MINING geology, both theoretical and practical, continued to make noteworthy progress during 1938. Mining companies generally, stimulated especially by the improvement in economic conditions during the latter part of the year, extended their workings and developed new ore bodies. Federal and state surveys expanded their search for favorable localities and actual ore bodies, with corresponding enlargement of regional knowledge. Theoretical investigations covered geochemistry of ore deposition, structural control of mineralization, and mineralogy of the ores (chiefly aided by the microscope). More geochemical work is greatly needed: ore searching is still too purely empirical, based on features that have been recognized else- where. Thus, clearer understanding of the conditions essential to transportation of metal salts is needed. Jean Verhogen has suggested that solubilities

PRODUCTION COSTS, profits, and quality are the primary factors in the peacetime production of iron and steel. In a war emergency, as high production rates and as complete utilization of readily available raw materials as possible, consistent with securing passable quality, become the most important factors. In this connection a discussion of some of the recent developments in the German iron and steel industry, where the problem of scarcity has naturally always been more acute than in the U.S.A., maybe of interest. To get more pig iron out of the existing blast furnaces it was necessary to obtain the maximum efficiency from the iron-bearing raw materials. This was achieved by eliminating all "excess baggage," chiefly by beneficiating the ore. The preparatory work for this was done by various methods which are effective when the ore either is too poor or contains too many impurities or too much gangue. Some of the beneficiation methods are well known, some are combinations of wet-mechanical, magnetic, roasting, sintering, and other treatments.

MINE safety is of the utmost importance to all operators and most operations have a safety organization, or safety inspector, whose job it is to be continually on the alert to detect and correct the hazards of mine operation. Reports from the Bureau of Mines show that next to roof falls, gas presents the greatest hazard in mining. The Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6680 shows that 162 explosions occurred in the United States during the five-year period ending June 30, 1932. Deaths resulting from these explosions amounted to 984, with a great many disabled and disfigured. A fatality rate of 6.07 persons shows the ex¬treme severity of this hazard to the industry. Various mine appliance companies have put on the market instruments for methane detection, which record in direct percentages the amount of methane present in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, few mining companies are using these instruments, however. Those available include the Burrell methane detector, the Wolf, the Martienssen, the Mine Safety Appliance detector, and the Union Carbide Company methane detector, which last I have used extensively in making mine inspections.

YEARS of experience and research have shown that molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium are among the most useful and effective elements in augmenting the high-temperature strength of heat-treatable, ferritic steels. Grün, for example, in conducting an early survey of the strengthening effects of various elements in annealed, low-carbon steel at 750° and 930°F (400° and 500°C), found molybdenum and vanadium to be the most effective.' Holtmann comprehensively studied the strengthening effects of molybdenum and vanadium in quenched and tempered steels at 930°F as a function of microstructure and carbon content.' He found creep strength to be related to the saturation of the austenite at the austenitizing temperature, such that strength is increased by alloying until the y loop is reached—the terminus of complete austenitization. Beyond this degree of alloying, the inability to heat treat will result in lower strength, at least for low and moderate creep temperatures. Tungsten, owing to higher cost than molybdenum, has been little used in ferritic high-temperature steels. As a result, very few investigations have been made of its high-temperature strengthening ability, and reliable data on its effectiveness are not available. Grün rated tungsten far less effective than molybdenum at 930°F (500°C) on a weight-percentage basis.' However, Tammann has found that tungsten is as effective as molybdenum in raising the recrystallization temperature of iron. For this reason Smith, in a review of the subject, has advocated a re-examination of the influence of tungsten on the high-temperature strength of steel.' In any study of the effects of alloying additions on high-temperature properties, recognition must be made of the many variables involved, some of which can be controlled but have been ignored in innumerable investigations of the past, and some of which are difficult or even impossible to control. One cannot, for example, assign a definite strengthening index to any one alloying element, for this will be dependent upon the microstructure (heat treatment and mechanical treatment), testing con- ditions (temperature, time, and stress), and the complete composition of the steel (accompanying alloying elements, impurities, etc.). One ever-appear ing variable, hardness or tensile strength at room temperature, may be eliminated by heat treating all of the alloys to a single hardness level. An attempt may be made to control the variable of primary quenched structure by oil or water quenching the test specimen. The control of such variables may not be possible in cases of widely varying compositions, but at least such deviations should be recognized. Material and Procedure The alloys, made as 30-lb ingots in an induction furnace, all had the same base composition of about 0.18 pct C, 0.85 pct Mn, and 0.48 pct Si. They were grouped as follows: Mo Group—Containing up to 5.2 pct Mo. W Group-Containing up to 6.0 pct W. V Group—Containing up to 3.3 pct V. Mo-V Group—Containing up to 2.7 pct Mo and up to 1.4 pct V. Mo-W Group—Containing up to 2.5 pct Mo and up to 2.5 pct W. The steels, listed in Table I, were forged to ¾ in. sq bars and the material for the high-temperature, rupture-test specimens was further swaged to %-in. round bars.

Herern is described a heat conduction model which has been developed to predict the pressure distribution within a reservoir being subjected to rrnsteady-state depletion. Although potentiometric models have been widely used to study reservoir pressure distribution, their application is limited to the study of steady-state cases. Electrical analyzers may be used to study unsteady-state phenomena, but their application and simulation have certain limitations. Much of the now accepted theory of unsteady-state fluid flow in porous media has evolved from previous heat conduction knowledge. An analogy between the flow of fluid in an unsymmetrical reservoir and con-duct ion of heat in a similarly shaped unsymmetrical metal plate is made to show adaptability of the hear conduction principle to transient reservoir cases. A description of the model and necessary instrumenrarion is included. Data show influence of well location on pressure distribution during unsteady-state deple[ion. Application of results is made to a hypothetical reservoir and to a reservoir located in an irregular aquifer. INTRODUCTION Development of methods for predicting behavior of petroleum reservoirs has resulted partially from adaptation of electrical and thermal flow concepts to the flow of fluids through porous media. Extensive investigation of electrical and thermal flow problems has resulted in mathematical solutions applicable to many reservoir problems. The relative ease of measuring electrical flow has brought wide acceptance of the use of the potentiometric model to study certain field problems. Potentiometric models are restricted to the study of steady-state conditions because of the instantaneous response of electrical flow to changes in the applied potential. The electrical reservoir analyzer has been one of our most useful instruments for studying certain phases of unsteady-state behavior1. Other than approximation techniques, no method exists for determining pressure distribution in an irregular reservoir during primary depletion. Heat flow, like fluid flow, is inherently transient. The model described here was developed to use this transient nature of heat flow, measurable in the laboratory, to simulate transient flow of fluids in the porous medium of the reservoir above the bubble point. A metal plate shaped like the reservoir to be studied was heated by a "well" source. Temperature increase in the plate is analogous to pressure decline in the field if the field is being depleted, or pressure increase if fluid is being injected. This study is intended to determine the feasibility of using the transient nature of the heat flow to study the transient behavior of fluid flow. It is hoped that this new technique will aid in the understanding of one of the more complex phases of reservoir engineering. THE FLUID FLOW-HEAT CONDUCTION ANALOGY The similarity of the equations which describe the flow of fluids through a porous medium and the conduction of heat through a solid is well known2. Rate of flow of fluids is given by Darcy's law3. while the rate of flow of heat is given by Fourier', (I,, - KA 4T........(2) Combining Eq. 1 with the equation of continuity for a compressible liquid", i.e.,results in Expressing y in terms of the compressibility, i.e., pr = peey ,..........(5) and by expanding the exponential and neglecting higher orders of cp one can obtain

This volume summarizes characteristics and the geological setting of porphyry copper deposits of the Western Hemisphere. Grouped by characteristics, porphyry copper deposits are described in six regions: Andean orogen, Appalachian orogen, Alaska, northern Cordilleran orogen, southern Cordilleran orogen, and the Caribbean. Each region has its own peculiarities of geologic setting, and those deposit characteristics that may be projected from one chapter to another will be used in reaching the conclusions from which to draw genetic models for porphyry copper deposits. The term porphyry in this volume denotes a type of ore deposit, rather than a rock classification. The classification of intrusive igneous rocks used in this volume is shown in Figs. 36a and 42 (pp. 103, 130). Some modern classifications suggest mineral-ratio definitions other than those used in this volume; however, most literature references cited are based on the classification shown in Figs. 36a and 42. The reader should be aware, therefore, that quartz monzonite in this volume contains from 35% to 65% potassuim feldspar and at least 10% quartz. A term used in this volume is defined where introduced within the context of a specific chapter. Distensional tectonic conditions are used in the sense of Cady (1972) in the Appalachian orogen, for example. Porphyry copper deposits are defined as large bodies of mineralized rock, usually including a porphyritic intrusive phase, that have copper sulfide minerals disseminated through them. The definition has no commercial connotation and is used strictly in a noneconomic sense to encompass the spectrum of copper mineralization associated with these deposits. Terms commonly accepted in the literature are not defined. Porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits commonly are distinguished by most economic geologists. The basis for the separation is summarized in one chapter of this volume. To permit the reader to more easily peruse the bibliography for any particular region, references will be found at the end of each chapter. The bibliography is not intended to be complete, but is designed to provide adequate minimum coverage for descriptions of deposits in the chapter concerned. Each entry is properly referenced in the text of that chapter to facilitate the reader's research into any particular topic. This volume is written from the point of view of the exploration geologist whose task it is to evaluate the structural, petrographic, mineralogic, and metallogenic characteristics of a porphyry copper deposit. The goal of the evaluation is to determine if, and where, concentrations of metals may exist in an igneous- hydrothermal system that includes the most complex set of geologic factors found in any of the many types of ore deposits. The successful porphyry copper geologist is simultaneously a petrographer, geochemist, structural geologist, and mineralogist. Some porphyry copper deposits have developed in volcanic arcs underlain by a Benioff seismic zone with a trench paralleling the arc. The most convincing example of a deposit known to have developed in an environment where subduction is an active process is the 3.3 m.y. (million years) old Dry Creek occurrence in the Aleutian arc (this volume). On the other hand, the younger deposits in the Cascades appear to have formed in a volcanic arc lacking both the Benioff zone and the offshore trench. Subduction is not widely accepted as an active mechanism for the period when the younger Cascade deposits formed. Subduction has also been questioned for deposits formed at a great distance from a plate boundary (e.g., Bingham). Drilling and blasting 12-in. blastholes started about the middle of 1946 and has worked out so well that about one half of the blasting, formerly done with 9-in. holes, is now done with 12-in. holes. In most of this work the harder benches were chosen for the 12-in. size because these were the areas where the greatest difficulty was encountered in thorough fragmentation. At the start of this experimental work a 42-T Bucyrus- Erie churn drill was available whereas all other blasthole drilling was being done with 29-T rigs. The large drill was first equipped with a standard 9-in. string of tools but it could not drill quite as fast as the 29-T drills. How- ever, when the weight of the string was increased about 700 lb, or to a total weight of about 3500 lb, it was found that the 42-T exceeded the drilling speed of the 29-T by about 25 per cent. When a 12-in. bit was substituted for the 9-in. bit the 42-T rig again dropped behind the drill- ing rate of the 29-T rigs. At this stage of the experiment the 42-T was using a 12-in. bit with detachable points and the total weight of the string of tools was about 3800 lb. It took longer to change the drill points than it did the regulation bit and this accounted for some of the slower drilling rate. When a heavier stem and standard construction 12-in. bits were used it was found that the 42-T could drill a 12-in. hole slightly faster than a 29-T could drill a 9-in. hole even in the hardest rock in the pit.

When mining operations of The Eagle-Picher Co. began in the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc mining field in 1949, all underground loading of broken ore and waste was by caterpillar-tracked machines. Beginning in 1956 rubber-tired end-loaders were brought in; ultimately they completely supplanted the tracked units. End-loaders proved to have the mobility needed for the mining conditions and additional merit in auxiliary capacities. Eagle-Picher operates five mines in this area; two are entered by shafts and three by inclined adits. Several ore zones, some of which are attenuated over a considerable distance, are worked from the same entry. Consequently underground haulage roads connecting or following these orebodies have attained great length. In addition, working places are often widely separated because of the character of the mining operations which include pillar recovery and extending haulage connections into old workings. At one mine, the haulage distance is 5000 ft on either side of the shaft, at another the maximum one-way distance is 8400 ft, and at another the present road system of 6800 ft is expected to reach 10,000 to 12,000 ft.

UNTIL recently, practically all geophysical prospecting in Australia was conducted by government departments, either by the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia or the New South Wales Department of Mines. At present, in addition, the Shell company is carrying out an extensive geophysical campaign in South West Queensland. The Northern Australia Survey has now been in operation for over six years, its work being carried out principally in the northern and central parts of Australia over an area of about a million square miles. At present this Survey is being brought to a conclusion but it appears certain that the geophysical section will be transferred to a Commonwealth Government department on a permanent basis. At present the officers of the Geophysical Section are preparing or have issued some 150 reports on their field work and also a special technical report on the geophysical practice of the Survey.

A METALLURGICAL research building is to be erected for the Armour Research Foundation at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It will be located at the corner of Federal and 34th Sts., Chicago, and fully equipped will cost $250,000. It will provide the Middle West with the largest and most complete of facilities for the conduct of developmental and industrial research in this field. The new building will be constructed around an existing foundry and metallurgical research building which has become too small to carry on and service the many research projects contracted for by the Foundation, having to do with steel, alloys, and nonferrous metals. After two bays of the new unit have been completed, the old unit will be torn down and the new one completed.

Partly under the inspiration of leaders whose influence has been felt not only nationally, but internationally, - partly through the recognition of the service that engineers have been able to render to the nation during the recent crisis, a new self-consciousness has been acquired by the individuals, and now this self-consciousness seeks expression in opportunities for service and participation in public affairs. The engineer . no longer sees himself a mere reservoir of information to be tapped when some one is in need of cold facts, no. more an administrator of mere material things, but a potential administrator of- public affairs, a citizen and a human being, with the responsibilities, as well as the privileges of citizenship.

DURING late years, the proportion of beileficiated iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior District has increased very rapidly. By benefication is meant washing, screening, drying, sintering or any process by which the grade or structure of the crude ore is improved before shipment. In 1915, only 3,000,- 000 tons, or 9 per cent, of t6e total Minnesota shipment was beneficiated ore, compared with 13,500,000 tons, or 35 per cent, of the total Minnesota shipment in 1925. This increase is, of course, due to the fact that iron and steel can be made more cheaply after beneficiating these ores than they could have been had these ores not been so treated. Fundamentally, however, several causes contribute to the necessity for beneficiating iron ores, such as depletion of the reserves of high-grade ores, the iron ore leasing systems and taxation methods and, at the smelting plants, a better understanding of blast-furnace operations, increased operating costs and increased sulfur content of blast-furnace coke. As economic conditions change, it is by no means certain that the proportion of beneficiated ore shipped each year is going to continue to increase. Undoubtedly some of the beneficiation operations are not economically sound at the present time and what the future has in store for the iron ore industry is problematical. Generally speaking, the cost of fuel for blast-furnace operations will increase as time goes on and in order to continue to produce cheap iron and steel, some of the other costs must be lowered. Freight and labor rates probably can- not be reduced. The cost of producing iron ore cannot be reduced much below the present price. It therefore appears that the best opportunity for maintaining iron and steel prices at their present level in spite of in- creased costs of labor and raw materials is to use. less or cheaper raw materials. This, of course, contemplates an improvement in metallurgical processes all along the line and, as a matter of fact, we can confidently expect these improvements because scientific investigations will undoubtedly be even more productive in the future than they have been in the past.

IN last year's report on the progress of geophysics, the airborne magnetometer was the featured new development. At that time only a relatively small number of surveys had been made. During 1947, the airborne magnetometer was used in making many surveys and is again one of the high lights of the year in geophysics. This report is mainly concerned with geophysics as applied to the search for minerals exclusive of petroleum. In 194,5 and 1946, the use of the magnetic method reached a peak, partly because of an active period of prospecting brought on by an active mining market, particularly in Canada.

INTRODUCTION From the designer's view, the installation starts with the first definition of the orebody, and progresses through a long and complex development. The design is affected not only by the characteristics of the ore, but by all of the personalities and events of the project during its development. The following discussion attempts to touch on the most important aspects which define the context in which the designer must work in apply the do's and don'ts. That context is the basis of the viewpoint. WHAT CAN GO WRONG The Project Is Going Over Budget This is a common and serious concern to the plant designer. The Project Falls Behind Schedule Another common and disturbing condition with which the plant designer must cope. Some Equipment Fails to Perform This can be due to either faulty equipment or operating deficiencies. It can be the result of a wide variety of causes, but the designer will be an interested party in the search for the cause and the cure. The Plant Isn't Flexible Enough Sometimes a plant will handle some or even most of the ore satisfactorily but is unable to treat another type properly. This can be a significant problem. An example might be a case where low capacity of a cyclone feed pump makes it impossible to accompany an increase in grinding mill throughput with a corresponding increase in dilution water. This could lead to an increase in cyclone feed density, and a loss in product grade or a limit on the plant capacity. Spillage And Cleanup Are Excessive This is one of the most common and annoying defects in metallurgical plants, and one for which the designer can rarely delegate blame. Maintenance Is Excessive Another common complaint in new plants, and also one for which the dedesigner must accept most of the responsibility.
