A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

More than 400 academic, government, and industry representatives attended the second symposium on ash utilization and technology held in Pittsburgh, Pa., March 10-11, 1970. Sponsored by the National Coal Association, Edison electric Institute, American Public Power Association, National Ash Association, and the Bureau of Mines, the symposium featured 23 formal presentations by leading experts from Europe and the United States on all major phases of ash production, utilization, and research. Abstracts of all the papers are grouped right after this introduction, and the full symposium proceedings follow. Biographical sketches of the representatives are given in an appendix. As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.

The paper provides an overview of subsidence research which was done by the Sasol Company in South Africa over a period of more than six years. The magnitudes of subsidence elements in South Africa are largely similar to those in the U.S.A. and Australia, as opposed to Europe. The research resulted in a subsidence prediction method with a new approach to the prediction of ground strain. The paper also describes the effects of subsidence on various commonly occurring surface structures such as roads, overland conveyor belts, pipe lines and power pylons. It is concluded that while most structures are not specifically designed to accommodate mining induced displacements, they can nontheless be undermined safely and economically with only minor precautions.

"The Glencore Raglan mine Concentrator, located in Quebec’s Nunavik region, has been in operation since 1997. The nickel metallurgical plant was originally designed to process 100 tonnes per hour of ore to produce 130 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate per year at 16% Ni. The increased grinding capacity and the discovery of rich ore bodies have increased the annual production to more than 190 000 tonnes of concentrate at 19% Ni. In 2014, the Metallurgical group, with support from BBA, implemented an expert control system on the flotation circuit. This project was initiated to cope with the high variability of the concentrator’s feed. Increasing the plant recovery and final concentrate grade were also important project objectives. The implementation of the expert system ensures better control of concentrate inventory while maintaining maximum plant throughput. This paper describes the successful implementation of the new control system, the control technology selection and the flotation circuit optimization. It will also discuss the performances obtained with this new approach and the improved process stability.IntroductionThe Raglan Mine is located in Northern Quebec along the 62th parallel. Many accidents occur in the mining industry as a result of the instability of material during handling and processing operations. Accidents due to dump point instability at stockpiles, and at spoil or waste piles, for example, occur with alarming frequency. Miners must be trained to be better aware of these hazards. Information on safe working procedures at stockpiles and surge piles is provided. Mine operators must review their training and operating procedures regularly to ensure that hazardous conditions are avoided.

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.

The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in Northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations in such contexts require: 1. Good political risk information; 2. A thoroughgoing political risk management plan; and 3. A strategy to deal with political risk perception on the part of the investing public. Obtaining quality political risk information, developing a political risk management plan, and addressing political risk perception are the foci of this work.

"During the last two decades lamproites have joined kimberlites as the only two known primary sources of economic quantities of diamonds. This paper contrasts the petrography, primary and xenocrystic mineralogy and pipe geology of these petrogenetically separate rock types. The petrographic discrimination of kimberlites and lamproites from each other, as well as other rock types found during diamond prospecting, is discussed. Kimberlites and lamproites can be classified texturally and mineralogically. Such classifications highlight the differences between, and among, lamproites and kimberlites. The implications of these differences for diamond exploration programs are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application of petrography. IntroductionKimberlite was the term coined in the late 19th century to describe the host rock of diamond at the type locality, Kimberley, South Africa (Lewis, 1887, 1888). Innumerable kimberlites are now known worldwide; some of them contain economic quantities of diamond (e.g. South Africa, Botswana and Russia) while many are barren. Jennings (1989) suggests that less than 3% of the known kimberlites can be considered to be commercial. Kimberlite was thought to be the only important primary source of diamond for approximately a century. Until the late 1970s, lamproites were thought to be only academic curiosities. Some workers (e.g. Wade and Prider, 1940), however, did comment on certain similarities between lamproites and kimberlites and, hence, inferred a potential for lamproites to carry diamonds.The term lamproite was introduced by Niggli (1923) for leucite-bearing rocks from southeast Spain and Wyoming which had some unusual geochemical characteristics. Wade and Prider (1940) used the term lamproite (as defined by Troger, 1935) to embrace rock types found in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. All the lamproites described by Wade and Prider (1940) form distinct topographic features. Subsequently in the late 1970s, additional pipes, which have little or no relief, were discovered in the same area, but only as the result of a major diamond exploration program (Atkinson et al., 1984; Jaques et al., 1984, 1986). Some of these bodies are diamondiferous. In 1979, the Argyle pipe was discovered in the East Kimberley area which, in terms of grade, is the richest known primary diamond deposit in the world with some parts of the body having grades greater than 500 carats/100 tonnes (Madigan, 1983; Boxer et al., 1989). All the initial new discoveries in Western Australia resulted from classic stream sampling for ""kimberlite indicator minerals"" (Atkinson, 1989)."

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... Typical sedimentary sequences overlying coal seams consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rider coal seams. In many surface coalmine settings, these sediments are saturated; and prior dewatering of them is necessary for effective and economic mining, including the stacking of saturated spoils. Such sedimentary sections usually have a very low vertical hydraulic conductivity that does not allow them to drain in a timely manner prior to their being stripped. One potential solution is installation of drainwells. Drainwells are small diameter wells that can collect water laterally from the various more permeable layers in the overburden and then gravity drain it to a lower layer – often the coal seam being mined – where it can be removed by pumping wells or sumps located in the bottom of the pit. A ground-water flow model utilizing the 3-dimensional finite element code MINEDW has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of usingdrainwells in a hydrogeologic setting that is typical of the Powder River Basin. A series of numerical simulations were completed using various combinations and spacings of drainwells and pumping wells to dewater the overburden and coal seams. The numerical simulations suggest that drainwells can be a very effective method of overburden dewatering.

"Aeromagnetic data can be useful in helping to delineate structures and rock types in gold exploration. Magnetic anomalies associated with Archean volcanic belts in northeastern Ontario can be quickly and effectively analyzed in profile form with the use of model curves. The model curves help to locate contacts between strata. They also help to estimate the magnetite content of the rocks and their depth beneath overburden.An aeromagnetic map of part of Catharine Township, Ontario has been analyzed with the aid of model curves. Several magnetic rock types, potential fault zones and areas of relatively thick overburden were delineated.IntroductionIn any exploration program, a good understanding of the stratigraphy, rock types and structure enhances the possibility of success. For example, environments which host gold deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt may be characterized as follows (Jensen, 1980; Pyke, 1980):(I) They have major faults, especially as tectonic boundaries between volcanic piles which include mafic and ultramafic rocks and clastic sedimentary rocks or gneisses.(2) They have subvolcanic felsic intrusions.(3) They have extensive carbonitization, with or without carbonate and sulphide-facies iron formation.In all cases, delineation of structure and rock type should be a major objective in exploration. The analysis of magnetic data can be a useful tool in this task. This paper is presented with the purpose of describing the application of the magnetic method to gold exploration in Archean volcanic terrains.Magnetic AnalysisTotal-intensity magnetic contour maps can be used to discriminate rock units according to differences in magnetization. However, because of smoothing of texture resulting from the compilation procedure and the fact that survey lines are widely spaced, contours should not be directly used for quantitative analysis. A much more definitive means of magnetic analysis is provided by the use of the original profile or chart recordings. Model curves provide a basis for analyzing these profiles both accurately and rapidly."

This paper is intended partly as a summary of the conclusions that have been arrived at by various authorities on this matter, and also with a view to initiate some discussion on the subject, especially as most of the quartz gold mines in Victoria are operated without having any proper assay plans or any idea of the real values other than those given by the mining managers, who, from experience in the particular cases, are supposed to be able to arrive at a correct idea of the true values of- the ore, and, in many cases, oppose any other methods than their own, holding the view that no sampling is equal in correctness to the bulk sample of the battery. The necessity of properly sampling and estimating the ore in a mine in every case, perhaps hardly needs to be urged on the members of the Institute, but is not, apparently, so obvious to others.It is proposed to confine this paper to the sampling of ore reserves in a mine, and the various points which have to be taken into consideration in arriving at values, from the assayer's point of view, leaving the methods of sampling metallurgical products out of consideration for the present. "It is advisable to define" ore reserves" as ore exposed on three sides at least, and accessible to the sampler on all three. "Prospective ore" would include all ore not so fully exposed; but which may, from the nature of the case, and the geological conditions prevailing, be reasonably supposed to exist.

Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. Muskett, Tasker and Hobson (1962), in applying the method of Browning and McVay in pilot-scale tests, reported difficulty because of activation of quartz and felspar by iron salts introduced during milling of the ore.The flotation of beryl, reported by Ashton and Weir...

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

A subsurface study of the Maria Lode and associated hydrothermal alteration of andesites within the Karangahake epithermal gold-silver deposit defined the local evolutionary sequence in the once active geothermal system.   Some implications for mining of epithermal deposits arise as a result.

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...
