Various chapters already written in the history of development of the North Dome of Kettleman Hills are monotonoysly identical in the one underlying' theme of conservation of oil and gas. Discovered on Oct. 4, 1928, by Milham Exploration Co. with its wildcat Elliot No. 1, the field has been subjected to practically every modern form of production restraint in the name of conservation. The record thus far developed shows that conservation was had for a time, at a price; and that unitiza-tion must be blessed by single ownership or 100 per cent participation to be effective. In fact, incomplete unitization places a heavy handicap upon its participants in the competitive development that follows. Shut-in Agreement of July 25, 1929 Not long after discovery at Kettleman but after the Continental Oil Co. and the Standard Oil Co. had completed several producing wells in the discovery group, came the so-called Shut-in Agreement negotiated at the instance of the Department of the Interior. This agreement became effective July 25, 1929. The fundamental purpose of the agreement was to prevent bringing on production of some 30 wells then being drilled and forestall a flood of Kettleman oil on the market. A cooperative scheme was developed whereby wells in the discovery group would continue to produce. Two of them could not be shut in. Drilling wells would be completed to a water shutoff in top of Temblor and operations suspended. Producing wells would contribute the value of 10 to 25 per cent of their production to the owners of suspended qualifying wells. The percentage rate of drainage contribution was left to a committee or umpire. Some acreage was not placed under the agreement. This same acreage later did not come into the Kettleman Unit Agreement. Several wells on this acreage did not contribute to the drainage fund. The total amount of oil produced during the 17 months of the shut-in agreement, by Milham, Continental and Standard from wells in the discovery group, was 5,297,262.22 bbl. The total amount paid out in "drainage" contributions was $2,046,048.18, representing sales value of 1,266,044.06 bbl. of oil.

The property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, about 75 miles to the eastward from the port of Chafñaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges, and the mine and metallurgical plant are both on the westerly slope of the outer or western range. Mean elevation of the mine is 10,500 ft., while at the plant the elevation ranges from 9445 to 9700 ft. A meter gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 94 miles, of which 57.79 miles are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. and the remainder of the road is controlled by the State. Development of the Potrerillos mine and installation of the metallurgical equipment presented unusual difficulties due to the arid nature of the country, high altitude and remoteness of the location from any considerable center of population. As a primary step it was necessary that railroad transportation be provided in order that mine development and plant construction could go forward on an economical basis. Provision of an adequate supply of water for domestic and metallurgical uses involved the construction of approximately 178 miles of pipe lines, all of which have their sources at altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 14,000 ft. above sea level and traverse rough and difficult terrane. Water for metallurgical use is brought to Potrerillos from the Ola River, a stream originating in the high cordillera to the eastward from the property. It is delivered by means of a steel pipe line, 32 miles long, having diameters ranging from 22 to 36 in. Domestic water is supplied to the various camps through a system of pipe lines aggregating 146 miles in length, the Ola water being unfit for this purpose. These conductors gather water from numerous springs in the high mountains to the eastward from Potrerillos and deliver it to the mine, the reduction works and the port at Barquito. A series of 0.21 pci carbon steel melts was processed under conditions which sinzulated industrial vacuum degassing practices. The results indicated that the efliciency of carbon deoxidation was not significantly increased by vacuunz degassing at chamber pressures below 100 torr. The two common phenomena of vacuu?rz carbon deoxidation, i.e.,an unaccountable carbon loss and nonequilibrium deoxidation, were observed in this study. Oxygen from adsorbed and chenzically combined water of certain refractory structures was probably responsible for the unaccourttable carbon drop. The nonequzlibrium deoxida-tion phenomenon was adequalely correlated by a bubble nucleation )mechanism. Although the major limiting factor in oxygen removal from these melts contained in alumina crucibles could not be eslablished with certainty, there was some evidence that melt-refractory interactions were not the most imp-portant limiting factor. CONSIDERABLE attention has been given to the use of carbon in conjunction with vacuum degassing* as a deoxidation technique. An advantage of utilizing the reaction: for deoxidation purposes is that the reaction product is gaseous and hence can be effectively removed from the melt. The pressure dependency of Eq. [I] is illustrated by the expression for the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, K: where pco is the partial pressure of carbon monoxide, and hc and ho are, respectively, the Henrian activities of carbon and oxygen in molten steel. The thermodynamic aspects of the C-0 reaction in molten Fe-C-0 alloys have been investigated extensively. Theoretical predictions based on Eq. [2] indicate that, at the chamber pressures reached in most vacuum degassing units, carbon is the most effective deoxidizer that can be obtained. ~ornak' has compared industrial values of carbon and oxygen contents with values calculated from theory, and has shown that on a commercial basis vacuum carbon deoxidation has not achieved the degree of success that is predicted from theoretical considerations of the C-0 reaction. The use of industrial units to determine the reason for this deviation is limited by economics and the difficulty in controlling critical process variables. Therefore laboratory-sized experiments in this area should yield valuable information. Investigations on vacuum carbon deoxidation have been made in experiments conducted under vacuum induction melting conditions where pressures in the low micron range, long treatment times, exposure to highly dynamic vacuum conditions, and relatively quiescent bath conditions have been maintained. Inve~ti~ators~~~ utilizing vacuum induction melting for the production of high-purity iron by carbon deoxidation have concluded that, under high vacuum conditions, melt-refractory interactions constantly supply oxygen to the melt. Thus, it has been suggested that refractory dissociation rather than the C-0 reaction establishes the lowest possible oxygen content of a melt. Thomas and Moreau4 and Bennett, Protheroe, and ward5 have studied carbon deoxidation of Fe-C alloys melted in magnesia crucibles under reduced pressures. The results of both studies differed considerably from those predicted by theory, and the limiting factor for lower oxygen contents was attributed to melt-refractory interactions. Because the refractory material used in both investigations was magnesia, no quantitative measure of crucible reaction could be made and the amount of carbon consumed during treatment was utilized as an indirect indication of the extent of crucible reaction. Studies concerned with the determination of the minimum oxygen content attainable in pure iron and Fe-C alloy material vacuum-induction-melted in various crucible materials have also been conducted."' The suitability of a crucible refractory for use under vacuum conditions appears to depend upon the major refractory constituent, the amount and type of impurity oxides, and the composition of the melt. Meadowcroft and Elliott9 have presented a theoretical review of the type and extent of various refractory reactions which should be considered in vacuum refining. ~eadowcroft'~ considered the vacuum degassing process to be dependent upon the "carbon boil" and has proposed that a part of the difference between the experimental and theoretical results for vacuum carbon deoxidation may be explained by the fact that the pco term in Eq. The coal-mining districts of Washington are mainly west of the Cascade Mountains; Fig. 1. The mines are on the foot hills of the slope, the lignite fields of Lewis and Thurston counties extending into the valleys west of the mountains. An exception is the Roslyn field, a small but important area on the eastern slope. If western Washington is divided into three areas from north to south, the bituminous coal fields and most of the active operations will be found largely in the middle area. The southern portion contains lignites over a large area. In the northern portion, mining is practically restricted to one mine, the Bellingham, which is working a subbituminous coal seam near the city of Bellingham. The degree of alteration that the coal of a particular field has undergone may be gaged roughly by the position of the field with reference to the Cascade Mountains. The lignites of Tenino, Tono, Mendota, and Castle Rock, on the railway line connecting Seattle and Portland, occur in a region of low relief, in which the Eocene coal measures have suffered only minor disturbances. Subbituminous coals occur in the foot hills, as at Renton, Newcastle, and Bellingham. Coalg high in fixed carbon are found nearer the mountains, where the measures have been sharply tilted and folded, as at Black Diamond and Carbonado. The two typical anthracite fields are located still higher, in the rugged mountains where outcrops appear both in deep gorges and on ridges at elevations approaching 5000 ft. At Carbonado is found the only semianthracitc seam worked on a commercial basis. The occurrence of this seam in a region of bituminous coal is due to the nearness of an igneous sill, which has changed its character from bituminous to semianthracite. Purpose of Paper On account of the various faults and dips and the varying nature of the wall rock, many difficulties are encountered in mining and winning the coal. The paper gives some of the methods used in mining and, in some detail, the conditions that affect the efficiency of these methods.

ECONOMIC deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden, Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definitely stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers.' Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer. It increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output. Strain-induced grain boundary migration was studied in a series of silicon-iron (3% pct Si) bicrystals of controlled orientations. Each bicrystal was given a 7 pct cold-rolling strain rind annealed at 1100°C. The direction of boundary migration was found to depend on orientation; results for several orientations related by a common [110] axis are given. Analysis of the micrographic and X-ray data is made in terms of the residual strain-energy densities within the crystals (energy per unit volurne) and a driving force on the boundary due to an energy density difference across the boundary. Relative strain energies were obtained for the various orientations investigated. A CHROME-acetic acid electroetching method for revealing dislocation sites in silicon iron was previously applied to clarify the structural features and the energetics involved in strain-induced grain boundary migration.',' The present paper is a continuation of this study, but is primarily concerned with the influence of crystal orientation. Sperry, as reported by Beck,3 attempted to determine the factors that influence the preferred growth of one grain over another in aluminum due to strain-induced boundary migration. He found that the particular grain of a pair which work hardened more was invaded, although exceptions to this correlation were noted. The index of work hardening was determined from microhardness measurements of each grain before and after cold-rolling. In the present study, orientation itself was taken as a useful variable for studying the behavior of individual grains in a bicrystal and the direction of boundary migration, since the extent of work hardening is orientation dePendent." The effect of strain on boundary migration is evident from a consideration of driving forces. Thus, in the absence of inclusions, the driving force (per unit area of boundary) for growth of grain A into grain B when a bicrystal is strained and annealed may be expressed as follows:2

In May, 1850, the first gold from the Comstock lode was discovered in the sands near the Carson river. It had been washed down by natural agencies, through Gold Caflon, from the decomposed rock of the ledge above. Within a few weeks, the precious metal was traced more than three miles in shallow deposits along the bed of the canon, from the river to the Devil's Gate-—a narrow, rocky cleft, notable to the teamsters of a later day chiefly as the place where " Uncle Jimmy Fair" collected high tolls, and could not reduce the rates, because " this was all he had for the education of his poor children." From 1850 to 1857, a fluctuating band of miners, whose number varied from twenty to two hundred, washed the Gold Canon placers with rockers and long-toms, making four to five dollars a day each until the last-named year, when the deposits were in great measure exhausted. The chief settlement of these miners was at Johntown. During only a third of the year was the water-supply sufficient for their work. The remainder of the time they utilized in desultory prospecting of the hills and in occasional forays for supplies among the Mormons in Carson valley. In 1857, the Grosch brothers discovered the Comstock lode at some point, now unknown, in Gold Hill, but their discovery perished with them. Early in 1858, the " Pioneer Quartz Company," having located several of the small surface-veins around Silver City (whose connection with the main lode has never been definitely shown), built an arrastra, and worked some of their ore; but the returns were so small that they soon abandoned this business. STAINLESS iron, as mild stainless steel is usually called, an alloy ranging from 11.50 to 15.00 per cent chromium with carbon under 0.12 per cent, has been considered to be not appreciably affected in respect to corrosion resistance by heat treatment. This metal, while one of the most widely used of the "straight" chromium stainless alloys, has failed in many applications because of insufficient information regarding heat treatment. These failures have been attributed to many possible causes from an inherent lack of resistance to corrosion and misapplication to mysterious electrolytic effects or comparatively minute non-metallic inclusions. Many uses for a steel with such excellent physical properties is are latent in this alloy have been lost on account of corrosion failures which could have been avoided by applying proper heat treatment. The alloy has not received the recognition or attention it should because of the fact that' the details of its metallurgical behavior were not thoroughly understood. Response to heat treatment of the steel is well known as regards tensile properties, 1,2 but its application has been for improvement in tensile characteristics or on account of machining considerations rather than for corrosion prevention. The potential user of this steel has not been clearly advised in papers, either technical or commercial, that have been written about it in the last 10 years or more, of particular features that are of prime importance in developing the excellent properties of this metal. The data to be presented in this paper are concerned mainly with the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion resistance, but a study has also been made of the concurrent microstructural changes and an explanation developed for the phenomena revealed, as well as a correlation to the other physical properties-hardness, tensile characteristics and impact strength. Stainless steel, largely used for cutlery purposes, an alloy of approximately 13.00 per cent Cr with 0.30 per cent C, must be hardened and the surface prepared by polishing or pickling for best resistance to staining and corrosion.3 Monypenny reports that a loss of hardness is

A preferred orientation is known to occur frequently in the columnar zone of castings. This has been attributed to a preferred direction of growth. However, no satisfactory mechanism was proposed by which the preferred direction of growth led to the preferred orientation. The purpose of this work has been to establish this mechanism. It has been found that in general the observed preferred orientations only develop when the preferred directions of growth reveal themselves by dendritic growth. A mechanism based on this premise is found to be in agreement with the experimental data obtained in the course of this work. WHEN a liquid metal is allowed to solidify in a mold, it usually freezes in three stages, distinguished from each other by the size and shape of the grains. The first zone to freeze (the chill zone near the mold wall) consists of relatively fine grains that are equiaxed in shape and random in orientation. The next zone consists of crystals that are elongated in the direction of heat flow, i.e., normal to mold wall. These crystals are much larger in cross section than the crystals of the chill zone and have a very strongly preferred orientation. This is the columnar zone. The final zone, which is absent in very pure metals, is again equiaxed and randomly oriented, but usually has a much coarser grain size than the chill zone. The purpose of this study is to describe and account for the crystal size and orientation in the columnar zone. The occurrence of a preferred orientation in the columnar zone is well known, and in 1940, Greninger' suggested that it is apparently related to dendritic growth although at that time the only data were for metals with the face-centered-cubic structure. Table I shows that the direction of dendritic growth and the crystal axis that follows the heat flow direction coincide in all cases so far studied. The term "dendritic growth" is used here to represent the branched type of morphology that is characteristic of growth into supercooled melts.' In addition to the supercooling which is necessary before nucleation will occur at the mold wall, the necessary supercooling for continued dendritic growth can be provided in a mold by heat flow into the already formed solid at an interface whose Liquidus temperature is depressed by an accumula-

THAT metallographic structures analogous to the martensite of steel may be found in certain copper-aluminum and copper-tin alloys has been known for many years; similar structures recently were found in certain copper-zinc alloys.1 In all three of these alloy systems the martensite structures result from transformation of the metastable ß phase when the speed of cooling from the ß range is sufficiently high to suppress decomposition into equilibrium phases. ? In the normal decomposition of solid solutions into equilibrium phases, diffusion is needed to bring about the necessary changes in concentration, and the rate of reaction falls almost to zero at temperatures slightly above room temperature. The rates of reaction for martensite processes, however, are not dependent upon temperature; the transformation does not require readjustments of concentration. For example, the marten-site transformation in 60:40 (ß) copper-zinc does not begin until the temperature has dropped to about minus 30° C., and then continues down to minus 130° C. and probably even at lower temperatures.1 Further-more, martensite processes apparently proceed only while the tempera-ture is falling, within the proper range, and cease completely while the temperature is held constant; ? and they cannot be suppressed by extremely rapid cooling although the rate of cooling for some alloys may be increased to over 10,000 times the critical cooling velocity. Isaitschew, Kaminsky and Kurdjumow2 account for these observed behaviors of martensite processes by postulating that the mechanism " . . . consists in a regular rearrangement of the lattice in such a way

The steady-state creep behaviov of zirconium and zivcaloy-2 was examined in the temperature vatlge 520° to 620°C A1 low stresses the creep rates were cimracterized by a linear stress dependence; at highev stresses the stress dependence was much more pronounced. Temnperature-cycling tests yielded values for the aclivation enevgy for creep. Various tlzeories were examined in the ligltt of- the experimental re-sults and it mas concluded that the low-stress creep behavior is the result of the stress-direcled diffusion of vacancies along gain boundaries. It has been observed,"&apos; usually under conditions of high temperature and low stress, that creep deformation can occur for which the steady-state creep rate is linearly dependent on the applied stress. For magnesium and certain magnesium alloys, Harris and ones&apos; and ones&apos; have argued that this type of creep occurs by mass transfer as a result of the stress-induced generation and migration of vacancies, along a gradient defined by the stress direction. Jones&apos; demonstrated that the rate-controlling diffusion path is sensitive to grain size and temperature, and that by suitable control of these variables creep could occur by vacancy diffusion either predominately along grain boundaries or through the lattice. Recently, Jones3 suggested from an examination of limited high-stress data for zircaloy-2, composition in Table I, that significant diffusion creep could occur at low stresses, at least between 375" and 500°C, controlled by grain boundary vacancy diffusion. This process could have an important implication in assessing the role of zirconium alloys as a structural or cladding material in certain classes of nuclear reactors, since it predicts creep deformation far in excess of any estimates based on extrapolating slip creep data from higher stress levels. If the diffusion creep process occurs it should be possible to describe the total steady-state creep rate of zirconium and its alloys as the sum of two terms, Eq. [I]; the first term relates to a slip creep process important at high stresses and which is manifested by a much more pronounced dependence of creep rate on stress4 than diffusion creep and the second to a process controlled by mass transfer,5&apos;6 dominant at low stresses: where A and BI are parameters which can depend on structure, Ql and Q2 are the activation energies for the particular creep process occurring, and n describes the sensitivity of the creep rate on stress. It is the purpose of this paper to present some direct experimental evidence in support of this view. It is recognized that other analytical approaches have been proposed to explain data of this kind and these will also be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Flat creep specimens (gage length 1 by 0.25 by 0.02 in. approx) were prepared from cold-rolled, argon-remelted, crystal bar zirconium and cold-rolled commercial-grade zircaloy-2, the analyses of which are given in Table I. The specimens were annealed at a pressure of < 10-5 Torr at temperatures from 625" to 675°C for 2 hr and slow-cooled. This treatment produced stable grains of average size (defined here by the average linear intercept) of for zirconium and -4xin. (-10 p) for zircaloy-2. The specimens were tested in a dead load tensile creep rig. The stress was maintained constant by adjusting the applied load after approximately each 1 pct of strain. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than +1°C. This system had a small thermal lag, so that rapid temperature changes were possible. Three confined five-spot miscible displacements at unity, favorable, and unfavorable mobility ratios were conducted in a shallow, water-saturated sandstone of Pennsylvan-ian age near Chandler, Okla. These studies, plus associated laboratory experiments, were designed to measure miscible displacement performance in a controlled natural system, using known scaling criteria to develop an approach to modeling the heterogeneous field system. We have concluded from these studies that: (I) displacement efficiency in the field is a pronounced function of mobility ratio, indicating that miscible fingering observed in simple laboratory models occurs in the field: (2) field displacements can be quantitatively predicted by scaled laboratory models if the degree and location of field permeability variations are preserved in the models: and (3) arbitrary simplifications of heterogeneity will not necessarily predict observed displacement efficiency, and the simpler the model, the more optimistic the prediction. INTRODUCTION Many processes to achieve miscible displacement of reservoir oil by injected fluids have been conceived and field tested by the oil industry. Among the better known are high-pressure gas, enriched gas, and LPG banks. The simplest form of miscible displacement—one fluid miscibly displacing another fluid of different viscosity but the same density—has been studied extensively in homogeneous laboratory models. Observations of unstable fingering have been made which explain the significant decrease in displacement efficiency as the mobility ratio (ratio of displacing fluid mobility to displaced fluid mobility) increases. General industry experience with field tests of miscible displacement projects, mostly LPG banks, has been premature solvent breakthrough and lower than predicted production rate increases. These results have been attributed to either unstable fingering, unusual or unexpected permeability stratification, or both. Miscible displacement data in a controlled natural system have never been reported, however. Also, it has not been shown that properly designed and constructed laboratory models quantitatively predict field-scale behavior. The purpose of the combined field and laboratory ex- periments reported in this paper is twofold. The first was to measure miscible displacement performance at different mobility ratios in natural rock approaching field size under precise, controlled conditions. The second purpose was to utilize known scaling criteria plus several approaches to heterogeneity to model the field. Comparison of model and actual field results should then determine whether or not the laboratory phenomena (manifested by miscible displacement efficiency) are exhibited in large, natural rock systems. We carried out our program by first locating a shallow, water-saturated reservoir whose rock properties were representative of oil-bearing reservoirs. Detailed reservoir description by core analysis and interference testing showed the field site to be heterogeneous. A sequence of controlled, aqueous-phase miscible displacements was conducted at unity, favorable and unfavorable mobility ratios. A central, confined pattern was used to obtain the displacement data. A laboratory program using sand-packed models was conducted to determine the modeling criteria necessary to simulate field behavior of miscible displacement in a heterogeneous system. SCALING THEORY The detailed derivations and descriptions of the scaling laws that apply to laboratory models of reservoirs are adequately described elsewhere, so the following discussion will be restricted to facets of importance in this study. For a displacement in which one liquid miscibly displaces another, the following dimensionless groups are required to have the same numerical value in the model as in the field: The model also must be geometrically similar to the field, be spatially oriented the same as the field (same dip angle), and have the same initial and boundary conditions as the field (same initial fluid saturations and same injection-production well arrangement). When these conditions are satisfied, the theory predicts that at dny dimensionless time (pore volumes of produced fluids) the dimen-sionless flow potential and dimensionless fluid concentrations will be identical at all dimensionless spatial locations within the model and the field. If this prediction is correct, then the local dimensionless velocities must be identical, thus the instantaneous fraction of displaced fluid produced and the cumulative recovery expressed as fraction of original fluids in place must be identical at all dimensionless times. The effect of netltron irracliation on mart ensite transformation in the iron-nickel system was studied by means of electrical resistance and magnetic induction measuremertts. Irradiation lowers the M8 temperature of the allay, causes changes in the electrical and magnetic properties of the high-temperature phase which indicate either an accelemtion of phase separation or a clustering of nickel, and enhances strain recovery on specimens partially transformed to martensite prior to irradiation. Possible mechanisms to account for the effects; are discussed. 1 HERE is a good deal of evidence to indicate that neutron irradiation is capable of affecting phase changes in metals and alloys. While the mechanism of the effect often is not well understood, such studies hold promise of improving our understanding not only of irradiation damage but also of the phase changes involved. To date systematic and detailed investigations have been made of the influence of nuclear radiation on order-disorder transformations in the copper-gold, nickel-manganese, and copper-zinc system, and on precipitation reactions in the copper-iron, nickel-beryllium, and copper-beryllium system.&apos; These solid-state reactions are diffusion controlled and the results can be explained largely on the basis of enhanced diffusion due to the presence of irradiation produced vacancies. Reversion of low-temperature eutectoid phases to the high-temperature phase has been observed in the fissionable uranium-molybdenum and uranium-niobium systems.2 Here it is necessary and logical to postulate a displacement spike mechanism to account for the effect. The only case of irradiation induced diffusionless transformation in metals is the allo-tropic transformation of p to a tin reported by Flee-man and Dienes. 3 They found that neutron irradiation markedly decreases the incubation time for transformation, but the mechanisnl is not well understood. Another diffusionless transformation which one might expect to be influenced by neutron irradiation is the martensite transformation. This transformation is known to be sensitive to strain, structural hardening, and the presence of imperfections.6,7 Since the transformation is diffusionless, one also

THE large increase in the wages of mine workers makes it imperative that all factors tending to limit production per miner be eliminated, if possible. The trolley and storage-battery locomotive, mining machine, hoisting engine, mining system, etc. have increased the possible output per man. But this output is still limited by the capacity of the hoisting engine and cable and by the size of the mine car. The superiority of skip hoisting in metal mining is shown by its almost universal adoption. By varying the size of skip and the rope speed, any desired hoisting tonnage can be secured and, since only one kind of material is handled and breakage is unimportant, the loading of the skips can be easily and cheaply effected from bins into which the cars are dumped. The cars may then be designed to fit the conditions in the mine instead of being a compromise between hoisting and mining conditions, very likely suiting neither. In coal mines, the usual practice has been to hoist the car to the surface, either on platform or self-dumping cages. Of late years the number of skip-hoisting plants in coal mines has been rapidly increasing, but there is more or less inertia to overcome in establishing so radical a change in practice; also the earlier skip operations were not uniformly successful. As a result, it became evident that metal-mining practice would require radical modification before skip hoisting could be successfully used in coal mining.

THE electrical properties of porous conductors have been studied ever since such materials, usually prepared by pressing and sintering of metallic powders, obtained practical importance. In most cases, however, the results have not been easy to interpret because of the great number of independent variables such as powder size, pressure, pressing rate and temperature, subsequent thermal history, porosity, and so on, which enter into the fabrication of industrially desirable materials. In recent years an interpretation of these properties has become of interest because the electrical properties of many new substances, prepared as fine powders by crystallization from the vapor phase or by reactions in the solid state at high temperatures, have to be determined on porous samples formed from the powder. Since theoretically significant information must refer to the fully dense state of the material, it is important to relate the electrical properties measured on such porous samples to those expected for a sample of 100 per cent density. A simple theory for the porosity dependence of the electrical conductivity and the Hall effect was recently proposed by Juretschke, Landauer, and Swanson.&apos; Their model, assuming a distribution of pores of equal size and shape, sufficiently far apart so that each pore is embedded in a region of uni-
