THE flotative properties of the principal minerals in Michigan's potential iron ores have been investigated to develop methods of beneficiation for the ores. One of these minerals, magnetite, is of considerable importance as a source of iron. Study of its flotation was similar to that of hematite1, another iron mineral in these potential ores. The present research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on magnetite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure magnetite, (3) the development of laboratory procedure and (4) flotation experimentation. Literature on Magnetite Flotation.-For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotation of magnetite can be summarized as follows. The mineral has been floated with pine oil2, and it has also been separated from synthetic mixtures with silicates by the use of the same reagent2. Magnetite and apatite in iron-ore slimes have been separated by flotation of apatite with sodium palmitate3. These data were utilized in the present investigation. Preparation of Magnetite.-The pure mineral was prepared from the magnetic-separator concentrate of an iron ore (obtained from the Witherbee- Sherman Corporation, Port Henry, N. Y.). This concentrate was slowly comminuted with laboratory rolls and pulverizer to pass 65-mesh and was then tabled several times. Tabling yielded a relatively coarse magnetite concentrate, tailing and slimes. The two latter materials were rejected insofar as the present work is concerned, and treatment of the magnetite (table concentrate) was continued by separating it into -65 + 200 and -200-mesh sizes. Separation of the sizes was made by first dry screening and then wet screening. The -200-mesh material was rejected to eliminate possible introduction of error into flotation This paper describes a part of a general investigation into the flotation of Michigan's potential iron ores. The effect of fluid viscosity on the classification of solids in a liquid-solid cyclone was investigated. The separation size was found to be proportional to Additionally, it was found that the prediction of flow rate through a cyclone is dependent on a Reynolds criterion. Above a critical value, the flow can be predicted by a simple equation, whereas, below this value a variable orifice coefficient must be introduced. INTRODUCTION The solid-liquid cyclone is widely used as a device for classification, thickening, and heavy media separations. The more important variables and how they affect the performance of a cyclone are known and have been the subject of several investigations.' In general, these studies have paid little attention to the viscosity and those which have, introduced it through Stokes settling considerations. Systems which contain appreciable amounts of swelling clays exhibit viscosities much greater than water, and in these systems the viscosity term becomes important in determining the separation size. The work described here was done to determine in a Newtonian system the dependence of separation size on viscosity. BACKGROUND The separation size for a cyclone classifier has been related to the parameters of the cyclone by an equation of the form: where a is probably between 1.3 and 1.5, ß is between 0.50 and 0.57, and 6 has a theoretical value of 0.5. where y has a value between 1.8 and 2.0. Although these relationships are empirical, equations that differ only in the exponents have been derived from theoretical considerations. Those interested in the origin of these equations are referred to some of the original work.6,7 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The laboratory apparatus used in this study is pictured diagramatically in Fig. 1. Feed slurry was pumped from an agitated 15-gallon plastic tank by a centrifugal pump driven by 3/4 hp motor. The static pressure of the feedstream and thus the pressure drop through the cyclone was measured on a gage located as close to inlet of the cyclone as possible. TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The airshaft power is a function of the air volume Q cu. ft. per min. and the air- pressure drop p in. water gauge across the airshaft The airshaft pressure drop is calculated by the formula: [ ] wherein R is the air-friction coefficient for the portion of the airshaft 1 ft. deep, 0 ft. in perimeter and A sq. ft. in area, when passing an air volume of Q cu. ft. per minute. G. B. WATERHOUSE,* Buffalo, N. -Y. (written discussion?).-One of the most essential features of rail manufacture is the production of rails that will give good service and be free from failures. To this end rails are made to careful specifications and their manufacture is controlled by rigid inspection on the part of both the producing mill and the railroad or its representative, such as the Hunt special inspection referred to in the paper. Captain Hunt refers to the crescent-shape base failures and describes them as ruptures in the rail flanges extending from the outside inward toward the web. This is hardly correct and may be misleading. It has been shown, over and over again, that the base breaks originating in seams invariably start at the center of the rail base; and run longitudi-nally in varying lengths from 3 to 12 in. and sometimes longer. Most of them are from 5 to 8 in. long and then curve outward to the edge of the flange. The split at the center of the base may exist for an indefinite time and not be discovered until the break shows on top of the flange or the piece of flange breaks off. The. stresses that cause the break are explained in two ways: (1) by the eccentric bearing of the rail base, that is taking contact at one side or edge and bringing excessive strain at the center of the base which starts fracture in any seam that may he present at that point; (2) the split may be due to cross strain in the base where this member is thrown into. compression, as happens where a pair of trucks are on opposite sides of the cross tie or rail-base hearing, and the head is put in tension. A careful study of "split base breaks" shows that fully 95 per cent. occur on the tie bearing, which is further evidence that the above de-scribed causes for the initial break are probably correct. These split base breaks are almost invariably progressive, but always start at the center of the rail-base running longitudinally.

THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

THE solubility of columbium nitride in ? iron has been determined for the temperature range 1191o to 1336°C from the nitrogen content and metallogra-phic examination of a series of Fe-Nb alloys.* (0.0 to 0.92 pct Nb) equilibrated with a purified gas mixture of 1 pct hydrogen in nitrogen. The method is the same as that used by Darken, Smith, and Filer' to determine the solubility of aluminum nitride in y iron. The variation in the furnace temperature during an equilibration period was about ± 2.0°C. Each sample was approximately 1/2 in. wide, 2 in. long, and 1/16 in. thick. A time series at 1200°C using samples of highest columbium content indicated that one day was sufficient for equilibrium; however, to be on the safe side all samples were left in the furnace for either two or three days. Afterequilibration, the samples were brought to room temperature by quenching in water. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. To be in accord with the values reported by Wriedt and Gonzalez2 and the temperature coefficient of our results at higher temperatures, the nitrogen content of iron at 1191oC is assumed to be slightly lower than our experimental value. Our data for the single-phase regions are not sufficiently accurate to establish an interaction coefficient for nitrogen in these alloys. However, the change in nitrogen content with change in alloy content for a number of systems (Fe-N-A1;3,1 Fe-N-Ni;372 Fe-N-Si.3949 Fe-N-V;3,5 Fe-N-Cr;3,6 Fe-N-Mo3,7) has practically the same value for the liquid alloy at a temperature near 1600°C as for the solid alloy at temperatures near 1200oC when the alloy content is below a few percent. On this basis the lines through the single-phase regions have been drawn with a slope corresponding to an increase in nitrogen of 0.0013 pct per 0.1 pct Nb.3 The straight lines through the two-phase regions were drawn with a slope corresponding to a one-to-one atom ratio of nitrogen to columbium in the nitride. Discussion of the paper of H. P. HOWLAND, printed in Bulletin No. 111, March, 1916, pp. 627 to 650. A. H. LEE, Buffalo, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). The statements and results recorded in Mr. Howland's paper can be accounted for by the use of coke with a low sulphur content (0.60 and under). This allows the furnaces to be run on a small volume of acid slag, which it is presumed was done in Mr. Howland's practice. H. A. Brassert has admitted that this was the largest factor in low fuel consumption in his practice. Where the coke contains from 1.00 to 1.25 per cent. of sulphur the situation is quite different and I doubt whether the results mentioned by Mr. Howland could be obtained under such circumstances. ` N. M. LANGDON, Mancelona, Mich. (communication to the Secretary + ).-Gruner's ideal working (which is but a statement of the law first enunciated by Bell) as given in Gordon's Translation of Studies of Blast Furnace Phenomena, "supposes that the reduction of the oxide of iron is effected by the CO only, without intervention of solid carbon." This ideal, if reached, would mean theoretically perfect or 100 per cent. efficiency of reduction. The workings of the large number of furnaces as given in Bell's and Gruner's great works do not show that this standard of perfection ever was reached. This problem has been worked out by the writer for a number of furnaces, and his results, as well as those given by others, all show a failure to reach perfection. Some furnaces, however, approach nearer to perfection than others. The "ideal" as given by Gruner was not stated as a solved problem in blast-furnace practice, but as an ideal to the attainment of which furnace managers should strive. A study of the factors involved from every angle is interesting and instructive and the paper on this subject contributed by H. P. Howland is no exception to the rule. This article is fairly open to criticism, not because of the unique method of presenting the subject, but for the reason that, as the writer conceives, erroneous assumptions are taken which lead naturally to incorrect conclusions.

I HAVE in a previous communication called the attention of the Institute to the geognostical relations of the crystalline iron ores belonging to the Eozoic rocks of North America, at which time I noticed (1) those associated with the gneisses of the Laurentian series, (2) those of the crystalline schists of the Huronian, as seen in Northern Michigan and in many localities along the Appalachians ; (3) those of Southeastern Missouri associated with petrosilex porphyries and schistose rocks, and presumed to be nearly of the same age with those of the Huronian schists; and (4) the highly titaniferous ores of the Norian or Labradorian series from Essex County, N. Y., and from various parts of Canada. It may here be remarked that, although the presence of titanium is most marked in the Norian ores, this objectionable element is sometimes found in the schistose ores of the Huronian, and to a lesser extent in certain Laurentian magnetites. The ores of each of these geological divisions have their individual peculiarities, which serve to distinguish them to such a degree that the magnetites and specular ores of the Laurentian are as dissimilar to those of the Huronian as are the crystalline silicated rocks of the two series. As it happens that these mineralogical dissimilarities correspond to differences in composition and in adaptability to different processes of manufacture, which, in the present condition of the iron industry, are objects of special consideration to metallurgists, it will be seen that these geognostical distinctions become of great practical importance. During the past year I was desired by the Geological Commissioners of Pennsylvania to devote a few weeks to certain geological studies in the eastern part of the State, in the course of which I was enabled to make, with regard to its crystalline iron ores, some observations to which I desire to call the attention of the Institute. I may mention, in passing, that the great South Mountain belt, from the Schuylkill to the Delaware, is composed of Laurentian rocks, in which are found the characteristic ores of the series like those of the Highlands of New Jersey and New York, and of the Adiron-

W. E. RUDER, Schenectady, N. Y.-In 1913 I presented a paper before this society on Grain Growth, and at that time it seemed to me that the only explanation for grain growth was that of critical strain. I do not think I published the photographs at the time, but I made some experiments on the effect of stretching sheets of metal. This allowed for fairly accurate determinations of the amount of cold deformation, At the time I worked-with silicon steel because one could see the change in grain growth with the naked eye. I stretched about 10-samples from 0.5 per cent. to 10 per cent., and, after heating to 1,050° C., I found that the maximum grain growth occurred at about 2 ½ per cent. cold deformation. This I designated "the critical strain" for maximum grain growth. About a year ago I talked with Prof. Jeffries, who explained to me his ideas of grain growth. It occurred to me that it would be a very easy thing to check the strain hypothesis against the strain and temperature hypothesis, if we took a certain number of these strips, strained exactly alike and heated to different temperatures; in that case the maximum grain growth ought to appear at a different percentage of deformation for each temperature. These experiments showed that there was, as Mr. Jeffries shows in his present paper, a decrease in germinative temperature with increased cold deformation. The samples were stretched from ½ to 8 per cent. and heated for 10 hr. in hydrogen. Samples were introduced into a furnace previously heated to temperature. A maximum grain growth was obtained at 5 per cent. deformation, when heated to 750° C.; at 2 ½ per cent. when heated to 800' C.; at 1 1/4 per cent., if heated at 950°C.; and at 5/8 per cent.. when heated at 1,100° C. This shows very clearly that the germinative temperature decreases with the increase in cold deformation. The growth was very much more marked, however, at the high temperature, i.e., the grain grew more rapidly and attained a much larger size than at lower temperature. Discussion of the paper of F. C. LANGENBERG and R. G. WEBBER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 291 to 300. HENRY M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-The results here given are of great interest and are welcome as forming another rivet to increase the stability of our present theories of the constitution and properties of steel. The important discovery is that the hysteresis increases with the fineness of the structure, that is to say with the extent of contact between the particles of ferrite and cementite. All of the specimens except No. 4 consist of ferrite and cementite of different degrees of intimacy of admixture. If hysteresis represents something akin to surface friction, which retards the rotation of the ferrite on the application and release of the magnetizing force, then it is only natural that it should increase as it does with the intimacy of admixture, because it is at the surface of contact of a given particle of ferrite with the neighboring particles of cementite that this friction is to be expected, and of course the extent of surface must in¬crease with the intimacy of admixture. The somewhat greater hardness of specimen 4 than of the others may perhaps he referred to the principle discussed in my paper, Why Does Lag Increase with the Temperature from Which Cooling Starts?' The furnace-cooled specimens were cooled so slowly that the influence of the initial temperature of heating is effaced. But in the air-cooled specimens we have the suggestion that the high temperature, 1,000°, from which the cooling of No. 4 started has prevented the completion of the transformation, with the result that the metal is slightly harder than any of the others. The difference is not to be explained by difference in the fineness of structure, because the whole range of fineness from No. 1 to No. 6 is accompanied by no change in hardness, the only change being an appreciable increase of hardness following the air cooling from 1,000°.

The various methods of by-product coke-manufacture have been quite thoroughly discussed in a number of papers recently published, and I think it would possibly be of interest and value to discuss the growth and probable future of the byproduct coke industry, rather than details of manufacture. The first by-product coke-plant in the United States, consisting of 12 ovens, was put in operation at Syracuse in January, 1893. This installation was followed by one at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895; one at Dunbar, in 1896, and one at Glassport, in 1897. The plant at Syracuse was primarily intended to supply the owners with ammonia for their alkali-works. At Glassport, for the first time, gas was sold for illuminating purposes, although it was mixed with water-gas to make it marketable. The New England Coke & Gas Co. started the plant in Boston in 1899, which was destined to change the whole trend of the establishment of by-product plants, since it manufactured for the first time illuminating-gas suitable for sale without enrichment. This was accomplished by dividing the gas on the battery into two portions. One portion, consisting of the richer part of the gas, was saved for sale, while the remaining, or leaner, portion was used in the battery. This idea was originated by Dr. Schniewind, of the United Coke & Gas Co. The coke was used for domestic, industrial, and locomotive fuel, as its sulphur-content was too high to make it suitable for use in the foundry. The successful operation of this plant led to the building of additional plants at points where the production of illuminating-gas could be sold to advantage and where there was a fair market for the coke-output. The following list of illuminating-gas plants in order of construction will give a good idea of the rapid growth of this method of combined gas- and coke-manufacture: Hamilton, Ohio; Detroit, Mich.; Camden, N. J.; Baltimore, Md.; Chester, Pa.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Duluth, Minn.; Geneva, N. Y.; Chicago, Ill.; Indianapolis, Ind. In addition to these there are now under construction plants at Muncie, Ind.; Joliet, Ill., and Waukegan, Ill., all of which will produce illuminating-gas and metallurgical coke.

Mine models are of great value to the student and to the layman in visualizing underground conditions, and, in a measure, should be just as much a part of the equipment of a mining school as sets of ore specimens, catalogs, or drawings. The chief drawback, as Professor Stock has indicated, is the time and cost of making them. The greatest good in the development of the model comes to the person who makes it, and I have often wondered whether it might not be possible to have each student make one model during his undergraduate career. At the University of Washington we have been collecting sets of mine timbers, made of 6 by 6-in. lumber, illustrating shaft, level, and stope timbering. This work has been done by freshmen. Perhaps each educational institution could specialize in the creation of a certain type of model and exchange its product for that of another school, just as we now do with ore collections. (communication to the Secretary?).-The type of model described by Professor Stoek is admirably suited to exhibits of coal mining in horizontal veins, and fulfills perfectly the three purposes mentioned. As an educational illustration in colleges, especially when the students themselves build the model under the direction of their instructors, it is of the highest value; and as each condition in mining requires special methods to depict properly in a model, the student is compelled to exercise considerable inventive resource to construct a true representation, stimulating the imagination and interest in his subject. Models built for exhibits in lawsuits are usually constructed to show prominently some particular feature of vein formation or geology, or the relation of underground workings to surface property lines, and as such their use is invaluable to the successful litigant. When the litigation is ended, it is natural that the model should be relegated to the basement and frequently destroyed, as data on underground workings are often considered of a private character by the operators; and it is

(communication to the Secretary*).¬I assume that where this valuable paper states, near its end, that "it is not possible to establish a market price, " the author means that no particular price which will fit all conditions and fields can be given. I am not in agreement with Mr. Wyer, however, that the actual value of natural gas leaseholds is "largely a matter of opinion." I would even be willing to express myself very strongly as believing that if we, as experts, cannot give anything closer than a mere opinion, our testimony or reports are not of great value to our clients. I believe, moreover, that by detailed geological examinations and with our latest knowledge of geological structure, principles of natural gas occurrence, etc., we can approach just as near a certainty in natural gas valuations as we can in oil valuations, and much more so than in the valuation of many metal prospects, in which only the upper few feet of the vein has been opened. In other words, we are getting nearer and nearer every year to bringing geology as applied to oil and gas development into the class of an exact science. Mr. Wyer's paper gives an excellent outline for methods of leasehold valuation. Being presumably intended as an outline only, it can be expanded indefinitely by a detailed discussion of the methods of valuation for the four different classes of leaseholds which he mentions: (A) "Producing;" (B) "Protective;" (C) "Reserve;" and (D) "Prospective." This classification is probably as good as can be made in practice. In the producing leaseholds in particular it is easy to establish a market price at which these leaseholds should be bought or sold. The question would arise in any case whether or not the leases are connected with a pipe line or the distance from the pipe line. Assuming that a pipe line already taps the property and that gas is already being sold for a certain figure, this price must be multiplied by the number of thousand cubic feet still "in sight" in the ground, from which is to be deducted (a) bonuses, (b) rentals, (c) royalties, (d) cost of drilling, (e) taxes and

AT high temperatures a deformed polycrystalline metal shows grain-boundary displacement in preference to slip lines.' This has led to the conclusion that overall strain at high temperatures is produced chiefly by grain-boundary displacement. Detailed microscopic examinations of individual grain boundaries have shown many interesting ways by which their displacement occurs; sometimes no grain deformation was observed except possibly in the immediate neighborhood of the boundary. However, X-ray examinations show that at high temperatures subgrain formation occurs;Y he process, generally called polygonization, results from lattice bending and the subsequent climb of dislocations to form low-angle boundaries. Quantitative measures of the grain-boundary displacements show that they make a minor geometrical contribution to the overall strain; the major contribution is made by grain deformation."'" A relationship between grain-boundary displacement and grain deformation was suggested by McLean, who showed how the degree of polygonization would determine the amount of grain boundary displacement: and by Dorn, who showed that for a given creep stress, the amount of grain-boundary shear was related to the overall strain and was independent of temperature.' Although the grain-boundary displacement may make a small geometrical contribution to overall strain, it may still be the rate-controlling factor in high-temperature creep. If in general grain-boundary displacement and grain deformation are dependent quantities, then the designer of a creep-resistant metal would like to know whether it is more desirable to strengthen the matrix of the grain or to increase the strength of its boundary. The widespread interest in the relationship between temperature and grain-boundary displacement makes it desirable to test the generality of Dorn's result6 that the ratio of grain-boundary displacement to overall strain is independent of the temperature for a given creep stress. In this investigation p-brass was used because it produces sharp grain-boundary displacements above 400°C. Since B-brass undergoes an order-disorder transformation which abruptly strengthens the grain, it is an excellent metal for determining whether grain-boundary displacement or grain deformation is the rate-controlling factor in creep. THE solubility of graphite in y-iron has been determined by several workers'12 with reasonable agreement. With the increasing use of more complex steels, it is necessary to understand more fully the thermodynamics of the austenite phase. The activity of carbon in a number of alloys is known but the maximum solu- bility of graphite has only been measured by Sohnchen and piwowarsky3 for Fe-Ni and Fe-Si alloys. Recently, Chipman and Brush reviewed the published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite and also obtained expressions for calculating the solubility of graphite in Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, and Fe-Si alloys. On comparing the theoretically derived solubilities with the limited results of Sahnchen and Piwowarsky, it was found that the agreement for Fe-C-Si was excellent but there was considerable discrepancy for Fe-C-Ni and no data for Fe-C-Co. It was therefore decided to measure the solubility of graphite in a series of Fe-Ni and Fe-Co alloys. The alloy samples were made up by induction melting a high-purity master alloy under an inert atmosphere in an alumina crucible and drawing the molten metal into four-bore alumina tubes. Using this technique, it was possible to form alloy rods approximately 2 in. long and 1/18 in. in diam. Sixteen lengths of fine rod could be made without solidifying the master alloy. These were then allowed to cool under the inert atmosphere before being sectioned. The samples were packed in a graphite crucible with spectroscopic graphite powder, together with a piece of pure iron foil. Dry hydrogen, which had been saturated with isopropyl alcohol at room temperature, was passed over the crucible at 1000°C for 72 hr. At the end of the 72 hr argon displaced hydrogen in the reaction tube and the crucible was quickly pushed to the water-cooled end. The samples were thoroughly cleaned of the adhering graphite and analyzed. The pure iron samples always contained 1.5 0.02 pct C, which compares favorably with the data of smith2 and

WHILE the installation of mine bulkheads to retain water under high pressure is y no means a rarity, the following points Which arose in the designing and placing of two of these bulkheads may be of interest: The Hibernia magnetite mine, located about 40 miles west of New York, in the State-of New Jersey, is partly filled with water. This mine is located on an ore lens, the outcrop of which is over a mile long. The ore has been mined from this lens from the surface to a depth of more than 1,500 ft. It was held desirable to- separate the old workings from the new, and to allow the former to fill to the 850-ft. level. Two weak places existed between the new and old workings below this level: namely, a temporary bulkhead on the 10th level and a rock bulkhead of indeterminate thickness on the 16th level. When the matter of allowing the old workings to fill was investigated, the fact was developed that if these old workings were filled, the bulkhead on the 10th level would be subjected to a water pressure of about 50 lb. per square inch, and that 200 lb. per square inch would act on the 16th-level bulkhead. As the above-mentioned barriers were not deemed of sufficient strength to permit of these pressures, it became necessary to design and install new bulkheads. Design As the 16th-level bulkhead was required to withstand a pressure of 200 lb. per square inch, it presented some difficulties. A careful consideration of the various types of mine dams now in use led to the adoption of a design of the form of a truncated wedge. In this, the pressure side of the dam is of greater area than the back, so that the resultant action is similar to driving the wedge. By cutting generous skewbacks in the walls, roof, and floor, this type in reality becomes an invisible arch. The wedge feature tends to compress the materials in the bulkhead, thereby adding to its imperviousness.

(communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Johnson recognizes that connate waters must be driven, outward toward the earth's surface. He considers the ascent due to the settling and packing of the underlying sediments and to the formation of gas within the rocks, supplemented by abyssal pressures. The origin of the methane in the sedimentary strata probably is not simple. There are three possible modes of origin: (1) as marsh gas formed near the surface and entrapped in the sediments; (2) from abyssal sources; (3) by the decomposition of organic matter buried in the sediments. The abyssal source is generally negligible, and in all cases doubtful. The third origin is the most important in the gas fields. A fourth mode of origin, by the dissociation of liquid hydrocarbons, frequently has been suggested, but it is improbable, because crude oils are exothermic. Therefore they have no tendency, to split or decompose at low temperatures, as do endothermic substances, such as coal, which is geologically by the loss of methane, water, and carbon dioxide. This cannot happen to a hydrocarbon until its temperature of dissociation (" cracking point") is reached, which is over 250'.C. for the most easily cracked hydrocarbons and over 400° C. for others. Engler says that the dissociation of fats and waxes into oils is an endothermic process, thereby unconsciously nullifying his own theory of the dissociation of these substances at low temperatures. However, recently I have found reason to think that heat is liberated by the disruption of the molecules of fats and waxes, as it is in the molecular decomposition of the substances of wood, coal, etc. If this tentative opinion is correct, and Engler wrong, then it seems that the Engler-Höfer hypothesis of the origin of oil becomes not only possible, but even probable.

In the manufacture of charcoal-blooms, washing or cleansing of the ore from adhering gangue has been practiced for many years. A sluice-box is even to-day used for that purpose in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. For the Lake Champlain bloomaries hard magnetic ores are crushed with stamps and then sluiced or jigged in hand-jigs. The stamps used in the Lake Champlain region are of the most primitive kind. They consist of a trip-hammer, dropping on a perforated cast-iron plate, through which the crushed ore escapes. Only friable rock can thus be successfully treated. To render the raw ore friable, a calcining or burning in piles on a bed of cordwood is resorted to. An expense of 35 cents per ton of crude rock treated is thus incurred. The crushed ore is shovelled or otherwise fed into jigs without previous sizing, except such as is incidental to crushing through the perforated bottom of the stamping-machine. In jigging this ore, it is allowed to pass through the bedding into the "hutch." The tailings are scraped off and wasted. They contain a large percentage of fine ore. In many instances, this is regained by subsequent sluicing. Such was the condition of the industry, when the writer's attention was first called to it in 1882. No attempt had been made to introduce into thiS branch of ore-dressing the notable improvements adopted in concentrating the ores of other metals. The result of the writer's investigations was the building in 1882 of the "Crown Point Separator." At the Crown Point Mines, N. Y., lean ore unfit for the blastfurnace (containing less than 331/3 per cent. of iron), was concentrated and used in the bloomary connected with the mines. The ore was burned here as elsewhere, and treated as described. The plant designed by the writer for Crown Point, is nearly a counterpart of that since erected by Messrs. Copeland and Bacon, contractors, for the Theal mine, Putnam County, New York, which is illustrated by the accompanying plate. The only difference is in
