In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. During the period 1979 thru 1982. Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United StAtes Department of the Interior's Bureau vi Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and. the results are described in this report.

This study focused on the chemical reactions between uranium tailings fluids and cores of subjacent bedrock from the site of the Cotter Corporation uranium mill at Canon City, Colorado. Actual and synthetic tailings fluids were forced through cores of bedrock. The pH of the effluent solutions was the dominant control on the behavior of dissolved species in solution. The pH depended on the presence or absence of calcite cement in the rocks. Calcite neutralized acidic raffinates and caused the precipitation of iron, manganese, aluminum, and possibly uranium. Chloride, sulfate, and sodium were not retarded upon passage through the cores, and sulfate and chloride should be useful as tracers of escaping tailings fluids. Zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel, uranium, and vanadium exhibited high mobility under acidic conditions and were strongly retarded at elevated pH. Calcium was released due to dissolution of calcite and ion-exchange. Magnesium was not retarded in concentrated solutions, but showed moderate retardation in dilute fluids. Potassium and ammonium both showed early retardation followed by breakthrough and mobility. The behavior of molybdenum was strongly dependent on pH, with retardation at low pH and mobility at elevated pH. Selenium was highly mobile under all conditions. Selenium should be a better tracer than molybdenum for many situations. Precipitation of carnotite appears to control the solubility of uranium and, possibly, vanadium. With the exception of the precipitation of aluminum and silica, all reactions were rapid.

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy), and the explanation of those facts (geognosy). The facts to observe are : I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. 11. The amount of vertical subsidence occurring over a longwall operation is a function of the thickness of material removed, the quantity and quality of any fill material, the width of the extraction, and the depth. The relationship between these variables is empirically determined, and subsidence can be predicted using only a few easily established constants which are subject to local conditions, such as the angle of draw. Associated with the vertical subsidence are both tensional and compressional horizontal strains. The component of strain in the direction of face advance is temporary, while the component perpendicular to the direction of working is permanently retained by the ground. It is these horizontal strains and the vertical strain (tilt) which result in damage to surface structures. It is possible to ameliorate the consequences of mining subsidence by utilizing the well-proved techniques described in this paper in the underground operations and on the surface. INTRODUCTION In the past, American mining practice in stratified deposits has been mostly restricted to production by the room-and-pillar system where a sizable percentage of the salable product is left in place as pillars. These pillars are usually regularly spaced and provide a permanent support for the roof of the mine and the surface above. The longwall system employs an advancing face which may be as much as several hundred yards long and some sort of breaking and loading machine which moves back and forth along the length of the face. The roof is supported behind the face only to a distance required to provide working space for the production machine. The supports are then withdrawn and the roof is allowed to cave. The longwall system therefore possesses the various advantages of complete extraction, thus effectively increasing reserves, while at the same time eliminating the necessity and cost of installing artificial supports such as roof bolts and heavy steel girders over large areas. Longwall mining has long been practiced in Europe, where it has undergone an involved development, culminating in the recent perfection of powered-loading machines and automatic self-propelled supports, offering high productivity. This paper looks at recent advances in the United Kingdom (UK) tunnelling industry with particular reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. A 1.8 km long twin bore tunnel is the centrepiece of the A3 Hindhead scheme, which commenced construction in 2007 and is being delivered under a UK Highways Agency early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunnelling medium is a æsoft rockÆ sandstone for which there was little previous tunnelling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240 m long section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels. The innovative approach to the design of the following is discussed:the æpermanentÆ primary lining,an observational technique allowing optimisation of the steel pipe umbrella design,a plain concrete secondary lining designed for resistance to a hydrocarbon fire, anda spray-applied membrane.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits æPrecious and base metal-richÆ and æSn-Ag-polymetallicÆ ofNorthern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centres.   Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and polymetallic provinces.

Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite-bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (egKiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (eg Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidised fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelised influx of a specialised high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

Irrigation of agricultural crops may be a cost-effective option for the utilization of gypsiferous minewater as it may also create an opportunity to produce crops during the dry winter season on farm sin South Africa, such as in Mpumalanga. In this study, intensive field monitoring systems were developed and implemented to assess the feasibility and sustainability of irrigation with gypsiferous mine water. Soil water and salt balance components, as well as crop yields, were monitored in field trials carried out at Kleinkopjé and New Vaal Collieries (Anglo Coal), and at Syferfontein (Sasol). Field measurements indicated that high crop and pasture yields can be obtained, provided fertilization and irrigation water management are appropriate. Soil water and salt balances indicated that considerable amounts of minewater can be used and considerable masses of salts can be removed through precipitation of gypsum in the soil profile. With appropriate management, water and salt runoff and salt leaching can be intercepted, thereby minimizing the impact on groundwater. The SWB model is being validated through on-going monitoring. This will allow the use of the SWB model at other sites to predict the long-term impact of irrigation with mine water on soil and groundwater, as well as to run scenario simulations in order to recommend sustainable management of irrigation with minewater.

An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0·4 p.p.m. Pt, 0·1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0·06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32·67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0·03-2·0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

"Early in World War II it became apparent that the known bauxite re- serves might not be adequate to supply the demands of the American aluminum-producing industry, as the transportation of bauxite from abroad to this country might easily be interfered with by hostile action. Consequently, the Bureau of Mines set up an intensive, well-integrated program for the production of cell-grade alumina from low-grade domestic ores. This pro-gram of investigation covered the production of alumina from clay, alumite, red mud, and other low- and marginal-grade ores. In line with the Bureau's usual policy of conservation of natural resources, it was decided that the investigation should be extended to cover the production of alumina and other valuable byproducts from aluminum dross.Statistical information showed that during the year 1943-44, an average of 2,900 tons of aluminum dross was generated monthly. This dross, after partial removal of free metal, had an average metallic aluminum content of approximately 9 percent. Some of this dross was produced by the melting of alloyed aluminum; but a large proportion 1,700 out of 2,900 tons - was generated by two producers of primary aluminum, and the dross did not contain an great proportion of alloying metals. Compared with dross from other sources, this 60 percent of the country's capacity can be assumed to have relatively uniform composition. Moreovcr, the problem of collection and distribution can be minimized because of the relatively small number of plants included in the organization of these two producers of virgin metal.Except for large pieces of metallic aluminum that easily can be mechanically separated for remelting, this dross has been discarded and scrapped. Inasmuch as chemical analyses show that the alumina content of dross is far higher-than ordinary ores - 111 percent alumina equivalent in dross compared to 57 percent alumina in bauxite - aluminum dross is a far richer source of aluminum than any known naturally occurring ores. The discard, of this waste material during the war and reconversion periods would be unsound economically. The work reported herein describes tests at the College Park Station of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of metal, alumina, ammonia, methane, and abrasive-grade corundum from dross."

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUMAnimal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

"Historically, mineral processors have used inferential data like plant instrumentation, assays, and grind sizes to monitor the performance of their plants. The ability to monitor the minerals themselves on a daily basis has eluded all but the very largest and richest of operations. The advent of a new generation of compact, robust, and user-friendly SEM-based automated mineralogy systems looks set to accomplish this, aiming to bring daily mineral monitoring of plant performance within the reach of all mills from mid-size upwards. This paper describes the use of this machine at Greens Creek Mine, a 2.5 ktpd Ag-Au-Pb-Zn operation with a complex flotation flowsheet. During the trial, the machine provided turnaround from sample collection to reporting averaging 24-36 h for key daily samples. All equipment was located within the compact mill, and proved highly reliable despite the challenging environment. Turnaround time was fast enough for metallurgists to understand, and, where possible, respond to ore and process changes while they were still happening. The plethora of data generated was filtered to a simple report whereby mill management could quickly absorb key daily mineral-based performance indicators. This paper will describe how the data was used to understand the key drivers behind metallurgical efficiency at Greens Creek, and how metallurgists began using the information to enhance daily mill performance."

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

The development of a laboratory and pilot-scale high-tension electrostatic flowsheet for the production of iron-ore super concentrates having silica contents in the range of 0.1% is presented, A variety of hematite and magnetite ores were tested with this flowsheet, and the pertinent metallurgical data are given. The applications and limitations of this process are brought out in terms of both practical and theoretical considerations. There have been many new developments in the past few years that have required mineral beneficiation engineers to consider new techniques for iron-ore concentration. Developments in iron powder metallurgy, and particularly the making of sheet metal directly from high-purity iron-ore concentrates, and the concept of using metallized pellets as a substitute for scrap in electric-furnace steelmaking have created demands for what is commonly referred to as iron-ore superconcen-trates. In most cases, specifications for superconcentrates are that they contain less than 0.1% total gangue, with some applications requiring less than 0.05% gangue. To produce these concentrates, new and modified processes are being developed, and the three methods receiving attention as the primary concentrating methods are: 1) Magnetic separation in which dry rotor-type equipment is used for magnetite and the high-intensity magnets are used for hematite. 2) Amine flotation. 3) "High-tension" electrostatic separation (or, elec-trodynamic concentration). This paper examines the high-tension electrostatic process in terms of its limitations and abilities for the production of iron-ore superconcentrates. A technically effective and simple flowsheet was developed through laboratory and 5 and 100-ton pilot-plant studies for the production of concentrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% SiO, with iron recoveries between 85 and 90%. The process is also shown to be economically feasible. Laboratory Test Program Separation Characteristics: The suitability of the electrostatic high-tension method for iron-ore supercon-centration stems from the fundamental mechanism governing the process, i.e., particles are separated on the basis of differences in electrical conductivities. This conductivity is a characteristic property of minerals, and if the difference between the conductivities of two min- erals is great enough, then their separation can be performed by a high-tension machine. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the critical factor is the time necessary for the particle charge density, which is established by a corona discharge field, to decay to a level such that the centrifugal force acting on the particle exceeds its electrostatic, or image, force. At this point, the particle can leave the rotor at some trajectory and fall into an appropriate product receptacle. This decay time is directly proportional to electrical conductivity, and the process variables, such as feed rate, rotor speed, electrode configuration, and rotor composition, are selected to optimize the ability of the separator to resolve different conductivities. Table 1 lists the measured conductivities for some of the iron and gangue minerals used in developing the flowsheet. These results were obtained by using the conductivity cell described by Lawver and Wright.'
