Development of the Twin Buttes mine entailed the largest known preproduction stripping job in the history of mining. It linked earthmovers and conveyor belts in a new approach to development of a pit that may reach, or even exceed, dimensions of 1 x 1-1/2 miles at the surface and go as deep as 1800 feet. The orebody to be stripped was covered by an average of 460 feet of alluvial gravels, which presented an initial stripping job of great magnitude. The initial pit layout and the original time schedule established early in 1965 called for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000,000 tons of alluvial overburden before the end of 1969. Allowing about a year for equipment delivery, this schedule left four years to do the job averaging about 62-1/2 million tons per year. In 1964 when The Anaconda Company undertook the development of Twin Buttes, it was recognized that special planning was necessary for the disposal of waste material and tailings. Environ- mental control was a prime consideration and is particularly sensitive in the Twin Buttes area due to the proximity to residential developments. Disposal of the 250,000,000 tons of alluvium, as well as future rock and tailing waste material, presented a problem which Anaconda engineers resolved by designing a plan to spread out much of the alluvium over an extended area, including a massive 11- 1/2 mile dike system which will impound mill tailing in three basins. BOB FALCONER: Our next topic leader is Scott Lawson. Scott is manager of human resources for Independence Mining Company, Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, Victor, Colorado. Scott has 25 years of human resources management experience in the mining industry, surface and underground, precious and base metals. His topic this morning is "It's the Employee That Counts." SCOTT LAWSON: When reviewing the topic of productivity in a union versus nonunion workplace, we need to look at who, and not what, can make the difference in ensuring the success of a production-oriented operation. It's not explicitly whether the property is unionized or not, but whether the employee team (including the "management group") is working together to accomplish common, shared, and meaningful goals. The bottom line is what action or actions can be taken to develop trust and to strengthen working relationships that challenge and compel employees to willingly share their particular areas of expertise. I want to share a real-life experience that happened to me during the summer of 1961. Perhaps some of you will be able to relate to the following story. I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready for my first true work adventure. I found summer employment for myself and two friends with the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. Our jobs were as laborers, laying ties and rails, and unloading ballast. We made $2.62 an hour. We were fat cats! My friends and I took on the job with a great deal of vigor, to the dismay of our fellow workers. These workers were unionized by the Railway Workers, which I believe were affiliated with the Teamsters. Talk about being naive, we wrote the book in 1961. When we took the jobs, we did not realize the employees were represented by a union, even though we didn't think they worked too hard. Within our first two weeks of work, we established new daily records for laying virtually twice as many ties as had been standard, and we nearly tripled production by the end of our hall of fame railroad careers. We even took naively to the next level by lining up the ties for our afternoon work shift during our lunch break. In 1961, we thought we were the Mantle, Maris, and Colavito of tie laying. For the younger set in the audience, we would have felt like the McGwire, Griffey Jr., and "The Big Hurt" Thomas of tie laying. A section of the union contract allowed for a 60-day probationary period during which the employee was evaluated and also exempt from joining the union. An examination of the operating parameters, costs, and chemistry describes how the decision was made to switch to this treatment method. Plant data collected from the last several months will be used, along with considerations from an operator's viewpoint.

Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

I appreciate the opportunity to tell you something about Kerr-McGee's Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois. This new underground mine was a departure for us since our previous experience had been gained in large surface mines in Wyoming. Although we were new, we did have the corporate experience in the operation of deep uranium and potash mines in New Mexico and Wyoming, and an earlier underground coal mine in Southeast Oklahoma. In arriving at our final design, we evaluated numerous concepts and finally settled on a two seam mine sharing a single shaft and slope. The mine, in turn, would be supported by a heavy media processing plant designed to optimize the yield from either seam. Further, we wished to be able to keep the two seams separate so that we could sell either seam separately or in a blend. Due to the thickness of the coal, the practical area dedicated to the mine provided forty to fifty years operations at the selected mine capacities. It was important, therefore, that our design and selection of hardware and systems provide for long life and low maintenance in order to compete in today's competitive markets.

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont's strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley's mines and concentrators, as well as Magma's smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.

Airborne and ground magnetic surveys were made over and in the vicinity of the Sanford Hill ore body at Tahawus, Essex County, New York. These geophysical surveys served to: l. delineate, lithologic and structural features associated with the ore bodies; 2. indicate a major extension of the Sanford Hill ore body; and 3. guide a drilling program to prove this extension. The titaniferous magnetite ore body at Sanford Hill is associated with gabbro occurring in anorthosite. The contrast in the magnetic susceptibilities of these rock types, reflected in the magnetic measurements, allows geologic-mapping showing rock types and inferred structural features. The anomalous magnetic high of the airborne magnetometer survey indicated a southern extension of the Sanford Hill ore body. Diamond drilling, guided by the airborne and specifically the ground magnetic results, substantiated this interpreted ore extension to be of major magnitude.

Various geophysical tools have been tested over the last eight years to evaluate their usefulness in defining damaged rock zones in an underground facility at the WIPP site in New Mexico. These tools include direct current and frequency domain electrical methods and seismic tomography. The electrical measurements show a "drying rind" to exist around older excavations. Seismic tomography confirms that a rind of lower velocity has developed along walls. In combining these tools, a monitoring program has been proposed to observe long-term changes in bedded salt. Results from the monitoring of electrical data over a 2-year time period illustrate the applicability of the technique in an underground environment.

It will also give you some idea about who Luzenac America is and from where it came. Luzenac America was formed in July, 1992 as a result of the acquisition of the talc assets of Cyprus Minerals by RTZ of the United Kingdom. Cyprus Industrial Minerals was then merged with the other RTZ talc interests under the Luzenac name. Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

Serpentinite minerals are available in large quantities from asbestos mining activity. The granular or fibrous serpentite, at temperatures greater than 700°C, will recrystalize into olivine, forsterite and enstatite. These minerals have been used and studied for decades and are environmentally safe. The thermal process changes the composition and properties of the original mineral. Therefore, the substitution of the original mineral cannot simply be made and the applications for these new synthetic minerals need to be redeveloped. The two original mineral forms allow a wide range of new synthetic raw materials which can be adjusted to specific applications or custom needs.

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

A test of retrievable geologic storage of spent fuel assemblies from an operating commercial nuclear reactor is underway at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) of the U.S. Department of Energy his generic test is located 420 m below the surface in the Climax granitic stock. Eleven canisters of spent fuel approximately 2.5 years out of reactor core (about 1.6 kW/canister thermal output) were emplaced in a storage drift along with 6 electrical simulator canisters. Two adjacent drifts contain electrical heaters, which are operated to simulate within the test array the thermal field of a large repository. Fuel was loaded during April-May 1980 and initial results of the test will be presented.

This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.

At Gold Fields' Chimney Creek Mine, major reviews of the reclamation and closure plans are done concurrently with the annual mine planning required for budget preparation. This review includes identifying and scheduling reclamation work that can be done within the next few years and development of associated costs. Longer term mine, leach pad and waste dump development are examined to take advantage of any design changes that can reduce ongoing reclamation or closure requirements and reduce costs. The success and cost effectiveness of past efforts are continually evaluated to determine the best methods for reclamation.

The 1980 Mine Dewatering Act was enacted to protect water rights and to allow mine dewatering to proceed where impairment of a water right might have otherwise created a bar to mine development. In New Mexico, new appropriations for beneficial use are subject to the State Engineer's jurisdiction and are granted only upon a showing of non-impairment. Before 1980, mine dewatering was not considered a beneficial use, nor was it considered waste. The Act brings mine dewatering under the jurisdiction of the State Engineer, makes it subject to the same requirements as an application for appropriation for beneficial use, grants the right to replace the water of users whose rights would be impaired by mine dewatering without a plan of replacement, and extends the right of replacement to non-mining appropriations of water for beneficial use, Application of the Act requires determination of the definition of impairment (the threshold of significant impact on existing water rights), hydrologic evaluations to determine the impact of the proposed dewatering, and preparation and execution of a plan of replacement to avoid impairment of existing rights.

Mining of material without blasting and / or selectively becomes more and more important for high quality ROM-products. Surface Miners have been developed especially for this purpose. The cutting technology of these machines has been improved, so that harder material as well as wet and sticky materials can be cut with better results now. Especially the cutting drum design and more precise drum manufacturing process now allow production and equal tool wear over a long period. The better knowledge of rock parameters influencing the cuttability and cutting results allow higher production, less cutting tool wear and therefore reduced production costs.

More and more mining underground is being conducted using the longwall method. Likewise, many new surface mines use area or mountaintop removal methods. These methods can have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. The overall study of the effects on surface and groundwater from mining is referred to as the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) determination of mining and reclamation. Collection and interpretation of information concerning groundwater and surface water quality and quantity, as well as detailed geologic analysis, is required to adequately define the impacts of mining. This paper discusses the present day requirements and methodology of preparing a PHC for a large mining operation in the eastern coalfields.
