THIS note describes an unusual result obtained in an electron microscope investigation of cavities produced in commercial type 304 stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor (ETR) at 290°C to a high neutron flu-ence, 6 x loz1 n per sq cm. The analysis of the steel used is given in Table I. The unusual result is that the calculated quantity of helium gas produced by transmutation during the irradiation, 12 ppm, is less than one-tenth the amount of gas necessary to balance the surface tension of the observed cavities produced in the steel during ETR irradiation. Therefore, the cavities would be expected to behave like voids; however, they behave like "gas filled" bubbles. The maximum quantity of helium produced in the steel by B" transmutation was 8 ppm. In addition, the amount of helium formed by (n, (1) fast neutron reactions with the major alloy constituents and nitrogen was calculated to be 4 ppm based on the tabulated differential or effective fission-averaged cross sections of elements in type 304 stainless steel irradiated in typical thermal reactors.', In previous investigations concerning commercial austenitic stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor, the amount of helium gas calculated to be produced by transmutation has always been significantly greater than the amount calculated on the basis that the bubbles were gas filled, PPs= 2y/R. The balance of the gas was assumed to be in bubbles smaller than could be detected on the electron micrographs. Accordingly, the bubbles were attributed to helium produced from transmutation of impurity boron by thermal neutrons. These bubbles were not uniformly dispersed in the matrix but were located principally at grain boundaries, or were radially positioned around a few precipitates located in the matrix and at the grain bundaries., 4 Voids have also been observed in austenitic stainless steel irradiated at high temperature to high neutron fluences in the EBR-I1 and Dounreay Fast Reactors. The voids were uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. The amounts of helium gas produced by transmutation during these irradiations were less than one-tenth the amounts needed to balance the surface tension of the voids formed by the fast reactor irradiation. The fast reactor results are quite analogous to those reported here for the ETR irradiated steel. Electron microscope examination of the fast reactor irradiated material after a 1 hr postirradiation annealing at 900°C disclosed that essentially all the voids had been eliminated. The authors stated that the voids had developed due to the high concentration of vacancies produced during irradiatin., 6, ' The microstructure of the ETR irradiated material as-tested at 75O°C, Fig. 1, contained about 2 X lot5 cavities per cm3 with an average diameter of 110A. With the Van der Waals b correction and y = 1500 ergs per cm2, 300 ppm He would balance the surface tension of the observed cavities. Stereoscopic examination of the electron micrographs showed that the cavities were neither preferentially located near the grain boundaries nor highly concentrated at specific regions or precipitates. The cavities were nearly uniformly distributed throughout the matrix, on dislocations and at grain boundaries. These observations imply that the cavities were not the sole results of B'O

P. S. ROLLER,* College Park, Md.-The author introduces the idea of a grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding, and this is stipulated to be 0.70 micron. I wonder where all the particles come from that lie between the resolving power of the microscope and 0.7 micron, which are seen under a microscope in examining a sample of grind? There is also introduced the idea of excess fines; this is all right in itself but the author's quantitative definition seems to be virtually impossible to justify, and, moreover, is obscure. Just why E, the excess fines, should be defined as the distance between an F line and a y line is hard to follow, and just where the distance should be measured does not appear to be stated, as it should be since the F and y lines intersect and the distance between will depend upon where that distance is measured. The basis of the presentation is the relation of log weight against log size that was "discovered" by Schuhmann. While this relation is implied to fit, the only evidence that I can see is a slightly irregular line in Fig. I between 2 per cent and 18 per cent by weight and then a precipitous drop at 18 per cent away from any sort of straight line. Some of the conclusions are rather startling, It is stated that E, the excess fines, remains constant for all the comminution products of any particular material, except that it may decrease for some coarse crusher products. No reason is given for this assertion. One would, on the contrary, expect that excess fines, if such a concept is permissible, would generally vary with different conditions instead of being constant. Again, "as much net energy is required to reduce a ton of quartz to particles of the grind-limit diameter (namely, of course, 0.7 micron) by grinding as is required to melt the quartz." This would require many data to prove, but no proof is given; any consideration would reveal the impossibility of such a result. Still further, ore samples "ground to widely different sizes, and with different circulating loads and different size distributions or product, show the same production of new surface area per revolution of the mill, when this grind limit is used." This statement is confuted by ordinary experience, which teaches that grinding efficiency varies generally with the condition of material. For example, the cushioning effect of fines is widely accepted, while the inefficiency of a ball mill when the feed is too coarse is also well known. R. SCHUHMANN, JR.,* Cambridge, Mass.-Contrary to Mr. Bond's stand, there is a great deal of miscellaneous experimental evidence that comminution does not stop at around 0.7 micron, nor does it cease consuming energy at that point. Comminution is in fact recognized as an important method of producing colloids.5 Mechanical comminution methods were used by von Weimarn6 to produce colloidal dispersions of a variety of solids, including the minerals chalcocite, galena, hematite, stibnite. Utzino7 gives average particle sizes ranging from 0.02 to 0.09 micron for colloids produced by mechanical comminution of several crystal-line solids. Andreasen and Berg8 have ground

S. J. Rothman and L. T. Lloyd (Argonne National Laboratory)— Hagel's paperz0 discusses the question of the mechanism for self-diffusion in bcc transition metals. Recent work21"23 has led us to agree with him in reabandoning the ring mechanism in favor of a defect mechanism, most likely vacancies. On the other hand, we think that Hagel's attempt to group together all self-diffusion in bcc transition metals is wrong. We prefer the scheme of Peart, Graham, and omlin," who separate them into two groups. One group contains the anomalously behaved metals P titanium,', y uranium, and perhaps zirconim.' The other group contains a iron," this alloy was held at 1800°C for 2 hr before quenching, its structure was all a. B. C. Giessen, I. Rump, and N. J. Grant (Authors' reply)—We very much appreciate the discussion by Deardorff and Kato regarding the a to /3 transformation temperature of hafnium. In the W-Hf program, as well as in a current study of the system Cr-Hf, standard precautions were exercised against contamination, including vacua of less than 10"5 mm Hg and a weight control check of all specimens to insure an impurity rise of less than 100 ppm. Following receipt of the above discussion, a revision was made in the annealing process. Arc-cast specimens were etched with a 10 pct HF-90 pct HNO solution until 1 mm of surface, including a possible oxide film, was removed. Annealing was done in a hafnium container which provided a long diffusion path for gaseous contaminants. Finally, the heat treating time was shortened. Structural changes were noted to occur quite slowly. A 99.5 at. pct Hf alloy showed 70 pct /3 after 30 min at 1700°C and was 100 pct /3 after 10 min at 1715°C. After 24 hr at 1740C, the alloy was found to be 10 pct/3. This change is due to contamination; it was estimated that it corresponds to an increase of 60°C in the transformation temperature over a 24 hr period. The corresponding change in 30 rnin would be slight. Using the same hafnium as in the above publication, and three new alloys at 98, 99, and 99.5 at. pct Hf, the transformation temperature was indicated to be 1715" 15°C. Since this hafnium contained 4.4 at. pct Zr, a correction of 40 5C, based on an assumed approximately linear transformation temperature curve, must be made for pure hafnium. This yields a value of 1755 20°C in good agreement with Deardorff and Kato's value. Because the slope of the boundary is small, this permits a good extrapolation, and we regard the W-Hf alloys as well suited to check the Hf transformation temperature. niobirn,'' and molybdenum,22 whose activation energies correlate with the melting temperature and whose Do values follow Zener's predictions.28 We have no quarrel with Hagel's placing chromium into the second group; we disagree with his interpreting our data to make uranium fit into that group. Hagel considers that the measurements of self-diffusion in uranium below about 950°C represent combined volume and grain boundary diffusion. This contention is based on the curvature of the penetration plot for our 891°C run,4 which also has a nearly straight line plot of log c vs x. Hagel has extrapolated these characteristics to our 803.5C run and fitted his Arrhenius plot for self-diffusion in y uranium to our four highest temperature points only. We think this is wrong for the following reasons.

Commercially pure molybdenum specimens were irradiated in the Materials Testing Reactor for an estimated exposure of 1.9 to 5.9x10 20 thermal nvt. Prior to irradiation, the material was ductile in the tension test; whereas after irradiation, it was brittle. The results of tension tests conducted at various temperatures revealed that the transition temperature for this material had been increased from —30' to +70°C as a result of the radiation exposure. From metallographic studies, it is concluded that the embrittlement is due to submicroscopic changes which raise the flow stress-temperature curve of the material. PRIOR to ten years ago, the bombardment of metals with high speed heavy particles such as protons, deuterons, a particles, and neutrons was primarily of academic interest. These particles existed in extremely small numbers in a few laboratories and only under very special conditions. With the introduction of the nuclear power reactors, these particles are now available in enormous quantities and it has become important from a practical standpoint to learn how well metals withstand severe reactor radiations. The principal radiations of concern in reactors are neutrons and y rays, since the heavier charged particles exist only in limited regions of reactors. Seitz,' in a theoretical approach, has shown that all of these high energy particles, except y rays, have enough energy to knock atoms from lattice sites and that these knocked-on atoms have enough energy to cause additional displacements of neighboring atoms. The result of this process would be a lattice containing many imperfections in the form of interstitial atoms and vacancies. Hence, it would be expected that the properties of metals can be changed by reactor radiations, and such has been found to be the case. Only a limited amount of data have been published in the open literature,2,3 and these data have been for relatively low integrated-neutron-flux exposures. In general, one effect of reactor radiations on the mechanical properties of metals has been to increase strength and decrease ductility. It is now possible to irradiate specimens in the Materials Testing reactor at much higher fluxes and to higher integrated exposures than previously possible.' The data which are being presented here describe the effects of a relatively high exposure on some mechanical properties of molybdenum. Experimental Procedures Material: The molybdenum used in this investigation was obtained from the Climax Molybdenum Co. The two heats from which the material originated were melted under a vacuum of 5 to 30 microns and cast in 7 in. diam water-cooled copper molds. One ingot contained 0.061 pct C and the other 0.066 pct. Both ingots were hot worked by extrusion and rolling into % in. diam rods, after which they were annealed and straightened. The rods were subsequently heated to 1100°C in a hydrogen atmosphere and swaged to ½ in. diam rods at the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Co. The resulting material had an average hardness of 264 VPN, or 99.2 Rb, and had an average of 5000 grains per sq ml in the transverse section, Test Specimens: Substandard-size tensile specimens were prepared according to the specifications shown in Fig. 1. These specimens were used also for hardness measurements. The metallographic specimens were small disks which were polished, etched, and photographed at X1000 prior to irradiation. NITROGEN is becoming recognized as one of the important elements in ferrous physical metallurgy. Several investigations indicate that nitrogen plays a significant part in such phenomena as strain aging and temper brittleness. Nitrogen is known to be a powerful austenite stabilizer and may be a useful alloying element in stainless steels. The hard-enability of steels has been found to be increased by nitrogen. The nitriding and carbonitriding pro- cesses are examples of successful industrial application of nitrogen in ferrous materials. For a complete understanding of the various roles played by nitrogen in ferrous metallurgy a knowledge of the phase relations in the binary iron-nitrogen system is essential. The literature contains a variety of iron-nitrogen phase diagrams. Those suggested by Fry, Sawyer,² Epstein and his coworkers,³,4 Lehrer,5 Eisenhut and Kaupp, and Hägg7,8 differ significantly from one another. Moreover, the most recent of these investigations dates back about twenty years. A re-determination of the entire diagram, therefore, appeared desirable. In addition to the published phase diagrams, investigations have been carried out on portions of the iron-nitrogen system. Bramley and Haywood determined the composition and temperature of the iron-iron nitride eutectoid. The maximum solubility of nitrogen in a iron was investigated by Portevin and Seferian10 and by Diikstra. 11 Several investigators have determined the crystal structure of the various iron-nitrogen phases. In fact, Eisenhut and Kaupp6 and Hägg7 based their entire phase diagrams on the results of such studies. Epstein' and Emmett12 reported lattice-parameter measurements on the E (hexagonal close-packed) phase. Osawa and Iwaisumi13 also studied the change in lattice parameters of the a, ? and E phases with nitrogen content. Brill" and Hägg7 showed that the y' phase has an ordered structure, and Hendricks and Kostingsl5 suggested a structural relation between the E and phases. In a recent investigation Jackl6 arefully studied the super-lattice reflections from the y' and phases. Experimental Procedure A large variety of experimental methods has been used by previous investigators in studying the iron-nitrogen system. These methods include thermal analysis, microscopic examination, X ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, dilatometric analysis and anelastic experiments. Thermal analysis is of low accuracy in determining changes in the solid state. This accuracy is further decreased for iron-nitrogen alloys since composition changes will occur during heating or cooling unless extreme care is taken to use a proper atmosphere. Metallographic methods are of small value . because homogeneous iron-nitrogen alloys of sufficient size can be produced only with great difficulty. The dilatometric method is open to the same objections as thermal analysis in that changes in composition may occur during heating and cooling. Lattice parameter measurements by X ray diffraction can be used satisfactorily for determining phase boundaries if cooling is fast enough to prevent structural changes. In view of the limitations of the various other techniques two methods only were adopted in this investigation, (1) X ray diffraction measurements, and (2) a controlled nitrogenizing method. The second method is an innovation for investigating the iron-nitrogen system, and will be described at length. Cast ingots of 99.99 pct purity A1 and aluminum/copper alloys containing up to 2 pct Cu have been found to contain four zones rather than the three previously accepted, i.e., chill, colummar, and equiaxed zones. The fourth zone consists of a coarse dendritic layer across the top surface of the ingot which is open to the atmosphere. It is also found that the grains in the equiaxed region have a "cornet" shape, with a head which is coarsely dendritic and a tail which grew with the same structure as the columnar grains. Experiments using mechanical barriers, and others involving the elimination of the surface dendrile layer, have indicated that nucleation of the equiaxed zone is caused by the showering of dendritic particles from this surface dendrite layer. These particles are the dendritic heads found in the comet grains. A mechanism of nucleation and growth of these comet grains is put forward. Experiments with a number of other metals and alloys suggests that these conclusions may apply generally to ingots cast without the addition of nucleating agents, and solidified under normal conditions. THE macrostructure of cast ingots may contain the following three zones: i) a peripheral zone of fine equiaxed grains, commonly called the chill zone; ii) a zone of columnar grains extending inwards from the chill zone; iii) a central zone of equiaxed grains; these are normally larger than the chill grains. All three zones are not necessarily present in any particular ingot since their existence and magnitude depend upon the casting conditions and composition of the cast material. The mode of formation of zones i and ii is fairly well understood. However, the cause of the central equiaxed zone remains a matter of conjecture. Previous theories put forward to explain the mechanism of nucleation in the equiaxed zone have been examined by Chalmers1 and Winegard.2 At the time when the present work was carried out the most re -cent hypothesis was that due to Chalmers,1 who recognized more fully than previous workers that conditions in this zone during solidification were not conducive to nucleation. In his hypothesis, he suggested that nuclei were formed near the mould wall during the very early stages of solidification, and that they can drift into the central zone by convective motion. This was supported by evidence from experiments using mechanical barriers to stop the drift of nuclei. A similar hypothesis had previously been put forward by Genders.3 More recently, Jackson et al. 4 have observed that dendrite arms in organic compounds can melt off during solidification. They have postulated that this occurs in metals and alloys, and that the dendrite arms which have been freed from the main dendrite act as nuclei for the equiaxed zone. In the present work, critical metallographic examination has shown that there is a fourth zone in the macrostructure of cast ingots which is a dendritic layer over the top surface of the ingot. It is also shown that there is a relationship between this zone and nucleation of the equiaxed zone. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The alloys examined were prepared from super -purity aluminum of 99.99 pct min purity (spectro-graphically detected impurities of Cu, Fe, Si, and Mg) and copper of 99.98 pct min purity (spectrographically detected impurities of Si, Zn, As, Fe, Pb, Bi, Ni, Sn, Mn, Ag, Cr, and Al). Three compositions of ingots were examined, containing 0.0, 0.1, and 2 pct Cu, respectively. The alloys were melted in an alumina-lined salamander crucible using a medium-frequency electric induction furnace; when the appropriate casting temperature was reached, the alloys were cast without degassing or fluxing treatment. The mould used was made of electrode graphite and had the following dimensions: external diameter 6 in., height 9 in., with a mould cavity 8 in. deep and a diameter tapering from 5 in. at the top to 4 in. at the bottom. Casting temperatures used were generally in the order of 70" to 90°C above the liquidus and the mould was at room temperature before casting. Inserts kere placed in the mould cavity in some experiments. These consisted of either an 18-g stainless-steel tube of 2 in. diam held axially in the mould i in. off the bottom and extending 1 in. out of the top of the mould or a "trap-door" barrier of stainless-steel gauze of 24-mesh held horizontally in the mould 31/2 in. down from the top. The construction of this insert is shown in Fig. 1. All inserts were preheated prior to casting to prevent chilling. RESULTS The macrostructures of ingots of the three compositions are described, in terms of the three generally recognized zones, in Table I, and illustrated in Figs. 2(a) to (c). The most interesting observation in this table is that relating to the shape of the equiaxed grains, which were not in fact equiaxed but of almost tear-drop shape. Closer examination of these grains showed that each consisted of a head which had a coarse dendritic structure and a tail which always grew in the opposite direction to heat flow, and which had the same structure as that of the columnar material of the ingot concerned; i.e., in the pure aluminum and 0.1 pct Cu alloy it was cellular and in the 2 pct Cu alloy it was cellular-dendritic. Identification of original cast grains was greatly hampered in the super-purity aluminum ingots, and to a lesser degree in the 0.1 pct Cu alloy,

THE life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere.1-4 The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow,6 ho indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad: who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated. Observations described in this paper were made on the shell of the clinkering zone between the first and second tires of two of the kilns at the Geelong works of Australian Portland Cement Pty. Ltd. The kilns were both 400 ft long and 10 ft diam with a welded enlarged burning zone 11 ft 6 in. diam. The shell was fabricated from mild steel and in this section its thickness was 1 in. It was lined with 41/2 in. of chemically bonded magnesite-chrome bricks which were jointed with mild steel plates. The kilns operate on a 4 pct slope and the speed may be varied between 0.75 and 1.68 rpm. The wet process is used; kilns are coal fired and are fitted with integral coolers. Temperatures within the kiln are difficult to determine with any accuracy because of the absence of black body conditions, but surface temperatures are probably in the range 1420° to 1470°C. Average shell .temperatures at the two positions at which the deformation studies were made were 370°C and 355"C respectively. Methods: In determining the ellipticity it was necessary to measure the lengths of the vertical and horizontal diameters while the kiln was in operation; data obtained from a stationary kiln would not have the same practical significance. For this purpose the four points V, W, X, and Y at the ends of two mutually perpendicular diameters were marked on one kiln. The point X is shown in Fig. 1. For the measurement of the length of the vertical diameter a vertical column, to which a horizontally aligned telescope was attached, was placed 10 ft from the kiln. This work was part of a general investigation of the territory contiguous to the route of the Government- owned Alaska Railroad. It was conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey to determine the real and potential merits of the mineral deposits, to stimulate development of them, and thus to increase the traffic on the Alaska Railroad.

INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with problems associated with air and water contamination by coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration should be given to specific areas before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants, and advance consideration should be given to all problems concerned with contaminants.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory executed 19 intermediate scale cratering experiments in oil shale at the Colony Mine in Garfield County, Colorado. These experiments have led to a better under- standing of fracture characteristics and fragmentation of & - oil shale by use of a conventional high explosive. Geologic site characterization included detailed mapping, coring, and sample analyses. Site-specific geology was observed to be a major influence on the resulting crater geometry. The joint patterns at the experimental site frequently defined the final crater symmetry. Secondary influences included vugs, lithology changes, and grade fluctuations in the local stratigraphy. Most experiments, in both the rib and floor, were conducted to obtain data to investigate the fragmentation results within the craters. The rubble was screened for fragment- size distributions. Geologic features in proximity to the explosive charge had minimal effect on the rubble due to the overpowering effect of the detonation. However, these same features became more influential on the fracture and rubble characteristics with greater distances from the shothole. Postshot cores revealed a direct relationship between the grade of the oil shale and its susceptibility to fracturing. The Colony Mine experiments have demonstrated the significant role of geology in high explosive/oil shale interaction. It is probable that this role will have to be considered for larger applications to blast patterns and potential problems in retort stability in the future of oil shale development.

THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. IN VIEW of the wide publicity given to the charges by the Couzens Committee of the United States Senate of discrimination by the Bureau of Internal Revenue in favor of the copper companies, it becomes a matter of interest to consider the basis for these charges. The point to be determined is whether they rest on a foundation of fact or are purely and simply matters of opinion. The whole question boils down to the purpose of the Tax Law as applied to mines, which is to afford the same protection to them as provided for all other taxpayers, namely: that they were to be allowed to pay back as depletion to their owners the values of their properties as they existed or were estimated to exist on May 1, 1913, free from tax. To determine these valuations it was? necessary to select from a wide range of possibilities a set of values for a number of essential factors.

CANADIAN gold production is forging ahead annually and the prospects are that it will continue to do so for many years. Table 1 shows recent annual increases. Production for 1933 will probably reach $70,000,000, and further increases are likely in 1934 and 1935. (Data for November and December, 1932, are estimated throughout this article.) The depression sent many prospectors to the woods so during the last two years many new gold areas have been discovered and are attracting real capital for exploration and development. Several mills came into production in 1932 and mills now under construction will start production in 1933. The offices of mining lawyers are busy. Capital for this new work is obtained from well financed mining companies, syndicates, and individuals who were fortunate enough to invest in the dividend-paying gold mines of the north country in the early days. Prospectors and capital are cooperating. An interest is always retained by the prospector or vender and usually a small amount of real money is given the prospector.

RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., have been discussed by the writer in several recent papers. 1.2.3.1 In those papers references were also given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 Efforts by the writer to obtain a better understanding of some of the factors involved in corrosion-fatigue finally developed into a general investigation of the effect of time and cyclic stress on corrosion of metals. Corrosion fatigue of Metals As described in the papers mentioned, rotating-cantilever specimens, conically tapered so that the stress is nearly uniform over a length of about 1.5 in., were subjected to simultaneous fatigue and corrosion. For this purpose a stream of water was diagonally applied so as to sweep the specimen from the outer to the inner fillet and surround the stressed surface with water. The fresh water is a calcium carbonate water, the composition of which has been given in a previous paper .2 The salt water is Severn River water having a saline content about one-third that of sea water. The previous papers described results obtained with ferrous and nonferrous metals. 1. INTRODUCTION 1. Location, Topography, and Climate The Burro Mountains are located in the southwestern part of New Mexico, in Grant County. The group is made up of two distinct moun-tain masses, known as the Little Burros and the Big Burros, the former lying about 6 miles southwest of Silver City-, and the latter about 9 miles farther in the same direction. They are separated by the valley of the Mangas River, a tributary of the Gila, and a stream only in name, except after a heavy down-pour of rain. . The Little Burros attain an elevation of 6,625 ft. above sea level, and the Big Burros 8,054 ft., with the surrounding country averaging about 6,000 ft. To the south of these mountains stretches the desert plain, while to the north are the more frequent elevations of the mountainous country.

THE resultant embrittlement caused by the exposure of oxygen-bearing copper when hot and exposed to reducing gases has been the subject of many studies.1 Little attention, however, has been given to the possible embrittling effects due to atmospheres or conditions that under some circumstances might be the source of a reducing gas. At rather infrequent intervals there occur reports of copper becoming embrittled during normal annealing cycles in commercial steam-atmos-hered furnaces such as customarily are used for this operation. As might be expected, several other factors exist-such as oil, dirt on the wire, or in the furnace, or metallic surface contacts that might produce reducing gases and be the source of the trouble. However, in consider-ation of the statement made by Ruder,2 it would seem that under some conditions steam itself might prove to be the source of trouble. A consideration of the amount of the dissociation of water vapor up to temperatures of the melting point of copper shows that' the amount of hydrogen that could come from this source is far too minute to account for any embrittlement. What such information does not tell is what will happen at the surface of copper when subjected to steam at elevated temperatures, for entirely different conditions may persist, which would account for Ruder's observation. Furthermore, there are no data as to what might happen at the surfaces of other materials present, the result-ant of which might affect the condition of the copper present. For this reason, it was decided to make a series of experiments com-parable to those previously conducted by the writer,1 which would clarify the effect of the steam on copper, and in copper in the presence of steel.

SOME problems concomitant with commercial exploitation of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service depart-ment wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence. The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character.

IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.
