Locality and Geological Occurrence.—The Atpine region of Southwest. Colorado. cort~prieiog the San Juan and Uncon~paghre Mountains, is con~posed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic schiets, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, arid Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this directiou, the Uocampaglire receives from the east the Red Casm Creek. Following up the narrow canon we find the section through white. sandotone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-like character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, ad we have entered crysralline rock—porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandsbne, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is serui'fusd. Ascending still higher, a small

This paper presents an analytical solution of the problem of freezing of a semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature; in this analysis accoz~nt is taken of the heat evolution during the solid-state transformations in the frozen skin. The regions where transformations occur are treated as plane isothermal heat sources; i.e., the rates of transformations are assumed to be infinite. In the model considered, three plane heat sources are assumed to be present in the frozen solid. The solution yields the temperature distribution in the solid, the rates of movement of the heat sources , and the rate of movement of the solidification front. It is shown that, although the sum of the heats of transformations in the solid is about 20 or 43 pct of the heat of fusion of iron or manganese, respectively, the effect of the heat evolution in solid-state transformations on the rate of solidification is insignzficant. IN several recent mathematical studies of solidification of liquid metals'-3 no account was taken of the heat evolution accompanying the solid-state transformations. In the case of, for example, steel, there are several phase transformations 6 -y, y -a, and the magnetic transformation. Whether or not a significant error is introduced into the mathematical simulation of solidification processes by the omission of the heat effects associated with these phase transformations is not known. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of these phase transformations on the temperature distribution and the rate of solidification based solely on the heat transfer point of view. That is, for the sake of simplicity, freezing of a pure metal with solid-state transformations will be considered. The mathematical model which represents the present problem includes four moving heat sources representing freezing and phase transformations, 6— y — a — ferromagnetic. The thermal properties such as conductivity and specific heat, and so forth, are different from one phase to the other. But they are considered to be uniform over any particular phase. The usual Fourier heat flow law is employed. The concept of conservation of energy is applied at every heat source in order to estimate their rate of movement. The temperature distribution in the solid and the positions where transformations occur are expressed analytically in terms of error function solutions and four coefficients which are determined from four nonlinear algebraic equations. These coefficients can be calculated either by trial and error or by any numerical method. Recently reported high -temperatlnre thermal data have been incorporated in a reuieu' of the therinody-r~ar,zic propesties of iron. The recent data permit mot corlsisterlt and reliuble choices to be made for many of the pvoperties, resnlling in bettev eslablished tabrtlations of the thermodynamic functions. Values of Cp, h°t- - H°298. s°t - S2sa, and (G°T -H298/T are tabulated for -the solid and liquid phases of iron in both stable and melastable regions. Consistency of the tabulations has been maintained to the precision necessr~vg to yield the Gibbs energy change belween the bcc (a, 8) and fcc (y) phases of iron at temperatures pertinenl to alloy studies. THE importance of the metal iron has stimulated many investigations of its thermodynamic properties at elevated temperatures. Reviews and summaries of the data have appeared from time to time. Among these the 1951 paper of Darken and smith' deserves highest recognition for the quality of its criticism and for the precision and thermodynamic consistency of its tabulations. These and the more recent table of Kaufman, Clougherty, and weiss2 reproduce the Gibbs energy of the (a, 6)--Y transformation with sufficient sensitivity for alloy studies. Other recent compilations of equal validity3-' make no attempt to do this. Since this Gibbs energy change is not greater than 22 cal per g-atom over the temperature range 1100° to 1800°K, it is obviously desirable to tabulate values of (G°t - H298)/T to four places of decimals even though the absolute accuracy would not warrant such precision. The necessity for reconsideration of the problem is emphasized by the recent publication of several important researches on the enthalpy and heat capacity of iron. The older work is well-covered in the reviews cited and will be mentioned here only when actually employed in the tabulations. GAMMA IRON Transition temperatures are taken from the selec -tions of Elliott and Gleiser,5 based on the work of Boulanger7 and earlier workers. For the a-y (A3) transition at 1184°K we retain the value 215 cal per g-atom adopted by Darken and smith.' It has received confirmation in the recent work of Dench and Kubaschewski,' and of Braun8 using adiabatic calori-metry, and of Wallace, Sidles, and Danielson10 using a pulse heating technique. The enthalpy data of Olette and ferrier" and of Anderson and Hultgren12 at higher and lower temperatures may be extended to 1184°K to give the following values which are adjusted to the required value of ? 1184 Ha,1184 Ha 298 = 8030 cal per g-atom [11 hr,1184-ha298 = 8245 cal per g-atom [2]

Crushing and grinding of gypsum demands con- trolled processing to a fineness suitable for further treatment of the mineral into end products, and into various sizes of material which are themselves saleable products. The majority of gypsum tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for wallboard. Therefore, mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off intermediate products to meet various customer requirements. This forces companies into compromises at times in equipment installations. Normally, 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product are marketed and these are generally the fineness of material to be used as stucco for wallboard. These sizes are produced by controlled crushing, grinding and sizing. How Ore Characteristics Guide Processing First, gypsum as a mineral (CaS0;2H,O) is number two on the Mohs scale two of hardness; only talc is softer, Despite being soft, gypsum is tough, a factor which is of critical importance when developing equipment specifications. In addition, of the increasing volumes of rock handled, the associated and included impurities such as anhydrite, silica or lime- stones are found to be relatively abrasive.

Several studies concluded by various agencies (Coal Outlook, 1982; Malhotra, 1977) indicate that both the national and international markets for utility coal, which have been growing in recent years due to the uncertainties in petroleum supplies, will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. The areas where the Gemand for utility coal is projected to increase sub- stantially lie close to the midwestern coal fields, in the southeastern US, and in western Europe. Illinois has all the elements necessary to become an important exporter of thermal coal (Library of Con- gress, 1981) provided the coal is desulfurized to meet the environmental restrictions. Because of its high energy content, Illinois Basin coal, if desulfurized, has great potential for competing in the utility markets both nationally and internationally. Sulfur in coal occurs in organic and inorganic forms. The inorganic sulfur in Illinois coal is almost exclusively pyrite. The pyrite can be liberated by grinding and removed from the coal by such techniques as froth flotation. The Illinois Basin coals reportedly contain (Gluskoter and Simon, 1968) an average of 3.57% sulfur. Out of this, 2.06% is pyritic, 0.08% is sulfate, and 1.46% is organic sulfur.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's con- trolling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, for good plant control, two basic requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

On Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, 1915, were held in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building the inaugural exercises of The Engineering Foundation, established by the United Engineering Society. The initial gift to the Foundation of $200,000, made by Ambrose Swasey, Past President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was formally accepted at this time. So far as known this is the first instance of a foundation devoted to engineering purposes. This meeting con-stituted also an appropriate tribute to the generous gift made to the Foundation and gave opportunity for expression of the satisfaction and approval which are felt by engineers everywhere at the establishment of a means of promoting the good of mankind through the work of the engineer along the broadest lines. Gano Dunn, President of the United Engineering Society and Past President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, acted as presiding officer, and on the platform were seated representatives of the three societies constituting the United Engineering Society, and of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Members of the four societies and many other friends interested in the profession composed the audience.

Chromium alloys were coated with silicon, alumi-nuw, and boron by pack cementation. None of these simple coatings provided adequate nitridation/oxida-tion protection for a Cr -0.17pct Y alloy substrate as shown by a substantial Increase in the ductile -brittle transition temperature after air exposure for 100 hr at 2100°F. Iron-modified silicide coatings afforded good protection, holding the transition temperature of air-exposed specimens to 350° F compared to 200° F for uncoated unexposed specimens and 800°F for un-coated exposed specimens. Additional attractive cant-binations of modi-tying elements included Fe-mo, Fe-Mo-W, Fe-,Mo-W-Ti, and V-Mo-W-Ti. THE desirability of increased operating tempera-tures as a mcans of improving the performance of ad-vanced air breathing engines has resulted in emphasis on the development of materials with high operating temperature capabilities. Chromium, because of its relatively low density (7.19 g per cu cm), high melt-ing point (3410°F), and adequate strength upon alloy-ing, is a candidate material for turbine buckets and stator vanes of advanced air breathing engines. How-even, chromium is not without severe limitations, the major one being susceptibility to nitrogen embrittle-ment upon exposure to air at high temperatures.1,2 For example, a 25-hr air exposure of a Cr-5 pct W* * All compositions in wt pct. alloy at 2100°F produces a 600°F increase in the duc-tile-brittle transition temperature.' Although dilute alloying with such elements as yttrium, lanthanum, arid thorium3,4 or strong nitride formers5 has been shown capable of reducing nitrogen embrittlement, it is apparent that some additional form of surface protection, such as coatings or claddings, will be required for long time service in air breathing engines. Studies of aluiminide6 and silicide7 coatings and of nickel-base claddingsl on chromium alloys to date have suggested that these protection systems are inadequate. Of the aluminidc systems Studied,6 a simple aluminum and an Fe-Al coating on a Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y alloy showed the lowest air exposure weight gains. However, the air exposures raised the ductile-brittle transition temperature of the coated specimens to above 1600°F from an initial level in unexposed specimens of about 500°F. A second in-vestigation for protection of Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y employed gas pressure bonded alloy foils as protective claddings.1 An aluminized Ni-20 pct Cr-20 pct W alloy plus an unalloyed tungsten barrier layer gave the best performance with air exposure lives based on appearance and weight gains of over 600 hr at 2100°F. NOT much serious consideration was liven to the military aspects of raw materials before World War 1. Following the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914, however. this situation was promptly changed. Disruption of allied shipping and German submarine warfare soon cut off a substantial part of the material the United Staten was accustomed to receiving from overseas. At the same time, raw material requirements rose rapidly as the tempo of industrial preparedness was stepped up in anticipation of war. By April 1917, when we entered the war, serious shortages threatened and consideralde attention was being given to our "deficcient" raw materials. The term "war mineral," began to appear after we became active combatants. But there is no evidence that "strategics" and "critical." as now used, had entered the lexicon of our raw materials experts during the last war nor were there apparently any officially recog¬nized list or definitions of what con¬stituted war materials. According to G. A. Roush in his book, `'Strategic Mineral Supplies," C. K. Leith, while serving as mineral advisor to the War Industries Board. compiled the first unofficial list of deficient minerals in 1917.

The carbon content of a number of alloys ranging (before carburitation) from purified iron to purified cobalt was determined for fixed activities of carbon by equilibration with each of six CO-CO2 atmosphere at 1000°C. At fixed carbon activity, the carbon content decreases continuously with increasing cobalt content. For concentrations of 0 to 50 at. pct Co the results can be expressed by a linear interaction equation of the type In y2 = 7.76n2/(n1+n3)+ 2.30 n3/(n1+n3) where y2 is the activity coefficient of carbon (standard state such that y2— 1 as n2 — 0 in the Fe-C binary) and n1, n2, and n3 are the number of atoms of iron, carbon, and cobalt per unit weight of alloy. The results are also given in terms of the a functions. In the same concentration range, the results are in accord with the regular solution theory of Alcock and Richardson. THE carbon content of Fe-Si, Fe-Mn, and Fe-Ni alloys at fixed activities of carbon has been reported previously.'-, The present work extends R. P. SMITH, Member AIME, is Research Chemist, E. C. Bain Laboratory for Fundamental Research, United States Steel Corp., Research Center, Monroeville, Pa. these measurements to a series of Fe-Co alloys. These alloys, like the Fe-Ni alloys, are fcc ("aus-tenitic") over the entire range of composition at 1000°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made from electrolytic cobalt and Plast-Iron in a small vacuum-melting furnace. A small amount of graphite was added to each melt to keep the oxygen content low. The ingots were analyzed for iron and carbon: the amount of cobalt was obtained by difference. Analysis of the top and bottom of the ingots indicated that they were uniform in alloy content. Except for the pure cobalt the ingots were hot-rolled to approximately 0.15 cm thickness, cleaned by sandblasting, then cold-rolled to about 0.045 cm. We were not successful in cold rolling the pure cobalt; therefore it was hot-rolled to the final thickness. The last traces of surface oxide were removed by acid pickel, then the samples were treated in a hydrogen-2 pct water vapor mixture at 1100°C to remove carbon and most of the oxygen. The carburizing procedure was similar to that previously described.1,2,4 The alloys in the form of strips about 1.7 cm wide, 7.5 cm long, and 0.04 cm thick, together with a similar specimen of purified iron, were equilibrated with each of six CO-CO2 mixtures of fixed composition, then quenched in the

IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. INCREASED production and con¬sumption of all metals, indicate the progress of industry toward that condition formerly thought to be normal. With no market limitations on silver and gold the two new precious-metal mines, the Silver Queen (now the Golden Queen), in southern California, and the Sunshine, at Kellogg in northern Idaho have made progress toward a high routine production. The Golden Queen 300-ton mill is finished and ready. The Sunshine mill has been enlarged and production is now at the rate of 500 tons per day of high-grade silver ore. The Hecla Mining Co. is developing the Polaris vein, which should be the extension of the Sunshine to the east. Some rich ore is reported. The developments of the' East African Gold Fields, Ltd., in the Lupa gold field of Tanganyika Territory, have made good progress, but operation in an isolated locality is not rapid and a large plant will be required. There have been no other discoveries reported that can be compared with the three mentioned, but production has increased, with greater capacity in dredging equipment and underground mines more adequately prepared for production.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out in 1959 to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geo-chemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 21 returned completed questionnaires and of these, 15 companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only three have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. The others have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick and in the Cordillera in areas of light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid when accompanied by other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas. GEOCHEMICAL SURVEYS Table I reviews the type of geochemical surveys used by these companies, and the following points of interest should be noted.

The construction of rescue-apparatus on the principle of furnishing the wearer with air from a tank containing it under high pressure was given up by inventors about 20 years ago. Such an apparatus must supply continuously, for not less than two hours, nearly 50 liters of pure air at atmospheric pressure per minute, or a total of 6,000 liters (210 cu. ft.); and a cylinder containing this amount of air, under 2,000 lb. pressure, would weigh 180 lb. or more. Although apparatus has been recently constructed utilizing liquefied air, no experiments have been made to determine the regularity with which the air is generated, nor has its chemical composition been determined. Moreover, the chief objection to such an apparatus is the difficulty and cost of keeping on hand a large quantity of liquefied air. John Dasher (Materials and Processes Engineer, Crucible Steel Co. of America, Pittsburgh, Pa.) The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent work, dramatic results, and persuasive explanation on the neglected subject of the temperature variable in soap flotation. The explanation includes why heat is helpful in conditioning and why heat is helpful in flotation. This is a fine start, but I hope the work will be continued to show which is the major effect. In the work of Noman and Dash er(1) it was found that substantially all the benefit of heat came from the conditioning step, and that results were much better if a thick pulp was conditioned hot and then diluted with unheated (or less heated) water for flotation (or agglomerate tabling) than if the same quantity of heat was used to condition and float at some intermediate temperature. In other words, heat for conditioning gives a Rood return, but additional heat for dilution water is near or beyond the point of diminishing return. Strathmore R. B. Cooke, lwao lawsaki, and Hyung Su0p Choi (Authors' Reply) Mr. Dasher'skind comments on our paper are appreciated. In view of the relative simplicity of empirical investigationsof the temperature variable upon conditioning and flotation, it ispuzzling why the subject is so neglected. Our work, being sub sidiary to the main investigation of the effect of structure of fatty acid collectorsupon iron ore flotation, was quite restricted, but we intend to return to the subject as soon as possible. Mr. Dasher's point, that given a certain number of calories it is better to invest them for conditioning in a thick pulp rather than to spread them out for both conditioning and flotation operations, is well taken and cannot be argued. On the other hand there is no question that high temperature during the flotation of iron ores induces superior frothing characteristics, and, in particular, greatly augments the rate of flotation and markedly decreases the time required for "difficult" particles to float.

tested without knowing anything of their chemical composition. I had these pieces separately placed upon 10-inch bearings under a 7-gross ton lianlrner, a piece of 2½-inch round iron laid upon them as a fuller, and the hammer allotved to fall from 20 inches above the fuller, which, according to Haswell, gave a ldow of 67.75 gross tons. The pieces were then turned orcr, the fuller placed upon the convex surface, and the harnnler allowed to fall from 13 inches above the fuller, giving a blow of 58.46 gross tons. You will see that the rails do aot show ally bigrls of ruptnre, and their color at the points of torture prove them to have been absolutely cold when the test was made. I thirk these rails ought to be reasonably safe in the track. As you see by this piece of the head of one of these rails, I had it plarred, and then some teeth cut in it by a cold clrisel, and one-half of them pounded down with a hammer. The teeth of my rack did not break off. The analyses of these rails substquently made are: I. 11. Carbon,... 0.110 0.880 Silicon,..0.050 0.058 Phosphorus ,..0.086 0.082 Manganese,.. 0.042 0 840 In conclusion, I will say that Dr. Dudley's paper as a contribu tion to our knowledge of steel rails is valuable and interesting, but I protest against his conclusions king reoeived as manufacturing or comtnercial axioms. From its being presented in the form-of a report to the leading railroad of the country from one of its trusted officers, as well as from the tone of the concluding deductions, it is liable to be so received by railroad men. If any railroad com pany desires rails made under either of Dr. Dudley's formulas, and are willing to pay a price large enough to cover the loss in making them, dl and good; but so long as the rail makers are compelled to gwrrantee the wear of their rails for a given number of years, justice reqnires that. the composition of the steel from which these rails are made should be left to them. Gach-Saran.—The most important development of 1937 has been the successful completion of initial exploratory wells in the Gach Saran (formerly known as Gach-i-Qaraghuli) field, about 125 miles southeast of Haft Kel. Two of these wells are rated at 33,000 bbl. per day at flowing pressures exceeding 800 lb. Drilling is proceeding with the object of delimiting the structure. Exploratory drilling is also being undertaken in several areas within the company's concession. In the producing fields the policy of controlled production has been maintained as in the past, and drilling has been limited to that required for maintenance of production and general control of the fields. Acid treatment to increase production when desired has continued to be successful in most cases. The policy of returning, as and when necessary, surplus products to the reservoir has been maintained. Haft Ke1.—Drilling to explore deeper formations has been undertaken, but has not progressed far enough for conclusive results to be drawn. Gasoline retention in the crude by means of multistage pressure stabilization has been continued as in past years. Separation pressures are as follows: well-head separators, 500 lb.; central battery, 190, 85, 40, 20 and 10 lb. per sq. in., respectively. The stabilized crude is delivered to pipe line at atmospheric pressure, or ex the 10-lb. stage, in accordance with refinery requirements.

Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p'robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. This fli&orescence is corrzpletely quenched in YV04:Ncl crystals. This and other evidence of energy trut~sjer from the lattice is repovted. Optzcul atz 1user pvope 1-ties o! YI'U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts' wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.' This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d'~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU'~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a
