The widely accepted inverse relationship between copper prices ail stocks, has been commonly used by analysts to explain the behavior of the copper market and to forecast film copper pries. However, empirical data have not shown such a clear relationship between copper prices and stacks. Existing evidence only indicates a weak tong-nut relationship that vanishes in some periods. In this paper a simple comprehensive model is provided which explains both parallel and opposite direction movements between prices and stocks. Former are explained mainly by stocks demand expansions-contractions while the latter are in essence due to increases in the supply curve. Furthermore, econometric estimations are provided, thus giving a powerful tool to forecast and explain price developments of the copper market.

Due to very demanding environmental rules, and to the incrementing impurities contents in the processed concentrates, Codelco Norte smelter permanently faces new demands for planning the production program with the present fulfillment of the environmental regulation. Accordingly, the CN smelter along with IM2, developed an impurity distribution simulation model, M-DICE, which predicts the impurities behavior for each of the process units of the smelter under different process configurations and concentrates quality. The development of the M-DICE included the gathering of operational data for the process units of the CN smelter, including temperature, oxygen enriched air, matte grade, etc. Then based on a mass balance for each of the process units involved in the smelter a thermodynamic evaluation was done to derive the arsenic fractional distribution among the condensed (matte/white metal/copper/slag) and gas phases. Then, the validated M-DICE was able to predict the arsenic behavior in the Teniente converter processing complex concentrates with high arsenic content, among others. At present, M-DICE is in its last stage of development, and is expected to be a suitable environmental and process management?s tool for the Codelco-Chile?s smelters.

Sulphide melts formed in the course of smelting of nickel and copper-nickel feed (matte) actually are sulphide-metallic melts since sulphur contained in the melts is in deficiency with respect to metals. The level of metallization is rather relevant feature of sulphide melts and is widely used in calculating material and heat balances for pyrometallurgical processes. Despite of the above parameter? importance, the investigators have no single opinion on what should be understood under metallization level and the method of its determination. In the present study we present the results of our own experimental and theoretical researches that have allowed determination of some mechanisms of sulphide melts? crystallization. Based on the mechanisms revealed new scientifically justified approach has been offered for determining level of metallization of the components present in sulphide melts. It has been demonstrated that sulphur distribution between the melts is substantially different from generally accepted concept.

A MmNi5 alloy is synthesized by a combination of mechanical milling and low temperature heating processes. Synthesis time is 40 h for powders milled in a low energy ball mill at room temperature. A reduction in milling time is obtained if massive sample is mechanically milled at shorter times (2 h to 10 h) and heated at temperatures lower (600 ºC) than the usual temperatures used in equilibrium methods (>800 ºC). The alloy formation is detected even at a combination of temperatures as low as 200 ºC and milling times as short as 5 h. The temporal evolution of mechanical milling process was followed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to detect the main stages of milling. Four stages were detected: Initial, Intermediate, Final and Completion. These stages were correlated to an enhancement of the synthesis method by combination of times of milling shorter than 10 h and temperatures of heating lower than 600 ºC.

In January 1995, Disputada Mining Company Ltd. (Compañia Minera Disputada de Las Condes) started up the Expansion Project for the Chagres Smelter, following an investment of US$M 2 15. The new smelter replaced the 44,000 tomes per year revervatory furnace with an Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) designed to produce 118,000 tonnes per year of copper. Nowadays, this smelting unit has achieved a 40% over design performance. The landmarks of this modernization project are described. The start up period in 1995-1996 was characterized by the impacts of several restrictions that prevented the smelter from reach design production. The design performance was reached in 1997-1998 through the implementation of solutions designed to eliminate, or at least mitigate, the restrictions found early on. The smelter has been further optimized in the 1999-2000 period, leading to a new record anode copper production rate of 148,000 tonnes in 2000 while obtaining 98% approval for our different anode shapes. The objective of this paper is to discuss the consecutive processes of start-up, achievement of design capacity, and operational improvements to go well beyond the design capacity. These processes took place between early 1995 and late 2000, under the principles of Continuous Improvement that promotes the effective participation of the workers in the technology innovation and Enterprise Management.

CrN, TiN and Ti-B-N coatings were deposited onto H13 hot-working tool steel and alumina substrates by arc-PVD. The coatings were characterized with respect to their mechanical and structural properties. Oxidation behavior of the coatings on alumina substrates was investigated by TG/DTA. Samples coated on H13 substrates were oxidized in a tube furnace under atmospheric conditions at specific temperatures determined from TG/DTA tests of the same coatings deposited on alumina substrates. The oxide scale morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Oxide scale thickness change and TG data were used to calculate oxidation reaction activation energies. It was determined that boron addition into TiN coating improves not only mechanical properties but also oxidation resistance. Depending on the substrate material different oxidation activation energy values for the TiN and Ti-B-N coatings were determined revealing the importance of film morphology on oxidation resistance.

Reliable furnace cooling technology is a domain of increasing concern to the pyrometallurgical industry as it can significantly increase process intensities, productivity and campaign times of furnaces. Although there are many advantages in using cooling systems, they also impose a variety of problems mainly related to safety, heat losses and sustainability of the operations. The choice of cooling system is hence a matter of trade-offs and differs for every metallurgical application. This paper gives a review of different cooling designs used in the ferrous, non-ferrous and alloying industries. Additionally, the paper systematically reviews aspects of materials selection, manufacturing, installation, water quality and furnace monitoring when using water cooled refractories.

The Gaspé smelter at Murdochville, Quebec, Canada introduced concentrate injection into elongated Peirce-Smith converters sized 1.96m x 12.5m (13 ft. by 41 ft.) in 1996, and commissioned a large, converter-like bath smelting vessel in April 1998. The new vessel, which is sized 4.27m x 16.1 5m (14ft. by 53ft.) has several interesting features designed to effectively utilize bath smelting technology for the requirements of the Gaspé smelter. For example, the vessel can operate on concentrate injection at upwards of 60-80 tph rate on an instantaneous basis, can operate as a large Peirce-Smith converter, while it is also fitted with matte and slag tapholes much akin to Noranda Process reactor, and includes a novel cold charge addition system. The new technology will eventually allow the capacity of the plant to increase from about 300,000 tonnes of concentrate per year to over 350,000 tonnes of concentrate per year while improving sulfur capture.

We prepared the water dispersed with Au particles ranging from 10 to 20 nm size by a novel wet chemical synthesis; generating seeds of Au cluster by adding a borane dimethylamine complex into chloroaureic acid (gold salt) solution, and then growing simultaneously with aminoalcohol included in the solution. As-prepared Au nano-particles with chemical surface modification were found to have some attractive performances, i.e., showing a high dispersiveness in an aqueous solution in a long time, sintering nano-particles at low temperature, and having low resistivity in the film prepared from nano-particles. In the case that smaller Au nano-particles were removed from as-prepared colloid, especially, Au thin film formed on the surface of Si plate showed the excellent value of 7.0x10-6ohm cm (reference peculiar resistance: 2.35x10-6 ohm cm).The sintering temperature was dependent on the elimination of 2-aminoethanol that modified on the surface of Au nano-particles.

During smelting of copper, arsenic in the feed reports to a large extent to the gas phase and some enters the anode copper. From the gas phase it is transferred during wet gas cleaning directly, or indirectly after dust processing, to aqueous solution. During the electrorefining and anode slimes processing, the anode arsenic content is also transferred to aqueous solution. Technology for the efficient removal of arsenic from process streams and cleaning of aqueous effluents is well established. However, the arsenic-bearing products, which thereby are generated, can vary widely in consistency, quality and quantity, from large amounts of gypsum contaminated with water-soluble arsenic compounds to residues with high arsenic content ' or arsenic products. Arsenic management in a copper smelter not only is involved with the duty of compliance to the gaseous and aqueous emissions standards but also should have as objective the minimization of the generation of arsenic-bearing and, in general, heavy metal-bearing solid waste. The present paper outlines options and the associated economic aspects for minimization of arsenic-bearing solid waste generation, for improvement of the environmental compatibility of the residues to be deposited and for the .production of commerciable arsenic compounds under appropriate market conditions.

The Polish copper concentrates are characterised by low content of sulphur and iron. At KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. two copper production technologies are in use. The shaft furnace process is used at the Legnica Copper Smelter and the Glogów I Copper Smelter. A single-stage direct to blister Outokumpu flash smelting process is used at the- Glogów II Copper Smelter. Melting copper concentrates in the shaft furnaces is carried out in a reducing atmosphere and the product obtained is a matte. Instead, a result of melting copper concentrates by an oxidising flash process blister copper of a quality similar to that of converter copper is obtained. The annual copper production at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. exceeds 450,000 tons. Another important metal is silver produced from slimes from copper electrolysis (about 1000 t/y). Moreover, such metals as Pb, Ni, Se, As, Au and other precious metals, including Pt and Pd, are recovered from various semiproducts. This paper presents technological flow sheet of the copper production in plants using the shaft furnaces and in another plant in which a single-state flash process is applied. Characteristics of products, methods of their utilisation, main parameters of particular technological operations, and advantages and shortcomings of the solution applied are presented. There are also discussed: the natural environment protection as well as directions of the KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. plants modernisation.

As one of the effective usages of various wastes discharged in non-ferrous metal industry, the synthesis of hydrotalcite was carried out using aluminum dross as a raw material. Hydrotalcite is one of the inorganic anion exchangers and has layered structure of complex hydroxide. The removal of toxic metal ions such as As(III), As(V), Cr(VI) and Se(IV) with the hydrotalcite was investigated, and the removal properties were compared from the viewpoint of the anion exchange amount and exchange rate. Hydrotalcite can be obtained by a co-precipitation method from the aluminum dross and the waste MgCl2 solution discharged in an aluminum regeneration process. Slight amounts of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and so on remain in the reaction product as an impurity component. Interlayer distance of the obtained hydrotalcite is about 0.3nm. Hydrotalcite changes to Mg-Al oxide by the calcination at 773K for 3h, and then hydrotalcite is formed again by a rehydration operation after calcination. The toxic metal ions are removed from aqueous solution by the anion exchange reaction in the pH region where toxic metal ions exist as the anionic species like AsO2-, HAsO42-,CrO42-, and SeO32-. The exchange amount is considerably concerned with the valence of anionic species and the size of anionic species. The removal of toxic metal ions were investigated from the engineering aspects such as the low concentration limit to be removed, the amount of hydrotalcite to be used for the perfect removal of toxic metal ions and so on.

Titanium dioxide is extracted from titaniferous ores by chloride and sulfate processes. These two processes produce wastes in the forms of iron chloride, iron sulfate and rare earth oxides gangue, each of which has to go through a further treatment before it can be disposed safely, which may be expensive. The shortage of high-grade ores is also making the two conventional processes less efficient. In view of the above mentioned problems, an alternate beneficiation process of roasting titaniferous ores with soda ash is discussed. The advantage of this process is that, there is no production of wastes. The impurities present in the ore can be selectively separated after the roasting process. The roasting of titaniferous ores with soda ash was carried out between temperatures of 873K and1173K for several hours. The roasting process resulted in the formation of complex alkali compounds and various sodium titanate compounds, depending on the Na2CO3to ore ratio. The phases formed after roasting were characterized using the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray florescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The phase equilibria in the Na-Ti-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases obtained after the roasting process. The effects of temperature and the proportion of sodium carbonate on titaniferous ores are also discussed. From the experimental data, the overall reaction kinetics and phases formed were analyzed to ascertain the mechanism of overall reaction and the rate-limiting steps.

Several new hydrometallurgical plants have been built in the past years. They have implemented new processes to treat new type of ores. New technologies have been used to improve metallurgical performance from the start. The cycle times between knowledge generation and innovation are often neglected in the traditional capital expenditures and building of these new process plants. The paper reviews several implementations in which they have started with new ways of using information management from the beginning. The implementation of a real time performance management infrastructure is reviewed to assist in the implementation of mine to product strategies, metallurgical mass balances, solvent extraction composition statistical process control, methods to minimize organic losses, reduce variable costs and to improve metal extraction. Several examples are provided to improve operations by simplifying the access and analysis of information from assets and metallurgical processes. Continuous improvement and innovations have been enabled to minimize start times and for faster troubleshooting and resolution of operational problems.

The Luanshya Smelter is a traditional Reverberatory Smelter which once worked with up to three coal-fired reverbs, and now operates one Reverb and one hot Peirce- Smith Converter, projected to produce approximately 42.000 tons per year of copper anodes. The aim of this study is to select a smelting technology which best fits the upgrading of the Smelter, such that low capital and operating costs are achieved for the projected design production capacity of 60.000 tpy, limited by the available supplies of concentrates. An equally important requisite is the compliance of present and future environmental regulations, which determines the need to install and Acid Plant to treat the smelter primary gases. In the process selection study, the following technologies were analyzed, at a Conceptual Engineering level: the Oxy-fuel Burner Reverb, the Teniente Converter, the CONTOP Cyclone Smelting Reactor, and further, the Ausmelt Furnace, the engineering of which was provided by the proprietary firm. The engineering of the other processes was developed by INDEC, which also integrated the comparative analysis of the four options. The analysis of a comprehensive set of technical factors, including integrated smelter metallurgical models, together with the evaluations of economical features, led to the selection of the CONTOP Smelting Technology for the modernization of the Luanshya Smelter.

In 1989 CSIRO Minerals initiated investigations into continuous converting of copper matte into low sulphur blister in Sirosmelt type reactors. Following the successful piloting of this processing route, some effort was directed towards a single stage copper making process where copper metal is made in one step from concentrate. The aim of the project is to develop a continuous process, which offers considerable environmental and economic benefits over conventional copper making processes, which use Pierce-Smith converters. In the selection of the optimum flowsheet a number of slag treatment options have been considered and tested. These unit operations include: leaching and electrowinning, flotation-leaching-electrowinning and flotation with recycling of recovered copper through the smelting vessel. In this paper the suitability of these process options are evaluated using the available information and recently measured copper recoveries from our testwork at CSIRO. The operating and capital costs of the various options have been estimated using Aspen Plus simulation procedures. The most attractive flowsheet in terms of capital and operating costs is the treatment of slag using mineral processing techniques and the recycle of a copper slag concentrate to the smelting vessel. It has been found that the chemistry of the slag being treated has a large bearing on the recovery of copper in flotation and hence on the economics of the process.

A thermodynamic study is reported on the chlorination of Fe(1-x.)O, Fe2O3, Cr2O3, MgO, Mg2SiO4 with chlorine in the presence or the absence of reducing atmospheres. The reactivities of these compounds as well as that of Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 using Cl2+N2, Cl2+air, and Cl2+CO gas mixtures were studied by non isothermal thermogravimetric analysis between 20 and 1000 °C. The same solids were chlorinated in a horizontal experimental set, during two hours between 350 and 1000 °C, in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres: The chlorination products were examined by XRD and SEM, and possible reaction paths were examined. Results indicate that the carbochlorination of these solids was better than their chlorination; Furthermore, the carbochlorination was performed at lower temperatures than those of the chlorination. Finally, the reaction extent was higher in the case of carbo-chlorination of these compounds. Based on these results, a process was suggested for the selective recovery of chromium compounds from the chromite concentrate.

"Colombia produces nine tons of electronic waste per year and there are approximately 60 tons accumulation generated in the last nine years. This work aims to establish a general methodology in the laboratory to recover gold, silver and platinum group present in electronic waste, also explore other forms of recovery of metals contained in electronic waste. We selected seven types of electronic cards present in the computers, which have their parent desoldering electronic components. Initially, we characterized the components of the cards through X-ray diffraction and SEM, to identify the metal species and composition. Tests were conducted laboratory hydrometallurgical recovery of metals. This paper proposes a methodology for laboratory-scale work.INTRODUCTIONColombia produces nine tonnes of electronic waste per year and build there in about 60 tons generated in the last 9 years [1], Computers, TVs, audio equipment, monitors, cell phones, remote controls, printers and operated toys battery, among others are part of this inventory, which mostly comes to landfills, because the lack of legislation to control the final destination of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and lack of efficient technologies to recover materials [2]. Under these circumstances which have environmental implications, technological and economic recovery is essential metals present in the electronic cards of computers, by hydrometallurgical with subsequent base metal electrodeposition [3]. Pyrometallurgical route is discarded by major implications for economic and environmental [4]. Recovery From this perspective, the determination of the metal fraction and the relationship between the different metals, using the SEM characterization techniques - BSE and XRD is indispensable [5] It follows with electrolytic dissociation processes in the leaching and electrodeposition [6], and unit operations in the laboratory to carry out successfully these processes on a larger scale. The fibrous precursor can be obtained by coordination precipitation process, using oxalate, cobalt chloride and ammonia. XRD pattern of precursor precipitated at pH=9.0 is different from that of ß-CoC2O4?2H2O precipitated at pH=1.0 which indicates that the precursor powders are one type of cobalt complex. According to the results of element analysis and IR spectra, it can be inferred that the composition of the precursor is [Co(NH3)x]C2O4?H2O(x=1.2?..6) formed by the coordination reaction at pH=9.00 in the Co(II)-C2O42--NH3-NH4+-H2O system. It?s found that the fibrous cobalt powders greatly inherited the morphologies of the precursors. Many factors could affect the formation of the fibrous cobalt precursor powders, such as the initial Co2+concentration, pH value and so on. The SEM images show how they influence the morphologies of the precursor powders. By adding proper surfactant, the dispersion of the precursor powders would be improved. At last, the final product-fibrous cobalt powders which are about 0.3~0.5min size and 40~60 in aspect ratio were produced by thermal decomposition of fibrous cobalt complex at 400~500°C in the weak reducing atmosphere.

Although nowadays gold extraction methods are very abundant, none of them is satisfying, especially, in the field of heap leaching of low grade gold ore. The traditional heap leaching method of cyanide method plays an inglorious role of badly environmental pollution. In this paper, a bran-new and innoxious method of gold extraction system, metal-ammonium-chloride-ammonia (MACA), was proposed, and also analyzed both thermodynamically and practically. Thermodynamically, according to the principles of simultaneous chemical equilibrium and electronic charge neutrality, the thermodynamics of Au-NH4Cl-NH3-H2O system was studied by using the exponential computation method and through MATLAB programming, and the solid figure of its potential - c(NH4Cl) - c(NH4OH) was drawn. The results showed when the concentrate of ammonia is higher than 0.6 mol?L-1, fAu+/Au is only about -0.2 v. Practically, the leaching results of a cuprous gold ore showed that the extraction of gold can reach to 80% in this system. The preliminary results of reduction of the rich solution with copper and zinc powders showed that with deoxygenizing, the reduction effects were relatively good. These new findings and results have established a theoretical and practical base for developing a new process for heap leaching of low grade gold ores in this system. And the new process owns a series of merits such as, non-cyanogens, nontoxic, broader applicability.
