The presence or absence of plastic strain at a cleavarage surface is a question of much importance, and upon its answer depends future possible theoretical work. To investigate this question back-reflectinn X ray patterns were obained on the cleavage facets of ferrite grains. Liberation (the process of destroying the interlock between unwanted materials, such as mineral matter and pyrite, and coal) is one of the most important precursors to the benefication of raw coal in order to produce high grade marketable coals at economical recovery levels. Liberation is achieved usually by comminuting the raw coal. However, because of the significant interaction between the production of fine particles to achieve liberation and the cost of separating fine particles, the coal industry needs a method projecting the change in washability with size reduction. Such a projection can be combined with size reduction and separation simulators in order to examine completely beneficiation circuitry to produce coals of stringent specification. This paper presents the development of an appropriate liberation model for coal and its solution by Monte Carlo simulation to predict the expected washability of the raw coal as a function of comminution. It includes model validation with a known binary mixture as well as with a known teritary mixture.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. IT would doubtless have been felt by many but a few years back that there was little left to be said on the subject of crucible tool-steel, and that something akin to finality had been arrived at in its manufacture and general treatment. Probably such feeling was justifiable when it is remembered that the making of steel in crucibles is by far the oldest method known, dating back from time immemorial, it being indeed impossible to accurately trace its origin and earliest development; but it seems certain that carbon-steel was made and used thousands of years ago for cutting-tools. Proof of this may be seen by the marvelous carvings and workings on the intensely hard stone-work of the ancients, for it would be difficult to conceive by what means, other than with steel tools, such work could have been executed; and it is wonderful to contemplate that steel cutting-tools should have been used so long ago, whilst the principle of manufacturing them-that is, by fusion of iron and charcoal in crucibles-was then in a measure on the sane lines as we work on at the present day. Archaeologists have discovered that the Chinese made steel in crucibles long before the Christian era. " Wootz " steel fabricated in India centuries ago was crucible steel, as was also the celebrated Damascus steel, produced at the forges of Toledo, and, curiously, this latter steel furnishes' yet another proof that "There is nothing new under the Sun," for it is recorded that Damascus steel contained certain percentages of tungsten, nickel, manganese, etc., some of the very elements, in fact, contained in the present modern high-speed steel, so that a latent high-speed steel may be said to have existed

Nickel-bearing saprolite developed during the early Tertiary over a northeast trending ultramafic body of Jurassic age near Riddle in southwestern Oregon. The principal nickel mineral is garnierite, but other complex nickel minerals may be present. There are two main ore bodies, an upper (older) one associated with the Klamath peneplain, and a lower (younger) one on the Sherwood peneplain. Saprolite constitutes the bulk of the ore and was probably derived from peridotite and dunite through chemical decomposition by downward percolating meteoric groundwater. Decomposition took place by net loss of MgO, SiO2, and Fe without a change in volume. Faults and joints provided permeable zones which localized saprolite development, and faulting may have helped preserve some ore from loss by erosion. Garnierite-chalcedony boxwork ore was deposited by meteoric groundwater along faults, joints, and at the level of former water tables. Boxwork ore is entirely supergene, the chemical constituents having been derived from higher in the soil profile. The saprolites show evidence of both supergene and residual enrichment in nickel. Red and yellow soil occurs as a capping over saprolite and boxwork, and was derived from them by chemical and mechanical decomposition. The present deposits are probably truncated remnants of a formerly thicker and much more extensive deposit which probably included laterite at the surface. The deposits started to form in the early Tertiary due to deep chemical weathering under sub-tropical to warmtemperature conditions. Early Tertiary ero~ion surfaces of low relief probably contributed to the predominance of chemical weathering over mechanical erosion. Alteration under present climatic conditions favors the formation of soil from saprolite rather than the formation of new saprolite from peridotite.

THE Krupp-Renn Process,[1] has been successfully used to treat low-grade iron ores, laterites, titaniferous sands, and other minerals, and before World War I1 25 units were built by the Krupp-Grusonwerk, Magdeburg, Germany. J. J. Howard[2] has shown theoretical advantages of the pyro-metallurgical treatment over conventional approaches; and the process was described by R. Durrer[3].

INTRODUCTION A prerequisite to the evaluation and management of oil properties is accurate information derived from the analysis of core samples; but reliable data, such as porosity and permeability, can result only if all oil and water have been removed from the core samples analyzed. The most common method of core cleaning used to date has been Soxhlet extraction—a somewhat static technique, which depends upon the slow diffusion of hot solvent through the core sample. Soxhlet extraction performs satisfactorily only with highly permeable samples and at best requires long cleaning periods. The centrifuge method was developed in 1951 by Continental Oil Co. to overcome the inefficiencies inherent in the Soxhlet method. The new method is basically an operation in which hot solvents are caused to flow through the samples under the influence of centrifugal force. The centrifuge unit has proved so successful that samples which formerly required days for partial extraction can now be completely cleaned in approximately one hour. The original idea was conceived in 1950 by Elmer S. Messer, whose early experiments consisted of flowing solvent over sandstone samples suspended in a revolving basket and driven by a vertically mounted vacuum cleaner motor. Results were so outstanding that more permanent units were constructed. A modified model using this basic design was recently built by Core Laboratories, Inc., and is now used regularly in their operations. DESIGN Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the two extractors routinely used to clean small core plugs in the Production Research Div. of Continental Oil Co.'s Ponca City laboratories. For illustrative purposes, the basket from one of the units has been removed, and because both extrac- tors are of identical design only one is described in the following discussion. Each extractor unit consists of a centrifuge and a solvent still. The core basket of the centrifuge is made of mild cold rolled steel 7 1/2 in. in diameter and 1 1/8 in. deep. The basket holds 18 1-in. samples (cubical or cylindrical) and is attached directly to a cone fitted to the shaft of the motor. Both the outer rim and the hollow hub of the basket contain perforations for the passage of solvent and extract. The solvent is delivered to the perforations by means of a copper tube inserted into the hollow hub. The motor is a vertical tool post grinder motor; (115 v, 5.6 amp, 0-60 cycles, AC-DC, rated at 1/3 hp). It has a rated speed of 10,000 rpm under full load and 15,000 rpm with no load. Variation of speed is obtained by the use of a variable transformer. The solvent still was constructed from one end of a stainless steel oxygen bottle by inserting a heating element, sight glass, and piping as shown on the schematic diagram, Fig. 2. The heater used was a three-position, 1,000 w, 115-v, immersion type. Intermittent flow of solvent to the centrifuge is obtained by means of a siphon bottle inserted between the condenser and the centrifuge.

The Northeast Tripp Slide is one of the larger slope failures that can be attributed to open pit mining. It is a 11.7 million cubic meter (15.3 x l0 6 yd3) wedge failure created by two thick gouge-filled fault zones whose intersection plunges into the Tripp pit at 13°. One unique aspect of this failure is that the slide is now stable despite having moved an estimated 8.5m (28 ft.) towards the pit and having reached a maximum overall velocity of 2lmmlday (0.07 ft/day). The slide started to fail in 1968, accelerated until mining in the slide's toe area was halted in April 1970, then began to decelerate. With the cessation of mining in the toe area, rubblized rock sloughed into the pit bottom which added weight to the failures toe constraints and began the stabilization process. Measurements from a network of survey stations revealed a correlation between the slide's velocity and heavy precipitation. Runoff water accumulating in the tension cracks is believed responsible for this correlation. Moreover, the survey net measurements showed that during the failure's last stage the vertical component of the slide's movement greatly increased. It is proposed that this settling was caused by plastic-like flowage of the clay gouge underlying the failure The fault zone's effective shear strength was estimated by a back- analysis on the wedge's geometry and by performing direct shear tests. The tests, performed on cores taken from samples that were collected on the failure, yielded a residual shear strength of: cohesion 0.61 kg/cm2 (8.7 lb/in2), and a friction angle of 9.6°. This residual shear strength was near1y equal to the back-calculated strength indicating that the controlling fault's effective strength was essentially the same as the residual shear strength of the gouge filling

At 1090°C the scale formed OH Mn is highly, irregular due to blistering and sintering, This is a second cause of faster oxidation Since much of the blistered oxide does not participate as part of the protective layer. The oxide phases that form at different times depend on the degree to which the surface metal has become depleted, in manganese by preferential oxidation. PREVIOUS work has demonstrated that the oxide scales formed on chromium steels at high temperature consist of both spinel and rhombohedra1 phases and may contain considerably more manganese, especially in the spinel phase, than is present initially in the alloy.' It has further been observed that a binary Fe-26 Cr alloy scaled less rapidly than an equivalent commercial steel and formed no spinel.' However, it is not established if manganese in chromium alloys actually promotes formation of spinel nor if it affects oxidation resistance. It seemed expedient to try to evaluate the specific effect of manganese by oxidizing an Fe-26 Cr alloy containing a small manganese addition under the same experimental conditions as used for the manganese-free alloy.' EXPERIMENTAL Table I shows the composition in weight percent of the Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn alloy and of the Fe-26 Cr alloy used as reference. The alloy with manganese was prepared from the vacuum-melted Fe-26 Cr alloy by remelting in vacuum with the proper manganese addition. The ingot was rolled to strip and specimens 1.1 by 0.035 by 5 cm and 1.1 by 0.5 by 4 cm cut out or machined. As previously described2 the specimens were smoothed by abrading through 600-grit Sic paper, electropolished in acetic-perchloric acid (20 to 1) to remove 10 p of metal, annealed at 1100°C in 20 torr of purified argon, and electropolished to remove a further 10 p of metal. They were then either rinsed in water and methanol and blotted dry or immediately etched for 45 sec in deoxy-genated 4 N HC1 under cathodic polarization at 10 pa per sq cm. Oxidation runs were carried out in a vertical tube furnace in a flow of purified oxygen at 1 atm while the weight increase was recorded continuously on a* automatic balance.3 Alter 98 hr at 870.C or 20 hr at 1090"C the specimens were removed to flowing argon and observed microscopically for evidence of spalling as they cooled. Subsequently they were examined by X-ray diffraction, the oxides analyzed chemically, and metallographic cross settions prepared. RESULTS Figs. 1 and 2 show the oxidation curves of Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn at 870' and 1090C. The Fe-26 Cr reference runs are shown as dashed curves. Experimental details of the six runs are included in Table 11. The first 20 hr of run 1 is repeated in Fig. 2 to show the effect of temperature. At 8'70°C the weight gain for Fe-Cr-Mn is about twice that of Fe-Cr (curve 1 vs curve 2, Fig. 1). Both alloys show regular oxidation curves. On parabolic coordinates (right-hand scale of Fig. 1) the

INDUSTRY has yet to find a universal solution to the problem of engineer personnel selection. Today, the choice of the right man for the right job is even more pressing than ever before. The age of the hard apprenticeship seems to have passed. In its place one finds the interviewer who must determine through personal contact and evaluation of college grades whether a graduate engineer will fit into his company's scheme. The problem, as it is constituted today, may be broken into four parts: Need for better use of human resources (there is a shortage of engineers, scientists, and skilled workers), productivity with higher efficiency, encouragement of personal pride in work performed, and employee's happiness on the job and away from it.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) PREFATORY NOTE.-The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago ; and. I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before offering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it in some respects clearer and more complete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.-A. EILERS. I. PARTIAL REFINING IN THE ANODE-FURNACE. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 20 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furnace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace-afterwards casting to anodes and refining electrolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. CONCESSION from the Chilean government granting the company use of the Rio Salado water stipulates that a minimum of 35,000 metric tons of such salty water must be diverted from the Salado daily, and be disposed of in a manner not to contaminate the Rio Loa to the east of its confluence with the Rio San Salvador at Chacance, Fig. 1. Consequently, the selection of a suitable site for the sulphide plant tailing disposal had the additional problem of the disposal of excess brackish waters. Studies of the terrain in the area directly to the south of the plant indicated that construction of tailing ponds would be costly, and generally unsatisfactory due to excessive slope of the ground, lack of flanking hills, danger of raising the groundwater level thus causing springs along the Antofagasta-Bolivia railroad; and the possibility of creating a dust nuisance at the plant site or at Calama due to blowing sands. Further to the southwest the San Salvador river canyon offered some possibilities and surveys were made at sites A to D, inclusive, Fig. 1. Here again costly dams would have been necessary to impound the tremendous quantity of tailing produced by the new plant, and provision would have to be made to handle a considerable flow of water through the disposal area to the west of the Rio Opache. Additional surveys were made in the area to the southeast of the plant which brought to light the existence of a natural basin of about 14 1/2 square miles, flanked by low-lying hills, and requiring only the most rudimentary dams to close the outlets at the western end. It has been estimated that the Salar de Talabre, as this basin is called, has the ultimate storage capacity of 1 billion tons of tailing with dam heights of only 60 ft. Pipe Line Layout After the decision had been reached to use the Salar de Talabre for the main disposal area various methods were considered for transporting the tailing from the 300 ft diam thickeners to the disposal site, 17.7 miles away. The first plan was to construct a. concrete launder on a 11 pct grade but a survey of this grade line indicated it would not lead directly into the Salar but would terminate somewhat to the north, and from that point on the slope would be considerably less than 1 pct along a natural watercourse. A slope of 2 pct or even 2 ¼ pct in such a rough watercourse or ditch is the ideal, judging from the success of operations at Cananea. Since a simple ditch is the most economical vehicle for the transportation of tailing, it was decided to use one with a 2 ¼ pct grade for as much of the distance as was possible with the existing terrain and to construct a concrete headbox, or forebay, at the terminus of the ditch to supply a steel pipe line leading the rest of the way into the Salar. Referring to the maps of the Chuquicamata area outlining the tailing disposal system, Figs. 1 and 2, one can trace the flow of the tailing from the thickeners to the Salar as follows: The 8-in. spigot pipes from the thickeners (1) discharge into a concrete sump feeding a concrete launder with a 2 pct slope. The launder carries the tailing into a concrete junction box (2) located south of the sulphide plant. The purpose of the junction box is to provide emergency facilities for diverting the tailing flow from the main disposal area to the emergency area. It also provides a junction point for the launder from the sulphide plant's future east extension. The box is fitted with a pair of radial gates controlling flow into the main tailing ditch (6) or the emergency ditch (3) which terminates on the pampa. All ditches are of the same cross section, namely 4 ft wide at the bottom with 1 : 1 side slopes and with a minimum depth of 21/2 ft. Where the nature of the ground demands it, the ditches are lined with stone rubble. The overflow from the plant's 10 million gal reservoir (4) is led into the main tailing ditch by way of a spillway ditch (5). The main ditch terminates in a trashscreen fitted, concrete forebay (7) which serves as a headbox for a 24 in. O.D. x 3/8 in. wall, Dresser coupled, steel pipe (10) and a 12 in. x 8-gage spiral welded, wedge-lock coupled, steel pipe (8). The forebay is fitted with two compartments, one for each pipe, and flow into each is controlled by radial gates. Each compartment is fitted with a 6-in. drain pipe controlled by a rubber pinch valve. Discussion of the paper of WALTER 0. SNELLING, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704. A. C. McLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out iii the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750°F. and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, San Francisco, Cal.-What metal did you use, Mr. McLaughlin? - A. C. McLAUGHLIN.-Ordinary seamless tubing, extra strong. WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS.-Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Rittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150°C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? WILLIAM A. WILLIAMs.-The fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.
