A graphical method of analyzing the data obtained from shallow earth-resistivity depth tests is presented. The method is based upon empirical results and has no theoretical basis. The usual apparent resistivity-electrode spacing curve is used together with a cumulative resistivity-electrode spacing curve plotted on the same sheet. The greatly reduced scale required for plotting the cumulative values of resistivity together with the effect of the summation of the individual resistivity values serves to minimize the effect of purely local surface anomalies and inadvertent errors of measurement. The point of intersection of tangents or straight lines drawn to intersect at zones of maximum curvature in the cumulative curve indicates the depth to the underlying material. Numerous figures are presented in which data from published reports and from recent field studies are analyzed and the results compared with actual depths established by borings or with depth values obtained by the use of theoretical methods of analysis. Smoothly rounded curves of apparent resistivity such as are often obtained in the field, and which have been a serious drawback to attempts to analyze the data empirically heretofore, appear to be susceptible to rather accurate analysis by the method described. The method is best suited to analyses involving shallow two-layer formations. It has been applied successfully, however, in analyzing the data obtained from tests made over shallow three-layer formations. As with most empirical methods, its chief advantage is its simplicity and ease of application. There have been published many papers that discuss the interpretation of data obtained from earth-resistivity tests when using the four-terminal method of electrode spacing developed by Wenner.' The majority of these have dealt with theoretical analyses for two-layer and three-layer formations. Some sets of "master curves" have been presented for use in analyzing field data to determine the depth to the first and possibly the second horizon below the earth's surface. Although practically all of these theoretical methods of analysis have appeared to have particular merit and some have been used successfully in practice, they have been found to be of little value where the local conditions surrounding the test failed to conform to those assumed in the theory. In certain fields, particularly in civil engineering, relatively shallow explorations are often involved and geophysical methods of test must compete with the direct methods of exploration ordinarily used. Only when it can be demonstrated that geophysical methods of test can materially reduce the time and cost of a given exploration project will the civil engineer abandon direct methods in favor of the interpretations of geophysical exploration data. Empirical methods of analyzing earth-resistivity data have been used in many instances in the past. Magnesium, it is now generally realized, differs in some important aspects from most other structural metals, not excepting even its close neighbors, the aluminum-base alloys. This is particularly true with respect to the effects of elevated temperatures on the two light metals when in the molten state. Aluminum, 0' the one hand, should not be raised above its melting point any higher than is absolutely necessary if one is to avoid danger of gas absorption and a tendency toward grain growth in the resultant casting.' Magnesium alloys, in sharp contrast, actually benefit by being heated to temperatures considerably above their melting point, It is a commonly accepted practice to establish the desired fine grain in the industrial magnesium alloys of the aluminum-hearing group by raising the temperature of the melt after the refining treatment to some 250°C (482°F.) above the melting range. To recall briefly the typical practice for magnesium alloys, the molten metal is refined by fluxing at about 730°C. (I350°F.), and after the melt has been covered with a suitable flux, the temperature is raised to between 870°C. (I600°F.) and 930°C. (1700°F.). It is then cooled as quickly as possible to the casting temperature. This superheating, as it is called, results in a fine-grained cast metal structure which has superior mechanical properties, enhanced amenability to 'solution heat-treatment, and better machinability than cast metal that has not been superheated. The minimum temperature of superheating varies to some extent with the composition of the alloys to be treated and usually increases with the percentage of magnesium in alloys containing the same constituent metals.' It should be noted that the grain-refining effect of superheating is markedly apparent only in connection with the alloys containing aluminum as an alloying Constituent—the binary alloy containing 1.5 per cent manganese, for example, is not refined in grain to any noticeable extent by a superheating effort. While the phenomenon of superheating is well known in the magnesium industry, the mechanism of the process has remained a mystery During the superheating cycle something occurs that forces a fine grain upon the solidifying metal. The process has been controlled in an empirical manner, and occasionally, especially on large-scale melts, and for no apparent cause, no grain refinement is obtained from a superheating treatment. Only a few papers of importance have been published on the subject. Of these, one of the most helpful is the paper by Achenbach, Nipper and Piwowarski,3 which gives considerable data concerning the effect of superheating on various properties such as fluidity, shrinkage and hot crack

THE removal of moisture from coal has been a coal-preparation problem ever since the first wet-washing preparation plant was placed in operation. Today, when most of the coal produced in the United States is wetted at the working face when mined, or is cleaned by wet methods, the removal of moisture is a necessity for any one or a combination of the following reasons; (1) to avoid freezing difficulties during shipment, (2) to increase the B.t.u. content, (3) to effect savings in freight costs, and (4) to so improve the coal that it may be used for specific purposes-for instance, in the production of briquettes or the production of metallurgical coke-or so that it can be treated by dry cleaning methods. In general, the amount of water retained by coal particles varies with the size-consist of the coal. Fine coal has a larger surface area per unit weight than does coarse coal, so its capacity for retaining moisture is proportionately greater. The removal of moisture from coarse coal is relatively easy, while the removal of water from minus 10-mesh coal or finer is a major problem, usually requiring an individual solution at each preparation plant. As a result, a multitude of methods and a variety of equipment have been designed to solve both general and specific moisture-removal problems. Definitions In order that misunderstanding may be eliminated insofar as possible, it is necessary to define the terms to be used. The moisture content of any given increment of wet, washed coal is made up of two parts, inherent and surface moisture. Inherent moisture has been defined in various ways and as yet no standard definition has been agreed upon. However, in general, it is considered as the moisture that is present in the coal in the bed. The important point to remember is that coal with any amount of inherent moisture, whether 2 or 20 per cent, will appear dry if there is no surface moisture. Also important is the fact that inherent moisture can be removed, in part, by air drying at atmospheric temperatures. Surface moisture is that attached to the surface of the coal particles or that retained in cracks and fissures other than capillary openings in the coal substance. Creep of copper under 75 to 1.50 kg per sq cm stresses at temperatures near the melting point was found to he a complex reaction controlled by three mechanisms acting in parallel. In order of appearance with decreasing temperature, the auerage activation energies, Qc , are 168, 79, and 24 kcal per mole. Stress dependence of the minimum creep rate was found to he an exponential for the two high-Qc processes and a power law for the low-Qc, process. Transition of control occurs from one mechanism to another. The relative transition temperature depends upon the applied stress, and the range oiler which the transition occurs depends upon the difference in the activation energies of the mechanisms. The creep behavior at high temperature is explained by the climb of dislocations through thermally or mechanically formed jogs, CREEP in pure fcc metals at temperatures in excess of one half the absolute melting point is normally controlled by dislocation c1imb.1,2 A climb model which seems applicable, according to an extensive analysis of data,3 was derived by Weert-man.4 This model assumes jog-saturated dislocations and predicts an activation energy, Qc, nearly equal to that for self-diffusion, USd. Although the requirement of jog saturation is restrictive, agreement between theory and experiment seems adequate. Many other theoretical treatments, including an early model by Mott,5 include detailed consideration of jog formation as an initial requirement for climb. These models predict activation energies for creep which differ from those of self-diffusion. Seeger6,7 postulates an observed activation energy related to the stacking-fault energy. Thus, Usd <Qc<5Usd + Uj where Uj is the jog-formation energy. Seeger incorporated qualitatively the influence of the relative numbers of thermal and athermal jogs. Expanding this concept, Shoeck8 explicitly states a function based on formation mode and relative numbers of vacancies: e r ci exp {-uf/k T} exp {-Um/k T} [ 1 ] where Uf and Um are energies of vacancy formation and migration, respectively. The concentration of jogs, Cj, depends upon the manner of jog production. For intersection jogs, Cj is not sensitive E. R. GILBERT, Junior Member AIME, formerly with De- to temperature; for thermal jogs, Cj is proportional to exp {—Uj /k T}. Schoeck regards each mode as a distinct mechanism; therefore, the mechanisms may act together.299 The diversity predicted by theory, surprisingly, has not been substantiated by experimental results. A significant investigation must include the extremes in stacking-fault energy. Extensive creep studies of aluminum10 and nickel,11,12 high stacking-fault energy metals, have been made. Comparable studies on a low stacking-fault energy metal, such as copper, have not. It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of the creep of copper under conditions which favor thermal jogs. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical compression creep specimens (0.240 in. in diameter by 0.400 in. long) were machined from cold-drawn rods of electrolytic tough-pitch copper containing 0.0007 Mg, 0.002 Fe, 0.001 Ni, 0.0005 Ag, Cd < 0.005, and Pb < 0.005 wt pct impurities. Undetected spectrographically was a nominal 0.04 wt pct 0, which occurs as a Cu2O constituent distributed discontinuously at grain boundaries. Vacuum annealing at 900°C for 15 min produced a stable 0.03-mm average grain diameter. Testing was carried out using apparatus similar to that described by sherby,13 modified by enclosing platens and a push rod in a vacuum cylinder. Normally this arrangement resulted in pressures less than 10 Only a slight surface tarnish, less than 0.0005 in. in thickness, occurred during the test. The applied stress, corrected for atmospheric pressure, was maintained within 2 pct of the desired true stress by the addition of lead shot at fixed strain increments. Creep strain was measured with dial gages as a relative displacement of the upper and lower platens; accuracy of measurement was 0.0001 in. Two creep-test methods were used, the differential or cyclic temperature14 and the isothermal, to obtain creep data at stress levels of 150, 100, and 75 kg per sq cm over the temperature range of 620° to 1032°C. Minimum creep rates were used from both test methods; this was considered proper because comparable temperature tests or cycling to the same temperature gave the same creep rate, within experimental error. The cold vacuum test chamber, with the unstressed specimen in place, was heated to temperature by placing a preheated furnace over the chamber. Temperature equilibrium was attained within 30 min. The investigations of Wymanl have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunily to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydrogen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxygen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxidizing anneal, but beyond this the mechanism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subsequently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves be reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the subscale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as SiO2.Cu2O, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been concluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or individually under more or less predictable conditions. Effect OF Precipitated Cuprous Oxide and Dissolved Oxygen The literature provides no definite proof that oxygen in solid solution in copper can confer susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement; indeed, the research of Leiter2 seemed to indicate the opposite—that to produce the effect, cuprous oxide must be present in massive form and in a more or less continuous network along the grain boundaries. To test this point, pure copper has been annealed in hydrogen under conditions designed to ensure the presence in various samples of: (I) precipitated cuprous oxide, (2) dissolved oxygen only, and (3) no oxygen in any form. Very pure copper" said to contain no oxygen and no spectro-scopically detectable traces of any other element (that is, no individual detectable impurity in quantity greater than 0.0001 per cent) was used. Strips of this material cold.-rolled 75 per cent to 1/8 in. in thickness were subjected to the following treatments, the results of which are noted:

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to longer travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation may be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways may contribute to formation. This study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott&apos;s Ozark Lead Co. to identify causes of the problem.

This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. FOREWORD THE problem of concentrating the disseminated lead ore of southeast Missouri is extremely simple. The economic mineral is galena and the gangue is dolomite. The ore assays from 4 to .6 per cent. lead, 80 per cent. of which is recovered in a 70 per cent. concentrate.. The ore is crushed through 10 mm. and sized on 2 mm.; the oversize is jigged, while the undersize is tabled, and the slime treated by flotation. The district is the largest lead producer in the world, the output of metallic lead for the year 1915 being 183,906 tons. Over 20,000 tons of ore a day is being treated. The management of the different properties is progressive and always open to suggestion. The fact; however, must not be lost sight of, that the problem in the district is peculiar, as the average ore contains but 80 to 120 lb. of a metal normally selling at about 4c. per lb. The low price of the metal limits the treatment system to one of low cost. An elaborate treatment is neither logical nor advisable. An engineer first visiting the district may consider that the method of treatment could be improved

THE previous determinations of the solvus of tin in solid lead disagree with one another by as much as 40°C or almost 10 at. pct. Even determinations that appear to be careful differ considerably in both the solubility and its temperature coefficient. Recent kinetic workl -3 on the rate of precipitation of tin from lead-tin alloys and thermodynamic work4 on the heat of solution of tin in lead have given some insight into the time necessary to reach equilibrium in this system. As this time is longer than that used in almost all previous determinations of the solvus, these determinations are questionable. Since the interpretation of recent kinetic results requires accurate values of the equilibrium solubility the present work was undertaken. DISCUSSION OF PREVIOUS RESULTS The methods used in previous studies may be placed into three classes: 1) Several alloys covering a range of compositions are allowed to reach "equilibrium" at a certain temperature.5-7 Some property, such as the X-ray lattice parameter of the lead-rich phase or the re- sistivity of the alloy, is then measured as a function of composition. The solubility limit for that temperature is taken to be that composition at which a discontinuity in the property occurs. However, the recent kinetic work has shown that tin precipitates in two stages. The first stage is rapid but leaves the lead still supersaturated. The second stage is very slow, and it seems from the equilibration times quoted by the investigators of the solvus that the end of the first stage of precipitation was usually mistaken for equilibrium. This is especially true at temperatures below 100°C where the first reaction is still quite rapid (from minutes to months), but where the second stage is so slow that very long holding times are required to reach equilibrium. Alternatively micrographic work8 on several alloys of different compositions seems to have given good results if done carefully. 2) The beginning of precipitation in a homogenized alloy is measured as it cools slowly8-10. Since reactions in solids undercool easily, such determinations will always give too low a temperature for the solvus. 3) Some property of an alloy is measured as a function of temperature while the alloy is above the solvus.5,9,11 The range of temperature can usually be extended slightly into the two phase region. Then the alloy is precipitated at a much lower temperature and slowly reheated. The solvus is taken to be the lowest temperature where the property of the reheated alloy is equal to that previously determined for the homogeneous alloy. Usually one also expects a discontinuity at the solvus in the temperature variation of the property for the reheated alloy. The difficulty in this method is the sluggishness of the dissolution process, and this method may give too high a solvus temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The phase boundary or solvus temperature was determined by a modification of method 3 for a series of chemically analyzed high-purity alloys, ranging from 5.1 to 26.4 at. pct Sn. The resistance, as a function of temperature, of a sample of homogenized alloy (which could easily be undercooled) was compared with the equilibrium resistance which that alloy sample attained after precipitation at room temperature followed by long isothermal anneals at various temperatures. Before each anneal the sample was rehomogenized and reprecipitated. The solvus temperature could be located to within 1°C as the intersection of the resistance vs temperature curves for the homogenized and equilibrium alloys. No attempt was made to locate the phase boundary more accurately since the limiting factor was the precision with which the alloys could be analyzed. This precision was ±0.1 wt pct Sn and corresponds to an error of 1 deg in temperature. This use of isothermal anneals differs from some of the previous investigations in which method 3 was used with baths of slowly rising temperatures. DURING the past several years of diamond drilling in Washington County, Mo., the St. Joseph Lead Co. has discovered a concentration of commercial lead-zinc ore at four different points within an area of 36 square miles. The largest and to date the most promising group of these orebodies is located in the Indian Creek area. It was considered to be of sufficient value to warrant development. The Indian Creek area is in the center of the northern half of Washington County, 11 miles northwest of Potosi, Mo., the county seat. The location is readily accessible from Potosi by car or truck over the all-weather Missouri State Highway No. 114. The topography is one of rolling relief, varying from an elevation of 700 ft above sea level on Mineral Fork and Indian Creek to a maximum of 1176 ft at High Point Tower. It is divided in equal halves between the drainage to Mineral Fork and to Indian Creek. The shaft site at 1060 elevation is on the divide between the two drainage areas. The Indian Creek side is rough and heavily wooded, with only a few cultivated clearings. The slopes to Mineral Fork are more gentle and rounded, with much of the area cleared for farm land. Most of the surface is covered with Potosi and Eminence formations, which show little evidence of any structure. Ore structure was worked out by extensive diamond core drilling, with holes varying in depth from about 700 to 1300 ft. As of Oct. 1, 1950, 218 prospect holes had been drilled within the 36-square mile area. The ore is disseminated galena with considerable accompanying sphalerite in the Bonne Terre forma-tion in the shape of irregular blanket-type deposits. The main controlling structural feature of the outlined mineral zone is a buried pre-Cambrian rhy-olite-porphyry ridge extending partly through the Bonne Terre formation, which laps against the por phyry and also covers it. The mineralized zone parallels and forms an irregular halo around the porphyry ridge and is concentrated in the Bonne Terre formation where the La Motte sandstone is cut out by the porphyry ridge. This is a very common mineral occurrence in the southeastern Missouri lead belt district. The La Motte sandstone, which normally underlies the Bonne Terre formation, is thus cut out entirely. In this area the Bonne Terre is usually about 275 to 320 ft thick, the La Motte varying in thickness from zero up to 400 ft. Commercial concentrations of ore are indicated at several places, the most notable being at the shaft site where an orebody at least 4000 ft long with widths of 500 to 600 ft has been outlined. The total thickness of mineralized rock reaches 150 ft in some holes, although total ore thickness runs from 8 ft to about 60 ft, often in more than one layer. Preliminary Planning Ore reserves as outlined lend themselves to open-stope mining with trackless haulage and mobile loading machines and drilling equipment. This type of equipment has proved to be very efficient during recent years in the company&apos;s lead belt operations. After a study of bids for shaft sinking and an estimation of comparative costs, it was decided that the shaft would be sunk by St. Joseph Lead Co. personnel using company equipment. Since the plant site is about 26 miles from the company&apos;s nearest lead belt operations, it was necessary to plan a complete surface plant, including mill, shops, office, change room, and warehousing facilities. Immediately following the filing of an application for a certificate of necessity, a headframe was selected for which detailed drawings were already available. The order was placed for fabrication so that it could be delivered and erected in time to serve for sinking the shaft. This eliminated the expense of a temporary headframe. The formal descnption of the decay of an isolated scratch can be written in terms of an appropriate Fourier integral. With the application of certain approximations, this description leads to the second-moment analysis developed by King and Mullins. It is shown that the second-moment analysis does not adequately describe the behavior of a decaying, isolated scratch, and that it is difficult to obtain internally consistent values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,,from this analysis. This inconsistency arises from contributions of higher-order moments to the decay process. Two new analytical methods, based on the Fourier integval representation of a scratch profile, have been developed for determining values of D, from the decay kinetics of isolated scratches. In the profile-matching method, a given initial profile is resolved into its Fourier components, the components are allowed to decay exponentially over an annealing time interval, At, and finally they are synthesized to form a decayed profile. The predicted profile is adjusted to fit the experimental profile by varying only the parameter, D,At; the contribution from volume diffusion is directly taken into account and the integrals involved in the Fourier analysis are evaluated by numerical integration on an electronic computer. In the kinetic method, the widths, W, of a series of predicted profiles are determined for various volume-diffusion contributions, and the results are plotted in the form W vs DSAt. For a fixed ratio of surface to volume diffusivities, R, these plots are linear; the slope of the lines increases as R decreases. A simi-lar analysis can be performed on the depths of the predicted profiles. In this case, plots of (l/df3 vs D,At are found to be nonlinear. The proper value of Ds is found by superimposing the data for the experimental widths and depths on Plots of this kind and adjusting Ds until a fit is obtained with the line having the appropriate value oj R. An analysis of the slopes of these plots for R —= (surface diffusion only) reveals that they do not give the correct value, 2276, for width tf second-moment standard profile. This finding allows one to modify the second-moment analysis in such a way as to obtain internally consistent values of Ds. ThERE are several processes, involving a flow of matter along a surface, due to gradients in curvature of the surface, that may be used to determine the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds. These processes are commonly known as 1) thermal grooving, 2) single and 3) multiple scratch decay, 4) blunting of field-emitter tips, and 5) sintering. In this series of papers, the first three of these processes are examined in detail in an attempt to subject the phenomenological theories governing these processes to a critical test and, furthermore, to make a critical comparison of the values of D, obtained from these techniques. Although the thermal grooving technique has been established&apos;&apos; as a reliable method for determining D, , this has not been the case for the process of scratch flattening. Mullins and coworkers374 have proposed phenomenological laws governing the growth of the width and the decay of the amplitude of an isolated scratch, but only in one study5 has the width-growth law been supported by experimental evidence. In paper I of this series detailed experimental evidence is presented that points up the deficiencies of the second-moment analysis; the origins of these deficiencies are also discussed. Following this development, some new analytical procedures, based on representing the scratch profile by Fourier integrals, are presented as a means of obtaining reliable values of D, from the kinetics of the scratch-flattening process. Further applications of the Fourier integral approach are reported in papers 11&apos; and 111,~ where the method has been useful in interpreting the anisotropy of flattening rates of isolated scratches (paper 11) and in describing the multiple scratch decay process (paper 111). TEE purpose of this paper-is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possible the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. PURPOSE OF DEVELOPMENT It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal, therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elements (maximum), 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the con- version was successfully made.

DEAR SIR: It is now nearly three years since my first report to you on the subject of steel rails was written. That report, as you will remember, dealt principally with the question of the relation between the chemical composition and physical properties of steel rails end their power to resist crushing and fracture in actual service. Other matters were referred to or touched upon in that report, but the main question was, Why do some rails crush or break in service while others do not? Yon will doubtless remember that the principal conclusion arrived at was, that the softer rails are less liable to Crush or break in service than the hard ones. Or, in other words, so far as conclusions could be drawn from the chemical analysis and physical test of 25 samples of steel rails which had actually been in service, these conclusions were that those rails which have the smaller amounts of carbon, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese are less liable to crush or break in service than those which have larger amounts of these elements. Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as near term and Potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers and blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.

IN the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

SINCE the discussion On steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results Obtained by different chemists. To any One having the least acquaintance with chemistry., it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application&apos; of chemistry to steel-rail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it Occurred to me, two. years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my. own, and engage One of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus Obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in Order to carry on the, operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as was found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.
