THE mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts. The latter are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various types are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in. the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and enable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to have them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

The relative partial molar enthalpies of gold and tin in liquid Au-Sn alloys have been measured from Xsn = 0.474 to 0.510 at 696°K, slightly above the melting point of solid AuSn. Within an average precision of 6 cal per g-atom, the data are represented by two smooth curves, which satisfy the Gibbs-Duhem relationship and which do not show any anomalous behavior in the range of composition studied. The results give no support to the hypothesis that atomic associations in the equiatomic liquid alloy resemble those in solid AuSu. LITTLE has been firmly established as to the nature of atomic distribution in liquid metallic phases. A favored hypothesis assumes the existence of atomic groupings in the liquid phase which are similar to those in solid phases occurring at lower temperatures. Beginning with this hypothesis, it is often possible to adjust the values of certain parameters (such as degree of association) so that approximate agreement is achieved with certain features of the X-ray diffraction pattern of the liquid, even though many other possible structures might satisfy the data equally well. Thus, in this manner, the structure of liquid tin has been described as a dispersion of fragments of gray tin in a matrix of metallic tin.1 Four X-ray diffraction studies2"5 have been made of the liquid alloy of composition AuSn at temperatures slightly above the melting point of the solid. Each investigator concluded, on somewhat different grounds, that the liquid consisted to a large extent of arrays of atoms similar to the solid, with admixture of more disordered arrays. Solid AuSn has the nickel arsenide crystal structure: each tin atom has six nearest neighbors, all gold atoms; and each gold atom has six tin and two gold atoms as nearest neighbors. It remains highly ordered to the melting point. The liquid alloy has a large exothermic (?H700° K = -2700 cal per g-atom6) enthalpy of formation, favoring ordering and making the hypothetical molecular association not unreasonable. The possible existence of such solidlike arrays, or of a high degree of order that occurs preferentially at a specific composition in a liquid alloy, might also be revealed by thermodynamic behavior somewhat analogous to that in highly ordered solid alloy phases. The latter often exist over wide composition ranges, within which the highest degree of order occurs at the ideal composition for which the atomic fractions are equal to the fractions of sites which are "right" for each kind of atom. On departing from the ideal composition, the excess atoms occupy "wrong" positions, raising the internal energy and making it progressively easier for additional atoms to occupy "wrong" positions. Thus, on either side of the ideal composition, there should be a pronounced rise in the entropy and enthalpy, which would be shown particularly by the change in the relative partial molar enthalpies, ?Hi, since they depend strongly on d?H/dx. In the one case where accurate measurements have been made, the solid AuCu ordered phase, the structure becomes much less ordered as the composition deviates from the ideal, and relative partial molar enthalpies change sharply as shown by the data6 given in Table I. DIGGING of veins I have written of, and the timbering of shafts, tunnels, drifts, and other excavations, and the art of surveying. I will now speak first of all, of the iron tools with which veins and rocks are broken, then of the buckets into which the lumps of earth, rock, metal, and other excavated materials are thrown, in order that they may be drawn, conveyed, or carried out. Also, I will speak of the water vessels and drains, then of the machines of different kinds,1 and lastly of the maladies of miners. And while all these matters are being described accurately, many methods of work will be explained. There are certain iron tools which the miners designate by names of their own, and besides these, there are wedges, iron blocks, iron plates, hammers, crowbars, pikes, picks, hoes, and shovels. Of those which are especially referred to as " iron tools " there are four varieties, which are different from one another in length or thickness, but not in shape, for the upper end of all of them is broad and square, so that it can be struck by the

FEW people realize the tremendously important part that Saline and Pulaski Counties in central Arkansas have played in the winning of the war. The present favorable war situation might have been very different if we had not had the bauxite produced during the past two years from these two small areas, a total of about 15 square miles. As a general statement, it can be said that the Arkansas bauxite deposits are, individually, relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, therefore, compared with coal or iron-ore or open-pit copper deposits, relatively ill adapted to a rapid and drastic expansion in output. A few years ago it would have seemed an impossibility for these two counties to produce over six million long dry tons of bauxite in one year. However, with the cooperation of the operators, that is what happened in 1943, when the state of Arkansas achieved the seemingly impossible with a production of 6,020,684 1 long tons (dried equivalent) of bauxite ore during the calendar year, compared with an average annual production of 323,725 2 tons in the period 1931 to 1941. It became apparent early in the year 1941 that the United States soon might be drawn into the war, and, therefore, that an immediate study of the domestic metal situation was necessary. Aluminum is by far the most important metal used in the manufacture of aircraft and many other implements of war and it was evident that there would have to be a tremendous increase in the domestic production of bauxite, which is practically the only present source of this metal. As more than 95 per cent of the known bauxite reserves of the United States was in Arkansas, careful preliminary studies were made in that state by representatives of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey and the War Production Board in the summer of 1941. Reserves in other states also Were studied. The result of these studies was a recommendation by the War Production Board that mining in the bauxite-producing areas of Arkansas be geared for maximum production, in order to supply sufficient ore for this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the war needs of Canada as well. The annual goal of eight million long tons (dry Weight) set for Arkansas by the War Production Board Was exceeded in 1943, when in August the output reached a rate equivalent to more than 8,300,000 long tons, dry basis. Because of the comparatively small tonnage of bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. Drilling began in May 1942 but owing to delay in delivery of drills, and trucks upon which the drills were mounted, the program did not get into peak operation until early in 1943. By means of electrokinetic measurements, the surface properties of the aluminosilicate polymorphs (sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite) and also mullite have been found to depend on the ratio of A10 bonds to SiO bonds in the surface. The Al-toSi ratio in the surface is dependent upon the crystal lographic properties of the mineral, which in turn determine coordination numbers of A1 and of Si, cleavage characteristics, and density of the various solids. Mullite with a greater bulk Al-toSi ratio has the highest zpc of the aluminosilicates. By treatment in dilute acids or by cycling between acidic and basic solutions, alumina is selectively dissolved from the surface of these orthosilicates. This shifts the apparent zpc to lower pH values as the fraction of SiO groups in the surface increases. Thus, surface properties can be altered by procedures that alter the A l-to-Si ratio in the surface. Flotation of these aluminosilicates results from electrostatic interaction of the collector ions with the mineral surfaces. As a result, flotation response shifts in accord with any shift in apparent zpc by pretreatment. Separation of minerals by flotation is based on differences in the physicochemical properties of their surfaces.'-3 For many minerals, adsorption of flotation collectors results from their functioning as counter ions in the electrical double layer at solid-water interface. In such systems, separation depends on differences in the zero point of charge (zpc) of the various minerals. The zpc is defined as the concentration of potential determining ions in solution at which the surface is uncharged. The potential determining ions for inorganic oxide-water interfaces are hydrogen and hydroxyl.4,5 This work is concerned with the effects of crystal structure, composition, and surface preparation on the surface properties and flotation behavior of aluminosilicates. Differences resulting from crystal structure were studied by measuring electrokinetic potentials and determining the flotation behavior of three different aluminosilicate materials having the same chemical composition (Al2O3 SiO2), namely andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. Furthermore, the effect of the Al2O3-to-SiO2 ratio on flotation behavior and surface properties was investigated by including synthetic mullite, 3A12O3 .2SiO2. Gaudin and co-workers 6,7 have clearly shown how crystal structure determines the native floatability of certain minerals. Those solids in which the surface is comprised mainly of broken residual bonds possess naturally hydrophobic surfaces. It was found by Bakakin8 that for a number of oxidized lead minerals, differences in floatability were due to the distance of Pb atom from the surface. Only limited work has been done on relating electrical properties of surfaces to crystal structure and composition. Healy et. a1.9 found that the zero points of charge of various manganese dioxides ranged from about pH 1.5 to pH 7.5, and these differences in the zpc's were interpreted in terms of the atomic packing in the various crystals. The research presented here clearly shows that crystal structure and chemical composition do affect the surface properties of aluminosilicates and, in addition, that these effects can be altered by changing conditions under which the surfaces are prepared. CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE ALUMINOSILICATES Sillimanite, andalusite, and kyanite are composed of regionally metamorphosed rocks differing mainly in degree of metamorphism. All three minerals have the same chemical composition, Al2O3 - SiO2, of which sillimanite is the high temperature polymorph and kyanite and andalusite the lower temperature polymorphs. Andalusite and sillimanite crystallize in the orthorhombic system while kyanite crystallizes in the triclinic system. The structure of these three minerals is essentially chains of aluminum-oxygen octahedra linked laterally by silicon and aluminum. The arrangement of these chains in the three minerals is shown in Fig. 1.l4

Problems encountered in beneficiating mineral raw materials become increasingly difficult as there is a shift to lower grade and more complex raw materials, and because of the economic need to strive for ever higher recoveries, higher grade products, and lower processing costs. Methods of attacking the many problems should include not only the familiar chemical and physical tests and equipment, but such techniques as X-ray analysis, infra-red analysis, differential thermal analysis, and the use of electron and X-ray microscopes. Many people in the mineral-treating field are unfamiliar with these newer methods and techniques. The differential thermal analysis method, in particular, does not seem to be very well known, even though it offers interesting possibilities in the study of many ore treatment problems.

IN the Chihuahua district of Mexico the first smelting was that inaugurated by the early Spaniards for the production of silver bullion. The ores treated were high in silver and lead. Silver-lead bullion was first produced and the lead then cupelled to waste, with the slag produced running from 5 to 10 per cent in lead and about 25 to 40 per cent silica. The ore was mined by peon labor, often being carried out of the mine on the backs of the men, and then transported by burros. Furnaces were of primitive construction, adobe or rock being used in the earlier period and some iron later when it became available. Blast was originally supplied by bellows manually operated. Such smelting was carried on to a greater or lesser extent until the latter part of the last century, and so extensive was it that many hundred thousand tons of leady slag remained to be treated in modern furnaces. In 1908 a smelter was placed in operation at Chihuahua by the American Smelting & Refining Co. At that time the ore was practically all oxidized and by a little selection, self-fluxing mixtures could be made, but with an average lead content usually under 10 per cent and sometimes as low as 7 per cent. The bullion produced would carry from 150 to 300 oz. silver per ton. The slag made approximated 30 per cent SiO2, 42 per cent FeO, 21 per cent CaO, and perhaps 3 per cent Zn. The ores varied from hard, coarse material which was passed through a crusher, to a considerable quantity of fines which had to be smelted as it came, as crushing the coarse was the only preparation for smelting.

Allan Gibb, Mount Perry, Queensland, Australia (communication to the Secretary):—In drawing conclusions from his observations, Mr. Van Liew has apparently overlooked the reduction in weight that takes place in the content of the converter. The percentage-compositions of the matte, etc., are not directly comparable for determining the rate of elimination of the impurities; and, in the absence of exact weights (which in such an operation could not be obtained), it is necessary to determine the relation between the impurities and the copper with which they are combined at various stages, in order to get data that are comparable. Owing to a portion of the copper being removed in the slag, etc., the weight of copper in the converter is not a fixed quantity, but.it is sufficiently approximate to permit very reasonable comparison. The analytical data given by Mr. Van Liew, reduced to this basis (a ratio between the impurities and the copper with which they are combined), are shown in the table on page 958. From this table it will be evident that Mr. Van Liea's conclusions as to the source of heat at digerent stages are not quite correct. During the first 10 minutes, no iron is scorified, the heat being derived from the oxidation of the sulphur, of which 7 per cent. of the total is removed in this time. Prom

IN THE metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alka-line or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture-and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have, successfully introduced it in. the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation.. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its, application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. Naturally this would have been an exceedingly ambitious.

The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded hills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaceous or talcoid slates forming the walfs of and horses in the veins. Liquid surface tensions of copper and 18 Group IV-A to VIII transition metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cb, Ta, Mo, W, Re, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Fe, Ni. Co) have been measured by the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod sample. The drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. Application of necessary corrections enabled determination of surface tensions to k2 pct and agreement between methods to * 1 to 4 pct for all the metals studied. Evidence is presented that the liquid surface was well screened by metal vapor, suggesting negligible adsorption of gaseous impurities and that the surface tensions measured are characteristic of the metals involved. Correlations between liquid surface tension and melting point, molar volume, heat of vaporization, and atomic number are presented and discussed. Temperature coefficients of surface tension were calculated using Eötvös' law. SURFACE tension and interface energies of metals are the result of incomplete atomic coordination resulting in a force perpendicular to the boundary, tending to minimize its area. These energies are important in many phases of metallurgy, including microstructure, sintering, joining, electronic emission, and lubrication, which in turn affect many physical and mechanical properties of metals. Liquid surface tension refers to the interface between the liquid and its own vapor or nonreactive atmosphere, and is considered a physical property of the liquid. Since equilibrium shapes can be readily obtained with liquids, the units of surface tension (force per length) and interface energy (energy per area) are interchangeable. Thermo-dynamically, the surface tension ?LV is given by the change in free energy F with surface area A at constant pressure P, temperature T, and composition N: for commercially important refractory metals, vanadium, columbium, tantalum,13,14 molybdenum,14 and tungsten,l5 and none for the rare platinum-group metals and rhenium. Measuring the surface tensions of transition metals is difficult because of their high reactivity and melting points. Of the many techniques available,16-18 the pendant-drop 19-21 and drop-weight methods17,22 are considered superior because they can be modified to eliminate persistent sources of contamination such as supports and capillaries necessary in the popular sessile drop, capillary rise, and maximum-bubble-pressure techniques. The necessary modification is to melt a drop on the tip of a vertical rod, which provides support through a solid of the same composition.13,15 The object of the work was to study the surface-tension behavior of copper and transition metals, having reasonably low vapor pressures. Liquid surface tension of each pure metal was systematically determined by using a combination of the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod. Liquid drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, the metals studied were high purity and generally were obtained in rod form. The exceptions were titanium and zirconium, which were machined from crystal bars, and molybdenum (tot 11, osmium, and ruthenium, which were sintered and arc cast into rods. All the metals were ground or swaged to desired sizes between 1- and 7-mm diam, and centerless ground round and smooth to a finish better than 50 µ in., rms. Each rod was thoroughly cleaned with steel wool, degreased, acid etched, and dried. In a typical run, the rod was vertically clamped in a modified floating-zone electron-bombardment furnace designed after Calverley23 and Carlson.24 The specimen was outgassed and maintained positive at several kilovolts in a dynamic vacuum of 10-5 to 10-7 mm. The bottom end was enclosed by a tantalum pillbox and heated by electrons emitted from a hot concentric tungsten filament mounted on a movable bracket. The bombardment power was slowly raised until melting was observed. Power requirements ranged from 30 w for copper to 1300 w for 4-mm tungsten. In spite of the influx of operators into the Gulf Coast anxious to retrieve their depleted production in other fields, and in spite of very active application of the most scientific geophysical methods to locate new producing areas, the results have been very discouraging and the year has failed to produce more than the average results for a Gulf Coast year. During the year seven new oil fields, some of which are still of very little importance, and one new gas area have been discovered. These fields are Tom Ball, Greta, Cleveland, Raisin and Garwood in Colorado County; Louise and Premont in Jim Wells County, and the new producing gas area near Ace in southern Polk County. During the year salt has been found for the first time at Carlos and Esperson. New producing areas have been developed on East Stratton Ridge, Hockley, Hull, Port Neches, near Pettus in Bee County, and on the O'Connor Ranch in Victoria County. The total production for the Gulf Coast for the year was 62,837,435 bbl., an increase of 18,589,000 bbl. over 1932. During the year, 1307 wells have been drilled of which 207 were wildcats, compared with 653 wells and 141 wildcats the previous year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 165,201 bbl. At present there are 3100 oil wells producing. The average production per well is 55.5 bbl. per day. The price of crude fluctuated considerably during the year, beginning at 80c per barrel and closing the year at $1.04 per barrel. Completion data for 1933 are as follows:

In their account of chromium, Roscoe and Schorlemmer (Treatise on Chemistry, London, 1879) state that "In 1762 Lehmann, in a letter to Buffon, de nova minerœ plumbi specie crystalline rubra, described a new mineral from Siberia, now termed crocoisite." In 1786 Lehmann analyzed it (Nicholson's Jour., Dee., 1798) and found that it contained chiefly lead, and that the " mineralizers " were arsenic and sulphur. It was next examined in 1189 by Macquart and Vauquelin, who stated that it contained an intimate mixture of iron, alumina, and lead peroxide. The account of their work was published over the name of Macquart. Vauquelin (Louis-Nicolas) was a Norman peasant, who had studied in the village school, and at the age of fourteen was a laboratory-boy in a pharmacy at Rouen. Later, he found his way to Paris, and in 1789 was assistant to Fourcroy, a pharmacist and a teacher of note. It was here that he met Macquart, with whom he did the work on Siberian red lead, and at this time his friend Cheradame taught him his Latin.

HAULAGE in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct,‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* STUDIES BY THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on. a test block.
