Gouverneur Talc Co. had sought an effective means of depicting its mine at Balmat, N. Y. since it commenced operations in 1947. After considerable research the engineering department settled on the idea of a model made of plexiglas at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft. The solid portion of this model represents the actual underground excavations. Talc is mined from two metamorphic tremolite-talc orebodies which are part of a complex fold system in this region. In the mine, stopes are laid out in panels and developed into openings 50 ft wide, 10 to 80 ft high, and perhaps 200 ft in length. Pillars usually approximate 30 ft in width. All present mining operations are contained within a block 2000 ft long, 1700 ft wide, and 1500 ft thick.

Y.)—Brown, Gaudin, and Loeb in their study of intergranular comminution by heating attempt to find one explanation for all types of rock in terms of the properties of the phases present. The only necessary condition for intergranular cracking by heating is the setting up of high stresses at the grain boundaries. Such stresses may be set up in multiphase isotropic mixtures if the thermal expansions of the phases are different, in non-cubic single phases because of the anisotropy of thermal expansion in the various crys-tallographic directions, and in materials containing quartz because of the a-p' transformation at 575°C. In addition, for intergranular comminution by heating, the cooling and not the heating is most important.

Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.

[ ] S. H. Ash (Mining Industry Continues with Lower Fatal-Injury Rates, P. 257) was born in Roslyn, Wash. and attended Lehigh University and University of Washington. He received a B.S. and E.M. degree in mining engineering. Mr. Ash was supervising engineer in charge of work of Safety Div., Bureau of Mines, eastern Pennsylvania and the states of N. Y., Del., N. J. and the New England states. He was appointed chief engineer of Metal and Nonmetal Mining Section of the Mineral Production Security Div., Bureau of Mines, July 1942. At present he is chief engineer, Safety Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Besides holding membership in AIME, he is a member of National Honorary Engineering Society, Society of American Military Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and many other societies.

Elemental titanium has become famous as a space age metal, because of its high strength/ weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. However, the major use is in the form of titanium dioxide pigment, which because of its whiteness, high refractive index, and resulting light-scattering ability, is unequaled for whitening paints, paper, rubber, plastics, and other materials. A relatively minor use is in welding rod coatings, in the form of the mineral, rutile. United States consumption of titanium dioxide for these applications in 1973 was as follows: pigments, 891,000 st; titanium metal, 40,000 st (=24,000 st metal) ; and welding rod coatings, 10,000 st. The only commercially important titanium ore minerals at the present time are ilmenite, and its alteration products, and rutile. Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1790, as a white oxide which he recovered from menaccanite, a variety of ilmenite occurring as a black sand near Falmouth, Cornwall. Barksdale (1966) states that the fundamental chemical reactions on which the present day titanium industry is based were known before 1800, although it was not until 1918 that these pigments were available commercially on the American market. Pings (1972) outlines the early history of the titanium industry in the United States, referring to the work of Guise (1964) and others: "Mining of titanium minerals in the United States began sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Small quantities of rutile were also produced during the time in North Carolina and Georgia. In 1901 rutile was mined from a deposit near Roseland, Va., and was used in making titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Ilmenite in the deposit was produced as a separate item in 1913, and rutile and ilmenite were obtained from this deposit through 1921. The mining of titanium bearing beach sands began in 1916 near Mineral City and Pablo Beach, Fla., for the purpose of making titanium tetrachloride to be used in tracer bullets, flares, and smokescreens. The titanium pigment industry was founded in 1918. By 1928 a large part of the domestic production of rutile, ilmenite, and zircon came from Florida. However production ceased in 1929 in Florida with the mining of newly discovered deposits in Virginia which were mined until 1968. The discovery of new deposits in Florida, and the development of better mining and concentrating methods for lowgrade sands, led to a return of activities in this area. The large deposits near Tahawus, N.Y., were brought into production in 1942 by National Lead Co. (now N L Industries Inc.), and by 1949 this company was the lead¬ing producer of ilmenite in the world. In 1948 the extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec." The beginning of the modern titanium metal industry was in 1948, when E. The objectives, essential features and implications of the 'random' and 'deterministic' types of ore value surfaces are examined as well as the basic requirements for a satisfactory prediction model. The 'random' method used on the South African gold mines and based on observed auto-covariance patterns is briefly discussed as well as its justification in preference to the 'deterministic' approach. Various mathematical models for auto-covariance patterns are examined for the one-dimensional case. It is also shown that these patterns as estimated for ore values in certain mines agree closely for various sizes of ore unit. In two case studies the variations in gold, uranium and ore thickness covariance patterns are examined and compared with certain geological features established independently from sedimentological studies.

THE increase in the number of coal-cleaning plants employing dense-medium processes occurring since 1946 is especially interesting when viewed historically. Both sand and magnetite were introduced as material for heavy mediums at about the same time, sand in the Chance process in 1921 and magnetite in the Conklin process in 1922, but from that point on their records diverge. The Chance process enjoyed a steady growth from its inception, whereas no additional magnetite plants were built in the United States for over 20 years. Then, following the close of the World War 11, magnetite was again introduced, this time with marked success. During the following years some 47 plants employing magnetite medium were built. This rapid growth of dense-medium cleaning has been concurrent with widespread adoption of full-seam mining on one hand and a return to a more competitive market on the other. At a time when changing mining practice has provided cleaning plants with dirtier coal and changing market conditions have simultaneously demanded a cleaner product, the industry has through necessity turned to improved preparation. The inherently greater sharpness with which dense-medium processes can separate coal from impurity is thus helping to hold the line against ever-increasing mining costs and at the same time assisting materially in retaining badly needed markets. Although dense-medium cleaning unquestionably offers a distinct advantage when the washing problem is difficult, other methods can provide almost equally high efficiency when the coal is easy to wash. Moreover, fine coal cannot yet be treated by heavy medium in a proved process, although the Driessen cyclone is in the pilot-plant stage. Most of the present types of dense-medium equipment have been in use only a few years, and the dearth of information in the literature concerning their performance characteristics is entirely understandable, Nevertheless this information is necessary if the process is to be intelligently applied to individual cleaning problems. Without data on the efficiency of a process in a particular type of separation, it is difficult to assess the advantage to be expected from it. Similarly, the role of particle size in heavy-medium separation is important in some cases, yet there is little published information on this aspect. To mention only one more of the numerous points on which essential information is lacking, the bearing of medium characteristics on performance has been discussed only in qualitative terms. It was with the hope of providing information on some of these points that the Bureau of Mines built a dense-medium pilot plant for cleaning coal at its Northwest Experiment Station in Seattle in 1950. The plant has been operated continuously since that time, and over 50 runs have been made on 7 coals exhibiting a wide range of washability characteristics. An idea of the magnitude of this work will be gained from the fact that examination of the plant products has involved some 600 float-and-sink separations and about 2500 ash determinations. A laboratory pilot plant is especially well adapted to investigate many aspects of performance because close control over test conditions can be exercised and because a large number of tests can be made rapidly. On the other hand, factors such as consumption of medium and other cost items can be investigated satisfactorily only in a commercial plant. Actually, the two forms of investigation should be complementary, with the laboratory work pointing the way for confirming tests in commercial units. Pilot Plant The dense-medium pilot plant employed for this work comprises a 24x30-in. drum-type separating vessel, a 12-in. densifier, a 12-in. magnetic separator, a 26-in. x 9-ft vibrating screen, and the necessary pumps and conveyors for handling materials. Arrangement of these units corresponds with the flowsheet used in most commercial plants, except that a thickener is not provided for the feed to the magnetic separator. Coal and refuse discharge from the separating drum to the vibrator, which is divided longitudinally down the center. Medium draining through the first 3 ft of the screen is recirculated directly to the drum. Sprays on the middle 3 ft of the screen rinse medium from the products, and the last 3-ft section is for dewatering. Dilute medium from the rinsing and dewatering sections is pumped to the magnetic separator, where magnetic solids are recovered. These are pumped to the densifier, from which they return to the medium-drainage sump by gravity through a demagnetizing coil. The drum-type separating vessel is a scale model of a commercial unit. Feed enters axially at one end of the drum just below the surface of the bath, and float material overflows through a circular opening at the other end. Particles sinking to the bottom of the bath are picked up by lifting flights bolted to the inner wall of the drum, elevated out of the bath, and sluiced to the vibrating screen. Baffles suspended in the bath prevent float material from entering the sink-lifting flights. About 8 gpm of medium is used to sluice the feed into the drum. An additional 15 to 24 gpm, depending upon operating conditions, is added through two pipes dipping into the bath behind the baffle on the side where the sink-lifting flights enter the bath. The bath available for separation is 2 ft long and 13 in. wide, giving an area of 2.08 sq ft. Depth of bath from the surface to the top of the sink-lifting flights, measured vertically below the axis, is 6 in.

microscopic ohservations on alloys of organic trzaterials show that dendrite arms can melt off under normal conditiorzs of growth. This occurs because of the interactiorz of' heat and matter fluxes during dendritic growth. The re melting occurs where the den-drite arms are joined onto the main deizclrite sterrz. Many detached crystals can be produced in this fashion. It is postulated that this remelting phenornenon occurs in metal alloys, giving rise to the equi-axed region in castings. Experiments peyformed orr castings of transparent materials support remelting as a primary source of detached crystals. Ob~ervations an equiaxed tones in metal castings are discussed in terms of this and other mechanisms. It is concluded that the partial remelting of dendrites is on important mechanisnl for producing the equiaxed regions in castings. THE freezing of a casting can be divided into three regions: a chill zone formed near the mold wall, a columnar region, and a third region, at the center of the casting, which is called the equiaxed zone. The origin of the grains that comprise the equiaxed region is the subject of this paper. We will first outline the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the origin of the equiaxed region and discuss some recent experiments which cannot be explained by these theories. We will then present some microscopic observations of dendritic growth which have led us to conclude that the equiaxed zone in castings can arise from partial remelting of dendrites. This proposal is supported by observations on transparent castings. Finally, we will discuss several observations on metal castings which could not be explained previously, and which can be accounted for by the present proposal. Previous Mechanisms. Winegard and Chalmers3 pointed out that the molten central region of an ingot could be constitutionally supercooled, because of the solute layer at the growing interface. In this supercooled region, nucleation on particles could occur, giving rise to the equiaxed crystals. Another mechanism has also been suggested,4y5 that the nuclei originate in the chill zone then float or are carried by convection to the center of the casting, where they grow to produce equiaxed crystals. In this case, all the crystals nucleate immediately on casting, so this mechanism will be termed "big-bang" nucleation. Walker's Experiments. J. L. Walker has made observations on the solidification of nickel and Ni-Cu alloys which cannot be accounted for by either of the above mechanisms. In studying the grain size resulting from freezing of nickel at various undercoolings, walker6 found that at large undercoolings the grain size was small, due to mechanical nucleation, as discussed by walker7 and Horvay.' At small undercoolings, the grain size was large, and the growth dendritic. In Ni-Cu alloys, however, for initial undercoolings starting from just below the melting point and extending for a hundred or so degrees of undercooling, fine grains were also observed. Samples were undercooled 200 Centigrade degrees without nucleating, and were then heated 130 Centigrade degrees so that the undercooling was 70 Centigrade degrees, and nucleated. The samples had a small grain size, indicating multiple nucleation. There were no heterogeneous nuclei in the liquid which could operate at the temperature of growth. Constitutional supercooling could not have been greater than the supercooling of the initial melt, since the temperature rose as the freezing continued. walker -as also shown that a Ni-Cu alloy which can be undercooled to below its solidus will produce typical columnar and equiaxed regions when cast into a cold mold. This alloy could not reach a temperature below its solidus by constitutional supercooling. It could not, therefore, have nucleated heterogeneously. The initiation of localized cracking in hydrogenated high strength steel was dependent on the developmeni of a critical hydrogen conceniration and relatively insensitive to the magnitude of the applied stress. The stress was believed to influence the deluyed failure process by providing the means for grouping the hydrogen. On the basis of an assumed distribution law the observed changes in the lower critical stress as a function of notch acuity, yield strength, and temperature were predictable over a significant range of these variables. THE phenomenological characteristics of delayed failure in high-strength steel have been comprehensively investigated and the behavior has been attributed to the strong embrittling action of hydrogen.1-3 Delayed failure or, as it is also termed, static fatigue, is the most sensitive means of detecting hydrogen embrittlement since it allows the maximum time for hydrogen diffusion during a test.3 The nature of delayed failure cail be aptly described by four parameters which are schematically depicted in Fig. 1. The upper critical stress corresponds to the rupture stress in a conventional notch tensile test. The lower critical stress or static fatigue limit is the stress below which no delayed failure will occur. The incubation period is the time required for the formation of the first crack and the fourth parameter is the failure time. An increase in hydrogen content, notch acuity, or strength level of the material increases the susceptibility for delayed failure by decreasing the lower critical stress, the incubation period, and the time to failure.lY3 A decrease in test temperature prolongs the incubation period in accordance with the lower diffusion rate of hydrogen, and also de-

A new center for mining and metallurgical research is developing at Sterling Forest, N. Y., under the auspices of Union Carbide Corp. Here is to be located the Union Carbide Nuclear and Ore Research Laboratories. In truth, history has repeated itself; the Sterling Forest area in the days of the Revolutionary War, and for many years thereafter, was the mining and metallurgical center of the US. For in these Ramapo hills along the New York-New Jersey border, iron ore was mined, pig lion was cast, and the weapons of war and the plowshares of peace were forged. Before embarking on an historical pilgrimage to yesteryear-a brief description of Sterling Forest. Located in Orange County, N. Y., near Tuxedo, immediately north of the New York-New Jersey State line, and just west of the Erie Railroad and the New York State Thruway, Sterling Forest is approximately 35 mi from New York City. Title was acquired in 1956 from the Harriman family by City Investing Co. Its President, Robert W. Dowling, has established himself as a city planner, having conceived such projects as Pittsburgh's Gateway Center and Philadelphia's Penn Center. A unique, self-contained community -is planned that will contain light industry and centers for research and engineering. Colonies of homes will be interspersed throughout the 20,000 acres of forest land, lakes, and rolling hills. Culture will not be neglected, for Sterling Forest will be the new home for the annual Empire State Music Festival The Sterling Forest Gardens, 125 acres of landscaped woodland and streams, will become the "world's largest permanent floral showplace" The Sterling Forest International Research Building was opened earlier this year, and designed to provide all facilities needed by small growth research companies. The first major company to acquire land to construct research buildings at Sterling Forest is Union Carbide. 1763 ... Discovery of iron ore In turning back the pages of history, a fascinating story can be told of special interest to the metallurgist, the mining engineer, and perhaps even the sociologist. For, where new communities are planned today, older communities had been born, matured, and died. In these hills had lived the. iron miners, the blacksmiths, the lumbermen, the masons, and the teamsters that had given America its start in heavy industry. This was the area where the forests were crisscrossed with many wood roads that brought logs to the charcoal pits, and iron ore to the furnaces. Men make history. Our story brings forth many names of men known as ironmasters, or as industrial leaders-Hasenclever, Faesch, Erskine, Townsend, Ryerson, Parrott, Cooper, Hewitt, Jay Cooke, and Harriman. The name Sterling is derived from a Scotch Lord, the Fifth Earl of Stirling (in its earlier spelling). Lord Stirling was one of seven Englishmen granted a patent of land in the Ramapo hills by Queen Anne in 1707, known as the Cheesecock Patent. He sent an agent, Cornelius Board, to America in 1730, with the express purpose of looking for copper deposits. While he found no copper in his travels up and down the Ramapo Valley, he did find iron ore in two localities: first, in the vicinity of what is now Ringwood, N. J.; second, five miles to the north. There he constructed a forge and furnace at the edge of a lake in 1736, naming the land Stirling Property, after his patron. In 1740, the Ogden family in Newark bought land from Board at Ringwood and began smelting of iron in 1741. The Ringwood story Soon, a genius in the person of Peter Hasenclever appeared on the scene. The stoichiometry ranges ofNiOl+y and LiFe,O,-d were established by high-temperatwe electrochemical meas7rements in a stabilized-zirconia electrolyte cell. The results were consistent with doubly ionized cation vacancies in NiO,+y and interstitial lithium or iron ions in . The defect structure of the ternary ferrite was derived from the consideration of equilibration with respect to oxygen between the solid and the gas phase. The absolute magnitudes of defect concentrations were calculated. Pavtial molar enthalpies of oxygen in the compounds were calculated and interpreted in terms of the enthalpy of defect formation in these crystals. NICKEL oxide (NiO,,?) is a metal-deficient, p-type, extrinsic semiconductor whose properties are consistent with a structural model based on the presence of cation vacancies as the predominant ionic defect at sufficiently high temperatures and oxygen activities. A survey of previously reported conductivity studies and the presentation of some more recent conductivity measurements will be given in a later paper.' The absolute magnitude of the equilibrium vacancy concentration in NiO has been reported from combined conductivity and thermogravimetric data of ' However, disagreement exists concerning the state of ionization of the nickel vacancies in NiO. Some authors3-' have proposed that the predominant defects in NiO are singly ionized nickel vacancies and positive holes (h') formed by the reaction where, accorhng to the notation of Kroger and Vink,6'7 Oq represents an oxygen ion on its normal lattice site. Other authors"27E have proposed that doubly ionized nickel vacancies (V{i ) and positive holes are predominant and are formed by the reaction One purpose of the present investigation was to establish the nature of the predominant defect in NiO,+? as well as its equilibrium concentration and thermo-dynamic properties at elevated temperatures and known oxygen activities. To accomplish this purpose, the coulometric titration of oxygen into and out of NiO was accomplished using a galvanic cell involving the calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte. The ternary oxide, lithium ferrite (LiFe50,-6) is ferromagnetic and has the inverse spinel structure LiFe,O,-d Thus, in the ideal stoichiometric XY204 lattice, Fe3 ions occupy one-eighth of the tetrahedral (A) sites, and i' and Fe3' ions share at random one-half of the octahedral (B) sites within the fcc sublattice of oxygen ions.g The structure and thermodynamics of the spinel structures have been comprehensively decribed.'-' A recent compilation of literature for lithium ferrite is also available. 15 Oxygen-excess LiFe50sis not expected to exist because both i' and 17e3& ions are in their highest normal valency states (positive hole formation is not favorable). As will be discussed, equilibration of the ferrite crystal with oxygen of a surrounding gaseous phase will result in the introduction of equilibrium concentrations of ionic and electronic defects. In the Results and Discussion section a defect model for LiFe50,-d is proposed. This defect model is tested by high-temperature coulometric titration experiments. EXPERIMENT The oxygen activities in nonstoichiometric NiOl+, (and also LiFe,O,-d) were measured by means of coulometric titration with the high-temperature galvanic cell The critical characteristic of a suitable experimental cell is the complete isolation of the phase to be investigated in a minimum sized chamber which is free from extraneous sources and sinks for oxygen (leakage). Then oxygen is only admitted to the chamber or removed from it in known amounts by coulometric titration, which involves the passage of oxygen ions through the solid electrolyte with electrochemical oxidation and reduction reactions at the platinum contacts to the electrolyte. The experimental cell is shown in Fig. 1. The cap of the cell was the tip from a closed-end alumina tube, which was found to be leak-free from a helium leak-detector test. This alumina cap was about 1.2 cm OD and about 1.5 cm high. A Zircoa calcia-stabilized zirconia tablet (crucible lid) of 1.5 cm diam and 0.3 cm thickness served as the solid electrolyte. A Pyrex ring of about 0.1 cm thickness was placed between the electrolyte and the cap. FIFTEEN thousand barrels of oil daily, the production of the United States 75 years ago, amounted to more than 90 per cent of world supply. Russia and Romania, neither of which produced as much as one thousand barrels daily, were the only other suppliers in substantial quantity. The adolescent oil industry of the United States, a dozen years old in 1871, was still confined to the Appalachian region. Wells were drilled by cable tools; many of them were "kicked down" by manpower with a spring pole; and depths were measured in hundreds rather than thousands of feet-a 1000-foot well was a deep well. Casing was an innovation, come into general use only a few years previously and still so new as to be subject to bitter patent litigation. Crude oil was packaged in wooden barrels and shipped by flat boat and barge on the creeks and rivers and by railroad. Such pipe lines as existed were only a few miles long. There were many refineries. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the Atlantic seaboard were refining centers. Refineries were very small, however, and their operations consisted essentially in simple fractionation by distillation and treating for quality. The products in demand were burning oil or kerosene and lubricating oils. Oil was not yet used as fuel and gasoline was a nuisance to the refiner.

The formation of secondary - recrystallization tex-tlires in cube-textured 18-8 stain less steel (Type 304) Ilas been studied at three temperatures. Prolonged annealing at 100°'C protluces a PredoninanGly (520) [OOZJ-type texture, which is related to the cube te.ture of the primary lnatrix by a rotation of approxivzately 22 deg around the [001] axis in the rolling direction. Annealing at 1200 or 1300°C facers the formation of the (123)[272/-type texture, which is related to the matrix texture by a [111] rotation of app.voxiniately 40 deg. These observations suggest that in the secondary recrystallization of cube-texlut-ed stainless steel an apparent actilation energy for growth is higher for grains related to the tncrtuix Og [111] rotations thun those reloted by [100] rotations. THE formation of secondary-recrystallization textures in cube-textured primary matrices of fcc metals has been studied widely by various investigators. For Fe-40 pct Ni alloys, Pawlek' and wassermann2 reported that the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of 30 and 38 deg around [001] in the rolling direction. However, Rathenau and custers3 found that, while in one Fe-48 pct Ni alloy, most of the secondary grains were oriented with respect to the cube-textured matrix by rotations around [001] of 26.5 deg, in another alloy of a different origin, the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of approximately 35 deg around a [lll] axis. Similar orientation relationships were also observed between the secondary grains and the cube-textured primary matrices of copper.4"a No attempt was made to differentiate these two types of orientation relationships; reorientation by either a [111] or a [100] rotation was considered to be equally favored. The present investigation consisted of a study of the secondary recrystallization textures in cube-textured stainless steel. It was noted that the secondary grains formed in stainless steel were considerably smaller than those of Fe-Ni alloys or copper. This offered the advantage that the secondary recrystallization texture could be determined by the texture-goniometer technique, and a more detailed study of the textural development during the course of secondary recrystallization could be made. The effect of annealing temperature on the formation of secondary-recrystallization textures was also investigated. MATERLAL AND METHOD It was shown earlier"-" that a strong cube texture can be obtained in 18-8 stainless steels by rolling at 800°C to produce the copper-type deformation texture, followed by annealing at 800" to 1000°C for recrystallization. To improve the cube texture for the present study, a commercial-grade 18-8 stainless steel (Type 304) was rolled at 800°C first to 5 mm (0.2 in.) thick plates. Three of these plates were then stacked and welded together along the edges into a sandwich assembly. After annealing at 900°C for 20 min: the assembly was finally rolled at 800'C to 90 pct reduction in thickness with reheats and end-for-end reversals after each pass. Only the central strip, which was reduced from 5.0 to 0.50 mm (0.7 in. to 0.020 in.) thick, was used. The chemical composition of the steel in weight percent was as follows: C, 0.06; Mn, 0.38: Cr, 18.71; Ni, 9.56: P, 0.011; S, 0.009; and Si, 0.39. The purpose of rolling the strip in a sandwich assembly was to prevent direct contact between the central strip and the rolls. It was observed earlier" that, when the strip was rolled at 800°C without being enclosed in a sandwich assembly, the cube texture obtained by subsequent annealing at 900" or 1000° C for recrystallization was largely confined to the central section of the strip, while most of the recrystallized grains formed in the surface section of the strip were not cube-textured. This was obviously due to the fact that the actual temperature at the strip surface during rolling, as a result of direct contact between the strip and the cold and massive rolls, was considerably lower than 800°C. By using a sandwich assembly for hot rolling, the cube texture obtained upon subsequent annealing for recrystallization was found to extend through the entire thickness of the strip. After rolling, the central strip was taken from the sandwich assembly. and cut into specimens. Prior to annealing. the specimens were etched to 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) thick. A tube furnace provided with a purified, dry argon atmosphere was used for annealing. Textures were determined by the reflection technique. using a Siemens automatic texture-goniometer and ZrOz-filtered MoKa radiation. With a time constant of 4 sec. the preferred orientation of the secondary grains could be measured satisfactorily by the integrated intensities. Both (111) and (200) reflections were measured, and corresponding pole figures were constructed according to the techniques described previously.10 The agreement between results deduced from these two reflections was excellent. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Secondary-Recrystallization Texture due to Prolonged Annealing at 1000°C. Fig. 1 shows the primary-recrystallization texture of a specimen annealed at 1000°C for 30 min. A substantial improvement in both sharpness and intensity of the cube texture, owing to the present processing method, can be noted readily by comparing Fig. 1 with similar pole figures shown earlier in Refs. 9 and 11. All attempts to replace silica brick by other refractory materials for this purpose have failed, but the reason for this failure has remained obscure; we shall give an explanation later in this paper. Before the war, silica brick employed in France came principally from abroad, for which reason, since the beginning of hostilities, certain French steel works have been seriously handicapped. Our attention was first directed to the question by M. Bied, Engineer of the Teil Works. With him, we began certain investigations, at first using our laboratory and the furnaces of neighboring steel works. The larger part of our experiments, however, have been made in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne. For the heating of our samples, we are deeply obliged to MM.
