hand-puddling. As regards the increased yield, this is merely what we have a right to expect if we consider the puddling process to consist in the oxida tion of the carbon and silicon of the pig by the oxygen of the oxide of iron. That this result is attained, nearly to the extent that the theory requires, in Danks's puddler, and has never been more than partially attained by the most careful experiments in band-puddling, points clearly to the fact that the contact of the molten pig-iron with the oxide of iron is much more intimate and complete in the one instance than in the other. The action of puddling in Danks's machine may be considered to be twofold: first, the removal of the carbon, silicon, and phospho rus of the pig, which is the primary object, and, second, the produc tion of wrought iron direct from the ore, which is entirely an inci dental result. Intelligent metallurgists were not long in recognizing in this latter result a fact of deeper import and greater value than the attainment of a perfect puddling process. A new method

With a productive output growing at an annual rate of 8%, the Soviet mining industry should emerge as the world's leader in total mineral output during the 1980's. (The Soviet Union's share in the world's total mineral output in 1973 was estimated at 22 to 23%.) According to estimates by Soviet mining experts, the mineral potential of the Soviet Union will sustain the current 8% annual growth rate in the future.

IN spite of a world production of lead amounting to 1,300,000 tons, of which the United States produces slightly less than one-half, it appears that the mines at present are hardly able to supply the demand. For this there are several reasons. The lead deposits, geologically speaking, were formed comparatively near the surface under conditions of lower temperatures, with the richer deposits often residuary; that is, enriched by surface water, and consequently soon exhausted. Lead is practically absent from a great part of the world. The great Canadian shield, the eastern part of the Dominion, contains practically none. Scandinavia contains no lead. It is absent from geo- logical formations of great age, but does occur in large quantities in the deposits in the Rocky Mountain region. These deposits are, more or less directly, of igneous origin, but here, too, there is a tendency of the lead shoots to concentrate in the upper part, and when they go down the deposits turn to zinc-copper and some other metals. This is one of the best established facts of economic geology. The deposits of the Mississippi Valley district, from Kansas-Oklahoma, to Canada, are in comparatively accessible limestone beds, at a depth seldom more than 500 ft. Therefore, the lead is easily mined but more easily exhausted.
