The Mesabi Range extends continuously from near Grand Rapids, on the Mississippi River, E.N.E. for a distance of about 1120 miles to near Birch Lake, where it is covered by the large gabbro flow which forms the base of the Keweenawan series. The same formation (Mesabi) appears again near Gunflint Lake on the international boundary, and shows as far east as Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. Between Mesabi station, on the Duluth and Iron Range Railway, and Birch Lake, although considerable exploration work has been done, there is no evidence of concentration of ore in workable bodies. The Gunflint beds are thin alternating layers of chert and hematite. Alt the workable deposits at present known, on the Mesabi, lie between Mesabi station and Grand Rapids, the greater number being St. Louis County simplified geologic column is given herewith instead of the complete correlation table given by the United States Geological survey.

The key design parameters of roof bolting using expansion - shell type support for underground coal mine roof support are bolt length, bolt spacing, installed load and anchorage capacity. Depending on the utilization of suspension effect or friction effect, the bolt length is dictated either by the distance between the roof surface and the first overlying strong strata encountered or the desired magnitude of reduction in bending stress at the roof surface, The current prevailing practices about the bolt spacing and installed load are that an initial torque of 125 - 170 ft-lbs is applied and the bolts are spaced at 4- or 5- ft. square grid pattern. This seems to be a rather broad generalization in view of the great geological variances which are expected in underground coal mines. A modest evaluation program to measure the effectiveness of current roof bolting practices is to monitor the load history of roof bolts during a complete mining cycle including the phases of room development and pillar robbing. The load history, when compared with the anchorage capacity of roof bolts determined by in-situ pull tests, will provide information for evaluating the installed load, the bolt spacing as well as the specifications for structural and anchorage characteristics of the bolt assemblies. This paper presents a case history of monitoring the complete load histories of roof bolts in an underground coal mine of Pittsburgh seam.

The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

Design models for belt conveyors used in mines predict both the belt power requirements and belt tensions. Conveyors with slightly downhill profiles are more complex to predict due to the way that models such as CEMA interpret friction. Performance of a particular conveyor in relation to other conveyors in the same system requires an analysis of natural stopping times, braked times and take-up location. A review of CEMA-based PC models is presented for design of underground multi-flight belt systems.

Simulation models have been widely used to analyze the operations and characteristics of a variety of systems. Such models mimmick a projected reality by analyzing the interaction of the events, transactions, and facilities which combine to make up the system. The models are structured as a computer representation of the system components and their logical, precedence and timing relationships. The operation of the system is then simulated over some finite time interval to gather analytical and staistical data. This paper presents a method whereby bulk handling systems, either actual or proposed, may be analyzed by means of simulation models to project the enconomic consequences which may be expected from the system over some future time interval. An example is given to illustrate the construction of bulk handling simulation models, the derivation of performance data, and the analysis of the information with an eye to effective decision making.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. INTRODUCTION The application of micro-computers to the evaluation of an advanced exploration project is illustrated by reference to a large project in the Sudbury Basin region of Canada. The deposit in question is polymetalic (Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag) with a strike length of 3048m (10000ft) and has been explored to a depth of 457m (1500ft) by approximately 1350 diamond drillhole of between 9 - 305m (30-1000ft) in length. The large amount of data involved and the ability to rapidly recalculate geological reserves in response to fluctuating metal prices were key factors in the application of a micro-computer based evaluation system. The evaluation software was implemented at two levels, with data capture implemented mainly on - an entry level workstation comprising an IBM-PC compatible (PC-XT) micro-computer equipped with a 20Mb hard disc, printer and RS-232 serial communication facilities. Data analysis, display, geo- logical modelling and processing was carried out on a high-level workstation based on a Hewlett-Packard 9000 super- micro computer and peripherals, including a 40Mb hard disc, tablet digitizer and plotter. Basic drillhole data was entered either directly at the super- micro or transferred from the PC via the RS-232 link. The evaluation process proceeds once the data is edited and in a "clean" format within a master project database. The software is comprised of a suite of modular, integrated programs based on ease of use, interactive graphics and optimized for the computer workstation. Drillhole data was displayed and plotted as hard copy plots on which geological interpretations were developed. The data was copied into small manageable projects consisting of 100 to 150 drillholes, within which a sectional model was created such that all the models are interconnected along the entire strike with no overlaps. Geological reserves were derived by developing a set of function variables, including Net Smelter Return, within the database. The values of these functions can be displayed on the model sections and "ore” zones defined in accordance with pre-determined cutoff values. Interpolation of the modelled data was then carried out and geological reserves calculated and reported. DATA CAPTURE Drillhole data for the project consisted mainly of existing drillhole logs, although the system allows for the entry of new information as it becomes available. The structure and format (i.e. number and length of variable fields) is user defined. The log for this project comprises an abbreviated section for name, competency, grain size, texture, colour and alteration. Fields are defined for structural information regarding bedding and fault angles and up to seven mineral identification columns and percentages are available. Assay information consisting of the sample number, width and six determinations (Cu%, Pb%, Zn%, Fe%, Au opt., Ag opt.) along with a comments section of 25 characters completes the log. One powerful feature of the data- base is the ability to set up function variables that are mathematical and/or logical combinations of the project variables, enabling the user to develop economic variables such as Net Smelter Return. These functions include current treatment costs, deductions and penalties and can be rapidly recalculated within the database to accommodate changes in metal prices, forecast recoveries and exchange rates (Table 1).

Discussion by J.L. Weeks Discussion I wish to comment on Kissell and Sacks's paper "Inaccuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines." It is well established in industrial hygiene that area sampling is not an accurate measure of personal exposure. To measure personal exposure, one must use a personal sampler. Kissell and Sacks, using data from coal mining, reached the same conclusion. This is the right answer but it is the wrong question. This issue arises because the machine-mounted respirable dust continuous monitor (MMRDCM) is being considered to monitor coal-miners' exposure to respirable dust. This device may be mounted on a continuous mining machine, and it would take a modified area sample. I refer to it as "modified" because a mining machine is not really a fixed location, as is the typical area sample. The concern with whether this machine would provide an accurate estimate of the machine-operator's exposure, however, overlooks important features of the MMRDCM. Specifically, it displays dust concentration as it occurs and at the place where it is needed, not 10 days later, as is the case with the current system. Used in this way, it allows for timely intervention to control exposure to dust and it leads to greater first-hand knowledge of specific conditions and mining practices that result in excess exposure. If one knows the dust level is excessive at the time the dust is being generated, it is possible to use known and effective methods of dust control to reduce exposure. By measuring again, one can determine whether control methods have worked. This is a generic procedure followed in any industrial process: measure, adjust and measure again. It leads to more effective and more efficient dust control and is preferred to taking a sample, waiting 10 days for the results and then trying to apply that information to a situation that no longer exists. The MMRDCM also records the dust level automatically, and it runs continuously, making it harder to tamper with. Dust monitoring in underground coal mines has been corrupted by some operators having submitted fraudulent samples (and being convicted on criminal charges because of it), weakening the credibility of the current system. The MMRDCM is, in part, a response to this corruption, and an effort to focus attention on dust levels and dust controls rather than on the perpetrators of fraud. Use of the MMRDCM is an evolutionary change from the current system. With the current system, one takes a personal sample of exposure of the "designated occupation" (DO, defined at 30 CFR 70.2 (f)), the occupation regularly exposed to the highest level of dust on a section. Typically, on sections using continuous mining machines, this is the mining-machine operator. The rationale behind DO sampling rests on some of the findings that Kissell and Sacks report. They reviewed several studies that showed that dust concentration varies with location on a mining section and that there is a concentration gradient with the highest concentration occurring closest to the face. The logic behind DO sampling strategy is that if the dust concentration at the place where it is highest is below the exposure limit, then concentration elsewhere on the section is also below the limit. In this way, one will have achieved the objective or keeping dust concentration below the exposure limit for all miners on the section by measuring the exposure of only one miner. The

[Introduction] Section 122 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, Public Law 9595, directed the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, to review all relevant information and determine whether emissions of radioactive pollutants into ambient air will cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health. In August 1979, EPA published a preliminary report on assessments of public health impact resulting from emissions of radionuclides into air from a broad spectrum of major source categories (1). A section of this document presented a theoretical analysis of the radioactive airborne emissions from several non-uranium mines including iron, copper, zinc, clay, limestone, fluorspar, and phosphate. Since 1978 EPA's Las Vegas Laboratory has been gathering field data on actual radionuclide emissions from these mines to support the earlier theoretical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of those field measurements in comparison with the assumed values for the theoretical analysis. Data were presented in EPA's preliminary report on both gaseous radon-222 and particulate uranium-238 emissions from non-uranium mines. Most of the emissions data were rough estimates based upon the uranium content of the ore. Preliminary data from a few field studies were also used. Although both the theoretical and field studies by EPA were concerned with radon-222 and radioactive particulate emissions, this paper will concentrate only on the radon effluents. Radon from mines seems to have the greatest potential for possible health effects due to radiation. Data on particulate emissions are presented in other technical reports (2-5). [Theoretical Study] The theoretical emission data are presented in Table I. The estimates for the iron, zinc, and clay mines are based upon preliminary measurements taken by the Las Vegas laboratory. The estimates for the other mines were made assuming that 20% of the total radon-222 in the ore was released during the mining process and the radon release rate from the exposed ore surface was a factor of two greater than that resulting from mining. [ ] Dose assessments for radon from these mines were carried out using model facilities located on generic sites (1). The AIRDOS-II computer code (for estimating dispersion of airborne pollutants) with some minor modifications was used to determine working level exposures to a maximally exposed individual and a regional population. A conversion factor for risk/WL-year(O.021 fatal cancers/person-WL-y) was developed primarily from information on uranium miner exposures (6). This computer code and conversion factor were then applied to the assumed emission rate of radon-222 from each type of mine to develop estimates of working levels, lifetime risks and number of fatal cancers. A summary of this data is presented in table II. [ ] The highest estimated number of cancer deaths per year of operation is 0.05 cancer deaths or 1.0 death due to radon during the 24 year life of a phosphorous mine. For comparison, EPA estimates that underground uranium mines would cause .03 cancer deaths per year of operation in a regional population(1). [Field Study] As a followup to the theoretical study, EPA's Las Vegas laboratory began making measurements in 1978 of actual emissions of radon-222 and radioactive particulates from mine vents at several facilities for each of the industries listed in Table I and II. They were intended to verify general information and radon emissions from EPA's theoretical estimates.

For large mining sites in the west, the traditional method for performing an ecological risk assessment (ERA) provides little useful information for risk managers faced with selecting and designing sound remedial options. Current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk assessment guidance largely supports quantitative risk characterization of individual species as surrogates for population and ecosystem-level effects. Developing a work plan for investigating and remediating ecosystem-level changes potentially caused by large-scale historic mining/smelting contaminant release requires a decision process that incorporates a more holistic ecosystem management approach. Some of the most wasteful efforts associated with mine site ecological risk assessments arise when the risk analysis and data collection programs are not specifically linked up-front to the risk manager's decision needs. The following paper discusses the importance of employing a decision-based, ecosystem management framework when conducting ecological risk assessments at large mining sites. A case study of an ecological risk assessment currently being performed at a large New Mexico copper mine site is presented.

"Controlled recirculation may be considered as a beneficial means in mines of cold climate, where heating of air is required, and in deep or extensive mines, where cooling of air is required. Controlled recirculation can be designed by proper sizing of the booster fans with respect to main fan. Intuitively, it seems that the buildup of methane at the face will cease when a steady state condition is attained, and also that, at that same time, the maximum concentration at the face will remain same as in the return air. This supposition is proved by mathematical analysis that considers uniform mixing of methane in air in successive cycles of recirculation. This study includes two scenarios to show the effect of controlled recirculation on methane concentration in a sample network. Firstly, when recirculation crosscut exists near the working face; secondly, when recirculation crosscut exists away from the working face. The later scenario shows lesser buildup of methane concentration than the former one. INTRODUCTION The controlled recirculation is designed purposefully to allow a partial fraction of used air that increases the air velocity due to increased quantity of air and consequently allows effective dilution of contaminants to improve local ventilation condition at the working face. It can be designed by proper sizing of booster fan with respect to main fan in a ventilation network. Controlled recirculation may be categorized as crosscut, in-line or combined system based upon the configuration of the booster fan locations in a district ventilation network. Research on controlled recirculation has shown numerous benefits of controlled recirculation especially in deep or extensive underground mines, where further heating or cooling is required (Calizaya 1990; McPherson 1993 and Jones, 1987). However, fear of buildup of concentration has misled the mining communities to view the controlled recirculation as a hazard and deprived the mining industry to derive benefits from recirculation. The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed.

A major design problem for upper seam longwall gate roads that are to be constructed in a multi-seam environment is to predict the effects of stress field changes created by interaction. To quantify these effects, case study data were analyzed to develop empirical stress transfer relationships between seams for both longwall and room and pillar mining. Data analysis showed vertical movement and roof characterization in the upper seam to be controlling factors in damage prediction and, therefore, gate road planning and design. CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating) was correlated with the multi-seam roof characterization systems previously used. A WINDOWS-based software package named UGLY (Upperseam Gateroad Longwall Stability) was developed. Results from selected case studies were correlated with upper seam stress predictions.

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy's law. Knowledge of the cake pore microstructure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 µm, length of 500 µm and height of 4000 µm. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: I) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method, 2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4) some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.

It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of collectors on mineral surfaces in a copper/molybdenum flotation system. AFM images show that collectors absorb on chalcopyrite surface in patches at pH 11. A study of temperature effect on surface morphology excludes the possibility that these patches are nanobubbles forming on hydrophobized mineral surface. Hydrocarbon oil absorbs on molybdenite quickly, while KEX (potassium ethyl xanthate) has little affinity for molybdenite. Pyrite is much more reactive in water and its surface is easily coated in Ca(OH)2 solutions at pH 11. Based on the obtained AFM images, the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface and its impact on copper/molybdenum flotation were discussed.

Introduction Fire assaying is an ancient method of determining the amount of gold and silver in geological materials. Today's commercial, mining, school, and private fire assaying laboratories still use this basic assaying method. One of the primary reagents used to collect gold and silver from the ore is litharge (PbO), or lead oxide. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) and the Nevada Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSH) have a lead standard. It states that a person exposed to airborne lead at concentrations greater than 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) of air over an eight-hour period has gone beyond the permissible limit for health safety. It is not uncommon to get airborne lead concentrations of 1400 µg/m3 (40 µg per cu ft) in the flux/sampling area or 900 µg/m3 (25 µg per cu ft) around the gas/ electric furnaces during the fusion and cupelling phases. Therefore, any individual working in these areas for more than 30 days per year without proper protection is a likely candidate for lead poisoning. Lead In A Human Lead enters the body as a toxic substance by breathing it into the lungs and upper respiratory tract and by getting lead particles into the digestive system through ingestion. Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing tobacco and gum, or wiping a lead-contaminated hand across the mouth are all potential ways forgetting lead into the body. Lead taken in large quantities can actually kill a person in a matter of days. This is rare, however. The real hazard of lead overexposure is for the unsuspecting person who works in an unsafe lead environment for months or years. This individual can slowly receive damage, sometimes permanent, to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, blood, gums, and reproductive system. Safe Blood-Lead Level The Lead Standard states that the maximum safe blood-lead level is 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) of whole blood. It recommends 30 µg/100 g (30 µg per 3.5 oz) if a person is of child-bearing age. People not working around lead products normally have a blood level of less than 10 µg/100 g (10 µg per 3.5 oz). A person not adequately protected can exceed 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) in a few weeks by fire assaying only 100 samples per day per week. Studies show that some individuals have developed lead-related diseases with blood-lead levels less than 80 µg/m3 (2.3 µg per cu ft). Lead Poisoning Symptoms There is a long list of symptoms associated with lead poisoning. The most common are: a prolonged, sweet, metallic taste in the mouth; loss of appetite; anxiety and irritability; weakness and dizziness; nausea and tremors; and insomnia. Preventive Measures Based on the lead standard, a number of preventive measures can be taken to ensure that fire assay laboratory personnel frequently exposed to lead are protected against overexposure. First, the actual lead concentration within the assaying area should be determined. In Nevada, one can contact the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health for assistance in monitoring any laboratory. The agency will also recommend ways to protect against lead. This agency does the monitoring and provides an educational class on lead safety. This type of agency can be found in other states. Commercial consulting firms are also available, but they are expensive. Regardless of the technique used to determine lead concentrations, it is most likely that the average fire assay area exceeds the 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) lead concentration limit. This is considered unsafe.

Introduction Trends of successful discovery technology and psychology emerge from a thoughtful study of various companies' exploration programs. These subjective patterns can be generalized into groups of factors for discussion. Here, for convenience, factors that influence exploration success are separated into management and geologic concerns. Most successful discoveries have a demonstrably favorable management combined with a technically competent geologic input. Both are required. But the management input is decisive. Management factors include the correct definition of management's role; cost of exploration; time needed for exploration; commodity selection; and the fostering of autonomy, creativity, and confidence in the geology department. Geologic factors include imaginative technical competence (field as well as academic), correct development and use of empirical exploration or prospecting models, and dedication. Success comes to those entities that are properly managed and have technological competence. A management team that directs a company's business has been compared to a dynasty. The dynasty lays out policy and follows up with appropriate action. In that management's power is pervasive, the term is appropriate. Management's role is, however, more important. Many examples can be cited where the geologic input was impeccable. But management somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and the exploration success was turned to a third party's profit. Management Factors Management's role can be broadly generalized to four parts. These are to identify the commodities it seeks, define its part in the exploration process, develop a functioning exploration department, and have the desire to succeed. It must have confidence in its geologists and delegate to them the authority and responsibility they need to operate successfully. Head office management cannot do the thinking for a field staff thousands of kilometers away. There is no substitute for confidence and delegation of authority. Successes came to those who had the freedom to act. Motivation is a management requisite. Management's role is to prevent destructive, internecine political battles within the corporate structure. Most large US mining corporations have well known histories of political strife that have damaged their exploration efforts. Management's role must, above all, include the desire to succeed. There are cases where management has been confronted with a commercial exploration success, but their reaction is to request additional study or exploration. Perhaps the problem of bringing a commercial find into production is beyond their capabilities. But a bona fide discovery sent back for additional work commonly is lost due to that management. The cost of exploration is a factor that management must accept. A variety of studies made during the past 40 years shows the cost per discovery to be $25 million, $38 million, $200 million, or even $290 million. These figures are derived by dividing the total exploration expenditure by the number of discoveries. However, successful management dynasties have a much lower cost per discovery during their management regime. Asarco, from 1948 through 1963, had one of the lowest cost discovery rates in the world. Duval Corp., from 1948 through 1968, had comparably low discovery costs. Placer Development, from 1955, was equally successful. Western Mining in Australia has had one of the longest lived dynasties associated with exploration success. Time is vital in exploration success. Most successful exploration case histories stress sufficient time in project exploration so that the target is well tested. A large target cannot always be adequately evaluated by a few holes (strat or concept testing). Serendipity helps in exploring large targets, but it best operates in a lengthy program. Numerous case histories include pleasant surprises. But these came mostly after the 10th hole. Commodity markets are important factors governing exploration success. Management's decision to explore for a specific commodity can doom its effort if that product suffers from severe oversupply. Unquestionably, progressive copper price increases from 1948 through 1968 helped convert marginal porphyry copper discoveries

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water, and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator.
