Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

These studies have lead them to conclude that the past performance of many project developers does play a major part in any external financial investment for new or expanding resource based projects. In this paper the authors look particularly at the influence of parties outside the direct control of developers and the effect of' these parties on projects and conclude with a number of points as guidelines for potential project developers.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

The control of converter slag chemistry and slag viscosity has played an important role in optimizing converter operations. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been used to predict the chemistry and viscosity of converter slag. The effect of oxygen potential, SiO2/Fe in slag, detection of slag blow endpoint, and temperature on slag viscosity, liquidus temperature of converter slag and skimming operation has been discussed. Some applications of the industrial operations have been presented.

The heat of fusion of silver was measured using high temperature differential scanning calorimetry (HTDSC). Heating rate, sample mass, calibration standard and cover gas flow rate were varied to determine their impact on instrument accuracy and reproducibility. Good reproducibility was achieved in most of the runs. Accuracy was not satisfactory in most of the runs, though three runs gave results within 1.7%, 3.3% and 3.5% of the literature value, within the acceptable limits. A larger mass and higher heating rate tend to generate more accurate results.

From 1981-84, Bureau of Mines personnel examined and evaluated mines and prospects in the highly mineralized 62,400 acre Inyo Mountains U. S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wilderness Study Area (WSA), located east of Lone Pine, CA. The 62,400 acres studied is the part of the 87,145 acre WSA designated as suitable prior to February 28, 1983. The WSA is underlain principally by quartz monzonite and quartz diorite that have intruded sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three types of mineral deposits are present: 1) gold in fissure veins, 2) silver in fissure and replacement veins, and 3) talc in metasomatic lenses. Of the 84 nines, mills, and prospects examined, 54 are significant: 1) 5 in the intrusive rocks total about 4.4 million tons of inferred marginal gold reserves averaging 0.24 oz gold and 0.74 oz silver/ton; 2) three associated with intrusive-sedimentary rock contact zones total about 280,000 tons of inferred subeconomic silver resources averaging 7 oz silver/ton; 3) 27 gold and silver occurrences in the intrusive and sedimentary rocks total about 1.2 million tons of material in poorly defined bodies too small or low grade to be resources; 4) 15 gold and silver occurrences in the intrusive and sedimentary rocks are too poorly exposed to estimate tonnage and grade; and 5) four talc deposits along intrusive-sedimentary contact zones have inferred marginal reserves totaling about 640,000 tons. The marginal gold reserves at $450/oz might be profitably mined (reserve) at a gold price of about $600/oz and the subeconomic silver resources at a silver price in excess of about $27/oz. The marginal talc reserves might become minable at prices of about $50/ton and $80/ton for unprocessed and processed talc, respectively, after present supply sources are depleted. At most of the 54 significant mines and prospects, additional reserves or resources would likely be disclosed by trenching or drilling. Present in the WSA are 13 gold mills, numerous small pits and cuts, 270 underground workings totaling about 36,000 ft, and 80 mining benches totaling about 11,000 ft. Gold, silver, or talc were produced from most of the workings. A total of 1,561 lode and 18 placer samples were taken.

Work places of an underground coal mine are required (30 CFR 1719) to be illuminated while self-propelled equipment is used. Permissible machine mounted systems have been developed and applied satisfactorily to many mining operations. However, some low seam and thin seam equipment has been difficult to illuminate because reliable, direct current systems and compact, low output, low glare luminaires were not available. This program resulted in the design and prototype construction of compact, low glare luminaires and AC and DC power systems, particularly suited to resolving illumination problems on low and thin seam mining equipment. Design objectives were based on enhancing the prospects for thin seam illumination solutions through definition of a product which could challenge markets enjoyed by higher glare luminaires and through reduction of technical risks associated with any new product development as well as the MSHA certification process.

The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores, and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means acid methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes of physical separation. Thus, in 1919, Coghill and Bonardi 3/ published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/ Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates 6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama.

The properties required for a com-pound to form useful thermoelectric materials are described. Uranium compounds which might have these properties are reviewed. Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

The report recommends criteria for the design of safe surface mine haulage roads. Information relevant to road design at surface mine sites delineates vertical and horizontal alignment; subbase and surface materials; drainage; cross-slope, superelevation; runaway vehicle protection; and road and vehicle maintenance criteria. An appendix Is included which details the study methods used in compiling the final report information. A bibliography following the main text lists literature referenced for the report data and which is available as a valuable tool for use by individuals involved in haul road design.

The extraction of iron and lead from their oxides with a volatile organic ligand such as acetylacetone in the gas phase offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant, recovery of pure metals, and a reduced environmental impact compared with conventional extraction processes. The influence of reaction temperature, ligand flow rate, and metal oxide levels on the extraction and rates of reaction of iron and lead from single metal oxide (synthetic haematite (Fe2O3) and synthetic massicot (PbO)) systems in a fluidized bed was studied. It was found that at the investigated acetylacetone flow rates, the influence of mass transfer was limited, but that the reaction suffered from reactant starvation. When the metal load increased the effect of starvation on the rate of reaction also increased. The reaction kinetics increased with an increase in temperature for both systems. At low metal oxide concentrations more that 80 per cent of the iron and lead could be extracted from their respective metal oxides after only four hours.

This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various open-pit mines in the United States. These reports have been prepared in cooperation with various mining companies. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technological information on mining methods and practices. This report describes exploration, development, equipment, and mining by open-pit methods of the remainder of an ore body that had been previously worked by underground methods. The Tripp pit of the Consolidated Coppermines Corp. is located at Kimberly, Nev., a small mining company town having an elevation of 7,250 feet, 9 miles by road west of Ely, Nev. (fig. 1). The pit extends over the area formerly mined by underground methods from the Morris and Brooks shafts.

The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

Two triggered barrier systems and several extinguishing agents were tested against coal dust explosion propagating in the main entry of the Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. One system used a high-pressure cylinder to propel the extinguishant; the second system used pressurized nitro-gas or Halon 1301 (CF3Br) in a low-pressure system to power the disperser. The relative efficiencies of the extinguishants were determined by compar¬ing calculated concentrations of the extinguishant clouds present in the mine during suppressing of the explosions. Results showed the following trend of increasing effectiveness: Purple-K (KHC03)<water<hybrids consisting of foam or water combined with Halon 1301<Halon alone. On a weight basis, water was two to three times as efficient as Purple-K, whereas the hybrids and Halon alone were only marginally superior to water. Maximum efficiency of an extinguishant is attained by high rates of discharge from the barrier and by minimizing the time interval between onset of discharge and flame arrival to that necessary for discharge. Both the high- and low-pressure barrier systems were demonstrated to be capable of suppressing coal dust explosions; however, because of the potential hazard of the former, the low-pressure system is considered to be the most attractive prototype.

"Ecological Engineering, a biotechnological approach to the decommissioning of base metal mining wastes, is being tested on two pits (Gloryholes) in Newfoundland, Canada. Pit #2 has an average pH of 3.5 and flows into Pit #1 where, through additional ground water contribution, the pH is circumneutral, ranging between 5.5 to 7.The AMD in Pit #2 originates from underground workings and exposed massive sulphide on the pit walls. The overflow from Pit #1 averages about 10 L/s with less than 0.2 mg/L of Cu and 40 mg/L of Zn.Ecological Engineering utilizes organic substrate as a source of carbon and nutrients for microbial populations which can generate alkalinity and reduce metals. In 1989, limnocorrals (enclosures of 4 m diameter and approx 3 m depth) were placed in both pits to test the most suitable organic amendment (peat and sawdust). Microbial alkalinitygeneration was evident 95 days after placement of the amendment on July 4, 1989. The pH had increased after 120 days from 3.5 to 4.5 and by day 480 the pH was 7 in limnocorrals in Pit #2. Zinc concentrations in the limnocorrals in Pit #2, dropped from an average of 35 mg/L to about 2 mg/L or less, by day 480.A scaled-up experiment has been under way since August 25, 1990, where 390 m3 are treated in pit #2 and 750 m3 in Pit #1. One hundred eighty days after placement of the amendment, zinc was reduced in the acid Pit #2 from 40 mg/L to 15 mg/L. Research is underway to determine those factors which limit microbial activity."

Preface The intention of this paper is to provide the reader with knowledge gained here at Memorial University regarding the practical use of the Bruker SDD x-ray detector for applications in image analysis. Included below are descriptions of the detector’s characteristics and observations regarding precautionary use. What is described below is relevant to the XFlash® model 3001 detector only, whereas the model 4010 is the new and currently available detector. The manufacturer has provided up-to-date information and a figure that presents very different behaviour relative to the characteristics described in this paper. That information and figure is also included here as an addendum (see figure 9). Introduction It has been more than two decades since an image analyzer has been proposed based on the unique imaging characteristics and spatial resolution provided by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with energy discriminating x-ray (EDX) acquisition (Reid et al, 1984). From the inception of technique, technology of the day has played the major role for making applications increasingly more practical. Computers, digital imaging, and softwares together with computer automation of modern digital SEMs have all played their part in advancing the technique to where it is today.

This report presents a survey of published novel coal cutting (mining) concepts and a brief discussion of each one. A preliminary evaluation follows which identifies promising concepts, emphasizing reduced dust generation and economic production potentials.
