Cable sheaths made from common lead have been used to protect underground cables since the beginning of the power-cable industry. Only within the last few years, however, has a systematic study of the production methods and of the causes of failures in cable sheathing been undertaken. Recent increases in the use and demands for service made upon power cables have emphasized the importance of high-quality cable sheaths. It was customary for the users to attribute the cause for their sheath failures to the lack of purity of the lead, but this contention has not been borne out by field and laboratory inspection of the sheaths. During the past two years the writers have had an opportunity to examine various types of sheaths that were removed from power cables after failure. These samples were obtained from various parts of the country and represent, it is supposed, the production of the principal cable manufacturers. Aside from corrosion, the common field difficulties can be classified either as mechanical or structural, as outlined below, and when structural irregularities are found they can all be attributed to manufacturing causes and in no way reflect the purity of the lead. The most important area of the so-called Keewatin rocks of northern Minnesota is that which runs westerly from Lake Saganaga, near the national boundary, and finally disappears beneath the drift (or has not been farther traced), in the neighborhood of Vermilion Lake. With this belt we have a general acquaintance, extending back some four years. During the past year we have had the opportunity of studying in considerable detail a small part of it, embracing an area of about 12 square miles on the south and east shores of Vermilion Lake. In this paper we desire to record our observations and conclusions, which seem to us important. II.—Literature. Outside the Minnesota Geological Survey, the list of the investigators who have studied the geology of the Vermilion Lake area is not long. Whittlesey, in 1876,* mentioned the occurrence, in the area about Vermilion Lake, of rocks resembling the Canadian Laurentian. Chester,? in 1884, described the iron-ore at Vermilion Lake as occurring in connection with jasper and quartzite, intimately bedded with the country-rock, chiefly sericite schist, and standing in a nearly vertical attitude. The Vermilion iron-bearing rocks, and those of the Mesabi range, he says, are of the same age.

The Atlantic City district encompasses several districts and has been previously called by different names, e.g., Atlantic gold district, Atlantic City-South Pass mining district, and Sweetwater mining district. The district is located in a terrane of folded and faulted early Precambrian metamorphic rocks which lies near the south end of the Wind River Range in Fremont County, Wyoming, Historically it is a gold district of little production, but today is an iron district of considerable importance. Gold was discovered in placer deposits about 1842 and in quartz-arsenopyrite veins about 1867, after which there occurred a mining boom lasting a few years. Minor, intermittent gold production from placers and lodes has continued to date, but the total production has probably not exceeded a few millions of dollars. Past lode mining was generally shallow ( in the oxidized zone), the deepest about 3 60 feet. The deeper, less oxidized and sulfide ores on the same lodes have not been explored. They appear to hold the only hope for future gold mining. Sedimentary iron-formation, similar to the Lake Superior taconite, occurs in the northern part of the district. Locally, where the ironformation is thickened by folds and faults, sufficient tonnages are present to be minable, as at Iron Mountain, where the U.S. Steel Corporation produces about 1.3 million tons of iron-ore pellets annually. Exploration of the iron deposits began in 1954, and the first ironore pellets were shipped to Provo, Utah in August 1962. Indicated reserves of iron-formation (about 30 per cent Fe) are reported to be about 300 million tons.

THE re-crystallization of metals has been the subject of much scientific investigation, some of which has resulted in a better understanding of this extremely important and interesting phenomenon. Unfortunately, while many have propounded theories of re-crystallization, but a few have presented experimental evidence as to how it takes place. If this can be determined the question, why re-crystallization occurs, may be answered more definitely. Re-crystallization in single phase metals consists of a complete rearrangement and re-sizing of the grains, of which the structure is composed, while the type of structure remains the same. That is to say, if the structure before re-crystallization is composed of a number of polyhedral grains of different shape and size, a particular spot after re-crystallization will be seen to consist of grains in no way different from the original except in size and shape. The re-crystallized grains may be smaller or larger, depending on the treatment received; and, while the re-crystallization may be brought about by means of heat treatment only in passing through a critical range, yet it is common knowledge that single phase metals subjected to cold working are possessed of a tendency toward re-crystallization, even if the heating does not reach critical range. The study of re-crystallization would, of course, be much easier if we had single crystals of any metal as the original material with which to study the phenomenon of re-crystallization, since it would permit the observation of structural changes at what amounts to enormous magnification, by changing the scale of the specimen. In metals of more normal grain size the crystal boundaries introduce complications, but the process, it may be assumed, is essentially the same. Such an opportunity

The derivative of the surface tension with orientation, ??/??, for copper has been measured over the entire unit triangle. This derivative or torque term was determined from the variation of the dihedral angles at the intersection of twin boundaries and free surfaces. High-temperature anneals in graphite with a hydrogen atmosphere gave torque terms of 0.097 at (111), 0.066 at (100), and 0.0257 at (110). A variation from -36oto +23oC in the dew Point of the H2 had no effect on these values, nor did a change from 99.98 to 99.999 pct Pure copper. The removal of graphite from the system decreased ??/?? slightly. Considering the surface near a low-index plane to be smooth except for occasional steps, the free-energy increment per cm of step is calculated, and it is shown that the observed variation of ??/?? is consistent with a random distribution of steps and an interaction energy between steps. Integration of ??/?? gave the relative values of y at (100), (110), and (111) as comPared to ymax: (Y111/Ymax) =0.974, (Y110/Ymax) =0.996, (y100/Ymax) = 0.983. The ratio of the surface tension of coherent twin boundaries to the surface tension of the free surface was found to be (yT/ys) = 0.027 * 0.011. In a crystalline solid the surface tension y (surface free energy per unit area) depends on the orientation of the surface relative to the crystallographic axes of the crystal. Measurements of this variation of y with surface orientation have been reported for metals only within the last few years. Consider the grain boundary groove shown in Fig. 1. Here the three surfaces are all normal to the plane of the paper, and each has a different surface tension, y1, y2, and y3. If the system is at equilibrium, the total surface free energy must remain unchanged for a slight vertical displacement of the intersection (points A, B, and C are kept fixed). THE results published in Professor Howe's paper 10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels 11 containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by' the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to -0.1 sec. for recording .time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12. The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5/8 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thereto-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by, platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

THE most common difficulty faced by an engineer or mine operator when opening a new property in a new field is the lack of roads and of cheap transportation. This one item often swings the balance of success or failure in starting a project. In Alaska, as elsewhere, such problems are more or less serious. In the boom days around the Valdez district, as well as in other parts of this territory, freighting was accom¬plished by dog teams or horses, or even by men that were willing to put their shoulders into harness, because there were virtually no roads. More important, there was only one time when supplies could be transported, and that was when there was suffi¬cient snow on the ground following a heavy wind. Then, and only then, could one depend on the snow to support horses and sleighs, and be sure that the gulleys, streams, and crevices in the glaciers were filled with snow to avoid pitfalls. Lead-zinc production in Canada accounted for 19% of the total value of metals and minerals produced in 1976, says Keith C. Hendrick, president of Noranda Sides Corp. Mine production of recoverable zinc w as 1. 158 million toils of 27.4% of free world production in 1976. Slab zinc pro¬duction was placed at 472,000 tons that year. Canadian mine production of recoverable lead was 247,000 tons or 10.6% of the free world production. Refined lead that year was at 177,000 tons.

THE experiments here described were made under my supervision while temporarily acting as head of the Department of Metallurgy at the Missouri School of Mines, at Rolla. The work was done by Messrs. W. E. Brown, W. C. Richards, and F. L. L. Wilson, and the description of the results forms a portion of a thesis presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science. These results are submitted because I have seen no description of the application of pot roasting to the treatment of a copper-concentrate. This work followed that already described in the discussion of the ' Lime-Roasting of a Galena-Concentrate,"' and was similarly occasioned by the lack of a furnace of the reverberatory type in which the copper-concentrates could be smelted. The material for the tests was a mixture of three lots available. The first consisted of 8-mm. jig-concentrates and the second of 0.5 mm. table-concentrates, from the San Juan district, Colo. Both contained pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. The third was a lot of copper-ore, found in the laboratory, which had been crushed through 8-mm. screen, and had at some previous time, before the laboratory roasting-furnace was torn down, received a partial roasting. The analyses of these ores are given in Table I. In order to determine the applicability of pot-roasting as to each lot of ore, and the effect of varying proportions of lime, six preliminary tests were made in a " size N " Battersea crucible, 9 in. high by 6 in. in diameter at top, with a 5/8 in. hole bored through the bottom. The crucible was set in the upturned elbow of a 2-in. pipe, the joint being luted with clay; and air was obtained from a receiver supplied by a compressor. The

WORLD production of the three major nonferrous metals, copper, lead, and zinc, in 1939 will aggregate about 6,050;000 tons, compared with the all-time peak of 6,237,944 tons in 1937, and the previous peak of 5,679,442 tons in 1929. The United States will furnish 30.9 per cent of the total compared with 30.4 per cent in 1937 and 41.3 per cent in 1929. Table 1 gives the details of the three metals.

INTRODUCTION Since the introduction of longwall coal mining systems, reliable predictions of roof support requirements at the face and the roof caveability in the gob area have been major contributors to the success of the longwall face by means of safety and face productivity. That is, the successful operation of a longwall is well-served by good regular caving of the gob. In recent times, with the advent of increased coal face mechanization and capital investment, the evaluation of the feasibility of longwall mining has become essential. In the United States, where a face unit for a face length of about 150 metres may cost around $6 million, a quantitative system that would assist in selecting the best equipment for the coal would prove extremely beneficial. There have been many such varied investigations in the past few years. A vast -amount of work has been invested principally by West Germany [3, 7, 8, 91 , Poland [I, 101 , United Kingdom [4, 5, lo], France [4], and South Africa [4]. It is the object of this paper to review this previous research work and give an outline that may be used as guidelines for long- wall evaluation. Essentially, for the initial design phase for a longwall system, account must be taken of the geometry of the coal panel, its position relative to the surface (depth), direction of the coal cleat system, faults and in-situ stresses and other neighboring workings in the same coal seam and other seams both above and below. The advance of the coal panel disturbs the stress field and in doing so creates an abutment zone around the face. At this stage the condition of homogeneity of the surrounding rock mass does not apply. The magnitude of the rock strata pressure may exceed the ultimate strength of the rocks and create zones of clastic, plastic and elastic material, the limits of which are difficult to determine. The collapse of the gob and resulting expansion of the displaced waste roof rock, create a statically undefined support complicating an already unclear rock structure. For example, it is often a point of debate whether, indeed, the vertical strata pressure develops to regain the original magnitude of virgin stress. Under these post-failure circumstances an analytical approach based on simplified and idealized assumptions can only be considered a very general approximation. Theoretical concepts, however, may be adequately supplemented by empirical methods that are based on numerous underground observations and surveys [3, 4, 7, 8]. These methods employ the use of rock indices that very handily correspond to the competence of the roof rock mass. Scale model work [3, 41 , using equivalent materials representing the surrounding rock mass within the coal seam zone, have given valuable qualitative and sometimes quantitative data in addressing the behaviour of the rock mass around longwall panels. To characterize the state of art of caveability predictioqthe principal concepts will be reviewed with special emphasis placed on practicality for the planning of longwall operation. It has been the general observation of the authors that many of the literature surveys published in English often neglect reference to other international mining literature. It is with this point in mind that an overall review has been written including mining concepts identified with the principal coal mining countries. THEORETICAL CONCEPTS Arching Theory For the development of this theory, assumption has been made that an extracted height, h, in a coal seam results in an extracted panel of width, w . Also, the coal seam is horizontal and the rock strata of both the roof and floor are homogeneous. The primary (virgin) stress distribution will change in the roof as well as the floor. SEVERAL improvements have been made in Granby smelting practice since the company abandoned the direct smelting of raw ore in the blast furnaces in June, 1927, in favor of sintered concentrate. These improvements have been made in several fields, but the most novel and outstanding change was the development of a process of concentrating most of the gold, and a somewhat smaller fraction of the silver present, in a small portion of the blister copper produced. The practice of making "copper bottoms" is usually associated with the reverberatory smelting of copper ores containing high percentages of impurities, or of copper matte high in precious metals. It has for its object, in the one case, the production of a major part of the copper relatively free from impurities and, in the other case, the production of a small per¬centage of the copper carrying the major part of the precious metals. Although the blister copper produced at the Anyox plant of the Granby company is remarkably free from deleterious impurities and normally contains no great amount of precious metals, certain economic considerations made it advisable to concentrate the existing precious metals into a relatively small percentage of the blister copper produced. The process devised took advantage of principles and reactions of the usual bottoms processes, but was carried out in the converters instead of in a reverberatory furnace.

CHICAGO in the last week of June fulfilled all its promises to the visiting engineers except one. This holds true with respect to the activities of the Regional Meeting of the A. I. M. E. in particular and of Engineers' Week in general. No one expected to find much of the beautiful in the outward aspects of the Fair-the Century of Progress Exposition, to be more formal; but they expected novelty, color, and startling lighting effects at night, and they were in no sense disappointed. It has been said that the architecture is a portent of the style of the buildings of the future; most who have seen the Fair hope that this forecast will prove inaccurate. As to the exhibits themselves, they are splendid. They are in keeping with the theme of the Exposition-a Century of Progress in science, in engineering, in the industries based upon them. No attempt will be made here even to suggest the exhibits that are most interesting. There are plenty for every one; and any member of the Institute who has the opportunity should by all means visit Chicago before the end of October.

INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this chapter is to present the diagnostic features (geologic, mineralogic, chemical, and physical) of the principal types of hypogene ore deposits recognized in current genetic classifications, and to classify the ore deposits of the western United States into those types. The genetic divisions used and the criteria determining them are essentially those followed by Lindgren in his Mineral Deposits. Deviations from Lindgren represent either changed conceptions since 1928 (the date of the third edition of Mineral Deposits) due to advance in knowledge or the inevitable differences of opinion between experts in active fields of investigation. Though nineteen economic geologists have been given free hand in presenting their particular topics, there are no fundamental departures in the chapter from the principles set forth by Lindgren. It would be entirely beyond the capacity of a single chapter to give a comprehensive geologic description of all the ore deposits of the western United States. Descriptions of individual deposits have been restricted to those features that are of most diagnostic genetic value. All of the more important deposits receive that much attention. Deposits of lesser economic importance and those inadequately known geologically are treated more briefly or merely cited under what seems to be their proper genetic assignment. The geographic limits of the descriptive matter are the Black Hills and the United States between the Rocky Mountains and the pacific Coast. Capacity of the chapter has made it necessary to impose these geographic limits.

EVERY forward step in civilization brings with it an increase in population and increasing demand for raw materials. Modern civilization, because of its industrial development, depends more and more for its well-being on ample supplies of raw materials; the higher the type of that civilization, the greater its dependence. No fact is more obvious than that the raw materials should be put to use with greatest prudence and efficiency. National life is not a matter of a decade or a century. Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. This has occurred in past centuries through misdirected governmental effort. Two eminent engineers have variously defined conservation as follows:

ARRANGEMENTS for the Annual Meeting of the Institute were well advanced at the end of December as the following program will show. Heretofore this has been printed separately, but its inclusion in the Annual Review issue of MINING AND METALLURGY will, it is hoped, make it more easily available for reference until the final program is issued, which will be distributed at the meeting. Added details will appear in the February issue. Last year's meeting drew a record crowd of over 2300 which should be exceeded this year. Early reservations at the headquarters hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, or any other convenient hotel are desirable, as are prompt reservations for the Annual Dinner. No one need worry about too much speechmaking this year, for the honors will be awarded and accepted in a few words instead of a few paragraphs, in seconds rather than minutes.

HIGH explosives, particularly nitroglycerin, have been used in torpedoes for the purpose of shooting oil and gas wells for more than 60 years. The early history of the oil industry in Pennsylvania is not clear as to who actually torpedoed the first well, although in 1865 the Roberts Torpedo Co. procured a patent covering the process. Gunpowder was first used, although nitroglycerin was substituted shortly afterwards. Wells are shot for the purpose of increasing the flow of oil and gas A shot-hole in the producing horizon, with its contributory fissures and fractures, increases the area of and stimulates drainage into the hole. The shot-hole also acts as a collecting basin from which the oil is pumped. As a rule, hard or close-grained sands or limes are shot, other more or less porous and soft formations usually do not require shooting. and might be injured by blasting. Shooting is also resorted to in mechanical trouble such as straightening crooked holes, sidetracking pipe or tools, and for severing frozen strings of casing or drill pipe. Explosives arc also used sometimes to extinguish oil or gas-well fires although that work, which involves unusual conditions and methods, does not properly come within the classification of oil-well shooting. Some Factors to Be Considered in Shooting Wells Although nitroglycerin has been used extensively for more than half a century in shooting oil and gas wells, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to the proper method of shooting or the amount of explosive required to produce best results in a particular formation. The possibility of shooting unproductive or cavey formations above or below the productive horizons, shooting into lower water, destroying casing seats, and the splitting or collapsing of casing strings, are factors that require consideration. The engineering departments of a number of the larger oil companies are making a study of methods of shooting, and the amounts of liquid nitroglycerin or other explosives required in shooting various productive
