THE use of color adds a new beauty, power, and versatility to metallography. This has been amply demonstrated in a number of public exhibits and on the walls of corporate, government, and university metallographic laboratories around the world. Indeed, in a number of cases, the color not only is of esthetic value but is scientifically essential to the competent examination of particular samples and systems. Optical strain analysis,' determination of true grain size in U-A1 alloys: phase identification in Nb-base alloys,3 analysis of transformation rates in heat-treated Nb-Zr alloys,4 measurement of solidification segregation in cast Nb-Zr alloys,' study of the intermediate phases in Nb/Sn diffusion couples,6 investigation of the oxidation kinetics at various surface orientations in single crystals,7'8 and a number of other research efforts9'10 would have been vastly more difficult without the extra clarity and distinction introduced by color—either the colors resulting from particular polarized light techniques or the interference colors obtained by oxidation. It is unfortunate that the beauty of colored micro-structures cannot be shared more widely, but the economics of publishing a technical magazine apparently prohibits color plates except under extraordinary circumstances. It is doubly unfortunate that no convenient, general method exists for communicating the information available in colored microstructures to the scientific community. True, in some instances the color changes observed are dramatic enough that direct black and white photography is adequate. In photoelastic stress analysis, several orders of interference fringes may be produced and it is frequently desirable to suppress the color effects (use monochromatic light) to simplify interpretation. On the other hand, relatively minute color variations may be readily detectable by eye, be of considerable assistance in interpreting a structure, and yet be enormously difficult to reduce to an unambiguous black and white print. In order to illustrate a possible compromise or solution to the above problems, we wish to show three black and white photographs of the same region of an Nb/Sn diffusion couple whose interpretation depends heavily upon use of color techniques. These micro-structures were obtained from a section through a rod consisting of commercial-purity niobium tubing filled with 99.995 pct Sn (melt-filled in 10"6 Torr vacuum). The composite rod, measuring 500 mm long, was bent into a hairpin shape and inserted into water-cooled copper grips in a vacuum high-temperature furnace. The rod was outgassed for 2 hr at a furnace temperature of 800°C and was further heated by self-resistance using a 2.2-kva ac power supply. The rod was raised to 1910°C over a 4+-hr period, held for 15 min, slow-cooled to 1500°C over a -hr period, and free-cooled to room temperature (all temperatures were measured with W5Re/W26Re thermocouple). Throughout the heat treatment the ambient pressure was kept below 8 x lo-' Torr. Metallographic preparation of the sample was completely conventional except that it was necessary to extend the grinding steps to remove damage in the brittle NbsSn phase introduced by sectioning. No satisfactory chemical or electrochemical etch has been found for these diffusion couples; of those which have been tried, any that attack the niobium-rich phases at all attack the tin-rich phases disastrously. However, the final polishing steps did produce a slight relief effect and this, coupled with anodizing, yielded excellent clarity in the microstructures for direct observation. The anodizing voltage was chosen to give maximum change in color per unit change in composition. In this case, indeed normally, this maximum sensitivity occurred in the blue-to-red color range. A progress report is presented on the development of a process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases. Catalytic oxidation of the sulfur dioxide in flue gases, with the production of recoverable sulfuric acid, has been demonstrated to be technically feasible. Problems associated with the process are discussed. The need for an inexpensive and efficient process for controlling sulfur dioxide emissions from utility plant stacks has been accentuated by the ever-increasing public demand for elimination of all man-made air pollutants. I would like to describe the results of an investigation of the development of such a process; more important, I would like to present a discussion of the problems associated with the process which remain to be solved. The research work on the BCR catalytic gas phase oxidation process has been jointly sponsored by the Association of Edison Illuminating Cos., Edison Electric Inst. and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., since 1958. However, work on SO2-pollution abatement was initiated by BCR in 1953. Tieman and Clymer,1 working with ozone and simulated flue gases, evaluated a gas phase oxidation process for removing SO2 from flue gases. Their experimental data indicated that the use of ozone to oxidize SO2 in flue gas concentrations, with subsequent recovery of H2SO4, did not appear to be economical due to the large ratio of ozone to sulfuric acid produced (2.6 to 1). The cost of the ozone would be 6 to 10 times the cost of sulfuric acid produced. As a result of the ozone study, work on a catalytic oxidation process was developed. The following reactions are the basis for the catalytic oxidation process Reaction [I] normally occurs in the combustion of sulfur-bearing fuels. At the high temperature found in the combustion chamber, 95% to 99% of the sulfur in the fuel is oxidized to SO2 and 1% to 5% is oxidized to SO3. The concentration of SO2 in the combustion gases depends on the combustion efficiency and the quantity of excess air used. A commonly used rule of thumb is 0.1 percent by volume SO2 in the flue gas for each 1% sulfur in the fuel. Reaction [2] proceeds at a wide range of temperatures. The rate of the reaction is rapid above l,000°F; however, the equilibrium conversion drops rapidly above this temperature. 2 Reaction [3] occurs rapidly to completion at temperatures below 400°F; above this temperature some SO3 exists in equilibrium with H2SO4. Complete dissociation of H2SO4 occurs above 650°F.3 The simplicity of the proposed process provided added incentive to the development and evaluation of the various component unit operations. The advantages of the process were considered to be as follows: 1) no raw materials were required, 2) the unit operations were not radically new; and 3) a salable product, sulfuric acid, would be produced. The successful development of the process was contingent upon the solution of several major problems: 1) The development of a catalyst which would provide high catalytic activity at reasonable conditions of gas flow and temperature without causing an unacceptable increase in pressure drop. 2) The development of a high temperature dust collection system to provide clean flue gases to the catalytic reactor. 3) The complete recovery of the sulfuric acid produced in the process; the effluent gas must contain less than 20 ppm by volume of sulfuric acid. As of this date, the complete solution to these problems has not been achieved. EXPERIMENTAL Catalyst Development: The use of platinum and vanadium catalysts for the production of sulfuric acid by the treatment of dry gases containing 5% to 20% by volume sulfur dioxide has been known for many years. INTRODUCTION The Mount Isa Mine is a large modern underground mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Two ore types are mined and treated separately. Currently silver-lead-zinc ore is mined at the rate of 2.6 million tonnes per annum and copper ore at the rate of 4.6 million tonnes per annum. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies are mined by sub level open stoping and cut and fill methods whilst all copper ore is extracted by various forms of sub level open stoping. The mining operations are highly mechanised and utilise diesel powered load-haul-dump units of various sizes, two and three boom face drilling jumbos, electric-hydraulic rotary-percussive ring drills, in-the-hole hammer drills, rotary blasthole drills, raiseborers, battery/trolley locomotives, a large fleet of rubber tyred service and supply vehicles plus light rockdrills mounted on airlegs, rail mounted overshot shovels and battery and diesel powered locomotives. All stoping production ore is extracted with diesel powered load-haul-dump units. The ore is tipped into orepasses which connect to the main rail haulage levels. On the haulage levels electric battery/trolley locomotives are used to pull rakes of bottom dump or side dump trucks which feed the ore into primary crushers. Following two stage crushing the ore is conveyed to the shaft and hoistod to surface in bottom dump skips. Each ore stream has its own rail transport system, crushing stations and hoisting shaft feeding separate concentrators. This paper will consider some aspects of the role of equipment and machinery in the growth of the mine, will discuss in some detail the machinery and equipment in use today and will conclude with a look at some possible developments in mining equipment for the future, with particular reference to the Mount Isa Mine. A summary of mining equipment in use at Mount Isa is given in the Appendix. THE PAST Silver-lead-zinc ore was discovered at Mount Isa in 1923 and within a very short time many small mines were being developed. However the rich surface ore traces did not continue and by 1928 Mount Isa Mines Limited had acquired sufficient leases to plan for a large scale mine to exploit the low grade orebodies. At this early stage it was recognised that the mine would need to adopt the most mechanised mining techniques then available in order to overcome its twin disadvantages of low graaes and extreme remoteness. The Company introduced bar mounted drifters and overshot shovels to replace hammer and tap and hand shovelling in development work and by 1930 headings were advancing at the rate of 30 metres per week. In keeping with the concept of mechanisation the early engineers designed the Man and Supply shaft with a very large, for those days, cage compartment measuring 3.8 m x 3.4 m. This shaft was the main means of access into the mine for 36 years until the K57 shaft (now R62 shaft) was commissioned in 1966. Man and Supply is still in regular use. Production commenced in 1931 at an annual rate of approximately 660 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore. The mine was mechanised to an extent which was previously unknown in Australia; whilst the concentrator, smelter and power house utilised the most modern and efficient equipment available. Even so, the mine was very near to closure on several occasions and did not return a dividend to its shareholders for many years. Production levels remained at or slightly below 660 000 tonnes until a separate copper ore streani and mill was commissioned in 1953, doubling the existing production levels. The first underground crushers were installed at this time. Production rates expanded in the years between 1953 and 1973. By 1960 production reached 2740 000 tonnes of ore. In 1965-66 total production was 3650 000 tonnes and in 1973 the production rate plateaued at the current level.

The fracture surfaces of specimens of titanium a1loys which exhibited susceptibility to subcritical crack growth in a wide variety of environments, including aqueous solutions, alcohols, hydrocarbon gases, carbm tetrachloride, and dry air, were examined. The dominant and characteristic fracture mode was cleavage. which became mixed with an increasing porportion of ductile fracture modes (dimples. and so forth) as the applied KI was increased. The cleavage plane in all the alloys was oriented at 15 deg from (0001) of the a phase. No indices could be assigned to the 15 deg cleavage Plane because of uncertainty as to which zone it belonged to. SLOW crack growth and delayed fracture take place in certain titanium alloys at stress intensity (KI) lower than the critical values for complete fracture (KIc) found in short-time tests for plane strain fracture toughness.' Such crack growth may take place in very dry air on sustained loading if the alloy contains a sufficient amount of hydrogen and if the stress intensity factor is higher than a threshold value designated KIH.2 Similarly, a number of environments such as water, alcohols, and hydrocarbons may cause slow crack growth provided the stress intensity factor exceeds the threshold value KISCC. In this paper it is intended to examine some fracto-graphic and crystallographic details of this subcritical crack propagation process as related to alloy composition, environment, and stress intensity. It has been previously reported that subcritical crack growth takes place in titanium alloys in aqueous environments by cleavage.2"6 The observations to be described here indicate that in the alloys investigated the mode of subcritical crack propagation is more dependent on the stress intensity during cracking than on the environment. The fracture mode is illustrated with photographs of the fracture surfaces at a wide range of magnifications. The crystallographic character of the cleavage mode is also presented and the results discussed. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The studies were made on four titanium alloys— Ti-8A1-1Mo-lV, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn, Ti-7Al-1Mo-lV, and Ti-0.350. Of these four alloys the first two were mill annealed and fine grained. The latter two were noncommercial and coarse grained, having been prepared for other experimental purposes. The crystallographic studies required a large-grain size. Consequently the fine-grained alloys were an- nealed in a vacuum at 1950°F and furnace cooled to produce samples for these studies. This treatment did not alter the microstructure significantly except for grain size. All the aluminum-containing alloys showed primary a with a network of ß-phase particles within the a grains; Figs. 1 and 2 show this microstructure for the specific case of fine-grained Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V. The cracks in the figures will be discussed later. Fractographic studies were made on all the alloys, but the electron fractographs displayed herein are from the Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V alloy in the fine-grained condition. Emphasis was placed on this commercial alloy because considerable information was available on the stress-corrosion cracking characteristics in a variety of environments. Sufficient supplementary studies of the alloy after the anneal to produce large grains were conducted to establish that the stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility and fractographic characteristics were not changed significantly. Thus it could be inferred that the crystallographic data obtained exclusively on large-grained specimens would apply also to fine-grained specimens. Fracture surfaces for study were obtained using precracked cantilever beam specimens loaded as described by Brown. The precracked section of a specimen was immersed in the environment of interest. Values of initial stress intensity factor Kli were chosen slightly higher than KISCC in order to obtain a fairly extensive region of slow crack growth. Fracture surfaces representative of a variety of stress intensity levels could then be examined because in the cantilever beam test KI increases as the crack propagates.

The harden ability of most steels can be predicted within 10 to I5 per cent provided the complete chemical composition is known, including "incidental" elements; and provided the as-quenched grain size is known; and provided, finally, that the composition and heating temperatures for hardening are such as to result in austenite free from carbide particles. In the method proposed herein, the steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its carbon content alone (the hardenability of a "pure steel" of the given carbon content, without any other elements), and this base hardenability is multiplied by a multiplying factor for each chemical element present. After multiplying all these together, the final product is the hardenability. Grain size may be taken into account either in the base hardenability or after the multiplication. Hardenability is stated in terms of "ideal critical diameter", namely, the diameter of bar, in inches, that will just harden all the way through (absence of un-hardened core) in an "ideal" quench, and the calculation may also be related to the Jominy test The data bring out certain features rather clearly. For example: i. It is quite useless to attempt to predict hardenability unless all elements, including "incidentals,,) are known; thus an "incidental,, chromium content of 0.20 per cent increases the hardenability by about 50 per cent. 2. The relative effectiveness of different alloys is sometimes unexpected; thus molybdenum when calculated in this way appears to be of the same order of effectiveness as manganese, rather than much more powerful, as would appear to be common experience; observe that an increase from no manaanese to 0.20 per cent Mn provides a multiplying factor of 1.67, and an increase from no molybdenum to 0.20 per cent Mo provides a factor of 1.63, an increase of over 60 per cent in each case. However, if to a steel containing 0.50 per cent Mn there is added "20 points of manganese," the factor is raised from 2.65 (for 0.50 per cent Mn) to 3.35 (for 0.70 per cent Mn), or an increase of only 26 per cent. Thus the fist small addition of an element has a much more powerful percentage effect than an equal further addition when some is already present, and in most cases the effect of molybdenum is considered in relation to a steel in which molybdenum is absent. 3. If two elements are equally effective, a greater hardenability will be obtained by using, for example, 0.5 per cent of each than by using I.o per cent of either of them alone. 4. Mankind's progress is measured in minerals. Man's emergence from prehistory is marked by passage through a Stone Age and a Bronze Age and into the present era, sometimes called the Iron Age or the Age of Metals. With the evolution of civilization and the development of a modem industrial economy, minerals become more and more important. Structures, roads, and machines are built largely of minerals; the energy to heat the structures and to drive the machines is mostly mineral; agricultural fertility is maintained by mineral fertilizers and water; and military strength is provided by fortresses, armaments, and munitions, largely of mineral origin. Thus in the material world, in the productivity of the economy, access to minerals has paramount importance. Every evidence indicates increasing dependence on minerals in the modem economy, particularly on the mineral fuels as energy sources to provide the power base for advancing industrialization. Both the total and the per capita consumption of almost every mineral is increasing in the industrialized nations. Moreover, nations with predominantly agrarian economies call themselves underdeveloped and universally strive to industrialize. Most mineral consumption trends in the more advanced economies have been greatly exceeding population growth-which itself has been advancing at an accelerating rate-and sometimes have surpassed the growth in real income. Some minerals have only recently been adopted or grown to importance in use. Titanium metal did not appear as a commercial product until 1948, and even coal seriously displaced wood as a source of heat less than two centuries ago. On the other hand, minerals have always played an important role in construction. The prehistoric megaliths that form the dolmens of Salisbury Plain are stone; the pyramids are andesite faced with limestone; and many other ancient structures are built of mineral materials. Primarily, this report presents the results of direct efficiency tests which were conducted on the 200-hp Coal-Pak, hot water generator, No. 3 unit, at the Otterbein College heating plant in Westerville, Ohio. Also included is a comparison of fuel consumption of the old plant with that of the new plant, a comparison of efficiencies obtained by the indirect method on a 300-hp Coal-Pak, and the cost of gas vs coal to show the savings effected by the latter. Tests were conducted with ten different bituminous coals selected by Mr. S. A. Frye, business manager at Otterbein College. The coals, of ten different suppliers, from four different states and eight different seams, represented competitive products economically available to the heating plant. The tests were conducted by the usual plant personnel which consisted of the plant superintendent and two assistants. No outside supervision of any kind was given during the tests. The tests were made from Dec. 13, 1960, through Mar. 4, 1961. During this period, 300.03 tons of coal were burned in the No. 3 unit. This tonnage represented 25.5 pct of the total coal requirements for the 1960-61 season. Operation during the period was typical for the comfort heat load which the plant supplies. Of the 78.12 operating days, the boiler was on bank or holdfire 14.31 days, or 18.32 pct of the time. The length of individual bank periods varied from 2 hr to three days. Run periods varied from about 2 hr to 7.26 days. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT AND HEATING EQUIPMENT The new Otterbein College heating plant, completed in the summer of 1957, is located in a 50x50 ft boiler room on the lower level of a combination maintenance building and heating plant. The building is situated away from the main college complex on a hillside, which allows for on-grade delivery of coal to the three bunkers. The bunkers are located directly above and connected with the individual stoker hoppers. Fig. 1 shows an in-plant view of the Coal-Pak installations. The No. 3, hot water, unit is at the extreme right. The heating plant consists of three 200-hp Coal-Paks. Unit No. 1 is operated at 4 psi and carries the steam heating load of 14,000 sq ft EDR (steam) installed in two buildings. Provision has been made to convert these buildings to hot water heating at some future date. Since the unit under maximum load conditions operates only at about 50 pct steaming capacity, a heat exchanger was installed to convert steam to hot water. Thus, during light loads in mild weather the unit can be employed more efficiently to supply both steam and hot water and eliminate the need for operating either of the two hot water units. Units No. 2 and No. 3 serve a hot water heating circuit for a large group of 21 buildings of the College. These boilers deliver hot water at temperatures up to 200°F to the various buildings through distribution lines in tunnels. The present calculated maximum heat loss for the College is 15.195 million Btu per hr. The Coal-Paks have individual design capacities of 6.700 million Btu per hr. Table I lists the design date for the Coal-Paks. The No. 3 unit was chosen as the test unit, primarily because of its bunker location at the far end of the delivery ramp. Because of this location any excess coal above bunker capacity could be conveniently stored and isolated from the adjoining bunkers. Each bunker has a capacity of 30 to 35 tons of coal. Laboratory tests conducted by the author. together with actual field experience in Canada. have indicated the magnitudc of some of the factors affecting ability of drilling mud to clean the hole. A correlation was observed between funnel viscosity and particle slip velocity. A relationship was also observed between the Bingham yield value of the mud and the particle .slip velocity. Laburatury tests indicated little change in slip velocity with funnel viscosities up to ahout 80 sec/qt or to yield values of aboul 15 lb/100 .sq ft. The lip velocity of the partic1e.s. studied vuried from 160 ft/min with water to neerly zero for high mud viscositie. lncreasing the mud density, creating laminar annular mud flow or rotating the drill pipe Mlay also improve the carrying capacity of mud. Field tests indicated that during fast upper-hole drilling, the rate of cutting removal must he sufficien to maintain the concentration of cuttings in the annulus at less than 5 percent by volume to prevernt balled-up drill collars and .stuck drill pipe. INTRODUCTION In the Mid-Continent area, hole cleaning during rotary drilling normally involves the use of low-density drilling muds with funnel viscosities varying from 26 to 80 sec/qt. However, frequently it is necessary to raise the mud viscosity in excess of 200 sec/qt to clean the hole. In addition, field experience has indicated that during very fast upper-hole drilling, annular mud velocities considerably in excess of the maximum slip velocity of the cuttings (normally considered to be 120 to 150 ft/min) are necessary to prevent balling the bit and drill collars. In view of these variations in mud properties and circulation rates necessary to clean the wellbore, a study of factors affecting hole cleaning and the relative magnitude of each was undertaken. The study was also prompted by the knowledge that a drilling mud with properties close to those of water would drill at rates several times that of a viscous mud. The carrying capacity of these near-water muds was not clearly understood, however, and many drillers were reluctant to use them. DISCUSSION EFFECT OF MUD PROPERTIES ON DRILLING RATE The effect of mud properties on drilling rate has been studied by a number of investigators. 1t is clear from their work that mud properties close to those of water will significantly improve drilling rate and bit life. If the water-type mud will also effectively clean the hole and cause no logging or formation impairment problems, the choice of an appropriate drilling fluid is clear—use water. Often, however, a water-type drilling fluid is not capable of effectively cleaning the hole. THEORY OF PARTICLE SETTLING The forces acting on a particle that is allowed to settle through a fluid quickly reach equilibrium, and the particle settles at some constant velocity referred to as the slip velocity. The slip velocity of any particle depends upon a number of factors such as density and viscosity of the fluid, the volume, specific gravity, shape and roughness of the particle, and upon the shape and area of the projected face of the particle at right angles to the direction of relative fluid solid movement. Brown' expressed this relationship for spheres in Newtonian fluids in the following equation. where v, = slip velocity D, — diameter of sphere p, = density of spheye p, = density of liquid /a = friction factor g = constant. The friction factor f, varies as the size, shape, surface roughness and slip velocity of the body, and as the density and viscosity of the fluid varies. WaddelV ound experimentally that where dynamic similarity exists. f, was a function of the particle Reynolds number (NRe) of the sphere (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 shows that f, for spheres varies from over 10 for low NKe numbers to 0.44 for N,,. over 600.

Metallic copper of purity equal to commercial electrolytic copper is deposited during the anodic dissolution of technically available white metal, Cu2S, in m acidic solution of' copper(II) sulfate as electrolyte and copper sheets as cathodes. The process may be applied on commercial scale since it has the advantage of by passing the converting and poling steps, decreasing pollution problems due to SO, and recovering the sulfur of the white metal in the elemental form. The anodic dissolution is believed to take place in three steps: The working conditions that lead to 98 pct cathodic current efficiency are: 30 gpl Cu2+ and 100 gpl H2SO4 in electrolyte, current density 1.0 amp per sq dm, and tetnperature of bath 40°C'. DURING the smelting of copper, nickel, lead, and zinc sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are produced. Because the release of this gas in the atmosphere causes pollution problems, many attempts were made in the past for its recovery either in liquified form or processed to sulfuric acid. Although these two forms of sulfur are the usual forms that are consumed by the chemical and metallurgical industries, their storage and transport usually raise economic problems. It was realized, long ago, that a process by which sulfur can be recovered directly in the elemental form would be most attractive. Elemental sulfur is easily stored and transported, and is readily converted to SO2, H2S, or H2SO4 when needed. Processes aimed to recover the metals from their sulfide ores, and at the same time by-product sulfur in the elemental form, were recently reviewed.' As early as 1882, Marchese2 patented a process in which a matte having the composition: Cu 15, Pb 14, Fe 41, and S 25 pct was electrolyzed. According to cohen3 the process was applied on a pilot scale by the Aktiengesellschaft fur Bergbau-, Blei-, und Zinkhiitten-betriebe at Stolberg, Rheinland, Germany. The process was unsuccessful, however, owing to the contamination of the electrolyte during electrolysis. Studies in this field were reported by Bernfeld4 and Egli.5 Borchers et a1.6-8 developed the process further by using white metal (Cu 78.2 pct, S 19.6 pct) instead of the matte, and a pilot plant was operated by the Mansfeldschen Kupferschiefer Co. at Eisleben, German~.~ It appears, however, that the process never went into commercial operation. Further studies in this direction were carried out by Russian workers.10-23 The International Nickel Co. of Canada erected a pilot plant at Port Colborne in 1951 to apply the process to nickel matte which is essentially pure nickel sulfide."'- 26 Full-scale plant went into operation at the Thompson Refinery in Manitoba in 1964.27 In this method nickel sulfide matte is melted and cast into anodes analyzing 76 pct Ni and 20 pct S with small amounts of copper, cobalt, and iron. These anodes are then electrolyzed in an aqueous solution of NiS04 at pH 4. Further work on this method was reported in the literature.28-31 In this paper, experiments on the anodic dissolution of white metal in aqueous copper sulfate solution are reported. EXPERIMENTAL White metal, Table I, obtained from The Anaconda Co., was cast in form of anodes 10 by 7.5 by 1 cm, Fig. 1. The anodes are mechanically strong and do not break easily; when polished they gave a shiny gray metallic appearance. From the chemical composition shown in Table I, it can be seen that the atomic ratio Cu:S corresponds approximately to the formula CU2.06S. The copper in excess to the formula Cu2S is most probably present as a separate phase since metallic copper could be seen under the microscope, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of white metal which matches fairly well with that of reagent-grade Cu2S.

WHY should I, a geologist, be coming before you to talk about finding ore? Certainly, the great discoveries of the past have not been made by geologists, but by men of very different tastes and training. If, in the year 1800, the course of ore discovery could have been foreseen, there would have been no reason to put it into the hands of geologists or other men of technical preparation. It was not geologists but explorers, Indian fighters, prospectors, manual laborers, and hardy financiers, who initiated the American mining industry. Then why this association of geological technique with ore finding? Why this feeling that the way to find ore is to apply to the problem what we call geo- logical principles? Well, to put it broadly, the old method has run out on us. It no longer works. Or, to put it another way, the cost of finding ore by the old method has mounted so high that one old district after another has become, practically speaking, dead, and various other old districts that are still going apparently at full strength are actually beginning to limp, and, with the cost of discovery mounting yearly, to fear, more than they will acknowledge, that the end is approaching.

IN a recent paper1 it was shown that small additions of magnesium, copper, and oxygen decrease the stacking fault probability in plastically deformed silver. Correlation of :X-ray data with measurements of the twinning frequency and metallographic observation of slip lines indicated that this effect may be due to an increase in the relative stacking fault energy. It is the purpose of the present note to report experiments on these alloys of known stacking fault probability that relate to the stacking fault contribution to electron scattering in silver. There has been a considerable amount of disagreement in the literature concerning the contribution of dislocations to electrical resistivity in metals. Calculations relating to the scattering of conduction electrons by the dislocation core, its strain fields, and related effects have been made by several authors.2-5 In addition, experimental work on Cu,3,6-10 Ni,11 and Ni-Co alloys1:! has shown that dislocations in those materials exert an anomalously large effect on resistivity, this effect being related to the presence of extended dislocations. The problem of the scattering due to the stacking fault region between partial dislocations has been treated theoretically using several different procedures.13-'0 The results of these calculations show a wide range of predicted values, from rather large to completely negligible, due to the models and the approximations involved. Almost all of this work has been applied to the specific problem of scattering in copper. The more complete theoretical treatments depend rather critically. on the shape of the Fermi surfaces and the effective mass parameters. The scattering from stacking faults might therefore be expected to vary significantly from one metal to another. Unfortunately, sufficiently accurate information is not available .which would allow one to have any confidence in a theoretical prediction of the scattering in the case of silver. Resistivity measurements were made on small wire specimens of vacuum melted high purity silver and several dilute alloys. These measurements were made at approximately 20°C, with great care being given to temperature measurement and corrections. At such temperatures phonon scattering is significantly greater than imperfection scattering. However, the experimental technique was such that measurements on similarly treated samples were reproducible to better than 2.4 X 10-9 ohm-cm, which was satisfactory for this work. Values of the stacking fault probability and the increase in resistivity after severe plastic deformation are given in Table I. The increases in resistivity resulting from plastic deformation agree quite well with previous work on silver.14,21-26 In addition, it has been previously found that interetitials and vacancies in silver anneal out well below room temperature, so that the residual imperfection scattering in these experiments could be expected to be primarily associated with dislocations;. It is seen from the data in Table I that large changes in stacking fault probability are accompanied by differences in resistivity due to imperfection scattering of only a few percent. If the scattering of conduction electrons by extended dislocations is primarily due to the area of the stacking fault region independent of the stacking fault energy, and not the core and strain fields associated with partial dislocations, the resistivity increase should be proportional to the product of the dislocation density and the stacking fault width, as is the stacking fault probability. Therefore, the imperfection scattering caused by plastic deformation of the alloys should be considerably smaller than that found in the pure silver. Since this was not observed, these results sugegest the possibility that stacking faults do not themselves contribute appreciably to the electrical resistivity of silver deformed at room temperature. An alternative explanation of these observations is that the scattering by the stacking fault is roughly proportional to the stacking fault energy, rather than being determined by the total area of such faults. Thermodynamic information on the solubility of hydrogen in exothermic metals is limited. Thus, the overall solubility decreased as the temperature rose, which suggests the heat of solution of hydrogen in the metal is negative; yet the terminal solubility in the metal phase increased, which suggests an endothermic reaction. A thermodynamic analysis, therefore, was made of the several equilibria involved when hydrogen dissolved in the metal. Equations were derived expressing the solubility, terminal solubility, and decomposition pressures of hydrogen in terms of the heat, entropy, and free energy of solution of hydrogen in the given phase. The relations between the thermodynamic functions for the a-zirconium and 8-hydride phase were developed. The thermodynamic quantities were determined experimentally by the measurement of the decomposition pressures over a broad composition and temperature range. Two new methods of analyzing the experimental data were developed for determination of the terminal solubility. STUDIES', ' of the impact strength of zirconium at room temperature indicated that small quantities of hydrogen, of the order of 10 parts per million, embrittles the metal. Micrographic' and X-ray diffraction' studies showed this embrittlement to result from the precipitation of a second phase upon slow cooling. These studies suggested that the terminal solubility of hydrogen in the metal phase increased with increase of temperature. This behavior appeared to contradict the effect of temperature on exothermic hydrogen occluders such as zirconium. For these metals, the solubility of hydrogen should decrease with increase of temperature. Before these facts could be understood, a thorough analysis of the several equilibria was essential. It was the purpose of this paper to consider the several equilibria involved when hydrogen was reacted with zirconium from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. Since the overall solubility of hydrogen in the metal has been considered by a number of workers, it was proposed to study the composition range 0 to 6 atomic pct H in detail. Literature Schwartz and Mallett' determined the terminal solubilities of hydrogen in the metallic phase from diffusion studies. They extrapolated concentration-penetration curves to the boundary between the solid solution phase and the hydride phase at the surface. Their results showed values of 2.6 atomic pct at 400°C and 5.2 atomic pct at 500°C. Extrapolations of the data to room temperature suggested very low values for the terminal solubilities. This study confirmed the hydrogen embrittlement results and indicated that the terminal solubilities increased as the temperature was raised. The solution of hydrogen in zirconium over the complete concentration range was studied by Hall, Martin, and Rees3 and by others. The results showed that hydrogen was absorbed up to a maximum composition of 66 atomic pct or ZrH This composition represented the t-hydride phase. The maximum amount of hydrogen absorbed increased with pressure and decreased with temperature. Due to this temperature behavior, zirconium was classed as an exothermic occluder." In 1930 Hägg studied the crystal structures of the Zr-H alloys over a broad composition range. Four hydride phases were found. However, the range of homogeneity of the several phases was not studied. Gulbransen and Andrew" recently studied the phase diagram of this system by X-ray diffraction methods and by a thermodynamic method based on decomposition pressure measurements. The results showed that only two hydride phases existed for low temperatures, the 6 and the .-phases of Hagg.' Both phases had broad regions of homogeneity. The lower limit of the two-phase region of a and d-phases suggested a terminal solubility of 4 atomic pct at 500°C. This value was in agreement with the results of Schwartz and Mallett.' The kinetics of the reduction of cupric salts in aqueous solution by molecular hydrogen to metallic copper are described. The rate of reduction appears to be homogeneously determined and shows a marked inverse dependence on the hydrogen-ion concentration. Precipitation of copper is more rapid and complete in sulfate than in per-chlorate solution. A mechanism is proposed which accounts for this behavior. IN recent years a number of important hydro-metallurgical processes have been developed in which metallic salts in aqueous solution are reduced by gaseous hydrogen, usually at elevated temperatures and pressures, and thereby precipitated either in metallic form (e.g. Ni, Co, Cu) or as an oxide or salt of lower valence (e.g. VO, and VA).1 ; In connection with applications such as these, most of which involve heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, recent demonstrations"-" that salts of certain metals, e.g., Cu", Ag' , Hg" , and Hg,+ can activate molecular hydrogen homogeneously and thus catalyze hydrogenation reactions in aqueous solution, are of considerable interest. For example, cupric salts catalyze the otherwise slow homogeneous reduction of dichromate and ceric salts by hydrogen, i.e. Cr,O; + 3HL. + 8H1 ? 2Cr'- -- 7H,O [1] 2Ce ' ! H.. ? 2Ce" | 2H . [2] In perchloric-acid solution, where Cu" is not appreciably complexed, the kinetics have been found" " to be of the form -d [H,] _- k,[HJ [CU"]' dt -LCu+' l+ (k ,/k,) [H] [3] where, K = 1x10"' exp [—26,600/RT] 1, mole-' min-' ... [4] and (k ,/k,) - 0.25 at 110°C. This kinetic behavior suggests that the reaction proceeds by a mechanism involving the following sequence of steps kt Cu" +H1CuH' 4-HA [51 k., CUH + CU" ? + 2Cu f H' [GI 6Cu'+ Cr,07 + 14H'+ 2Cr- (¦ 7H,O + 6Cu" ['i] fast The catalytic activities of the undissociated cupric-sulphate and cupric-acetate complexes are somewhat greater (by factors of 6.5 and 120, respectively) than that of the simple hydrated Cu" ion.'" These considerations suggest that, in contrast to the other hydrometallurgical hydrogenation reactions, referred to previously, reduction of cupric salts in aqueous solutions by molecular hydrogen, should proceed homogeneously, and in the absence of an extraneous catalyst. This has already been demonstrated" for acetate-buffered solutions where the product of the reaction is a precipitate of cuprous oxide (Cu,O). In the present paper, an investigation of the reduction of cupric salts in perchloric-acid and sulphuric-acid solutions, leading to the precipitation of metallic copper, is described. Some results for the sulphate system, which is of considerable hydrometallurgical interest, have been reported previously by Ipatieff",' " and by Schaufel-berger' but these do not give a quantitative account, of the kinetics and mechanism of the reaction. Experimental The reduction experiments were conducted in the 1-gal, titanium-lined autoclave described in connection with earlier related investigations," " and using a similar procedure. The solutions were made up by dissolving known amounts of CP grade Cu(ClO,), and HC10, (or CuSO, and HISO,) in dis-tilled water. While in the autoclave, the solution was stirred and maintained at a constant temperature (±loc) and under a constant partial pressure of hydrogen gas. It was ascertained that the agitation (provided by two 3-in., four-bladed stirrers, rotating at 900 rpm) was adequate so that at no time was the rate of reaction limited by solution of hydrogen. During each experiment, samples of the solution were withdrawn periodically, allowed to cool, and the concentration of copper remaining in solution was then determined electrolytically. Some Cu' is formed during the reaction, but undergoes disproportionation when the solution is cooled to room temperature. For purposes of kinetic calcula-

Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Australia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are beginning to experience where industry no longer 'calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a 'high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a 'distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas-of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to eliminate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

PROBABLY the most critical and difficult period in an engineer's career is that between the completion of his college work and his attainment of professional recognition and accepted status in the industrial world. Upon leaving school the young graduate breaks his immediate ties with his educational institution and in a sense finds himself adrift. At this time in his life a society like our Institute has both the responsibility and the privilege of meeting a vitally important need in his professional life. Some of these young men are Student Associates, in the year after graduation, and some are Junior Members, but all need advice and assistance. In some respects this situation will be accentuated by the war. Not only will thousands of young engineers be mustered out of military service but the process we describe generally as industrial reconversion will make necessary many readjustments in personnel. About two years ago the Institute recognized the opportunity of helping the younger member to help himself by appointing a new standing committee to be known as the Committee on Professional Development of Junior Engineers. Herbert Hoover is Honorary Chairman and it is my privilege to serve as Chairman. The name of the Committee is not entirely satisfactory but it expresses the general objective. The present article is in the nature of a progress report of the work of this Committee.

It is my observation of events, not only in our own Institute, but also in several sister societies, that too long a tenure of office by the Secretary inevitably leads to a situation which is not good either for him or for the society. Such a discussion would require the spinning of a web of words too long for patience. Yet ,a general statement of the underlying plan of the 1936 Act, so far as it affects dividend policies, is perhaps useful.

HERBERT M. WILSON, Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion).-Permit me to endorse the author's conclusions and their form of presentation as ,being, in my judgment, the last word 'on the subject of lights for the illumination of coal mines. I also feel that the open-flame oil lamp has outlived its usefulness, and that it should go, in the interests not only of safety but of efficiency. Where an open-flame lamp can be used with safety in non-gaseous mines, the acetylene light adds materially to efficiency by its better illumination, and to safety for the numerous reasons given by Mr. Chance. The latter, however, lays chief stress on the value of the acetylene because of its non-fouling and non-obscuring effect on the atmosphere. Another important advantage over any other form of illumination is the clear, bright light projected at the point where the workman may look for danger. The better illumination materially safeguards the worker against obstacles over which he may stumble when traveling, and against dangers from falls of roof or of coal, weakness in timbering, and similar conditions. The acetylene lamp, where it may be used with safety, has advantages even over the present electric cap lamp, in that it gives a higher luminosity; and when the miner comes to learn its signals, as he will in time, just as he learns those given by the open-flame or the safety lamp, he will find that the acetylene lamp is a fair detector not only of methane but of carbon dioxide, as clearly shown by Mr. Chance. The only, serious objection, raised against the use of carbide lamps. has been recently in Pennsylvania, due to the belief of the State Mine Inspection Department that it endangered miners working on pillar work, or other places where carbon dioxide might accumulate, or where there is lack of sufficient ventilation, and because it was believed that the indications of the carbide lamp would not give the miner sufficient warning. On this point Mr. Chance has clearly shown the fallacies of the objections. I may add that for those unable to detect carbon dioxide with the acetylene lamp, the maximum of protection would be afforded by using an open oil lamp or a flame safety lamp in such places; or, because the miner might not watch his oil light, a better, protection still would be offered by a sufficient number of daily inspections of such working places by a fire boss or other official, with flame safety lamp.
