The Anglovaal Group has released details concerning its new processes for recovering platinum group metals, stating that the Group's system, which involves batch processing and precipitation methods for these metals (PGM's), leads to faster recovery times, increased recoveries, and higher purities than the conventional process. Insofar as South Africa's Merensky Reef is concerned, the Anglovaal method of recovering palladium first (as opposed to platinum in the conventional process) enables it to use a much simpler process in the subsequent recovery of platinum and other metals. Because the processes give cleaner separations, the volume of material to be recirculated -and therefore the total volume of material in the recovery circuits- is reduced substantially.

Blasting to prepare orebodies for in situ leaching usually involves extraordinary conditions which sometimes require special and innovative techniques. To date several unusually large blasts have been made for leaching with results that are very encouraging. Among the factors considered when designing these large blasts are orebody shape and depth, rock properties, vibration and damage potential, loading logistics, and safety. All of these factors, and others, are discussed with an effort made to put each of them into its proper perspective.

Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in

The paper is in two parts. The first develops the formulae and method needed to calculate the size, nu)nber, spacing, and volume fraction of hard or inert particles in the interior of a specimen from measurernents made on an extraction replica; throughout, the spread of- particle sizes in a single specimen is taken into account, and the extraction efficiency of the replica is considered. A method for testing whether the particles are randotnly distributed in space is described, and the spacing of randomly distributed particles is discussed. The second Part describes the application of the method to copper containing spherical particles of silica; the description includes an estimate of the errors involved, and a comparison of this with alternative methods. All parameters except uolume fraction can be determined satisfactorily, and the method offers advantages over other electron-,rzicroscopic techniques when dealing with hard particles in a softer matrix, or inert particles in a chem-ically less inert matrix. 1 HE experimental measurement of sizes and numbers of discrete particles of a second phase embedded in a matrix material from opaque, plane sections has been considered by many authors, notably by Fullman.' It is assumed that, when the specimen is sectioned, the particles are also sectioned, so that the diameters of the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of the cross section ("surface diameters") are measured. It is difficult to derive the distribution of true particle diameters ("volume diameters") from measurements of the distribution of "surface diameters" on a plane section. The measurement of size and numbers of small second-phase particles by transmission electron microscopy through thin foils of matrix containing the particles has been described by Cahn and ~uttin~' and by ~illiard.~ Because of overlap and the fact that particles which intersect the foil surface may be sectioned whereas those in the bulk of the foil are not, it is again difficult to measure the true distribution of particle sizes. The use of replicas for this sort of measurement has not been analyzed in detail. A replica made from an opaque cross section, thus replicating the circles of intersection of particles with the plane of section, is analyzed by Fullman's method and suffers from the same difficulties. Under certain circumstances, however, extraction replicas can be used, and offer a special advantage in that they make the determination of the true distribution of particle diameters particularly simple. It is the purpose of this paper to describe this extraction replica method. Consider the example of an alloy consisting of SiOz particles, whose mean diameter is about 1000A, dispersed in a copper matrix. When the alloy is sectioned and mechanically polished, the particles are not sectioned, because they are much harder than the matrix, and so will be either left in the surface or pulled out whole, and because the particle size is smaller than the abrasive size of even the finest abrasive. The particles are chemically inert in solutions which chemically etch or electropolish the matrix, so that chemical treatments do not section the particles either. (Experimental measurements of particle shape in this alloy confirm this—truncated particles are never seen.) Small, hard or inert, particles are therefore not sectioned when the specimen is sectioned and polished. An extraction replica taken from this polished surface shows the true "volume" diameter of each extracted particle; the distribution of diameters seen on the replica is the surface distribution of true "volume" diameters, and the volume distribution of true "volume" diameters is easily derived from it. The extraction replica method is not subject to the difficulties associated with sectioning of particles, and avoids the problem of overlap from which the transmission method suffers. The method is well-suited for studying hard particles in a soft matrix. Examples are provided by internally oxidized alloys, oxide-dispersion strengthened metals like T.D. Nickel, and carbides, nitrides, and strong intermetallic compounds in metals. It should be possible to adapt polishing techniques in alloys containing softer but inert particles to avoid sectioning the particles (say by electropolishing or etching). The method is tested and illustrated in Sections 8 and 9 by applying it to a dispersion of spherical SiO2 particles in a copper matrix. The power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

Byproducts are more important to the copper mining companies than to the copper market. Copper ores frequently contain gold, silver, molybdenum, lead, zinc, and cobalt. With the increase in the prices of these metals copper mining has become more profitable. If byproduct prices remain high, additional firms will be attracted to the copper industry; the increased supply of copper will reduce the long-run copper price. However, this is unlikely to happen because the markets for the copper byproducts, especially molybdenum and cobalt, are small. Increased recovery from copper and other sources will depress the prices of these byproducts before the copper price is significantly affected. Should byproduct prices remain high, the copper market will both settle at a lower long-run price and be more unstable in the short run. Since changes in the copper price do not affect the entire earnings of a multi-metal mine, the copper price must fall further before such mines reduce output in the short run. Higher byproduct revenues will make copper supply less responsive to copper prices; shifts in copper demand will result in greater copper price fluctuations in the short run than they did before.

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.

BECAUSE of the need for ductile heat resistant alloys of non-strategic composition, there has been metallurgical development of Fe-A1 alloys possessing improved ductility and hot strength, together with high oxidation resistance. Iron and alu- minum form solid solutions up to approximately 35 pct Al. Alloys in the 8 to 12 pct A1 range are characterized by excellent oxidation resistance, high electrical resistivity' and, when appropriately alloyed, have creep rupture strength equivalent to that of the austenitic stainless steels.' At higher aluminum levels, the magnetic properties are of considerable interest. Nachman and Buehler" have recently reported on the desirable magnetic characteristics of the 16 pct alloy.

In fact, at the rate things are developing Down Under and Out Back, what with professional prospecting teams crisscrossing the continent under the direction of professional exploration management, Australia may one day find itself as the world's greatest storehouse. Whereas Necessity may be the Mother of Invention, Consumption is surely the Mother of Exploration. At least this is true in Australia of today. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.

ONE of the most common technical terms in the U. S. today is automation-a word not listed in the 1946 dictionary. The influence of automation on the national economy has been tremendous. It has even been the subject of congressional investigations. Automation, writes Aronson, substitutes mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, and electronic devices for human effort and decision? Automatic devices and instruments are used extensively in some industries, but many others have yet to take full advantage of these great discoveries. The petroleum industry has been a leader in using automatic controls-some refineries are almost completely controlled by automatic devices. The field of geophysics is entirely dependent on instruments and has progressed at almost exactly the same rate as improvements in instrumentation. In metallurgy and mineral dressing use of instrumentation is increasing very rapidly. Mining engineers throughout the country are beginning to think in terms of instruments and controls.

The Lake Superior region contains extensive deposits of potential iron ore in the form of fine-grained oxidized taconite. To help assure utilization of this resource in an environmentally sound manner, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting bench- and pilot-scale research using wet high-intensity magnetic (WHIM) separation. The advantages and disadvantages of WHIM separation in comparison with other feasible beneficiation methods are discussed. Pilot plant results are given for a flowsheet in which WHIM scavenging is used in conjunction with selective flocculation and flotation. A mathematical model for use in process optimization is given. Practical aspects of matrix selection and separator design for WHIM separation of fine particles are discussed.

Although it was known some years ago at the Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65-mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. Earliest Use of Microscopic Examination of Tailings As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for microscopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral partieles or grains may be classified into scparate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain 110 other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are representel (the core may be of chalcopyrite, partially altered to boruite, these two minerals being cntirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite. The grains of free mineral particles are perhaps the most numerous, taking the ore as a whole, but it is noticeable that of the grains of combined or associated sulfides

THE purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. LININGS FOR BOREHOLES The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used, particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

Physical properties of thin films of CdS and CdSe formed by vacuum deposition onto glass sibstrates have been studied as a function of deposition and processing conditions. The crystallinity and surface features of CdS films were examined using electron microscopy and electron and X-ray diffraction techniques. The films were poly crystalline; the preferred orientation and crystallite size increased with film thickness, substrate temperature, and deposition time. The CdS films consisted primarily of hexagonal-phase material, in contrast to similarly prepared CdSe films which have previously been observed to contain mixtures of cubic and hexagonal phases. As-deposited CdS films showed no major dependence of Hall mobility on crystallite size or degree of preferred orientation. Hall mobility and carrier concentration in CdS and CdSe .films were measured at various temperatures; both parameters increased with temperature and yielded activation energies which depended on fabrication conditions. Surface-desorption phenomena and overcoating of the semiconductor with SiO affected the observed electrical properties significantly. THIN films of cadmium sulfide1,2 and cadmium sele-nide3,4 have been employed by various workers as semiconductors in the insulated-gate thin-film field-effect transistor, known as the TFT. These devices are most commonly made by vacuum deposition of all materials onto an amorphous substrate such as glass. A knowledge of the microstructure and electrical properties of semiconductor layers used in the thin-film transistor is essential in order to form a realistic model for the device and to improve its performance, reproducibility, and reliability. This paper will describe studies of the physical properties of vacuum-deposited CdS and CdSe films prepared under various conditions. Structural characteristics examined in- cluded phases present, crystallite size, nature of preferred orientation of crystallites, surface roughness, and structural homogeneity throughout the film thickness. Electrical properties measured were Hall mobility and conductivity and their dependence on temperature and ambient. Thin-film properties are affected by many fabrication parameters including purity and physical form of evaporant, deposition rate, film thickness, design and temperature of the evaporation crucible, geometry of the deposition chamber, nature of the residual atmosphere, composition and temperature of the substrate, and details of postdeposition processing. PREPARATION OF FILMS In this work the semiconductor films were deposited in a conventional oil-diffusion-pumped system with pressures in the 10-8 torr range. The CdS evaporant was obtained from the Eagle-Picher Co. as a high-purity coarse-grained crystalline powder; the CdSe was a high-purity sintered powder supplied by the Harshaw Chemical Co. The evaporation crucible was a resistance-heated molybdenum-wire basket coated with aluminum oxide and filled with a quartz wool plug at the top. The source to substrate distance was usually 10 cm. This region was enclosed by a Pyrex inner cylinder. The substrate was heated with an overlying Pyrex plate coated with tin oxide. The substrate temperature was controlled using a thermocouple attached to the lower side of the heater. This thermocouple was calibrated against another thermocouple attached to a dummy substrate and by observation of melting points of various metal films deposited in the system. The substrates were polished borosilicate glass plates and conventional glass microscope slides. Substrate preparation included cleaning with an ultrasonically agitated detergent bath followed by isopropanol-vapor de-greasing. Film thickness was measured interferomet-rically during and after deposition. a Uranium was deformed by cold rolling, and the effects of this plustic deformation on the microstruc-ture of the metal were observed by the technique of transmission elecbon microscopy. The recrystalli-zation of selected cold-wmked samples was also studied by this method. The samples were prepared for examination by electrolytic thinning in a standard metallographic electrolyte which has not been previously reported as being used in producing thin foils of uranium. The microstructural changes observed in the a uranium were generally similar to those seen by optical microscopy. The changes in the microstructure of a uranium following cold work and recrystallization treatments have been the subjects of several studies employing optical and X-ray techniques.12-19 These studies indicated that twinning was the redominant mode of deformation at room temperature20 and that the regions of high energy associated with the deformation twins were preferred sites for the initiation of recrystallization.15,18, Recently several workers have prepared thin foils of uranium suitable for examination by transmission electron microscopy.'-lo The foils thus prepared have been used to study fission fragment damage; a particular dislocation reaction,' and gas precipitation." At this laboratory the microstructural changes occurring during the cold working and recrystallizing of a uranium samples have been studied by using transmission electron-microscopy techniques. The foils used in this work were electrolytically thinned in a polishing bath not reported previously in the literature as being used for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uranium used in this investigation was depleted a uranium sheet 4 mils thick. The results of a spectrochemical analysis of this material are shown in Table I. The as-received uranium was cut into strips, 1 in. wide by 5 in. long, and annealed in vacuo at 600°C for 2-1/2 hr. The resulting microstructure consisted of relatively uniform, equiaxed grains having diameters of 10 to 50 p. Cold Working. The cold-worked samples were prepared by rolling several of the annealed uranium strips to various thicknesses. The strips were reduced 3.5 ± 0.5, 6.0 ± 0.6, 10.0 ± 0.5, 19.5 ± 1.0, and 28.5 ± 2.0 pct in thickness. It was not possible to achieve these reductions with a single pass through the rolling mill, so the strips were turned end for end during the rolling procedure. The cold-rolled strips were stored in dry ice until samples from them could be thinned and examined (within 24 hr after rolling). Annealing. The samples used in studying the re-crystallization behavior of a uranium were obtained by annealing sections of the strips which had been reduced 10.0 and 28.5 pct. These samples were sealed in evacuated Pyrex capsules and were annealed in a tube furnace at temperatures from 200" to 600°C and for times from 1/2 to 2 hr, see Table l. Thinning: The samples from the rolling and heat treatments were prepared for examination in the electron microscope by electropolishing in a bath composed of 25 g chromic acid, 133 ml glacial acetic acid, and 25 ml water. This electrolyte has been used and recommended for preparing specimens for optical metallography It was necessary to mask the edges of the sample with a stop-off paint in order to prevent preferential attack in these areas. The paint used was made by dissolving polystyrene in benzene. The electrolytic cell consisted of a cylindrical stainless-steel cathode placed in a beaker containing the electrolyte, with the sample as the anode positioned at the cell axis. (written discussion).—It seems to me that thc young man must first be absolutely sure that the work he has taken up is to his liking and then I would advise that he get into the practical end of it and learn as much about it as he can as fast as he can. For instance, in the refinery business the college man, graduated in chemical engineering, should ground himself by going through the various departments in a refinery and working in them until he is thoroughly familiar with the operating problems. In a short time he would be able to apply many things which appear in the abstract form in his college work and this would opcn up an opportunity for him to capitalize on them, promoting his own interest. I do not criticize the present-day college men as a class, but I have found that many of them come into your plant with the idea that mere possession of a diploma should insure rapid promotion; in a short time they are impatient and usually leave. We have found in employing men that the single attribute most difficult to find in them is a lot of energy and whole-hearted interest in the work at hand, and it seems to me that if a man combines these with a careful technical training he should be fairly well equipped to gamble on his future. They must learn that the biggest satisfaction to be gained in life is in their work. Procedure for Attaining Objective of Young Petroleum Engineer H. B. Fell,+ Ardmore, Okla. (written discussion).—Of course, the first thing to be ronsidered in any proposition is the ultimate objective that is desired to be attained. 1 presume that the desired objective of most of the young men graduating in petroleum engineering will be that of chief executive of one of the companies in the petroleum industry, or one of the allied industries, or to become an independent oil producer, or oil refiner, or possibly an oil distributor. The next phase then to be considered is the procedure which should most logically be followed to attain the objeckive of the indivitlual, since in these cases these young men will have been trained in a course in petroleum engineering and it would logically be presumed that the attainment of their objective should be through the operating end of the branch of the business with which they are connected. The operating end is, of course, the department of each branch of the business that develops the resources, or refines the products, or distributes the products, from which the profits are derived, and is a part of any business which is filled with enough interesting work to appease the desires of the most ambitious young men. In order to get the best possible training it would appear to me that the place for a young man to start after graduation would be at the bottom of that branch of the industry which he expects to follow. For example, if he is going in the producing end he can gct no better training than is secured by starting as a roustabout in the ficltl, where he romes in constant rontact with the character of work that is necessary
