A photoguaplric method of measuring crack velocities has been applied to an examilzation of- the effect of hydrogen on the impact properties of zirconium. Results indicate that the crack in hydrided zirconit travels at about 26 m per sec whereas that in the uacuum -annealed is dependent on the speed of the hammer. RECENT work on the effect of hydrogen on zirconium reveals that when hydrided zirconium is tested in slow bending the crack producing failure can be unstable. The mode of fracture seems to involve the crack linking up broken hydrides by a ductile mechanism in the zirconium matrix.2" In order to compare the fracture of zirconium with that of other metals which show unstable crack propagation, notably steel, the rate of the crack spread must be known. As the methods previously used for measuring crack growth are either unsuitable for the present work5-'' or very costly," a simple technique has been devised in which the maximum crack velocity is derived from a series of crack position-time measurements. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental arrangement is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The flash unit12 was triggered when the Charpy hammer touched the specimen and the 6-psec flash of the lamp delayed by a preselected time interval in the range 100psec to 10 msec. The camera was left on open shutter during the test. From direct measurement on a calibrated photographic print, Fig. 2, the position of the crack and the specimen was found at a known time after impact and, from a series of such tests using an appropriate range of flash-delay times, the crack velocity was estimated. Preliminary experiments were carried out on mild steel above and below its transition temperature. Vacuum-annealed zirconium, and zirconium hydrided to 100 ppm H were then tested at 20" and 150°C. For comparison, Zr-2.6 pct Nb alloy (in the 0 + transformed /3 condition), vacuum-annealed or hydrided to 100 ppm H, was tested at 20 C. The chemical analyses of these materials are given in Table I. For the high-temperature tests a fine chromel-alumel thermocouple was spot-welded onto each specimen close to the notch. The test piece was heated up to 200°C to allow enough time for preparing the apparatus while the specimen cooled to the testing tem- perature. It was assumed that the specimen cooled uniformly. The accuracy of the flash-delay time was better than i2 pct i 5 psec. The crack length was taken as its maximum distance traveled normal to the length axis of the specimen. Errors in these measurements arise as a result of the uncertainty in the location of the crack tip and the difficulty in defining the exact position of the crack starting point. The latter was due to the bonding and large amounts of deformation at the hammer contact point, especially in the vacuum-annealed specimens tested at 150°C. The maximum error in the measurements was however estimated to be about 5 pct. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS From the trial experiments using mild steel above its transition temperature it can be seen from the plot of crack length against time after impact, Fig. 3. that a reasonable estimate of the maximum crack velocity at the surface of the specimen may be made. Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. INTRODUCTION Natural gas containing 25.65 per cent H2S and 4.75 pcr cent CO, is produced from the Pine Creek field, Alta. It is dehydrated at wellheads, gathered at 2.200 psig and transported 26 miles to the Windfall field where it is delivered to the inlet of injection compressors at 1,800 psig. The daily average volume of gas transported is 160 MMcf. The project is believed to be unique in its combination of percentage of hydrogen sulfide, operating pressure and transportation distance. This paper describes the project and presents details of some of the design features, corrosion control program and centralized automatic operational control. The Pine Creek field project is one phase of a joint operation of two fields—thc other being the Windfall field. The two fields lie about 30 miles north of Edson, Alta. and 20 miles west of Whitecourt, Alta., respectively, as shown on the map (Fig. 1). They are owned by the same interests and operated according to a plan for maximum economic recovery of products. The Windfall Leduc D-3 reservoir contains a rich condensate-bearing gas containing 15.5 per cent HIS. The gas from the Pine Creek field contains only very small quantities of butane and heavier products. The Windfall reservoir is being cycled to obtain maximum condensate recovery using gas from the Pine Creek field as the displacing fluid, while producing the residue sales gas for both fields from the Windfall field. The Pine Creek field development and gas-gathering facilities are shown on the map (Fig. 2). The producing formation is the Leduc D-3 reef at a depth of 11,300 ft. The original reservoir pressure was 4,590 psia at 7,400 ft subsea and the temperature is 245F. Eight wells are equippcd with dry desiccant dehydrators with the following capacity ratings: three at 35 MMcf/D; three at 20 MMcf/D; and two at 10 MMcf/D. WELLHEAD EQUIPMENT Dry desiccant dehydrators were designed to reduce the water content of the saturated wellhead stream to 2.5 lb of water/MMcf at 2,000 psig. This specification was necessary to prevent hydrates and corrosion forming in the pipeline which will operate at temperatures as low as 20F. A typical flow diagram is shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 4 is a photograph of one of the wellhead installations. Some of the design details given below are subject to modification in the field. The well-stream flowing temperatures range from 135 to 170F. Wellhead flowing pressures up to 3,200 psig are reduced to the dehydrator-operating pressure of about 2,100 psig by throttling through a pressure control valve. X HE recent investigation of Butler, McCabe, and paxton' on the vapor pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium with Mn-Fe alloys has been extended to include the iron-rich solutions and alloys in the two phase equilibrium region. The study of the phase equilibrium by Kurnakov and Troneva2 and the extensive reviews of the Mn-Fe system by Hansen,3 and Hellawe114 are not in agreement with regard to the location and extent of the equilibrium between the solid phases of fcc y and complex P in the temperature range above the eutectoid temperature of approximately 975Kwhere 0 decomposes to y and bcc a. An evaluation of the existing equilibrium data is confronted with the conflicting results presented by various investigators who used techniques requiring a quenching treatment to retain the high-temperature equilibrium or encountered temperature hysteresis during thermal analyses. The difficulty of suppressing the transformation of the manganese-rich concentrations of the y-solid solution during quenching has been well etablished.' To avoid this uncertainty the phase equilibrium was investigated at temperature by measuring the partial pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium

Grindability or resistance to fine comminution is the fundamental issue involved in the application and sizing of grinding mills. Over the years, many theories for determining the amount of energy required for size reduction to a specified fineness have been proposed. The first published theory, introduced by P. R. von Rittinger in 1867, stated that the energy required for crushing or grinding is proportional to the increase in surface area produced. The surface area of a ton of particles of diameter (d) is proportional to (1/d), therefore the work input per ton for particles of diameter (d) would be proportional to (1/d). The second significant theory is that of F. Kick published in 1885. Kick said that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. If (f) is the diameter of the feed particles and (p) is the diameter of the product particles, the work input relationship would be: [W =Ioq(f/p) 9] The "Third Theory" of F.C. Bond, introduced in 1951, states that the work required is proportional to the length of the new crack tips produced in particle breakage during crushing or grinding and equals work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. WITH the gradual exhaustion of the upper veins in the anthracite coal-fields, the problem of mining at greater depths acquires increasing importance and demands the consideration of a number of important factors, one of which is the greater earth-pressure and the consequent necessity of stronger support o for the roof. Under the pillar-and-chamber system, almost exclusively followed in the Northern anthracite-field, the highest economy in mining is generally secured by leaving, on first mining, pillars only sufficient to support safely the overlying strata. As to the necessary size of such pillars, the opinions of mining experts are widely divergent. In establishing the width of chambers and pillars, the thickness of vein and its depth below the surface have received little consideration. For. instance, it has been quite usual to work both overlying and underlying veins with the same width of chambers and pillars, when the lower vein was two and one-half times as thick, and twice as fits below the surface, as the upper. In view of the generally-accepted theory that the crushing-strength of coal-pillars of the same base-area becomes less with increased height, it is probable, in this instance at least, that the most economical mining has not been secured. This question of adequate pillar-support is economically less important down to about 800 ft. than at greater depths; and it is with reference to mining at these greater depths that the study of the subject here presented has been prompted. The necessity of leaving larger pillars, involving greater mining-costs per ton and also smaller yields per acre, is one of the troubles of deep working. AMONG mining men as well as in the popular mind the conviction has held sway that mining is pre-eminently a western industry. True it is that gold, silver, copper and other metals have made the States of California, Colorado, Montana, Utah. Nevada and Arizona famous. The prominence attained by these States as mineral producers is, however, not measured alone by the money value of the products of their mines. While the metals are without doubt indispensable in industry, the glamour of the precious metals, and the lure of copper, lead and zinc have given to their ore deposits a sentimental interest that often quite out-weighs their commercial importance. Today a great group of more commonplace minerals are finding a place in commerce and industry rivaling that of the metals, but there is little sentiment attached to them, and,. therefore, they attain relatively little publicity. This is the great group of the non-metallic minerals, exclusive of fuels and oils, including stone, sand and gravel, cement, lime, gypsum, asbestos, mica, phos-phate rock and many others. Almost unnoticed they have grown in production to almost unbelievable pro-portions. The estimated value of metal production for 1925 is given as $1,380,000,000, of the non-metals (ex-cluding fuels) $1,294,000,000. The non-metallic industries are not new, many of them date back almost to pre-historic times; but, as the greatest of them (on a tonnage basis) provides raw materials for the construction industries, it required the activities of the present age of construction to bring about their enormous development. Many of them enter manufacturing as well as con-struction. Non-metallic minerals constitute the back-bone of our great chemical industries. While construction and manufacture reach to all parts of the country their widest development has been in the great industrial centers of the eastern Seaboard and the middle West. Consequently the raw materials of mineral origin required for these great industries have attained a remarkable growth in the eastern half of the- United States. In compiling figures of mineral production for 1924, for which more complete data are available than for later years, the surprising fact is brought to light that the non-metallic mineral produc-tion alone of some of the eastern and middle-western States exceeds by a substantial margin the total min-eral production of some of the western States that have been classed as essentially mining States. Thus the non-metallic mineral production, exclusive of coal and petroleum, of the State of Ohio, was approximately $150,000,000; of Pennsylvania $175,000,000; and of New York $107,000,000. For the same year, 1924, the total mineral production of Utah was $84,357,000; of Montana $70,632,000; of Colorado $61,488,000; and of Nevada only $26,226,000. Even Minnesota, with its enormous iron ore production, reached only $107,845,-000, or a sum about equivalent to the non-metallic min-eral production of the State of New York.

WE as employees of these related companies, I am sure, are proud to be affiliated with them, and have great faith in the sagacity and fore- sightedness of our employers. Most of us here have been called into important positions in these organizations, and it should be our most earnest endeavor to sense and carry them out as if they were our very own. We have been asked to supervise and carry on a work over which our employers cannot personally watch. It has been well said that the most efficient organization is that which requires the least attention from its head. Because of the very nature and condition of our work, which separates us by many miles from our employers and makes it impossible for us to receive attention and instructions from the heads of our departments, save for occasional visits and correspondence, we are given a great opportunity to prove that we can be efficient workers without too much attention from the heads of our departments. There are few employees who cannot do their duty when it is laid before them in specific terms, and when their employers are always there to see that their plans are carried out. But the employee who is really giving efficient service sees his duty himself and willingly does it. '

THE determination of the question whether the Mayari and Moa mining-claims of the Spanish-American Iron Co. have been rightly denounced under the third section of the law of bases rests on the findings in the following questions of fact: 1. Is the mineral an iron-ore? 2. Is the iron-ore a bog iron-ore? 3. Is the iron-ore ocher? 4. If ocher is present, can it be mined separately and independently of the iron-ore ? 1. IS THE MINERAL AN IRON-ORE? Since the material is shown by a large number of analyses to contain from 41. to 50 per cent. of metallic iron and less than 0.02 per cent. of phosphorus, and since it has been and is being actually used on a commercial scale for the production of iron and steel, it must be classed as an iron-ore. 2. IS THE IRON-ORE A BOG IRON-ORE? Bog iron-ore has certain invariable characteristics of chemical composition, physical appearance, geological relations, and origin by which it can always be recognized with certainty. In chemical composition, it is the hydrated sesquioxide of iron, limonite, or a mixture of limonite and other closely-related iron hydrates. It never contains the anhydrous oxides-hematite or magnetite; is never magnetic, and never contains either nickel, chromium, or cobalt oxides. On the other hand, it is invariably high in phosphorus-content. In physical appearance and texture it is a yellow or reddish-brown amorphous spongy material, and always contains water-worn sand-grains, silt, clay, and plant-remains. Br far the greater number of the members of this Institute are men who are engaged in the strenuous work of the technical part of their profession, and find little time for the abstract scientific work which is less distinctly practical and pecuniarily emunerative. There is, however, a small but increasingly numerous class whose members devote themselves to broad geological problems which underlie the systematic development, and whose work, theoretically, ought to precede and form a basis of that of their more practical brethren. These are the so-called mining or economic geologists, who are, for the most part, connected with State or National geological surveys. From the character of their work, the life of these men necessarily follows rather different line's than that of most of their colleagues, and is not generally familiar to them. It seems admissible, therefore, that to the life of a prominent member of this class, who died during the past year, having literally sacrified his life to his work, a more extended notice should be given than the relatively small number of his contributions to the Transactions might seem to justify. George Romans Eldridge, son of Ellery and Sarah (Mathews) Eldridge, was born on Cape Cod at Yarmouth, Mass., Christmas day, 1854. His boyhood education in the public school at Yarmouth was followed by a six years' course in the Public Latin School at Boston, from which lie entered Harvard Uni¬versity in 1872, being graduated with the highest rank in his class in the natural sciences in 1876. During his college course he spent the summers of 1875-6 at Cumberland Gap, Ky., as volunteer aid to Prof. N. S. Shaler, who was then in charge of the State Geological Survey of Ken¬tucky. WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

MINE-DRAINAGE and the ever-increasing demand for water on the plains have within the past few years necessitated the driving of a great number of adits and tunnels, including many of considerable size and great length. In most instances, ex isting conditions have called for extreme rapidity of execution; and this necessity, coupled with the high altitudes at which most of the work has been carried on, excessive freight-rates, and difficulty -of access, has involved many complex and interesting problems. One of the most rapidly executed undertakings of this class is the Laramie tunnel, recently completed for the Laramie-Poudre Reservoirs & Irrigation Co. This tunnel is driven through Green ridge, a spur of the Continental Divide, which separates the Laramie river from the Cache-la-Poudre in Laramie county, Colo. Green ridge is extremely persistent, and further northward in Wyoming is known as Sherman hill, the highest point on the Union Pacific railway. At the point where the tunnel is driven, two opposing bends bring these streams within 2.5 miles of each other, with a difference in elevation of 500 ft. The rock exposed on the banks of the two rivers does not differ materially in hardness; and, without a geological study of the conditions involved, it would appear that the difference in the depth of erosion of the two streams is due principally to the greater volume of water at this point in the Cache-la-Poudre, which has a drainage-area above the tunnel-portal of 110 sq. miles, as against 30 sq. miles of natural drainage for the Laramie. To increase the water-supply at the tunnel, however, this latter amount has been augmented by two side collection-canals, which bring the available drainage-area up to 84 square miles. DREAMS do come true at times, although it is evidently better to believe in engineers than to "believe in fairies" if most dreams are to be translated into fact. It was a fine dream that David H. Moffat had when he projected a railway directly west from Denver; a dream of opening a new empire in northwestern Colorado, and of quickening transportation from the Middle West to the Pacific slope. But Moffat had been a miner and had become a banker. He knew that dreams, untranslated into works, benefit no one and pleasure only the dreamer, so he employed an engineer, H. A. Sumner, to study and plan the route to be followed by the rails. Previous main lines had run to the north, the Union Pacific, or the south, the Santa Fe. The Denver and Rio Grande, it is true, wriggled its way bravely across Colorado but, in order to reach a point 74 miles in an airline west of- Denver, travelled 281 miles following two canyons and crossing Tennessee Pass at 10,240 ft. Valuable as such a road is, it could never accomplish what Moffat had in mind. It was known that no low pass could be found directly west of Denver but up to 9000 ft. the topog-

Wherever hereafter I employ the terms "technical education," "engineer," "technologist," or similar expressions, these are intended to be understood as relating to the broad field of the sciences and arts applicable to the mineral industries. First, the usefulness of technical education to either the possessor of it or those to whom its services may be made available industrially depends primarily upon the quality of the education and the capabilities of the educated to put his talents to effective and constructive employment in his chosen field of applied science.

IN five years mineral wool has grown to a thirty-million-dollar industry from one whose output was valued, in 1933, at $1,700,000. Ten years ago, in 1928, there were only seven producing companies, with an annual output of but 50,000 tons. By 1936 fifty or more companies were producing half a million tons. The industry is still growing vigorously and will profit from the expected activity in building in 1339, for two-thirds of this material is used for building insulation and to assist in fire-retarding, in both new and old homes. It is as useful in the South, to protect against heat, as in the North, to keep out the cold, if one may speak nontechnically. It is a concomitant of air conditioning, that new addition to the American standard of living that began in theatres, department stores, and railroad dining cars, and is rapidly progressing down to small homes. Here, then, is an industry that is only beginning to have a present, and one with an almost certain important future; one that depends upon mining and the by-products of mining for all of its raw materials; one that every progressive mining man should know something about.

IntRoduction The new slime-concentrating plant at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, was put into operation during March, 1914. This plant, which has a capacity of 26,000,000 gal. of slime pulp carrying 2,500 tons of solid matter per day, consists of Dorr thickeners and Anaconda multiple-deck slime concentrators. A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation.
